......................... New Hope's Mission To Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist, and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist.
It?s a new year and I im agine that m any of us have r esolved to star t doing things and stop doing other s. I?m w r iting this on the second day of Januar y so, since this colum n is late by near ly a w eek and one half, per haps I should r esolve to be m or e tim ely in my subm issions for the chur ch new sletter ! It w as over tw o decades ago that I w as intr oduced to the w r itings of Steven Covey by my m other -in-law. One of Dr. Covey?s m or e m em or able quotes w as ?to live, to laugh, to love, to leave a legacy.? That seem s to be w ise counsel for fr am ing new year ?s r esolutions. As w e enter into this new year , I w ould encour age us to live m or e fully and exuber antly. I r ecognize that I m ay be m or e r isk toler ant in som e ar eas than other people, but I still find myself holding back and playing it safe in far too m any ar eas of life. M ar y Oliver ?s poem ?W hen Death Com es? challenges m e, par ticular ly in its last lines. "W hen it's over , I w ant to say: all my life I w as a br ide m ar r ied to am azem ent. I w as the br idegr oom , taking the w or ld into my ar m s. W hen it's over , I don't w ant to w onder if I have m ade of my life som ething par ticular , and r eal. I don't w ant to find myself sighing and fr ightened, or full of ar gum ent. I don't w ant to end up sim ply having visited this w or ld. "
Ar e w e all able to find m or e cause for laughter dur ing this year ? As I look ar ound and obser ve w hat is happening in our cultur e, it appear s that ther e is a pall of gr im hopelessness that hangs over us like a dar k cloud. We r ecently saw the m ovie ?M ar y Poppins Retur ns.? It m ay be a function of age but I enjoyed the fir st edition so m uch m or e. The song Uncle Alber t sang, ?I Love to Laugh? fills m e w ith m ir th: ? I love to laugh, long and loud and clear ; I love to laugh, it?s getting w or se ever y year. If you w er e w ith us on Chr istm as Eve, you hear d m e quote/sing a song com posed by Hal David and Bur t Bachar ach that w as popular over 50 year s ago, ?W hat the Wor ld Needs Now is Love.? In a w or ld that is filed w ith anger and polar izing language and behavior , I w ould invite us to love gener ously and extr avagantly w ith a love that?s not just for som e but for ever yone. Finally, and m ost significantly, I w ould challenge us to consider the legacy w e leave. W ith that, I hope that you join us in w or ship over these next sever al Sundays as w e consider together w hat it m eans to live a significant life. Ther e is so m uch that distr acts and deter s us fr om leaving a legacy of significance, so m uch so that Jesus?w or ds ?for w hat w ill it pr ofit them to gain the w hole w or ld and for feit their life?? ar e incr edibly haunting. M ay you and your s enjoy all of God?s gr eatest blessings in this new year as you live, laugh, love and leave a legacy!

The last sever al m onths have been difficult for our fam ily. We lost my beloved gr andfather , M ar k?s tr easur ed gr andm other , and tr agically lost M ar k?s best fr iend fr om college to a hear t attack . Gr ief and joy have been close fr iends in our lives r ecently. W her e one exists, the other follow s closely behind. As painful as this season has been in our lives, it has also been a beautiful season of deep r eflection and honesty. So as w e begin another year , I w anted to shar e w ith you things w e have gleaned fr om the losses of 3 of the m ost esteem ed people in our lives. Poppa - M y Gr andfather : He is one of the m ost r em ar kable m en I have ever know n. He possessed gifts that in our cur r ent cultur al clim ate seem to be incr edibly r ar e. One of the m ost beautiful things about my gr andfather : he could disagr ee w ith you on ever ything in this life, and yet you w ould still, no m atter w ho you w er e, feel loved, r espected, and car ed for by him . Few people on this ear th possess this gift, but he
did. He knew that it w as the per son that had value sim ply for w ho they w er e and w ho their Cr eator w as; their value w as not contingent on if they thought the sam e w ay he did, or believed in the sam e things. Another thing I loved about my Poppa as I gr ew older w as being given the gift of w atching him live out his faith in Jesus thr ough his actions and love for other s. He never stopped car ing for anyone w ho had the honor of being in his pr esence. And he NEVER stopped gr ow ing in his faith and seeking the Lor d?s face, or asking tough questions about his faith. At the beginning of this past year I w ent to visit him and ther e lay my Poppa, 94 year s old, w ith a Bible study next to his bed because he w as still actively pur suing a deeper r elationship w ith His Father in Heaven. I tell this stor y to the youth at New Hope. I encour age them to look to a m an w ho, even at 94 and 95 year s old never stopped pur suing God, continued to ask tough questions, and to see that a beautiful life lived in faith is not one of per fection or know ing all of the answ er s, or one w ithout doubt. A life of faith w as lived out by my Poppa because of the im per fections, the unansw er able
questions, the doubts; and because he never let those things deter Him fr om seeking the face of the God w ho loves him . Gr am m ie M ar k?s Gr andm other : She w as an incr edible for ce of love and life and ser vice. She loved God deeply, her fam ily w ell, and lived out God?s calling on her life to be of ser vice to other s. Her obituar y m ade m e laugh out loud because her ser vice seem ed to have no end. Gr am m ie w as 95 w hen she passed aw ay. Until the m om ent she becam e sick this year she never stopped car ing for those ar ound her and ser ving her com m unity using the specific gifts God gave her. She w as an active m em ber of her chur ch, w as a m em ber of the Olivia Cir cle, PERI, Shelby County Far m Bur eau, Sidney-Shelby County Senior Center , Tar Hollow volunteer , United M ethodist Wom en, and Paw s for Jesus dog tr ainer. She w as a 4-H advisor for a total of 67 year s for the Sow and Gr ow Club and Paw Pr ints Dog Club. As you can see, she valued ser ving other s.
Gr am m ie under stood that she w as blessed to be a blessing, and lived her entir e life under standing Chr ist?s gr eat call to give her life aw ay in ser vice and car e for other s. Lives w er e changed because of her devotion to them and not saying ?No? or ?Not now ? w hen God called her to be His light in all facets of life.
taught him . Things like: how to m ake a m ixed tape, how to use call w aiting, how to talk to a gir l. But Adam w as also the fir st of us to know the value of honesty. And he w as the fir st to be honest about his str uggles. He knew that w hen the stakes w er e high, he w ould w ant to be honest about his str uggles, and his hope even in the dar kest m om ents, w as alw ays found in Jesus.? I shar e these stor ies because each of these people loved Jesus w ith all that they w er e her e on ear th; and now they get to love God and be loved by Him w ith all that they ar e in Heaven w ith Him for all of eter nity.
Adam -M ar k?s best fr iend fr om college: As w e said our goodbyes to Adam , w e had the pr ivilege of listening to his childhood fr iends shar e stor ies of Adam ?s life, his love and devotion to his w ife and 4 young childr en, and the hope he had in Jesus. I continue to r eflect on w hat one fr iend said, ?Adam w as the youngest of 3 br other s, so he w as the fir st to intr oduce to all of us the ?cool? things his older br other s
I am so thankful that each of them knew Jesus this side of heaven. Their joys w er e all the m or e joy-filled, and their sor r ow s w er e never exper ienced alone. After w alking this r oad of gr ief for sever al m onths now it has only m ade m e m or e acutely aw ar e that I w ant all of our loved ones, and
even those w e don?t under stand, to know the hope w e have in Jesus, to know and under stand the love He has for us, for them ? no m atter w hat. W hat a tr easur e know ing Jesus is. Living our lives filled w ith gr atitude for His unending love for us, w e can r each out and ser ve a w or ld that is hur ting and has little hope. As a chur ch body w e encour age our youth to love and ser ve God by loving, ser ving, and car ing for other s in our chur ch and in the com m unity. So I encour age you: find a place to ser ve, give of your tim e and talents, never stop asking questions and gr ow ing in your faith, show kindness to all people r egar dless of w hether you under stand them or not, love people w ithout an agenda, and by your life?s successes and failur es shar e the hope you have in Jesus. It m atter s.
