......................... New Hope's Mission To Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist, and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist.
Just befor e Chr istm as Lor etta Rolle, LeAnne Siddell and I tr aveled to Dallas, TX for the thir d session of our Refor m ed Chur ch in Am er ica M issional Engagem ent Leader ship Com m unity. As I?ve pr eviously m entioned, w e ar e involved w ith five other chur ches in our denom ination as w e think str ategically and tactically about changing the focus of our chur ches fr om inter nal to exter nal. W hile at this session, I w as pr odded to consider once again a question that I?ve been ponder ing since our pr evious session in June of 2015. It?s a question that is tim ely as w e begin a new year : W hat would it mean for New Hope Church to be, not the best church in our community, but the best church FOR our community? M uch of w hat I?ve r ead and hear d over my year s of m inistr y has em phasized distinguishing the chur ch in the com m unity - bigger and m or e beautiful facilities that ?w ow ? the fir st tim e visitor, cater ing to their ever y com for t and convenience; m or e and better pr ogr am s that m eet ever y conceivable hum an need and w ant; abundant staff at low cost that w ill do the lion?s shar e (all?) of the m inistr y so that chur ch m em ber s and attendees ar e ser ved r ather than ser ve. You get the gist of w hat I?m saying. Now, I w onder. I w onder how w e w ould use our r esour ces if w e w anted to be the best chur ch for the com m unity? How m uch w ould w e dir ect tow ar d our ow n pr ogr am s and facilities? How m uch of our r esour ces w ould w e use to m eet hum an need and tr ansfor m lives in our com m unity? I w onder w ith w hom w e?d collabor ate? Would w e w or k w ith those w ho ar e ?like? us, w ith the end goal of building up the m em ber ship of New Hope Chur ch? Or w ould w e deploy people to w or k w ith m ultiple par tner s so that our com m unity begins to appr oxim ate m or e and m or e of the kingdom of God? I w onder if our em phasis w ould be on gather ing or sending? Would w e appr oach m ar keting New Hope fr om the per spective of ?com e and see? or w ould our em phasis be ?go, ser ve and tell?? I w onder w hat our desir ed outcom es w ould be? Would w e m easur e the im pact of our m inistr y by the num ber of people w ho com e thr ough our door s each w eek? Or, w ould our m inistr y im pact be m easur ed by the num ber of people w ho ar e deployed to ser ve in our com m unity? It?s not only a new year, it?s a new day. W hile spir itual inter est is high, m any people no longer look to the chur ch to find spir itual vitality and authenticity because they per ceive the chur ch to be ir r elevant or disengaged fr om their com m unity. I w elcom e this new day as a w akeup call for New Hope Chur ch to pr ay, to think str ategically and to w or k tactically to the end that w e becom e the chur ch God intends for us to be, a chur ch w hose hear t is for our com m unity.

Then Jesus told them what they could expect for themselves: "Anyone who intends to come with me ha s to let me lea d. You?r e not in the dr iver ?s seat - I a m. Don?t r un fr om suffer ing; embr a ce it. Follow me a nd I ?ll show you how. Self-help is no help at a ll. Self-sa cr ifice is the way, my way, to finding your self, your tr ue self. W hat good would it do to get ever ything you wa nt a nd lose you, the r ea l you?" (Luke 9:25-27, The M essage) Ear lier this m onth the Bar na Gr oup r eleased new statistical data concer ning the state of discipleship in Am er ica. W hen asked "W hat ar e the top bar r ier s to spir itual gr ow th?" both pr acticing Chr istians and non-pr acticing Chr istians r esponded w ith "spir itual gr ow th w ill r equir e a lot of har d w or k" and "the gener al busyness of life." Per haps you can r elate to their r esponses. Yes, life is busy, and yes, spir itual gr ow th w ill r equir e a lot of har d w or k . I'm not going to tr y to deny that r eality. After all, Jesus never said a life of discipleship w ould be a fast or easy pr ocess. Instead, Jesus said this: "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves, and take up their cross daily and follow me." (Luke 9:23) Follow ing Chr ist, gr ow ing spir itually, is a daily action. Last m onth you r eceived an Adult M inistr y new sletter w ith all the differ ent studies and oppor tunities happening this W inter. A few ar e highlighted in this new sletter, and all ar e listed online at New HopeWor sh i p.com /Adu l t s. Som e classes w ill r equir e a little outside r eading and other s ar e designed for you to sim ply com e and engage in God's w or d. I pr ay that you w ill cr ack your ow n bar r ier s to spir itual gr ow th this season, and take par t in a discipleship oppor tunity her e at New Hope Chur ch.

He's the supreme problem in higher criticism. He's the fundamental doctrine in true theology. He's the cardinal necessity of spiritual religion...Do you know Him? SOUL KEEPI NG Sundays at 10:15AM , January 3 through February 28 Facilitated by Kathy Dunkin W hen is the last tim e you thought about the state of your soul? The health of your soul isn't just a m atter of saved or unsaved. It's the hinge on w hich the r est of your life hangs. It's the differ ence betw een deep, satisfied spir ituality and a r estless, dispassionate faith. In an age of m ater ialism and consum er ism that tr ies to buy its w ay to happiness, m any souls ar e star ved and unhealthy, unsatisfied by false pr om ises of status and w ealth. W hat does this m ean for us individually and as a chur ch to "per sever e in pr ayer " and "m ake our r equests know n to God"? As Pastor Jim Cym bala states in his w or k on pr ayer, "The Lor d cher ishes his people, and out of that love flow s his desir e to bless them and m atur e them . It is thr ough these unm istakable blessings that other s can w itness God's goodness and declar e, 'Look w hat the Lor d has done!'
