......................... New Hope's Mission To Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist, and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist.

A few w eeks ago I r eceived an invitation to attend my sem inar y class?40th r eunion. After r ecover ing fr om the initial shock that indeed it has been 40 year s since 1978, I r ealized that I w ould not be able to attend. I did, how ever , take the oppor tunity (as r equested) to w r ite a letter to my classm ates chr onicling the last four decades of life and m inistr y. That has given m e pause to r em inisce about w hat a differ ent chur ch and w or ld it is today than w hen I gr aduated fr om sem inar y and enter ed into m inistr y. I?ll highlight som e of the changes I?ve exper ienced and let you deter m ine w hether they?r e helpful or unhelpful. Per haps the m ost noticeable change is that, w hen I began in m inistr y, w om en w er e not able to be or dained as M inister s of Wor d and Sacr am ent in the Refor m ed Chur ch in Am er ica. Ther e w er e thr ee w om en in my gr aduating class, none of w hom w er e able to ser ve as pastor s upon gr aduation. Today ther e ar e a num ber of w om en in the M aster of Divinity pr ogr am at Wester n Sem inar y, ther e ar e a num ber of w om en w ho ar e or dained m inister s in our denom ination, and New Hope?s associate pastor is a w om an w hile our daughter -in-law also is a M inister of Wor d and Sacr am ent. The change in technology w ithin the life and m inistr y of the chur ch has been nothing shor t of astounding. For ty year s ago I typed paper s, ar ticles and ser m ons

on an electr ic typew r iter. I thought the IBM Selectr ic w as am azing. Cor r espondence w as all har d copy w ith onion skin car bon copies for docum entation. If m ultiple copies of a docum ent, w or ship bulletin, etc. w er e pr oduced, they w er e duplicated on a m im eogr aph m achine. Woe to the per son w ho m ade an er r or on the stencil! The only com puter I had seen at that point in life took up the entir e basem ent of a building on the cam pus of Hope College. Ther e w as no such thing as voice m ail or em ail. Today, my iPhone has m or e m em or y than the one com puter on Hope?s cam pus and I?d be lost w ithout my iM ac, M acbook Pr o and iPad. W hen I began in m inistr y, the chur ch faced little or no com petition for tim e on Sunday m or ning and, in m any places, on Sunday and Wednesday evenings also. Regular attendance in w or ship m eant at least ever y Sunday m or ning and for m any fam ilies, included Sunday evening. Today, the m ost com m on patter n of w or ship attendance at New Hope Chur ch is once ever y six w eeks. For ty year s ago the chur ch and cler gy w er e gener ally still held in high r espect. It w as im por tant to have the endor sem ent of the local cler gy association (w hich has gone the w ay of the dinosaur ) and cler gy w er e fr equently invited to ser ve on com m unity boar ds, foundations and other bodies. Today, cler gy ar e accor ded the

sam e level of r espect and esteem as used car salesper sons. W hen I began in m inistr y w e in the Refor m ed Chur ch in Am er ica w er e capable of disagr eeing w ithout being disagr eeable. We m ost assur edly did not agr ee about ever ything. How ever , w e w er e able to r espect each other as Chr istian sister s and br other s, talk thr ough our disagr eem ents and focus on that w hich united r ather than divided us. Today, as w ith m any denom inations, w e ar e m or e polar ized than ever. We r efuse to listen to those w ith w hom w e disagr ee, w e ar e quick to attach labels

and to question their spir itual com m itm ent and w e?r e uncer tain about their theological or thodoxy. Ther e ar e m any in our denom ination w ho have r esolved that, if they do not get ?their w ay,? ther e w ill be a quick exit. Lastly, for ty year s ago I w as convinced that, after thr ee year s in sem inar y, I had m ost if not all of the answ er s. Life has a w ay of calling into question tr aditionally held beliefs, challenging cher ished notions and pr esuppositions and disr upting long-held assum ptions. Now I can only dr eam about how sm ar t I w as and w ish that all my answ er s w er e unassailable!

SPRINGCLEANING Su san Ei sel st ei n , Ch u r ch Adm i n i st r at or eiselstein@NewHopeWor ship.com - 614.766.5445 x 16

Spr ing is officially her e and w e ar e excited to shar e w ith you sever al things happening at New Hope. Fir st, I am ver y happy to announce our new est staff m em ber , Seth Spr ang, w ho joined us on M ar ch 1st as our Sound Engineer /Tech Coor dinator. We ar e so happy to have Seth on boar d and he has alr eady had a positive im pact w ith our M usic M inistr y. I?d like to br iefly highlight the status on a few item s that w er e m entioned last m onth. One is in r egar d to the r eview of our financial policies and pr ocedur es by a local CPA. This r epor t is now in the dr aft stage and w ill soon be com plete. We anticipate som e changes as a r esult of the

for thcom ing r ecom m endations as w e tighten up som e past pr actices. Change is not alw ays easy but som etim es necessar y to m inim ize r isk and ensur e w e ar e being the best stew ar ds that w e can be.

w e r ecently had all of the pew s steam cleaned (w hich had not been done since the chur ch w as built). Thank you in advance for lim iting or exer cising car e w ith r egar d to dr inks in the sanctuar y!

Next, I?d like to shar e just a couple of com m ents r egar ding the Febr uar y financial r epor t below. Please note that for the m onth, tithes and offer ings w er e $11,913 over budget. Expenses w er e $283 over budget, specifically due to the unanticipated pur chase of a new fr eezer for the kitchen, and final paym ent of the phase 2 par king lot LED lighting pr oject.

Finally, I w ould like to r em ind ever yone that if you have any questions for m e or for any of our staff, please do not hesitate to contact m e via em ail or phone.

In addition to these facility updates,

Once again, thank you for your faithful giving to God?s w or k her e at New Hope. It is exciting to see w hat the Lor d is doing and to hear so m uch enthusiasm expr essed in the visions for our var ious m inistr ies and oppor tunities available her e.

YOUTHMINISTRY Li n dsey Al l en , Di r ect or of You t h M i n i st r y a llen@NewHopeWor ship.com - 614.766.5445 x20 - NewHopeWor ship.com/Youth

Dear fr iends of New Hope, In the last sever al w eeks our com m unity has been r eeling over the loss of tw o beloved students w ithin the Olentangy com m unity. M any of our childr en ar e w r estling w ith the r ealities of school violence against one another , violence against oneself, m ental illness, social pr essur es, and bullying. M y hear t aches for our youth in this gener ation. How ever , I am filled w ith hope because of the youth that w ant to m ake a positive im pact in our com m unity and in the w or ld. After the tr agic loss of these tw o teens, New Hope has becom e an epicenter for hope and healing w ithin the Pow ell com m unity. People w ho w ould not or dinar ily com e to a chur ch, have gather ed w ithin our w alls w or king together in attem pt to deter m ine and under stand the gr eatest pr oblem s facing our childr en today, and vigilantly w or k tow ar d solutions. I am thankful that people ar e being intr oduced to New Hope in their tim e of need. M y deepest gr atitude how ever , is that a gr oup of m iddle and high school students (som e affiliated w ith New Hope and other s not) have begun to m eet w eekly w ith m e and a few fellow par ents fr om our Chur ch to br ainstor m ideas on how to: r eaching the childr en w ho seem over w helm ed w ith life's str uggles, w ho or ar e alone, to love the child that other s disr egar d, to discover and im plem ent w ays to help our teens navigate a w or ld that is unfam iliar to us as adults, to br idge the gap betw een educator s, par ents, and teens, and to give them a voice to those w ho feel unhear d. It has been an incr edibly pow er ful jour ney and I am excited to see how God w ill use this tim e w ith New Hope as the safe gather ing place for people gr ieving w ithin our com m unity. Our youth ar e just - w ow ! They ar e w or ld changer s w ith their com passion, em pathy, and vision for change. I feel com pelled to w r ite this because so m uch of the new s w e see today r egar ding our teens is devastating and that ther e is not m uch hope. As som eone on the fr ont lines of w or king w ith teenager s I m ust tell you:

there is hope! Not only do w e ser ve an incr edible God that paves the w ay for r econciliation betw een all people, but w e have kids that desper ately desir e change and ar e w illing to m ake the difficult fir st steps to br ing it. They serve other s people in their schools and in their com m unity, and I w ould be r e-m issed if I didn?t highlight w hat our youth do for our chur ch and congr egation as w ell. Unless you ser ve beside them , you m ay not r ecognize the enor m ous im pact our youth ar e m aking as the r egular ly ser ve this congr egation. If you w alk the halls on Sunday m or nings and look into the nur ser y or Sunday School r oom s you w ill see youth volunteer s shepher ding the youngest childr en in our congr egation. They ar e tr ibe leader s for Kids WOW , coaches for Spor ts Cam p, Team Leader s dur ing VBS, m anaging gam es at events, cooking, painting faces at the Eater Egg Hunt, etc. Ever y w eek m any of our youth ser ve us thr ough their gift of w or ship in the choir or pr aise band. M any of them help on our tech team on Sundays and at events thr oughout the year. Our youth m ay use their gifts to be an usher w hile som e clean and pr ep coffee m ugs betw een ser vices so w e can gather and build r elationships over a hot (clean) cup of coffee, w hile other s offer their tim e to ser ve w ith our M issional Engagem ent outr each oppor tunities. Have hope. Our youth ar e engaged, invested, and ser ving our chur ch and our com m unity. Ser vice m atter s to them and they do it joyfully each w eek . I am thankful to each of them and the tim e they invest in their chur ch hom e. Ther e ar e so m any things com peting for their tim e and attention, yet they continue to m ake ser vice at New Hope a pr ior ity. Although our hour s this year have not yet been tabulated, last year our youth ser ved a com bined 833.95 hour s! Our w or ld is br oken, ther e is no denying that. How ever , our youth at New Hope ar e stepping up and stepping in w her e ther e is a need, w her e people ar e hur ting, and w her e they can ser ve other s w ell using the gifts God has given them . Have hope!
