Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. (Genesis 2:1-3)

M y w ife Jean and I r ecently spent thr ee days in Yosem ite National Par k befor e heading to Sacr am ento w her e I'm attending law enfor cem ent chaplains? tr aining. The sights w er e spell-binding and spectacular and m ar velous to behold. As w e saw the effects of m illions of year s of glacier and w ater activity and other for ces of natur e, I could not help but be aw ed at the w ay in w hich God has or chestr ated cr eation. Looking upon El Capitan and Half Dom e, standing on Glacier Point and Taft Point, w atching the w ater cascade over Yosem ite Falls, Br idal Veil Falls, Ver nal Falls, and Nevada Falls, being captivated by the m ajesty of the sequoia tr ees w as tr uly br eathtaking.

W hile our tim e in Yosem ite w as r estful, it w as not w ithout activity. We w er e able to do som e str enuous hiking that helped us appr eciate the beauty of cr eation in w ays that sim ply do not happen at hom e. All of this w as r efr eshing and r estor ing to our spir its.

New Hope's Mission To Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist, and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist.

God has w oven into the r hythm of life a need for Sabbath r est. Scr iptur e tells us that on the seventh day God r ested fr om all the w or k that he had done. Finding tim e and space for r efr eshing and r estor ing r est is incr easingly m or e difficult in our fast-paced w or ld. W hatever day becom es our Sabbath usually is filled w ith activity - tasks to be done, pr ojects to be com pleted, childr en?s activities to obser ve. I confess that too often I find it har d to disengage and sim ply r est. (continued on next page)

The fir st six days w er e filled w ith vigor ous activity, jour neying fr om one spot to another w ith ar dor. On the evening of the sixth day, the leader of the guides said to the Am er icans ?tom or r ow w e r est.? Being the dr iven sor t that they w er e and thinking that m oney m ight m otivate, the Am er icans offer ed to pay the guides double. But the leader of the guides r esponded, ?No, tom or r ow w e r est. We need to let our souls catch up w ith our bodies.?
