I find them challenging, not because they'r e difficult to under stand, but because they ar e so difficult to follow. For the m om ent, let's focus on the second to the last par able in this chapter.

M ost of us m ay know this par able as the "Par able of the Talents." A talent, in this par able, is a unit of cur r ency. Thr ee ser vants ar e called by their m aster and given var ying talents. To one is given ten, to another five and to the thir d one. The fir st tw o, thr ough ingenuity and industr iousness, double their talents.

The thir d plays it safe, bur ying the talent in the gr ound so as to not lose it or have it stolen. W hen the m aster r etur ns and calls each ser vant to give an account, the tw o w ho have doubled their talents ar e gr eatly r ew ar ded w hile the thir d is chastised and condem ned for doing nothing.

New Hope's Mission To Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist, and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist.

I w ant to be ver y clear that Jesus w as not quick to chastise and condem n.

Thr oughout the gospels, w e find abundant evidence of Jesus' m er cy and gr ace.

And yet w e cannot escape or evade the point of this par able.

W hat's the point? It's not about w hat w e have been given but w hat w e do w ith w hat w e have been given, par ticular ly w hat w e do in the cause of Chr ist. How easy it w ould be to fall pr ey to "talent envy" and to desir e w hat som eone else has or think that w e ar e "less than" because w e do not have w hat other s have.

Again, this m isses the point.

Because a talent w as a unit of cur r ency in Jesus' day, this par able does speak to the stew ar dship of our financial r esour ces. How ever , I w ant to encour age us to consider the stew ar dship of our tim e. Tim e has been distr ibuted to us univer sally and equally. No one has m or e or less tim e than another. How w e use our tim e is w hat differ entiates us. I w ould also ar gue that tim e is equally valuable as cur r ency. In other w or ds, how w e invest our tim e in the cause of Chr ist is as significant as how w e invest our finances. (continued on next page)

Over a decade ago, I hear d Bill Hybels, pastor of W illow Cr eek Chur ch in Bar r ington, IL, speak at a pastor s' confer ence. He w as speaking about how the Chur ch w ould be invested in the cause of Chr ist as it w as enter ing the 21st centur y. In the m id to latter par t of the 20th centur y, m any chur ches invested in hum an r esour ces in or der to incr ease their im pact in God's w or k . That r equir ed a concur r ent incr ease in the am ount of financial r esour ces. Hybels told us that the handw r iting w as alr eady on the w all. Financial stew ar dship in m ost chur ches w as not keeping pace w ith m em ber s' expectations of pr ogr am s and m inistr ies. He dr ew a gr aph w ith the x axis r epr esenting expectations and the y axis r epr esenting finances. Ther e w as a gr ow ing gap betw een the tw o. W hat w ould br idge the gap? In Hybels' opinion, it w ould be volunteer s (w hat w e at New Hope call "unpaid staff ").

We'r e about to enter the sum m er m onths at New Hope, m onths w hen our Childr en's M inistr y offer s tw o of its "gr eat im pact" pr ogr am s. In June w e w ill offer Spor ts Cam p and in July VBS. Each of these has the potential to m ake a ver y significant im pact on the childr en attending, par ticular ly as they hear and ar e invited to consider w ho Jesus Chr ist is for them . Each of these also r equir e a gr eat num ber of unpaid staff/volunteer s.

As you hear Jesus' w or ds "for to all those w ho have, m or e w ill be given, and they w ill have an abundance; but fr om those w ho have nothing, even w hat they have w ill be taken aw ay," I ur ge you to invest your tim e by ser ving as a Childr en's M inistr y unpaid staff m em ber. And, if childr en ar e not "your thing," ther e ar e plenty of other oppor tunities w her e you ar e able to ser ve at New Hope. Rem em ber , it's not w hat you have but w hat you do w ith w hat you have. You m ay be m aking an investm ent that r eaps dividends for eter nity.

As I do ever y m or ning, r ecently I r ead a devotional (God helping m e w r ite my new sletter ar ticle) that touched my hear t. The devotional w as about "Unconditional Love." It caused m e to look deep w ithin myself and ask the har d question; is this YOU? Sadly, in r eality, I fail at this m or e than I am successful. Below ar e excer pts fr om that devotion.

"If you want to love the way Jesus loved, if you want your life to be characterized by love in a way that reflects the heart of God to everyone you meet, then pay attention to how you respond to people who make you uncomfortable.

You know? the ones who are different from you in significant ways, the ones you don?t like, don?t understand, and don?t enjoy. The people who hold different beliefs, practice different lifestyles and hold distinctly different priorities from your own.

As painful as relationships can sometimes be, we are relational beings, created in God?s image to belong, to serve, to worship and to live in community. We?re called to be his hands and feet and God often touches our life through those around us; relationships are the lifeblood of the Church." (continued on next page)

"Because of his unconditional love for all people, we often find God in the midst of places and situations where we least expect him - on the street corners and in alleyways, in hospitals and prisons, orphanages and courtrooms.

W hat frames the tone of your life? How often do you stretch beyond your comfort zone to reach out to people? The ability to enjoy a big, spacious, open-hearted life is directly proportional to your ability to love everyone, especially those who are different from you. Remember - everywhere you find people, you will also find God." The last par t of the devotion said, "Be challenged today to live outside of yourself. Stop and give time to people you may not normally associate with, be aware of your surroundings and of people who may need the love of Christ lavished on them today ? through you. Be willing to be a vessel used by God, not just toward people whom you love and agree with, but to people whom you may find difficult or disagree with. Ask God to give you wisdom and strength to be Christ-like to each and every person you encounter."

This devotion br ought to light how often I pass up oppor tunities to ser ve other s, to lear n som ething about people I don't know , or to see people I m ay shy aw ay fr om in a differ ent light. Both tim es I ser ved at the Safe House in Delaw ar e w ith New Hope's M issional Engagem ent Team , I got to KNOW people that I had only SEEN in chur ch.

We w or ked side by side, labor ed for a cause, and built r elationships. At our latest All Chur ch Outr each on Apr il 29, w e had SEVERAL oppor tunities to BUILD RELATIONSHIPS in and ar ound our com m unity and w ithin the chur ch. Oppor tunities to dem onstr ate Jesus' love by giving our tim e and talents. We can touch the lives of other s, sim ply by pr oviding a m uch needed ser vice for God's Glor y. Wor king alongside other s in a com m on cause builds solid r elationships, and satisfies our goal to have m issional engagem ent as par t of New Hope's DNA. As I r eflect back to a Satur day last fall, w hen I w as attending my gr andson's soccer gam e behind Gr ace Br ethr en Chur ch on Liber ty Rd., I r em em ber pulling into the par king lot, noticing 40-50 people of all ages in jeans and sw eatshir ts. They w er e pr uning tr ees, tr im m ing shr ubs, picking up sticks and debr is, and m oving w heelbar r ow s full of m ulch to be spr ead in m ulch beds and ar ound tr ees. I asked a gentlem an sitting inside the chur ch w ho those people w er e. He said, "They ar e m em ber s of the chur ch, w or king on our fall beautification pr oject. We do this in the fall and spr ing ever y year. We have a gr eat deal of pr ide in our chur ch and this gives us a chance to w or k side by side, lear ning about each other and per for m ing a ser vice that saves us m oney."

Have you thought that m aybe w e at New Hope Chur ch could do the sam e thing? Ther e is not a chur ch in Centr al Ohio w ith the exposur e and r ecognition that "The Big Chur ch by the Zoo" has. We ar e boldly per ched for ever yone w ho tr avels dow n Pow ell Road to see. We have a beautiful chur ch, w ith beautiful landscaping, that w e pay $10,640 a year to m aintain. Could that $10,640 be better used to ser ve our com m unity, His Place, the Dublin Food Pantr y, Young Life, and other ar ea entities?

Just m aybe, this is the star t of som ething BIG!! To the Glor y of God!!

The Bible tells us in Pr over bs 22:6 (NI V) to "star t childr en off on the w ay they should go, and even w hen they ar e old they w ill not tur n fr om it." The Childr en?s M inistr y Team is instituting "God?s House Rules." The childr en of New Hope w ill be lear ning how to love God's House, r espect God's House, and ser ve God's House, and their siblings in Chr ist. It is our hope that our young Disciples w ill gar ner m or e know ledge in honor ing the gifts God has blessed New Hope Chur ch w ith. In tur n, w e pr ay that their faith jour ney, thr ough all of the pr ogr am s her e at New Hope, w ill continue to flour ish.

As our school year com es to an end w e ar e enjoying all of our end of the year activities. The pr eschooler s w ent to the Zoo in Apr il and the Kinder gar ten class w ill go Str atfor d Ecological Far m in ear ly M ay.

The m onth of M ay is full of em otion for all of the staff as w e r eflect on all that w e have accom plished this year.

We have had so m uch fun w atching the childr en gr ow and lear n all year , they ar e a par t of our fam ily. We w ill celebr ate all their accom plishm ents on their last day of school w ith a shor t slide show , and w ill hand out cer tificates to all. We have planned a special gr aduation for our fir st Kinder gar ten class w ith caps and gow ns and cake, of cour se.

Each school year is special to us. This year w e celebr ated a child w ho w as able to attend our kinder gar ten w hile going thr ough tr eatm ent at Nationw ide Childr en's Hospital, and pr ayed for a child that had to leave us for tr eatm ent. We w atched br oken ar m s heal, teeth fall out, and childr en lear n to r ead and w r ite. We ar e blessed!

An investm ent fund (separ ate fr om the Gener al chur ch fund) w her e pr incipal is invested for total r etur n thr ough the Colum bus Foundation. A por tion of the inter est on the fund is given annually in the for m of gr ants to suppor t the m ission.

W h at i sn 't t h e NHEF? It is NOT par t of the Gener al Fund that pays ongoing staff, pr ogr am and facility expenses. NO m oney given to the Gener al Fund is used for Endow m ent Fund pr ojects.

An independent gr ant com m ittee, com pr ised of New Hope m em ber s, r eview s the gr ant applications and decides how the funds ar e disbur sed, based upon pr edeter m ined NHEF guidelines.
