As I m entioned in a Sunday m essage ear lier this m onth, I r ecently obser ved tw o ver y closely r elated m ilestones. July 19 w as the 40th anniver sar y of my or dination as M inister of Wor d and Sacr am ent in the Refor m ed Chur ch in Am er ica. For ty year s ago on August 1, I began life as a ?pastor ? on the staff of the Second Refor m ed Chur ch in Kalam azoo, M I. It?s har d for m e to r ealize that I have been pastor ing for four decades. As I r em inisce, ther e?s m uch that has changed. Per haps it?s m ildly am using to r eflect together on som e of those changes. W hat follow s is in no par ticular or der of pr ior ity. Cer tainly the r evolution in technology w ithin the life of the chur ch and her pastor s has been nothing shor t of r em ar kable. W hen I began pastor ing, no one I knew had a per sonal com puter. One of my colleagues dictated his ser m ons and our chur ch secr etar y w ould tr anscr ibe them fr om tape. Another typed his on a m anual typew r iter. I w as for tunate to have pur chased an electr ic typew r iter w ith funds that I r eceived as a gr aduation gift. The w eekly w or ship bulletins w er e typed on stencils and then duplicated (it w as hor r ible to cor r ect er r or s). If you w ould have told m e that w e w ould pr oject lyr ics to songs/hym ns on a scr een instead of using The Hym nal, I w ould have
questioned your sanity. That having been said, w e did use an over head pr ojector w ith tr anspar encies for songs that w e sang dur ing Sunday School opening exer cises. (Yes, that w as a BIG thing in that day.) Voice m ail w as an unknow n. We did have an answ er ing m achine (fir st gener ation) that w e used to r ecor d a daily devotional. Other than that, it had no use. Cell phones and em ail w er e not in our w ildest im agination. If you w anted to contact m e/us, you m ay have called my hom e phone (a r otar y I m ight add) or you w ould have left a m essage w ith the chur ch secr etar y and she w ould place a phone m essage slip on my desk . Ther e w as som ething w onder ful about not being accessible 24/7. Another change has to do w ith the com petition, or lack ther eof, that the chur ch faced. Believe it or not, m ost fam ilies attended w or ship near ly ever y Sunday. We actually could count on Wednesday evenings to be r eser ved for chur ch activities. W hen w e planned w or ship, par ticular ly a ser ies of m essages, or chur ch activities w e sim ply did not ask the question ?w ho w ill be ther e?? Ever yone w as ther e unless ther e w as a m ajor cr isis. Today, w e face com petition fr om spor ts, school activities and any num ber of w eekly events that assum e pr ior ity over faith or our childr en?s
gr ow th in faith. One of the significant changes that causes m e gr eat concer n is that, back in the day, Chr istian people could disagr ee w ithout being disagr eeable. Actually, our nation does the sam e. I?ve w r itten and spoken elsew her e about how polar ized our countr y has becom e. We have lost the vir tue of r easonable public discour se. If you?r e not on my side, I have not tim e and space for you. As Ar chie Bunker (only you w ho enjoyed the 70?s r em em ber him ) w ould have said, ?Case closed!?
Lastly, as I r em inisce, I also r ecognize that the r espect for cler gy has changed. For ty year s ago, people actually paid attention to w hat M inister s thought and said. M ost com m unity or ganizations w anted a cler gy r epr esentative pr esent because they knew she/he car r ied a cer tain level of influence. The loss of r espect is som ething for w hich that, sad to say, w e cler gy ar e r esponsible. So, I don?t expect m any of you to r ead this or to give my r um inations any cr edibility.

We ar e all singer s. It is w r itten in our hum an DNA and is par t of God?s per fect design. Your ability to sing is fear fully and w onder fully m ade (Psalm 139). W hen w e sing to pr aise God, so m uch m or e than our voice box is engaged; w e r eceive life-giving br eath to our lungs. God has cr eated our m inds to judge pitch and lyr ic; to think thr ough m usical concepts; to engage the intellect, im agination and m em or y; and to r em em ber w hat is set to a tune (I'm sur e m or e of you can r em em ber m or e lyr ics set to m usic than can r ecite scr iptur e). God has for m ed our hear ts to be m oved w ith a depth of feeling and a w hole r ange of em otions as m elody and har m ony collide and the tr uths of w ho God is, and w hose w e ar e, sink in.
sing! He is far less concer ned w ith your tune than your integr ity. W hen w e sing as Chr istians, it begins w ith the hear t, not the lips. (Ephesians 5:19). Your heavenly Father car es w hether and w hat you sing, but He does not m ind how w ell you sing it (think upon hear ing your ow n childr en sing a tune and the joy it br ings you). Let?s be a congr egation that sings out! As w e sing together , w e r eflect the tr uth that w e w er e designed for com m unity, both w ith God and w ith each other as w e bolster ?s our ow n faith. W hen w e sing God?s pr aise together , w e join w ith the tune of all heaven and ear th! That is cool.
But som e m ay say, w hat if I can't sing? Ther e is good new s for you!
So, let us not sing for singing sake ? or keep quiet because w e don?t love singing. Let us sing because w e love the One w ho m ade us and for m ed us and enabled you to sing!

Together , as a com m unity in Chr ist, our youth gr ow in their faith, their fr iendships, and jour ney together in discover ing God?s pur pose for each of their lives. In our youth gr oup fam ily, ever yone has value and m atter s? no m atter w hat. W hy i t m at t er s | A 20-year study w as conducted and it w as discover ed that to m axim ize happiness, don?t buy things, buy exper iences. Exper iences actually becom e a par t of w ho w e ar e, and m em or ies alw ays stay w ith us. M y hope is that the exper iences our youth shar e together w ill dr aw them into a deeper r elationship w ith Jesus, and w ith each other. Accor ding to Th e Bar n a Gr ou p, only 6% of adult Chr istians m ade their decision to follow God over the age of 18. That m eans 94% of Chr istians m ade their decision to follow Jesus, under the age of 18! It is im per ative to offer exper iences to our youth that w ill im pact their faith thr oughout their entir e lives befor e they leave hom e. If w e can help to captur e the hear ts and m inds of our youth the hope is that they w ill becom e lifelong follow er s of Jesus that love one another and ser ve other s, and live a life of hope in a w or ld that is br oken.
Join us September 9th a s we kick off a new yea r together ! Sunday School * All w ill gather together on Septem ber 9th in the youth r oom for a tim e of fellow ship. Sunday School classes w ill officially begin on Septem ber 16th. We ar e tr ying som ething new this year - our classes w ill be divided by age and gender. I am so excited to see w hat happens in the lives of our youth as gr oup dynam ics shift fr om ever yone being together , to being w ith their im m ediate peer gr oup. M y hope is that together w e w ould have honest, tr anspar ent, gr eat conver sations about faith, life questions, our doubts and fear s. M iddle School Boys will meet in the Yellow Room. High School Boys will meet in the Nippa Room. M iddle School Girls will meet in the back side of the Youth Room. High School Girls will meet in the front of the Youth Room. The Childr en?s M inistr y has had an am azing sum m er teaching childr en all about Jesus! Spor ts Cam p opened the sum m er w ith a sm all but m ighty cr ew of our young disciples lear ning how to use their bodies to honor and ser ve God. VBS closed the sum m er w ith a giant cr ew of childr en w ho lear ned that Jesus w ill alw ays be ther e to r escue us! Both events w er e aw esom e! If you w er e lucky and br ave enough to ser ve w ith us, thank you. W hen w e choose, as par ents or guar dians, to br ing our childr en to chur ch, w e ar e investing in them as siblings in Chr ist w ho w ill ser ve Jesus w ith us. It is our hope that the pr ogr am s w e offer her e at New Hope w ill be building blocks to the str ong faith foundation our childr en w ill need to face the w or ld successfully and joyfully w ith Jesus. That being said, all of the pr ogr am s w e have in New Hope?s Childr en?s M inistr y r equir e num er ous people, both adults and youth, to r un safely and effectively. VBS alone utilized over 100 (of the best ever ) volunteer s. That?s a ver y big num ber. Have you felt the joy of ser ving in the Childr en?s M inistr y lately? W hen I stood in the sanctuar y of New Hope w ith over 200 childr en and 100 adults, pr aising Jesus?nam e in song, my hear t w as so full. Joy w as abundant! M y pr ayer is that m or e of you get to exper ience that feeling in ser ving the Lor d. New VBS in July

In our Childr en?s M inistr y pr ogr am s, w e have hundr eds of w ays for you to shar e your God-given talents and gifts. As I r eflect on the past tw o year s that I?ve had the honor to ser ve as your Childr en?s M inistr y Team Leader , I?m joyful and hopeful in gr eat things to com e, but that tr uly counts on each and ever y m em ber of New Hope Chur ch. Our Childr en?s M inistr y is a function of how w e as a chur ch com e together as a w hole to r aise up our younger br other s and sister s in Chr ist. M y hope for this next year , is that the m ajor ity of the Childr en?s M inistr y?s tim e can be focused on cr eating and engaging in pow er ful lear ning exper iences for our childr en to know and love Jesus, and that m or e of you find the joy in ser ving w ith the Childr en?s M inistr y of New Hope. I r ecently had an oppor tunity to attend the local Chur chsafe Secur ity Confer ence 2018 hosted by Capital City Chur ch in Colum bus. The tim ing of the confer ence w as per fect as w e have m ade it a pr ior ity to consider var ious aspects of safety and secur ity per taining to New Hope Chur ch. Our effor ts ar e not lim ited to the facility and gr ounds, as w e have also incr eased secur ity in our technology and financial m anagem ent system s. You w ill note that expenses for the m onth of July w er e a bit high (appr oxim ately 5% over budget), lar gely due to HVAC r epair s and technology suppor t ser vices. How ever , year -to-date expenses r em ain slightly below budget. Upcom ing expenditur es this year w ill include paym ent for r epair s to the r oof and siding, gr ounds m aintenance and additional chur ch inter ior updates.
