ANNUAL REPORT 2023

EMERGING LEADERS COUNCIL

2023 Now More Than Ever As New Heights completes year two in our new Brooklyn home, we have much to celebrate. During the past 12 months, we have been on a non-stop journey of growth – adding value to our extended community of student-athletes and their families in more ways than ever before.

Through partnerships with dozens of local organizations, schools, elected officials and other corporate and community groups, we have increased access to resources that young people need to thrive academically, socially, emotionally and physically. We have expanded our College Bound program and continued to demonstrate strong outcomes for our student-athletes in educational attainment and career development. We are proud to report that all 31 members of the Class of 2023 – one of our largest classes to date – graduated on time this past spring and matriculated to higher education. Our graduates are now attending notable colleges and universities including Fordham, George Washington, Smith and Vanderbilt. New Heights has also introduced new community-based services – basketball clinics, educational workshops, summer day camps, health and wellness fairs, and cultural events – that are reaching hundreds of additional youth and families who come from Crown Heights and other historically under-resourced neighborhoods in Brooklyn. In total, our network of after-school, weekend and summer initiatives now touches more than 1,500 young people annually – five times the number we have served in previous years. These achievements are no small feat, and none would have been possible without the steadfast support of our New Heights family. Your commitment brings the young people in our programs closer to their college and career goals; creating opportunities for them to achieve full potential on the basketball court, in the classroom and in all areas of their lives. On their behalf, and on behalf of the New Heights Board of Directors and staff, we thank you for your continued interest in our work and incredible ongoing generosity. In appreciation,

Ted Smith Executive Director

Mark Patricof Board Chair

Our Approach

New Heights is a sports-based youth development organization that creates opportunities for young people from marginalized communities to come together and rise to their potential. Our strategy is to engage them in an activity that they love – basketball – and in the process, introduce them to a world of new ideas and experiences that broaden their understanding of life and what they can accomplish. We use intentionality to combine our basketball programming with services that support college and career readiness, social emotional learning, and physical and mental health. Through this lens, we design and deliver a variety of after-school, weekend and summer programs that reach more than 1,500 young people annually.

College Bound

Our signature program, College Bound, uses basketball to engage young people in a comprehensive network of academic, social emotional learning and college preparatory services. In 2023, the program enrolled 356 student-athletes and fielded 25 teams that competed locally and regionally, and in some cases, nationally. Our program model is based on long-term investments in youth, often beginning in upper elementary or middle school and continuing through college and beyond. Each of the following age-targeted initiatives work together as a continuum of services to help student-athletes make it to and through high school and college.

High School Assist supports 4th-8th graders as they prepare for

the transition from middle to high school. Services include afterschool classroom sessions focused on academic skills development and social emotional learning, one-on-one and small group tutoring, test prep, high school application guidance, high school visits, financial aid advisement and individualized counseling.

Since 2005

Summer Academy is a 5-week program that provides middle school

youth with basketball training and educational enrichment activities during the summer. The 2023 Summer Academy included four weeks of day camp sessions hosted on-site at our headquarters in Brooklyn, followed by an additional sleepaway week outside the city for rising 7th-9th graders on the campus of St. Andrew’s School, a boarding school located in Rhode Island.

College Assist provides our high school student-athletes with the

individual support necessary to gain admission to competitive colleges and universities, as well as group workshops that equip them with the hard and soft skills necessary to thrive in college and beyond. Services include SAT/ACT prep, oneon-one and small group tutoring for students who are struggling in specific subjects, financial aid and college application support, campus visits, life skills development and NCAA recruiting and eligibility guidance.

Career Assist provides ongoing support to College Bound alumni who

matriculate to college in order to ensure that they graduate on time and are career ready. Services include college course and major selection, resume building, interview skills workshops, professional networking opportunities, internship assistance and career exposure.

Alumni Spotlights RAMA SY New Heights Class of 2018, SUNY Oswego Class of 2021

Rama Sy is a wonderful example of alumni achievement. Originally from Senegal in West Africa, Rama came to the United States when she was in the ninth grade and became involved with the New Heights College Bound program shortly thereafter. During her time with New Heights, she flourished on and off the basketball court. In 2018, she graduated from high school and matriculated to SUNY Oswego. She was the first in her family to attend college. At Oswego, Rama was a member of the basketball team, earning All-Conference and Conference Academic Honor Roll recognition. She was also named the 2019 winner of Launch It, the School of Business’s annual start-up competition. During this time, Rama continued to stay connected to New Heights by working as a Team Leader at the New Heights Summer Academy, serving as a peer counselor and mentor to middle school youth. In 2021, Rama graduated from college early with a degree in Business Administration. With support from New Heights, she earned a summer analyst internship in Private Equity at Morgan Stanley. This internship turned into a full-time role as an Investment Banking Analyst at the firm in 2022, where she is currently employed. New Heights is tremendously proud of Rama’s journey and we were thrilled to honor her with our Alumni GameChanger Award at our 7th annual GameChangers Ball in October. Her success is an inspiration and we look forward to seeing her continue to demonstrate leadership in her career and throughout her life.

NASIR MUHAMMAD New Heights Class of 2023, Northern Illinois University Class of 2027

Nasir Muhammad first joined the New Heights College Bound program in 2016 when he was in the fifth grade. From the start, he was determined to reach his goal of playing basketball at a high level. Whether participating in major tournaments, working on his skills during our Summer Academy, or taking care of his schoolwork before a big game, he tackled every obstacle in his way head on. His efforts paid off when he received the Outstanding Athlete Award for his contributions on and off the court at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, NY. Seeing Nas grow as a player and as a person has been wonderful. He is kind, compassionate, a great leader and a terrific teammate. He worked hard to get to where he is now, and we are happy to have supported him along the way. This past spring, Nas was one of our 31 high school seniors to commit to college, and recently began his first semester at Northern Illinois University where he received a full scholarship. His success is a testament to our academic and athletic programming, and New Heights could not be prouder of how far he’s come to make his dream a reality. We cannot wait to see Nas continue to be a champion on and off the court, and we will be behind him every step of the way. 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

Our Partnerships New Heights extends our deepest appreciation to the corporate and community organizations and elected officials who have helped us expand our educational and sports-based programs for youth and families.

Community Events

In February, New Heights hosted Brooklyn Body and Mind, a free event for the community that featured local vendors, Brooklyn-based organizations and elected officials. Participants of all ages joined in a variety of activities that support physical and mental health and well-being. That same month, in celebration of Black History Month, New Heights hosted Trailblazers, a panel discussion featuring noted cultural historian Dr. Anthony Browder, human rights icon and 1968 Olympic medalist Dr. John Carlos, and NYC Cultural Affairs Commissioner Laurie Cumbo (photo opposite). The free community event included remarks, a Q&A portion with speakers, and live performances from the Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy.

The Foundation

One of our most popular community programs, The Foundation is an ongoing series of 7-week basketball clinics during the school year targeted to underserved youth who live in Brooklyn. In addition to building introductory basketball skills, these clinics provide youth with classroom-based learning and life skills development (including financial literacy and career exposure). Last year, The Foundation served over 300 youth.

Corporate Partners

In 2023, New Heights was recognized by Bank of America’s prestigious Neighborhood Builders program for expanding opportunity and strengthening communities. In addition, New Heights partnered throughout the year with several companies including Apollo Global Management, Goldman Sachs, Meta, Morgan Stanley, Neuberger Berman and Seaport Global to design and deliver workshops on financial literacy, college and career readiness, and other important life skills.

MOCC Partners

In 2023, New Heights collaborated with several of our neighbors in the Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center to provide a multi-sport day camp and other programming across a range of areas, including the Carey Gabay Foundation (health and wellness), Digital Girl (coding), Globall (soccer), Ifateyo (dance), Imagine Swimming, Brooklyn Pride (cultural programming and advocacy) and the Boys Club of New York.

Our Events

In 2023, New Heights hosted our three signature special events that brought our community together to raise awareness and funds to support our programs and services.

7th Annual GameChangers Ball

On Thursday, October 26th, we transformed our three full-size basketball courts into an incredible ballroom and welcomed over 300 guests to the 7th annual GameChangers Ball. Through the amazing generosity of our friends and supporters, we raised over $1.5 million. We were thrilled to honor Mark Attanasio (Chairman & Principal Owner, Milwaukee Brewers and Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Crescent Capital Group), NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, Crystal Hudson (New York City Council Member) and Rama Sy (Investment Banking Analyst, Morgan Stanley and New Heights alum) for their life-changing and game-changing contributions to New Heights and student-athletes in New York City.

10th Annual Team Challenge

On Saturday, June 4th, the entire New Heights family gathered together on our basketball courts in Brooklyn for the 10th annual Team Challenge Shoot-a-Thon! The collective fundraising efforts of our studentathletes, coaches and volunteer “general managers”, and the over 2,000 friends and family members who showed their support through pledges and donations, proved that when we work as a team, everybody wins. New Heights is thrilled to report that we set a new record and raised over $225,000 for our programs.

MADNESS’23

Team spirit was on display this past March for MADNESS’23. On March 16th, over 300 guests joined us at The Ainsworth Chelsea for our annual March Madness NCAA viewing and cocktail party, while another hundred guests came together at the Canoe Brook Country Club in New Jersey for a MADNESS’23 party organized by New Heights Emerging Leaders Council members Steven Colombo and Brian Sateja. Additionally, we hosted the Boardroom 3v3 Challenge at our home with 10 companies in the entertainment, media and sports worlds battling it out to support our work. Special recognition to Board member Rich Kleiman for helping bring everyone together. We are excited to share that we raised over $200,000. Our thanks to everyone for their support!
