In a few shor t w eeks w e?ll be into that m uch anticipated season of the year w e call M ar ch M adness. I don?t w atch near ly as m uch NCAA basketball as I used to. But, I do enjoy w atching the NCAA tour nam ent and am alw ays am azed at the unexpected that tr anspir es in br acket-busting gam es. A r ecent conver gence of events caused m e to do som e r eflecting on my per sonal jour ney. A high school classm ate posted a pictur e on Facebook of our 1968-69 basketball team . We had w on the Far East Tour nam ent (our ver sion of the state cham pionship) the year befor e and w er e favor ed to w in it all that year. I?ll spar e you the hear tbr eaking details (w hich have been told in m ultiple ser m ons over the year s). We m anaged to lose by thr ee points w hen w e did not scor e in the last four m inutes. W hat astounded m e w as the level of pain that som e of us still car r y over that defeat as evidenced by the com m ents on that photo. Equally astounding w as our individual angst over the par t w e per sonally played in that loss. A few days after the Facebook post, a package ar r ived in the m ail fr om my high school coach. In the package w as a hom e gam e pr ogr am fr om the 1968-69 season, a Far East Tour nam ent pr ogr am fr om 1969 and a statistical sum m ar y of the 1969-70 basketball season ? my senior year. That opened up another conver sation w ith team m ates that w as equally if not m or e painful. M y senior season our team w ent 3 - 22, a com plete r ever sal fr om the success w e had enjoyed the year befor e. Ther e w er e any num ber of r easons posited for our dem ise and cer tainly w e didn?t have the talent w e had the year befor e. But, as I r um inated on that season, tw o things stood out. Fir st, w e w er e not a team . We w er e a gr oup of individuals w ho w er e m or e concer ned w ith per sonal success than being w illing to m ake the sacr ifices that w ould lead to team success. Second, w e w er e ver y undisciplined. I?ve com e to r ealize that both of these shor tcom ings ar e often pr esent in my spir itual life. W hen they ar e, the w ell-being of the chur ch, the body of Chr ist, is com pr om ised as is my per sonal spir itual gr ow th. The Apostle Paul in his fir st letter to the chur ch in Cor inth speaks dir ectly to these tw o per ils in the life of discipleship. He em phatically states that w hen w e ar e m or e concer ned about per sonal pr efer ences and asser ting our selves in the life of faith, divisiveness in the chur ch w ill quickly follow. Additionally, for us to m atur e in Chr istlikeness, discipline is r equir ed. Each year M ar ch M adness coincides w ith the season of Lent on the chur ch?s calendar. Lent is a season of r eflection and pr epar ation w hen w e take that inw ar d look and ask, ?God, how w ould You change m e? W her e ar e You leading m e? W hat ar e You calling m e to be and do?? As w e enter this season of Lent, I encour age us to take these questions ser iously to the end that w e gr ow in our pr actice of spir itual discipline and har ness our gifts, passions and ener gies tow ar d building up Chr ist?s body, the Chur ch.

Nothing ever r attled that beautiful w om an, and her favor ite w or ds w hen som eone w as distr essed about anything w er e, "Lay your tr oubles at the foot of the cr oss my dear ; w e have so m any blessings to be thankful for." In that spir it, I w ant to shar e som e of the m any financial blessings New Hope Chur ch exper ienced last year. -

Let's begin by celebr ating that w e ended the year in the black, despite som e ver y lean per iods over the cour se of the year. Then let's celebr ate that our ver y gener ous congr egation blessed us w ith financial gifts of over $1,000,000. Then w e can celebr ate that New Hope Refor m ed Chur ch used 10% of your gifts to bless local char ities as w ell as m issions acr oss the globe by paying out $105,000 in benevolence donations. W hat a pow er ful im pact w e w er e able to m ake for so m any people in need due to the gener osity of our congr egation. Our Endow m ent Fund w as able to suppor t gr ant r ecipients in excess of $5,000 and the pr ojection for gr ants for next year is extr em ely encour aging due to the over w helm ing success of the stained glass w indow cam paign (see below ), w hich allow ed them to add $180,000 to the pr incipal, allow ing for a gr eater num ber of gr ants in 2017.
M y gr andm other w as r ight. We have so m uch to be gr ateful for. On the adm inistr ative side, Consistor y is m aking final pr epar ations to launch our str ategic planning pr ocess that w ill act as our r udder for the next five year s. We w ill be for m ing sever al com m ittees to gather data and per for m studies in ever y ar ea w ithin New Hope Chur ch. We w ill be asking for com m itted m em ber s of the congr egation to assist in that pr ocess, so give som e thought to how you can help m ake New Hope the chur ch w e all w ant it to be. We ar e also in the pr ocess of "clear ing the clutter " to an even gr eater extent as w e have ar eas of the chur ch that ar e not com pliant w ith Liber ty Tow nship Fir e Depar tm ent code. The "Gr ail Room " (upstair s m echanical r oom ) m ust have any and all "com bustible" m ater ials r em oved and stor ed elsew her e or discar ded altogether. That pr ocess m ust be expedited as w e have been asked to becom e com pliant by the second w eek of M ar ch. If your gr oup has anything stor ed in the chur ch, w e need to m ake sur e it is stor ed pr oper ly or r em oved. We ar e r unning out of stor age space. Youth M inistr y has a busy few m onths ahead of us! On M ar ch 4 our youth w ill be hosting the beloved M ex i can Fi est a fr om 5:00PM to 7:30PM . Car m el l a W i l son and Lau r a Ar och a have been w or king tir elessly behind the scenes to cr eate an incr edible event for all. An enor m ous thank you to them for all of the har d w or k and dedication to our youth and this event. Thanks also to all those w ho have volunteer ed their tim e and donated food to help ser ve our congr egation. And m any thanks to ever yone w ho com es to the M exican Fiesta to suppor t our youth, suppor t our chur ch, and spend tim e together w ith our com m unity. I am gr ateful for each of you. Each w eek w e w ill dw ell together in a pr ayer spoken by Jesus dur ing his m inistr y and leading up to his death and r esur r ection. We w ill r eflect on how these pr ayer s continue to echo fr om one gener ation to the next, and shape us as God?s people living in the w or ld today.
