W hat a glor ious Easter w e exper ienced at New Hope Chur ch! Fr om the Easter Sunr ise Ser vice in the Afr ica Event Center at the Colum bus Zoo to both w or ship ser vices at New Hope, it w as a spectacular Resur r ection Day. Luke's tr ansition fr om Easter to Ascension Day and Pentecost, the beginning of the Chr istian chur ch, fr om the gospel that bear s his nam e to the Acts of the Apostles (or m or e appr opr iately the Acts of the Holy Spir it) is a fascinating r ead. Am ong the m any qualities that char acter ized the ear ly Chr istian chur ch, tw o that alw ays im pr ess m e ar e a com m itm ent to intentional gr ow th and gener osity. Luke indicates that the Lor d added daily to the num ber w ho w er e being saved. He also m akes the point that these ear ly follow er s of Jesus w er e entir ely gener ous (w ith the exception of Ananias and Sapphir a and ther e w er e per ilous consequences - r ead Act s 5). New Hope is com m itted to intentional gr ow th. That com m itm ent m ust be under gir ded by gener ous stew ar dship. That's w hy I'm w r iting w ith deep concer n. W hile New Hope's stew ar dship w as exceptionally gener ous last year , w e ar e cur r ently facing a ver y financially challenging situation. We ar e now at the point of using cash r eser ves in or der to m eet our financial obligations. It is ver y tr ue that ther e is a cycle to our r evenue at New Hope Chur ch. Yet, in or der to offer the m inistr ies that enhance your and your fam ily's spir itual gr ow th, w e incur expenses on a consistent schedule.

W hy sh ou l d a Ch r i st i an be f i n an ci al l y gen er ou s? Fir st, Chr istian gener osity is r ooted in an under standing that all w e ar e and have belongs to God, the Cr eator (Psal m 24:1). God is the ow ner and w e ar e m anager s, com m issioned to follow God?s guidelines for living. As ow ner , God has m ade clear that faithful m anager s should be gener ous. Secondly, w e ar e gr ateful for God?s unconditional love and for giveness expr essed thr ough Chr ist?s sacr ificial death (1 Cor i n t h i an s 6:20). Our gr atitude is expr essed thr ough our faithful obedience to God?s design for living, w hich pr escr ibes a gener ous hear t and pocketbook . We give our tithe and tim e not in or der to gain favor w ith God, but out of gr atitude for the gift of our salvation in Jesus Chr ist, so that in our w hole life w e m ay show our selves gr ateful to God for His m any blessings.

W hy sh ou l d a Ch r i st i an be f i n an ci al l y gen er ou s? (con t i n u ed) In the Bible, gener osity is linked to: -
Gr ow ing Spir itually (M at t h ew 6:19-24) Our Need to Give (2 Cor i n t h i an s 9:7) Wor shiping God (Ex odu s 35:4-5) The Need of Our Neighbor (M at t h ew 25:31-40) Our Resulting Sanctification (2 Cor i n t h i an s 9:11-12)
W hy di d Jesu s l i n k ou r spi r i t u al l i ves so cl osel y t o f i n an ci al m at t er s? Thr oughout the Bible, idolatr y and gr eed ar e consistently por tr ayed as contr ar y to God?s pur poses. Because the love of m oney is centr al to both behavior s, Jesus spoke r egular ly of the r elationship betw een our pocketbooks and the spir itual vitality of our hear ts. In our pr esent-day cultur e, the issue of finances r em ains a key to our spir itual lives. M any individuals, fam ilies, or ganizations, and businesses exper ience ser ious financial pr oblem s caused by idolatr y and gr eed.
Accor di n g t o t h e Bi bl e, h ow am I t o gi ve? The Bible suggests that our gener osity be: -
Regular (1 Cor i n t h i an s 6:20) Pr opor tional (2 Cor i n t h i an s 8:12) Sacr ificial (M ar k 12:43-44) Cheer ful (2 Cor i n t h i an s 9:7)
How m u ch sh ou l d I gi ve? The teaching of the New Testam ent encour ages giving in pr opor tion to the m ater ial blessings one has r eceived, w ith special attention and com m endation for sacr ificial giving. At New Hope Chur ch, w e r ecognize the tithe (10%) as the biblical m odel for giving. Additionally, in r esponse to Chr ist?s abundant giving to us, w e should incr easingly seek to subm it our per sonal r esour ces to Him , displaying a spir it of gener osity and cheer fulness (M at t h ew 6:19-21 an d 33; M at t h ew 23:23; Lu k e 6:38; Lu k e 21:1-4; M al ach i 3:8-10; 2 Cor i n t h i an s 8 an d 9; Pr over bs 3:9-10).
W h er e sh ou l d I gi ve m y t i t h e? At New Hope Chur ch, w e believe that a Chr istian?s pr im ar y giving is to be dir ected to the local chur ch. In both the Old and New Testam ents, offer ings w er e r egular ly collected to m aintain the ongoing w or k of God in the w or ld. Today, this m eans giving to the chur ch w hich Chr ist established.
W h er e do I l ear n m or e abou t Ch r i st i an st ew ar dsh i p? We encour age per sonal r eading and study of the m any biblical teachings about stew ar dship. We encour age chur ch m em ber s to shar e their ow n stew ar dship stor ies, par ticular ly w ith r egar d to how they have gr ow n in their life of stew ar dship. Resour ces ar e also available in the chur ch libr ar y.
Ar e m em ber s ex pect ed t o m ak e a f i n an ci al com m i t m en t ? M ost assur edly! We believe in unanim ous giving, fr om the youngest child to the oldest adult. In fact, w e w ant to challenge each per son w ho consider s New Hope to be ?their ? chur ch to gr ow tow ar d the biblical m odel of tithing (10%) by one per cent of incom e each year. For exam ple, if you ar e cur r ently giving 2% of your incom e to the chur ch, w e challenge you to consider incr easing your giving to 3%. We encour age you to take the next step of faith and live as Chr ist pr escr ibes. Sixteen of Jesus?thir ty-eight par ables r efer to our r elationship w ith our m oney, r ecognizing that our stew ar dship is a bar om eter of our spir itual condition. At New Hope w e believe that faithful stew ar dship pr om otes spir itual gr ow th, not because the chur ch needs to r eceive, but because each of us has a need to give, as Jesus consistently taught.
