Newhaven and Peacehaven u3a

Young at heart residents of Newhaven are making increasing use of their local u3a. New Interest Groups for gardening, keep fit, craft work, walking and wine tasting have attracted a lot of interest joining more than 20 groups from art to ukulele via bridge and discussion.

In January, the monthly general meeting will be at The Hillcrest Centre (6th January at 10:30am) with guest speaker Chris Horlock on “Brighton in the 60s”. The next few monthly meetings are planned for the Meridian Centre at 2:15pm. The speakers are Richard Ratcliffe (3rd February) “Don’t Put Your Daughter on the Stage”; Joanna Wilkins (10th March) “Medieval Portraits - Reality or Political Spin”; April 7th The Dowager Lady Crabtree (7th April) “How To Grow Old Disgracefully”. At each meeting there are also notices about groups and activities, and they always conclude with a raffle and refreshments while members socialise. The u3a is happy to welcome anyone to these meetings who just wants to see what it’s like.

The Friday Lunch Bunch this January has its monthly meal at The Telscombe Tavern and in February at the Burger & Bird. The Theatre Group will be off to see Carmen in March and is taking bookings now for The Cher Show in November. Many members are also looking forward to their day outing to France for lunch at Le Chateau des Tourelles.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the u3a. Operating locally but with support from a national organisation, the charity has at its heart a self-help ethos where members share expertise and enthusiasms. Costs are kept to a minimum with a subscription fee of just £15 a year.

The u3a is for those no longer in full-time work or raising a family. It gives members the opportunity to meet new people and enjoy a wide variety of interests.

Members are kept informed with monthly emailed updates and a printed Newsletter 3 times a year. You can also visit their Facebook page, website
