W hat gets you out of bed in the m or ning? That?s a question I occasionally ask other s and fr equently ask myself. I r ecognize that for m any of us it?s the alar m clock and for som e of us it?s the pet w ho has to be let out. But, at a deeper level, w hat gets us out of bed in the m or ning is som ething m uch m or e significant.
calling has been to ser ve Chr ist by ser ving other s in His nam e and w ith His love, and conviction and exper ience have tr uly confir m ed that the Holy Spir it is the one w ho effects ultim ate, significant change.
The sad tr agedy, tr avesty even, is that for m uch of the w or ld it?s pur ely about sur vival. Even in our countr y, the w ealthiest nation in histor y, ther e ar e som e w hose sole focus is on finding and doing w hat it takes to stay alive for another day. I believe that w e, the Chur ch, ar e called to addr ess this need and ar e far better equipped than gover nm ent to do so.
One of the author s w ho I?ve long appr eciated, Fr eder ick Buechner , w r ites this in W ishful Thinking: A Theological ABC that I bought near ly 40 year s ago: ?The place God calls you to is w her e your deep gladness and the w or ld?s deep hunger m eet.? So, as you ask your self w hat gets you out of bed in the m or ning, I invite you to ponder w her e your deep gladness and the w or ld?s deep hunger m eet and ask, ?God, could you possibly be calling m e to ser ve you in the place w her e those tw o m eet??
But, that?s not w hy I asked the question ?w hat gets you out of bed in the m or ning?? I tr uly am inter ested in lear ning about a per son?s passion, w hat fuels the fir e of their im agination and m akes life m eaningful for them . For m e, it is the hum bling pr ivilege of investing in another ?s life and w atching how God can use that investm ent to change a per son?s life. It?s a hum bling pr ivilege because that per son is inviting m e into their ?inner space? w her e their hopes, their aspir ations and dr eam s live alongside their fear s, their questions and even their pain. It?s so m eaningful for m e because my life?s
Addendum ; The old adage says that ?all good things m ust com e to an end.? For the past 33 year s, I?ve sent a hand-w r itten car d to ever y adult and ever y child at New Hope on their bir thday and ever y couple on their w edding anniver sar y (if w e have those dates in our r ecor ds). One of my values w as that ever yone at New Hope Chur ch should get a car d fr om their pastor on their bir thday or anniver sar y. It is a standing joke w ith som e of my fr iends at New Hope that w hen a car d ar r ives at their hom e, the challenge am ong fam ily m em ber s is to
see w ho can r ead it. I?ll adm it it. I?m one w ho subscr ibes to the dictum that the m or e illegible the handw r iting, the higher the IQ!
anniver sar y car ds. We just had a conver sation am ong som e of us on staff and they advised m e that this is one of the w ays w e can exer cise cost containm ent.
W hen I began this pr actice, a postage stam p w as $.15 or $.16. Just this w eek postage w ent to $.47. I r an the num ber s and discover ed that I send appr oxim ately 1000 bir thday car ds each year and m ost like 200 or m or e

Gr eetings! I am ver y pleased to shar e a br ief update on w hat has been happening over the past m onth w ith our New Hope fam ily. The m onth of Januar y has been heavily focused on attem pting to fill the Financial Adm inistr ator position her e as w e said goodbye to Amy Br obst at the end of 2017. Amy did a w onder ful job for us and w e ar e gr ateful for all her har d w or k . We continue to pr ay for God?s lead, and tr ust that He w ill br ing the r ight per son in His per fect tim ing. In the m eantim e, w e ar e ever so gr ateful to Gail Headlee for her w illingness to step in on an inter im basis. We par ticular ly appr eciate her skills and exper tise in helping close the books for 2017. So once again, I just w ant to expr ess my deep gr atitude to both Amy and Gail for their har d w or k and ser vice to the Lor d?s w or k . As you can see in the financial r epor t section below , our actual incom e for the m onth of Decem ber exceeded budgeted incom e by appr oxim ately $20,000. Expenditur es w er e just slightly above the budget am ount due to som e facility and technology-r elated expenses including enhanced par king lot lighting and a new inter net safety fir ew all.
Over all, year -to-date expenditur es w er e appr oxim ately 7.0 per cent below w hat w as budgeted. Thanks to the ver y gener ous giving by the m em ber s of New Hope, w e star ted the year in a str ong cash position and one that is m ar kedly im pr oved over this tim e last year. In addition, w e have been able to incr ease our capital r eser ve account to appr oxim ately $72,000. This is tr uly a testam ent to the Lor d?s faithfulness as w ell as that of His people. We continue to pr ay for w isdom as w e seek to stew ar d His r esour ces. ?Faith show s the r eality of w hat w e hope for ; it is the evidence of things w e cannot see.?~ Hebr ew s 11:1 (NLT) We ar e also ver y excited to shar e that New Hope Chur ch has a new w ebsite! Ther e ar e so m any things happening w ithin our youth pr ogr am ! Confir m ation classes began in the beginning of Januar y and w e hosted our fir st Lock-In/Retr eat. Our plans w er e to head to the Tr out Club in Br inkhaven, but God had other plans and w e ar e so thankful that He did! As all of our youth and volunteer leader s ar r ived at chur ch on Fr iday after noon w e all unpacked our bags and hunker ed dow n for the fir st big snow stor m of the year. Ther e w as som ething so special about the tim e
w e all spent together at the chur ch that w eekend. We gr ew in our faith, w e gr ew in gr atitude for the incr edible adults that gave up tim e and sleep to ser ve our youth, and w e gr ew in r elationships w ith one another. The tim e w e spent together w as invaluable and cr eated m em or ies for all involved that w ill last a lifetim e. M ar k you r cal en dar s f or t h e M ex i can Fi est a on Sat u r day, M ar ch 3! We continue to offer a Chr istian Based pr eschool and Kinder gar ten pr ogr am for childr en 2.5 year s old thr ough Kinder gar ten. We take gr eat pr ide in the positive Chr istian atm ospher e that w e cr eate thr ough our daily activities; tr eating each other equally w ith r espect and kindness. In addition to our designated Bible Tim e, w e incor por ate a Chr istian atm ospher e in our classr oom s thr ough daily pr ayer and teaching the Chr istian m essage. We w ill have a silent auction and book fair , all the pr oceeds w ill go to Nationw ide Childr en?s Hospital.
