One of the occasional ?Gr oundhog Day? conver sations that w e have am ong staff is about how w e can effectively com m unicate w ith the constituency of New Hope Chur ch? m em ber s and attendees. It?s a conver sation w e have over and over because, quite candidly, it?s fr ustr ating to r ealize that our attem pts ar e m oder ately successful. W hile w e do not know how m any people r ead the w eekly Infor m er that is inser ted in the w or ship bulletin, w e can tr ack how m any people r ead ?This Week at New Hope? that ar r ives via em ail ever y Fr iday after noon. By the sam e token, w hile w e do not know how m any people r ead their har d copy edition of our m onthly new sletter , w e ar e able to tr ack how m any people r ead it online. As I?ve said, our attem pts at com m unicating ar e m oder ately successful. Som ew her e betw een 30% and 35% of intended em ail r ecipients actually open ?This Week at New Hope? and our m onthly new sletter. The num ber w ho r ead an announcem ent or an ar ticle is appr oxim ately 12%. If w e com par e our selves to the industr y standar d, I suppose w e should be ecstatic w ith this r ate of r esponse. How ever , w e?r e m issing the gr eater per centage of our congr egation w ith these com m unication m edia.
I?m ver y m uch aw ar e that the pr evailing opinion is that the best w ay to com m unicate im por tant infor m ation is via an announcem ent in w or ship on Sunday m or ning. It?s only w hen one r ealizes that, on any given Sunday, w e have appr oxim ately 30% of our potential congr egation in w or ship that the star k r eality becom es clear : 70% of our congr egation is not in w or ship on any given Sunday and ther efor e m iss hear ing w hat w e w ant to com m unicate. We do r ealize that m ost of us ar e inundated w ith com m unication that is super fluous and ir r elevant. Our em ail inboxes ar e clutter ed and the am ount of junk m ail that w e r eceive thr ough the USPS is distr essing. W ith all the afor em entioned in m ind, w e?r e going to take a differ ent appr oach at New Hope. Beginning this sum m er , w e w ill offer a quar ter ly new sletter. W ith the r eduction in fr equency, w e ar e hoping for an incr ease in r eader ship. W hat w e w ant to com m unicate to you, our m em ber s, attendees and fr iends tr uly is not fake new s. We believe that it is im por tant to our life together and w e w ant you to be infor m ed of all that happens her e at New Hope. Now , I?ll be cur ious to lear n if anyone has r ead this.
