One of M ax?s m or e notable quotes is this: The fir st r esponsibility of a leader is to define r eality. The last is to say ?thank you.? In betw een the leader is a ser vant. One of the leader s on our staff, Chur ch Adm inistr ator Gr eg Cham ber s, has done a ver y helpful job in defining our cur r ent financial r eality at New Hope. Jim Collins, in his book Good to Gr eat, speaks of the necessity of facing the ?br utal facts.? At the Apr il Tow n M eeting, Deacon Ben War r en gave a ver y encour aging financial update. Our financial gener osity has changed substantially over the past w eeks to the extent that w e ar e now appr oxim ately $50,000 beh i n d budgeted r evenue. As your Senior Pastor , I do w ant to say ?thank you.? Your gener osity exhibited in the gift of your tim e, your talent and your financial
r esour ces has enabled us to change lives in som e r em ar kably significant w ays thr ough the m inistr y of New Hope Chur ch. Quite sim ply, w e ar e not able to do w hat w e do w ithout your gener osity. I also w ant to thank God. Tr uly God has been faithful in blessing the w or k w e do. One of our under gir ding convictions at New Hope is that ever ything w e ar e and ever ything w e have is God?s gift to us. As of last Sunday?s giving, Apr il 28th, our chur ch?s budgeted giving has a balance of -$50,605.54. This is the differ ence betw een actual giving and budgeted giving. Apr il has been the biggest pr oblem , although giving for the m onth?s of Januar y and Febr uar y w er e below budget as w ell. For the m onth of Apr il, our aver age w eekly giving w as $20,052.50, com par ed w ith an aver age w eekly budgeted giving of $34,646.94, giving us a shor tfall of $58,377.76 for this past m onth. Now let?s look at the giving by w eek, year to date. How do these num ber s look if w e com bine the fir st 17 w eeks of 2019? The aver age adjusted w eekly budgeted giving is $22,589/w eek ver sus an aver age of
$19,613/w eek actual giving. This r esults in our aver age w eekly giving being dow n $2,976 for a YTD total deficit of $50,592 (w ith r ounding of the above num ber s.). The actual deficit is $50,605.54 as r epor ted below. This begs the question, ?W hat has happened to our giving?? Keep in m ind w hen r eview ing these num ber s, t h at t h e bu dget f or 2019 i s equ al t o t h e gi v i n g f or 2018. Below you will find a n update fr om the TenClay fa mily who r ecently r elocated fr om Pa ler mo, I ta ly to Long I sla nd, NY. Dear Fr iends, I w ant to star t by w ishing each and ever y one of you a blessed Easter. Our Lor d and Savior , Jesus, exper ienced so m uch pain dur ing his shor t tim e her e on ear th. Bor n into an unconventional fam ily (for being bor n to a vir gin m other is, indeed, r ar e!), fleeing to Egypt as a political and r eligious r efugee, m ocked and scor ned by so m any he encounter ed? all of this befor e being falsely im pr isoned, publicly beaten and hung on the cr oss to die a painful death. Our w or ld w as, indeed, ver y dar k for thr ee days as w e aw aited his r esur r ection and ascension. But the light? the joy? the hope that Easter br ings casts aw ay not only the dar kness of those thr ee days, but the linger ing dar kness in our w or ld today. Alleluia!
M y fam ily and I ar e slow ly adjusting to life back in the United States. The RCA chur ch Tim is pastor ing in Long Island, New Yor k has been gr acious and w elcom ing, and the schools that our daughter s attend ar e ver y good. We lived in tem por ar y housing w hen w e landed in the United States and ar e in the pr ocess of finishing our m ove to the m anse ow ned by the chur ch this m onth.
I have been blessed to accept invitations to fur ther the conver sation and discer nm ent pr ocess w ithin the RCA r egar ding how w e, as Chr istians, ar e called to car e for r efugees and displaced people ar ound the w or ld. Chur ches, com m unity gr oups, pastor ?s r etr eats, w om en?s com m union br eakfasts, m issionar ies, college and sem inar y classes, Sunday School classes and youth gr oups? these ar e a few of the am azing oppor tunities I have had to connect w ith people to answ er questions about the global cr isis of displaced people and m igr ation, to study w hat scr iptur e says about the issue, and to spend tim e in pr ayer and im plor ing the Holy Spir it to guide individuals and institutions tow ar ds a faithful and active r esponse to car ing for those seeking r efuge. If you w ould like to talk w ith m e about the car e of r efugees and displaced people, or w ould like to invite m e to join your congr egation, classis, r egional synod, com m ission, council, educational institution, please contact m e at: jjtenclay@r ca.or g. I w ant to end this letter w ith one final pr oject I have been w or king on. Par t of my r ole as the new ly appointed Refugees M inistr ies Coor dinator for RCA Global M ission is to help identify ecum enical par tner s that ar e pr oviding excellent car e for r efugees and displaced people. The fir st par tner ship I w ould like to
highlight is w ith Par tner s Relief and Developm ent. Their w or k w ith vulner able and displaced populations is w onder ful and Tanner Sm ith, an RCA pastor , w or ks w ith them thr ough their West M ichigan office. We have identified tw o pr ojects for a par tner ship betw een RCA Global M ission and Par tner s Relief and Developm ent: to r ebuild a school in Ir aq and to pr ovide tr aum a car e to Yazidi childr en. I w ould especially like to see these pr ojects pr om oted for M other ?s Day, as I can think of no better w ay to honor the m other s in our lives than by r ebuilding hope and a futur e for childr en w ho have been deeply tr aum atized by the r avages of w ar and displacem ent.
