Every book has its own birth story. The “Thin Red Line” series was born out of my home church’s desire to understand fully how all the pieces of the Bible come together to paint one breathtaking picture of redemption. I can tell you that through my personal experience of journeying this thin red line, my walk with Christ has been taken to a new level because of my strengthened understanding of what God did to save my soul, and I adore Him all the more. I am excited about what God is going to do in your life and in your church because of this journey you are about to take through redemption’s story.

I’ve tried to go back to the very beginning and retrace the steps of how this book series came into being. I can’t remember if it first happened in my office, or my pastor’s office; perhaps it was in the executive pastor’s office . . . But I remember discussions about the life-changing power of the Word of God. I recall that our hearts were beating rapidly and our voices were escalating with excitement as we began to dream about what could happen if each person in our church began studying together, digging for ourselves to catch the “big picture” of Scripture. We started envisioning the spiritual growth and Bible literacy that God would bring to our people if we started in Genesis and marched through Scripture to thread together the evidence of God’s plan from the very beginning — that God would send a Savior to save sin-wrecked humanity.

This church-wide emphasis coupled with the writing process required many people working together for a common purpose to make the “Thin Red Line” series a reality. Our church body embraced this 52-week journey as we studied together. Our weekly Bible study

groups studied one lesson per week. Our pastor delivered sermons to reinforce and more fully develop where we were in the timeline as we studied redemption’s history together. This was no isolated program; this was the theme of our church for an entire year, and we were blown away with how God transformed us through the power of His Word.

What are the Bible stories you remember from childhood? We all have our favorites. Noah’s ark. Moses and the bulrushes, Moses and the burning bush, and Moses parting the Red Sea. David and Goliath. Abraham and Isaac. But which story comes first? What is the chronological order? And who was it that fought the battle of Jericho? Where do the judges fit into the Old Testament? When did the prophets come into the picture, and how do they fit into the rest of the Old Testament? When did Israel become a nation, and why is that even important? And can anyone give a clear explanation of how the Old Testament is linked to the New Testament?

If you are one of the blessed individuals who has had exposure to the Bible for much of your life, you could probably sit down with a blank sheet of paper and write down a long list of Bible stories you’ve studied in your lifetime. You may even be able to jot down a moral or biblical truth to correlate with each story. But so often our Bible study approach can be piecemeal and disjointed, jumping from one text to the next, that we find ourselves possessing an enormous pile of exquisite threads, appreciating each one for its individual beauty, yet unable to weave them together to see the intricate tapestry that is God’s big picture.

The “Thin Red Line” series is an opportunity to start at the beginning in the Garden of Eden and walk chronologically through the Bible, tracing the link of commonality found in every book of the Bible: redemption. From beginning to end, God’s Word points us to the Cross. The evidence is striking. The benefits reaped from the “Thin Red Line” series are many:

You’ll be overwhelmed by God’s intentionality. Looking at Scripture passages with one particular focus, God’s plan of redemption, will show how He has painstakingly dropped evidence like breadcrumbs through time, leading to the Cross. In fact, throughout this study you’ll find that sometimes God left breadcrumbs, but more often He provided large arrows with neon lights pointing people to the promised Savior, His Son, Jesus Christ.

You’ll be overwhelmed by God’s love. As you study God’s master plan and the many ways God interacted with people to usher in their salvation, you cannot help but understand more deeply that humanity is completely undeserving of God’s grace. From the beginning God has been consistent, and He has been faithful; you’ll see in this study that from the beginning humans are consistently inconsistent and tend toward unfaithfulness. Why did God follow through with the plan? Why did God keep His promise by sending His own Son into this fallen world? It must be love.

You’ll grow in Bible literacy. For those who traverse all 52 weeks, you will find a deeper understanding of how the different books of the Bible fit together and how the stories flow chronologically.

I confess to you that as the writer, my Bible knowledge grew leaps and bounds as I sat down to march purposefully through time in studying redemption. The growth I experienced has made me a more passionate teacher of God’s Word. Whether I’m teaching my children at home around the kitchen table or sharing God’s Word in a more formal setting, I long for God’s people to possess a working knowledge of the Bible. The “Thin Red Line” series provides a framework for understanding the overall history of Scripture.

You’ll fall in love with the Old Testament. It’s just a theory, but I believe that many Christians shy away from reading the Old Testament because they don’t know the history, they can’t figure out the relevance of some of the stories, and they don’t see how its

contents can deepen their walk with Christ. Prepare to be amazed!

You’ll fall in love with the Old Testament when you begin to hear its pages whispering the name of Jesus.

You’ll fall in love with the New Testament. Follow the “Thin Red Line” series from beginning to end. Your heart is going to sing “glory hallelujah!” when you arrive at the manger, having gained a deeper appreciation for the Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes.

There is power and absolute authority in every word that proceeds from the mouth of Almighty God. The very words of God fill the pages of Scripture. 1. Who are the characters in this story?

Jesus, the disciples, Pharisees, and scribes.

2. The Pharisees and scribes asked Jesus why His disciples didn’t walk according to the tradition of the elders, but their question to Jesus was really an accusation. What was the accusation the Jewish leaders were making?

Their question was their way of accusing the disciples of not being true in their religion and accusing Jesus of not being a law-honoring teacher.

3. The Jewish leaders were rules-focused instead of God-focused, and they found fault with the disciples. How did their legalism (an overemphasis on rules) lead to faultfinding?

They didn’t consider the heart of the disciples, as God looks on the heart.

What they saw were men who didn’t exercise religion the way they felt it should be exercised, and they immediately faulted the men for doing things differently.

to God’s Word. Straying from God’s Word is a sin, but straying from religious traditions is not a sin, especially when the tradition, such as the washing of hands in this passage, was not a biblical mandate.

4. According to vv. 3–4, where did these traditions of the Pharisees come from?

Note that though traditions were dear to their hearts, probably passed down from parents and elders they loved and respected, these traditions were not from God. These traditions were manmade. The elders may have had good intentions in designing some of them, but they hindered true worship. Jesus made clear His disdain for their strict following of traditions but lack of respect for God’s implicit laws.

5. What were the Jewish leaders conveying about personal holiness and the forgiveness of sins by insisting that people follow these traditions of washing hands and cleansing pots?

Refer your small group to the record of this story in Matthew 15:1– 20. In vv. 10–11 and 16–20, Jesus taught the disciples that sin is a heart condition, and that superficial acts of cleansing cannot wash away sin. The Jews practiced ceremonial washing.

Do people today still believe that some ceremonies can make you right before God? 6. Jesus said the Pharisees had set aside God’s commandment in order to follow their traditions (Mark 7:6). He gave a clear example of this in vv. 10–12, denouncing the immoral outcome of declaring corban. This was a practice of the Jews; declaring that they were giving their possessions to God. In their minds this removed their obligation to use their financial resources to care for their aging parents (in a time when family was often the only support of the elderly). Thus, their elderly parents were neglected, and the money they had given “to God” was

filtered through the synagogue and into the pockets of religious leaders. Can you think of a modern example of how following religious traditions can cause a person to set aside God’s commandments?

One possible answer is the command to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves, named in Luke 10:25–28.

For some churches, love for a tradition can become more important than loving a sinner when keeping a tradition causes a sinner to be confused or turned away by the church.

7. What was Jesus’ assessment of the religious leaders? How did He respond to their question?

As Jesus answered their question, He turned the conversation into an accusation and assessment, not of the disciples, but of the Pharisees. He called them hypocrites, accusing them of being the fulfillment of Isaiah’s words in Isaiah 29:13. Jesus said their hearts were far from God, their worship was of no value, and their teaching was not based on God’s Word but on man’s rules. Jesus made it clear that we cannot be fully relying on God’s Word and rule-makers at the same time. When God’s people begin making our own religious rules, we set aside the authority of God’s Word and set ourselves up as the ultimate authority.

2. Through the years, what traditions or “fences� have you experienced, either growing up as a child or traditions that you practice today?

Do you have any personal guidelines that you feel strongly about, in the manner in which people should obey God’s Law?

Allow everyone to share.One example of a fence could involve someone who has been raised in a home with alcoholism or has been personally addicted in the past. That person refuses to eat in a restaurant where alcohol is served, whereas for other believers that restaurant would present no problem.

What acts as an effective fence for one should not be extended to become a rule for all.

3. What role does tradition play in this story? Why do Christians sometimes hold on to traditions so strongly in the life of a church?

Have your group discuss how traditions are often habits we’ve grown to love, habits that make us comfortable.

Traditions are handed down from people we love and respect and were first developed at a time when they met a need. We may struggle when a tradition is

no longer relevant. For instance, a family’s way of worshipping at Christmas can become a beautiful tradition, but the tradition will likely change in time because children grow into adulthood, move out of the home, and begin their own traditions.

4. When does tradition bring value to the church? When is it a hindrance? How do you discern the difference? What does Colossians 2:8 teach us about the potential danger of tradition? What did Jesus say in Mark 7:7 about how “the doctrines of men” can affect the way God receives our worship?

Colossians 2:8 teaches that the traditions of men may cheat us from walking according to Christ’s teachings. Mark 7:7 teaches that our worship is in vain and not received by God when we are teaching the doctrines of men.

We receive forgiveness of our sins and are declared righteous by accepting Christ as our Lord and Savior. Help your small group to place emphasis on salvation first, and then a respect for and dependence upon God’s Word. Take time to carefully examine 2 Timothy 3:16–17, and discuss how important it is that God’s Word is the priority and guide in how we worship as well as for our daily living. 1. The Pharisees preferred that the disciples “walk according to the tradition of the elders” (v. 5), but Galatians 5:25 teaches a better way.

Paul writes, “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”

What does it mean to walk by the Spirit? How do you personally use the Word of God to guide you to walk by the Spirit?

Context: Beginning with the Beatitudes in Matthew 5, Matthew gives many teachings of Christ. The entire sermon is directed to Christian disciples and our life in God’s kingdom. Matthew 5 focuses on values for daily living, and Matthew 6 and 7 narrow our focus on the true pathway of life in God’s kingdom.

Matthew 7:13–23 are strong words on salvation. Jesus taught about the narrow way to salvation, then vv. 15–23 teach directly on the necessity of an authentic relationship with Christ; Jesus warns

about false prophets, “You will know them by their fruits” (v. 16), and then warns, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter” (v. 21). As Jesus then begins the story of the wise man who built his house on the rock and the foolish man who built upon sand, note His first word: “therefore” (v. 24). Jesus is connecting His teachings on salvation and an authentic walk with Christ with this story of two builders, that we might understand the importance of obedience to God’s Word.
