New Hope's Mission To Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist, and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist.

"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." - Romans 13:1 "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." - 1 Timothy 2:1-4 I lear ned a new ter m today. In an online post, I r ead that in July of this year Pew Resear ch r epor ted that 60% of the Am er ican public w er e suffer ing fr om "election fatigue." It's not that people ar e uninter ested. It's sim ply that they ar e w or n out fr om all the political r ancor and accom panying vitr iol. Had som eone told m e w hen I cast my fir st pr esidential election ballot in 1972 that pr esidential politics w ould degener ate to the state in w hich w e find our selves today, I w ould not have believed them . Yet, her e w e ar e.

The tem ptation for m any Chr istians, I believe, is to divide life betw een the secular and the spir itual. Ther e is the "faith" par t of life and then ther e is "ever ything else." How ever , this per spective is entir ely unbiblical. The Hebr ew faith know s no cleavage betw een the secular and spir itual. The Apostle Paul m akes it quite clear that those w ho ar e in author ity over us ar e established by God and w e ar e enjoined to pr ay for them . The concept of separ ation betw een Chur ch and State is a r elatively new phenom enon in w or ld histor y, intr oduced

by Thom as Jeffer son in his letter to the Danbur y Baptists of Connecticut in 1802. I am one w ho believes that this concept is m isunder stood by the vast m ajor ity of Am er icans. As I r ead Thom as Jeffer son's inter pr etation of the Fir st Am endm ent, it seem s to m e that he is not suggesting that ther e should be no inter action betw een the Chur ch and State but that ther e should be no "state chur ch" as w as the com m on pr actice in Eur ope at that tim e. Neither should the State give pr efer ential tr eatm ent to any single Chur ch. (continued on next page)

It is inappr opr iate for m e to tell anyone how to vote and it w ould put my and New Hope's m inistr y in ser ious jeopar dy if I w er e to do so. Still, I u r ge you t o vot e. Ther e is nothing Chr istian or spir itual about staying hom e and not exer cising your r ight to vote. As you pr epar e to vote, I encour age you to pr ay that God's Spir it w ill guide you and illum ine you. And, above all I w ould encour age you to pr ay the w or ds of our Com m union litur gy: O Lord of Providence, who holds the destiny of the nations in your hand, we pray for our country. Inspire the hearts and minds of our leaders that they, together with all our nation, may first seek your kingdom and righteousness so that order, liberty, and peace may dwell with your people.

I have now been the chur ch adm inistr ator for five m onths. Dur ing that tim e I have seen a lot of change. We have changed how w e m onitor spending. We ar e changing how w e contr act vendor s and utility ser vices. We have changed our pr ocess for building our annual budget. We have m ade HUGE changes in our Childr en's M inistr y.

Ther e ar e m any clichés r elated to change. Hum or ous clichés, like my favor ite, "The only thing that likes change is a w et baby." And then ther e ar e m or e thoughtful clichés, w ith deep m eaning. New Hope's m ost r ecent change is one that I pr efer to descr ibe w ith a m or e thoughtful quote by Anatole Fr ance: "All changes, even the m ost longed for , have their m elancholy; for w hat w e leave behind us is a par t of our selves; w e m ust die to one life befor e w e can enter another."

Bob Cline, New Hope's Youth Dir ector for the past 19 year s, has elected to m ake changes in his pr ofessional life in or der to m ake changes in his per sonal life. He w ants to have better contr ol over his tim e so he can devote m or e to his fam ily. W hom of us can't r elate to that?

M y w ife Kar en and I have been m em ber s of New Hope Chur ch since 2008. Our childr en w er e gr ow n and gone by then so w e w er e not blessed to have per sonally exper ienced Bob Cline w or king w ith our childr en. Those w ho have had that exper ience under stand exactly w hat I m ean w hen I say, w e w er e not blessed. Bob Cline has been a tr ue blessing to countless youth, m any of w hom ar e adults today.

Bob's job descr iption asks that he encour age and assist m iddle and high school youth in developing and m aintaining a per sonal faith and com m itm ent to Jesus Chr ist. His duties include dir ecting and im plem enting the youth m inistr ies pr ogr am s, r ecr uiting and r etaining par ticipants, planning and coor dinating Sunday School and Chr istian Education for youth, coor dinating and leading high school m ission tr ips, and offer ing oppor tunities for m iddle school youth to attend RCA sum m er cam ps. This is only a sm all sam ple of the specific duties listed on a ver y extensive job descr iption. (continued on next page)

Bob Cline has gone w ay above and beyond checking off a list of duties on a job descr iption. He becam e per sonally involved in m olding young Chr istians, instilling a bur ning desir e to follow Jesus and be His light in their daily lives. The young people Bob w or ked w ith ever y day becam e beacons of light in the dar kness for so m any of their peer s. They w er e pr ovided the str ength to stand stout in their beliefs and tr ust that God had a plan for them , no m atter w hat. Bob lit a fir e in these young people that tur ned into a total com m itm ent to a loving r elationship w ith Jesus Chr ist.

As an Elder , I had the honor of teaching a confir m ation class and per for m ing an or al evaluation of the confir m ants. The level of their know ledge of the Bible and the life and m ission of Jesus Chr ist took my br eath aw ay. The questions that they w ould gener ate in a discussion w er e questions that m ost adults w ouldn't be able to com e up w ith.

Sim ply put, Bob Cline IS the Youth M inistr y of New Hope Chur ch. We w ill go thr ough a pr ocess to fill the position of Dir ector of Youth M inistr y, and God w ill place som eone ver y qualified in this position to continue this m inistr y for His childr en. But I dar e not use the w or d "r eplace." You can't r eplace a Bob Cline.

Her e's som e backgr ound infor m ation and som e questions for discussion. We have gr eat discussion in both Sunday School and youth gr oups - w hy not continue those at hom e?

Youth Sunday School classes ar e continuing our study of the Book of Rom ans. We ar e using "Studies on the Go: Rom ans" by Laur ie Polich. Cur r ently, w e have discussed judging other s and God's judgm ent. W hat's the differ ence? W hy should w e not be judgm ental of other s? W hat does the book of Rom ans say about judgm ent? We have also discussed the law and the pur pose of the law. W hat is "the law "? W hy did God give us the law ? Can w e follow the law ? Does the law save us? W hat is faith? W hy did Chr ist have to die? Hopefully, these conver sations w ill lead to m any m or e discussions and even better questions.

In evening youth gr oups, w e have been using "Can I Ask That 2?" by Jim Candy, Kar a Pow ell, and Br ad Gr iffin. Ther e is even a student guide if you w ant to follow along at hom e. We have alr eady discussed doubt, hell, and sin. Is it okay to doubt? Does doubt show w eakness in our faith? How should w e handle doubts? Is Hell r eal? W hy w ould God send som eone to Hell? W hat does the Bible tell us about Hell? Can I do anything so bad that God w on't for give m e? W hat do I have to do to be for given? If God for gives my sins, w hy shouldn't I continue living in sin?

Don't have all the answ er s to the questions? Neither do I! Look them up together and pr ay for w isdom and answ er s. Oftentim es our questions ar e answ er ed w ith m or e, better defined questions. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. - James 1:5

October w as a busy m onth at New Hope Pr esch ool . We began our m onth w ith pictur e day, and the kids w er e all sm iles and looked ador able. M id-m onth, w e had our fir st field tr ip to Lehner 's Far m w her e the kids got to pick that per fect pum pkin, and enjoyed m any other fun activities on the far m . We had ideal w eather , and the childr en had a w onder ful tim e w ith their fr iends. Finally, w e finished off our m onth w ith Hallow een. The kids had a gr eat tim e par ading and tr ick-or -tr eating ar ound school in their costum es, follow ed by a fun par ty in their classr oom . Thanks to the Chur ch staff and fr iends for passing out candy, and helping to m ake this a fun day for the kids.

It's har d to believe Novem ber is her e, and fall is in full sw ing. We w ill soon be pr epar ing for the holidays, and our annual tur key tr ot fundr aiser. This is alw ays a fun day for the kids, as they str ut like tur keys ar ound school com pleting an obstacle cour se. We w ill finish our m onth w ith our fir st par ent teacher confer ences, and then off for Thanksgiving br eak!

Dur ing this season of giving thanks, w e ar e thankful and feel ver y blessed to have such w onder ful childr en and fam ilies. We w ish you all a blessed holiday season!

We w ill lear n and gr ow together as a gr oup, and as individual fam ilies thr ough w eekly Bible teaching, fam ily tim e, and application activities designed to illustr ate the point at a level each of us can apply to our ow n lives - kids included!

In this study w e w ill focus on Paul's w or ds in Galatians as they encour age us to pur sue a life of holiness and liber ty in Chr ist.

This life is gained not by our ow n str ength but in the know ledge of God's em pow er ing gr ace in our lives.
