......................... New Hope's Mission To Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist, and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist.

Because I had the tim e and because I knew that our new sletter editor w as insistent on a har d deadline for this issue, I took a few m om ents to per use new sletter colum ns that I had w r itten ten year s ago. I adm it I w as sur pr ised at som e of w hat I r ead and gr ateful for m uch. M y sur pr ise cam e w hen I r ealized that it w as ten year s ago that my w ife Jean and I w er e pr epar ing for our son Pieter ?s gr aduation fr om high school and all thr ee of us w er e pr epar ing for my sabbatical w ith a m onth-long tr ip to Japan. On the one hand, my sabbatical seem s as though it happened just yester day w hile on the other hand it seem s so long ago. I r em em ber the excitem ent that w e felt, know ing that this w ould be the tr ip of a lifetim e. I also r em em ber the appr ehension I felt, w onder ing how I and New Hope w ould sur vive thr ee m onths apar t. The sabbatical w as a w onder ful gift, both fr om the Lilly Endow m ent and fr om all at New Hope Chur ch w ho car r ied on so w ell to m ake sur e that m inistr y happened in my absence. And, my appr ehension w as ill-founded for m inistr y happened exceptionally w ell at New Hope dur ing those thr ee m onths. M y gr atitude cam e, as I r e-r ead colum ns fr om ten year s ago, w hen I r ealized that w hat w as a pr ior ity at New Hope then is still a pr ior ity today ? developing m atur e disciples or follow er s of Jesus. Cer tainly our under standing of and em phasis on discipleship has br oadened. We ar e still ver y com m itted to faith for m ation and spir itual developm ent of all, fr om childr en to adults. W hen I consider how tr ansfor m ing The Journey, A Way of Life and Walking W ith Others have been for so m any at New Hope, not only am I gr ateful but my com m itm ent to encour aging m any to par ticipate in this ventur e is even fir m er. We?r e gr ow ing in our under standing of discipleship in tw o pr incipal ar eas. The fir st is in being m issionally engaged or exter nally focused. As w e begin a new year , I w ant to affir m that w e w ill continue this dir ection as w e str ive to be, not the best chur ch in the com m unity, but the best chur ch f or the com m unity. We ser ve, not at the neglect of faith, but because of it. Our gr atitude for w hat God in Chr ist has done for us com pels us to ser ve in Jesus? nam e. So, expect and be on the lookout for m or e ser vice oppor tunities in Jesus?nam e ? all-chur ch outr each events, a m ovem ent tow ar d exter nally focused sm all gr oups, and pr actical neighbor -loving. A second ar ea that w ill be a pr ior ity for our gr ow th in discipleship is in the ar ea of stew ar dship. We?r e com m itted to helping all at New Hope have a better under standing of w hat a stew ar d?s life looks like and w hy stew ar dship is integr al to our spir itual gr ow th and w ell-being. We?r e also com m itted to doing our best to help all discover the genuine joy of gener osity. Likew ise, w e?r e com m itted to helping all gr ow in the pr actice of gener osity. At our Decem ber tow n m eeting that focused on the 2017 budget, I m entioned that w e m ust face the br utal facts of stew ar dship at New Hope. One of those br utal facts is that 50% of the households at our chur ch contr ibute ver y m odestly or do not contr ibute at all. I?m not going to har angue or br ow -beat anyone. I sim ply speak for the leader ship of New Hope w hen I say that, at one and the sam e tim e, w e have a tr em endous oppor tunity and tr em endous challenge ahead of us. As w e str ide into a new year , let us hear and pay attention to the w or ds of the Risen Chr ist to the chur ch in Philadelphia, "Look, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut." - Revelation 3:8a . Let?s r esolve to w alk thr ough that open door of discipleship and beyond ? follow ing, ser ving, giving, loving out of gr atitude for God?s gr eatest gift.

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." - M atthew 6:21 (NIV) Ther e's a com m on belief at m ost chur ches, including New Hope, that w hen the pastor and other leader s talk about financial giving folks stay aw ay. If that's tr ue, it's a r eal sham e. Not because anyone should feel guilty about w hat they do or don't give, but because those w ho don't under stand W HY w e give ar e m issing out on one of the biggest joys of our faith. I'm not going to tell you that giving gener ously to New Hope Chur ch w ill br ing you fam e and for tune, or even get you a r eser ved pew ever y Sunday. But the joy of tr ue and faithful giving ? giving w ith a cheer ful hear t, giving back a por tion of w hat God has given to you, giving as a w ay to thank and pr aise our loving and gener ous God ? is tr uly one of God's r ichest blessings. The r eason w e ask you to give financially to New Hope is because each and ever y one of us is a cr ucial par t of God's vision for this chur ch. Sim ply put, w e ar e called to ser ve our com m unity in Jesus' nam e. We ar e blessed to have so m any faithful ser vants shar ing their tim e and talents in so m any w ays, w hich is just as im por tant as financial giving. But the r eality is that it takes m oney to m eet som e of the deepest needs of our local, national, and inter national com m unities. The books ar en't closed yet for 2016, but w e expect that for the year New Hope Chur ch w ill have contr ibuted near ly $100,000 to over a dozen differ ent m inistr ies doing God's w or k in ever y cor ner of the w or ld including our ow n backyar d. And of cour se it also takes m oney to suppor t our m inistr y pr ogr am s, our facility, and our staff, all of w hich pr ovide the r esour ces w e need to effectively shar e God's love w ith other s. Giving shouldn't be scar y. Asking you to give shouldn't be scar y, either. It isn't our intent to pr essur e anyone, or m ake you feel like you can't possibly m easur e up. How m uch you give is betw een you and God. Talk to God about it, but m or e im por tantly listen to w hat God has to say to you. God w ill never steer you w r ong. Giving also shouldn't be difficult, so New Hope offer s sever al w ays for you to m ake your financial gifts. Just about ever yone know s w e pass the plate each Sunday. But w hen you can't be at chur ch, or if you'd r ather use your debit or cr edit car d, you can give by text to 614.467.4464 or online at New HopeWor sh i p.com /Gi v i n g. Both these m ethods offer the option of m aking a one tim e gift or setting up a r ecur r ing gift if that's easier for you. An even sim pler w ay to set up r ecur r ing giving is to use your bank's autom atic online bill pay. M ost banks offer this ser vice for fr ee, and it doesn't cost New Hope anything to accept online bill paym ents. I w ant to extend a challenge. Just once, give a gift that's m or e than you usually give. See w hat happens. W ill it m ake you uncom for table? M aybe. W ill it m ake you think m or e about your giving? Absolutely. As alw ays, thank you for your continued financial suppor t of New Hope's m ission to Reach peopl e f or Ch r i st , Root peopl e i n Ch r i st , an d Rel ease peopl e t o ser ve Ch r i st . One last note on the status of our sear ch for a new Youth Dir ector. As of this w r iting tw o qualified candidates ar e being consider ed, and final inter view s w ill be conducted soon. We hope to identify the per son God has called to this im por tant r ole in ear ly Januar y.
