In r ecent year s w henever I have m et w ith som eone w ho has applied for a position at New Hope Chur ch, I ask them if they have consider ed the possibility that their expectations of w hat it is like to w or k for a chur ch w ill be shatter ed. M any r espond w ith a ver y per plexed look on their face, not sur e if I?m ser ious. Then, if that per son is hir ed, in a few m onths I?ll hear them say som ething like this, "I thought w or king for the chur ch w ould be differ ent. I didn?t r ealize that people in the chur ch w ould tr eat each other as poor ly as people do in the 'r eal' w or ld." I often hear sim ilar com m ents fr om people w ho w or k for faith based or ganizations and businesses.

New Hope's Mission To Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist, and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist.

It w as said of the ear ly Chr istians, "see how they love each other." M ight it be said of people w ithin the chur ch today, "see how they w ound each other ?" It?s sad but tr ue that w e Chr istians ar e capable of being ver y unloving and ver y hur tful. All of w hich m akes m e w ish that I could com e up w ith a clever par aphr ase of Gr oucho M ar x?s com m ent, "I w ouldn?t w ant to belong to any or ganization that w ould have m e as a m em ber."

This m onth w e?ll obser ve and celebr ate Valentine?s Day, a day w hen w e expr ess our affection and appr eciation for those w e love. I w onder if w e can take the m eaning of that day and m ake it centr al to the w ay that w e tr eat each other ever y day, not only w ithin the chur ch but w ith ever yone.

W hen you inter act w ith som eone w ith w hom you have a disagr eem ent or conflict, befor e you speak ask your self these questions: Is w hat I am about to say kind? Am I speaking w ith the ultim ate intent to build up r ather than destr oy? W ill w hat I say m ir r or the love that Chr ist has for that per son? Jesus said, "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another." - John 13:34

Looking back over the past six m onths, since taking over as Chur ch Adm inistr ator in June, the them e has been CHANGE!!! As m any of you m ight have hear d m e say befor e, Woody Hayes alw ays told us, "You ar e either getting better or you ar e getting w or se. It is im possible to r em ain the sam e." As necessar y as change is, it is also ver y difficult. One r eason people r esist change is because they focus on w hat they have to give up, r ather than w hat they have to gain.

New Hope exper ienced a lot of change in 2016. We r eplaced the chur ch adm inistr ator , r edesigned the Childr en's M inistr y and hir ed four ver y dedicated and enthusiastic new staff m em ber s to guide that m inistr y, w hile still looking for a childr en's m usic leader. We had a deeply loved and r espected leader of our Youth M inistr y r etir e and have w or ked extr em ely har d to find a r eplacem ent. The Holy Spir it hear d our pr ayer s and w e ar e thr illed to have Li n dsey Al l en join our TEAM and take over the r eins of the Youth M inistr y.

As a staff, w e have had ver y thoughtful m eetings, identifying expectations and for m ulating a m indset that w e m ust w or k together for the gr eater good. We have accepted that the good of the m any outw eighs the needs of a few. In or der to do that, w e had to develop a TEAM m entality, doing aw ay w ith w hat business and industr y calls "silos." The m entality that things belong to one staffer or m inistr y had to be changed. We ar e doing m ar velous w or k in that ar ea and ar e m oving for w ar d cr eating an ALL IN attitude.

Financially, one of the changes the Deacons appr oved w as discontinuing standalone r evenue accounts, an unr ealistic incom e "silo." Her e is w hy it is unr ealistic. All giving goes into the Gener al Fund (our ONLY account) and is used for payr oll, all m inistr y expenses, m onthly bills, and any capital expenditur es or building r epair s to God's Glor y!

A chur ch budget is unlike any other budget you w ill w or k w ith unless you?ve had a job that is paid on str aight com m issions. We sur vive based solely on giving, PERIOD. If enough m oney doesn?t com e in that m onth to m eet expenses, w e can?t suppor t the expenditur es w e've m ade. Setting aside a cer tain am ount of cash on a specific line item , to be used exclusively for that line item , is NOT r ealistic in a chur ch budget. If w e need that m oney to m eet bills, it is used to pay those bills. It's w or th noting that w e take our r esponsibility as good stew ar ds of your financial gifts VERY ser iously, and w atch our spending VERY car efully.

No less than thr ee tim es dur ing budget year 2016, w e had to take m oney out of our M oney M ar ket Savings Account to m eet our m onthly obligations. It?s like the salesper son w ho didn?t m ake enough sales to pay the bills taking m oney out of their Childr en?s College Savings that m onth to pay the m or tgage and buy gr ocer ies. It is living financially, like I lived m ost of my life, fr om m onth to m onth. Dipping into the savings account thr ee tim es last year should be a w akeup call that w e can no longer oper ate that w ay and sur vive. (continued on next page)

Our building is now over 10 year s old. We ar e at the point w her e system s have begun to w ear out. We have alr eady r eplaced the dr ivew ay and tw o m ajor HVAC units, w ith a thir d unit now in need of significant r epair at a cost of $25,000+. Futur e anticipated capital expenses include r eplacing the r oof, r eplacing the w indow s, sealing and/or r eplacing the par king lot, and so on. We cannot continue to pay for these pr ojects out of the Gener al Fund, w hich is intended to cover our nor m al m inistr y and oper ating expenses. Consistor y has acknow ledged a cr itical need to pr epar e financially for cur r ent and futur e capital expenses, and w e ar e investigating w ays to build a separ ate Capital Reser ve Fund in an acceler ated m anner. M or e on that as w e get fur ther along w ith those plans.

Now is the tim e to look for w ar d, lear ning fr om the past, to develop a deliber ate Str ategic Plan to guide New Hope thr ough the next five year per iod. We w ill identify TEAM Captains fr om Consistor y and Gr eat Consistor y (those w ho have pr eviously ser ved on Consistor y) to lead an intensive, intentional study into best pr actices and str ategies for success in the follow ing eight ar eas: -

WORSHIP: including but not lim ited to Living Water Wor ship, Tr aditional Wor ship, Chr istm as, Easter , and other special w or ship ser vices.

M INISTRY: including but not lim ited to Adults, Childr en, Youth, Young Adults, M usic, and Fellow ship.

PASTORAL CARE: including but not lim ited to w eddings, funer als, hom e bound car e, hospital visits, pr ayer chain, pr ayer calendar s, and Elder phone calls to the congr egation.

OUTREACH: including but not lim ited to M issional Engagem ent, Benevolences, Pr eschool, and Welcom e Team .

COM M UNICATIONS/TECHNOLOGY: including but not lim ited to w ebsite, em ail, social m edia, pr int com m unications, display m onitor s, adver tising, com puter s and netw or king, sound equipm ent, pr ojector s, and scr eens.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS: including but not lim ited to upkeep and m aintenance, utilities, expansion, safety and secur ity, and usage.

FINANCE: including but not lim ited to budgeting, m or tgage, giving, Endow m ent Fund, salar y and benefits, capital r eser ve, and r epor ting to the congr egation.

LEADERSHIP: including but not lim ited to leader ship developm ent and succession planning.

We w ant our stakeholder s to help identify specific needs and m ethods to m eet these needs. We w ill have open and honest conver sations about our m ission and how ever ything w e do at New Hope Chur ch m ust suppor t that m ission. Each TEAM w ill w or k together to develop up to thr ee str ategies for im pr ovem ent in each ar ea, along w ith indicator s of success tow ar d r eaching those goals.

Our annual outr each w ill begin in M ar ch, and this year w e have chosen Nationw ide Childr en's Hospital as our outr each par tner. We have sever al childr en in our pr ogr am s w ho use their ser vices r egular ly, and to show our appr eciation and suppor t w e w ill be collecting toys and financial donations for the hospital.
