I’m a ?ag-waver, but not the hyper-patriotic kind. I’ve just always liked a ?ag waving outside my house for the color and energy it adds, along with a feeling about my home and country that I can’t quite explain. Some of this surely has to do with coming from a family of geography bu=s who like to look at globes, memorize capitals, and generally act like armchair tourists.

Maybe this explains why I got such a charge out of the reaction that our international students had to their national ?ags. Fabio Barbosa’s expression is typically reserved, but he broke into a wide and happy smile when he >rst saw the Cape Verde ?ag in my o;ce. Without prompting, he enthusiastically told me that its ten stars stand for his nation’s ten islands. (I learned that only nine are inhabited.)

A similar sequence took place when Ramon Vidri encountered his national bandera. Again with no prompting, he quickly pointed out that the mountains on El Salvador’s ?ag are volcanoes, and that his dad had once witnessed a volcano eruption. I now know that the small, red cap in the center represents freedom and liberty.

We shot the cover photo in the McEvoy Theater after the international students had eagerly grabbed their ?ags. Some were waved vigorously or held high, while others were carefully cradled.

There was something about this activity that produced energy, and a feeling, that I really liked. I hope that you’ll feel it too as you read about our international community.

NEW BOARD CHAIRMAN

q & a with the board chairman Peter W. Galletly ’73, a trustee since 1995, succeeded Jason M. Pilalas ’58 as chairman in October.

Galletly is a lifelong member of the NHS community, a successful business and family man, and someone who is serious about the concept of stewardship. These qualities combine to uniquely prepare him for board leadership.

Galletly is executive vice president of Tiedemann-Bevs Industries, an Indiana-based exporter/importer and manufacturer of wholesale piece goods and notions, and he serves on the boards of directors of Tiedemann-Bevs and of Inopak, Inc., of New Jersey.

The Galletly family constitutes one of NHS’s most distinguished legacies, but this only partially explains what motivates this thoughtful and talented man. He’s also keenly aware of and excited by the school’s progress and potential. hamptonia: What does it mean to become chairman at this time? pg: One of our biggest assets is a top-notch location, which of course won’t change. It’s really the people, though, who drive the mission. I have tremendous respect for the management skills of Head of School Andrew Menke and his team. There are challenges ahead but we have both a great place and people with fantastic leadership at the top.

The two chairmen who preceded me, Jason Pilalas and Bob Kennedy ’50, both did terri>c work and they continue to lead. So I’m building o= a strong foundation. It’s an excellent springboard for me to leave the woodpile a little higher than when I found it. hamptonia: Tell us more about the woodpile. pg: I ran the camping program at a summer camp when I was younger, leading hiking and canoeing trips for days and climbing the Adirondack high peaks. I taught kids that when we left a campsite we had to leave the woodpile higher than when we found it, because when we ran into inclement weather it was sure nice if someone else had left a campsite in good order with plenty of wood for us.

In terms of NHS, the “woodpile” is more >nancial strength — growing the endowment and maintaining the plant — and bringing a higher level of excellence to our academics and co-curriculars.

hamptonia: How do you plan to do this? pg: The template is our Strategic Plan, and my goals are wrapped around the plan. It’s a living document and we will prioritize as required. For instance, we’ve already developed a >ve-year strategic >nancial plan as an o=shoot of the Strategic Plan.

I’ll lead by making use of the board’s resources, particularly its great intelligence. I’m really awestruck by my fellow trustees’ dedication, professionalism, and wisdom. hamptonia: Your family has made many important contributions to the school. How does this impact your actions as chair? pg: NHS has always been very special to me. My dad, Robert C. Galletly, Sr., was Class of 1942 and his brother, my Uncle Don, was Class of 1941. My brother, Robert C. Galletly, Jr., was Class of 1971 and I graduated in 1973. Bob’s daughter, my niece Stacey, graduated in 2000, and my daughter, Leanne ’09, is the next generation.

Dad passed away in 2007. He was chairman in his day and a major contributor to NHS, and he instilled in me a passion to give back. Scholarship is very meaningful to me because it was to him.

My uncle was tragically killed in the Korean con?ict and never had a >nal resting place, which is why the Donald R. Galletly Scholarship Fund was founded, to honor him and to inspire others. hamptonia: What should we look for in your style of leadership? pg: I try to lead by example; I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and do the work. NHS is in a good position because we have a strong management team, an intelligent and responsive board, and a realistic mission and Strategic Plan. As chair I will tie all of that together and be a liaison to the school administration, and I will emphasize transparency in the communication ?ow. hamptonia: What are you looking forward to this year? pg: Of course my daughter’s graduation in May will be a personal high point, as will the completion of the Pilalas Center for Math and Science in the fall. I was a charter member of the board’s Buildings and Grounds Committee and I’ve been involved on the grassroots level — from where to locate the building and choosing the architect, through groundbreaking and construction.

Jason Pilalas gave the marching orders for the project, and I was happy to do my share of the marching! I’m eager to see the great impact the building will have on our campus.

international mindedness What does it mean to be “prepared” in today’s international world?

Even an optimist like me >nds today’s headlines sobering… fears of a global recession, Mumbai struggling with terrorism, and continued strife in Afghanistan and Iraq. Back home, the Dow behaves like a yo-yo, Detroit needs a bailout, and home foreclosures mount.

The historic inauguration of the >rst African American president is the backdrop for an overriding sense of “change.” Here at NHS we share the nation’s uncertainty about the economy but with optimism as well, due to increased applications and philanthropic support, coupled with an engaged student body and talented faculty. We are focused on e;cient operation and cost control and plan to emerge from the present storm healthier than ever.

The uncharted seas that lay before us have much to do with the growing interconnectedness and interdependence of a world that NHS students will inherit. Newsweek columnist Fareed Zakaria suggested in his book, The Post-American World, that “we are now living through the third great power shift of the modern era,” what he calls the “rise of the rest.” Zakaria pointed out that Antoine van Agtmael, the fund manager who coined the phrase “emerging markets,” identi>ed the twenty->ve next great multinationals: four companies each from Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Taiwan; three from India; two from China; and one each from Argentina, Chile, Malaysia, and South Africa.

The tallest building is now in Dubai. The richest man is Mexican, and the largest publicly traded corporation is Chinese. The biggest plane is built in Russia and Ukraine, India is building the largest re>nery, and the largest factories are Chinese. London is becoming the leading >nancial center and the United Arab Emirates has the richest investment fund.

As nations surge forward it is critical that we prepare students to be “compassionately competitive” global citizens. These competen4

cies must be built and balanced with a heightened sense of moral purpose and an unrelenting intellectual curiosity, so graduates are well prepared for college and their lives beyond.

Over the last year we have rea;rmed our commitment to a continuum of fundamental twenty->rst century skills. From writing, reading, and speaking to analysis, problem solving, and technology, we have mapped the progression of learner outcomes from ninth grade through graduation to ensure that students have the core pro>ciencies to allow dexterity with varied content.

We have added Chinese and World Cultures courses and are on track to o=er the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in 2010, and to begin exchanges next year with a school near Shanghai.

This fall we will open the Pilalas Center for Math and Science, a tangible demonstration of our commitment to these core twenty->rst century disciplines. In coming years we will explore exchange relationships with India and Latin America and will develop summer immersion opportunities around the globe.

We live in an interdisciplinary world and our curriculum must advance to prepare students for future demands. Students need to know more about interconnected, world issues including water; commerce; the Middle East; food production; alternative energy; technology, math, and science; and environmental pressures.

We must mirror the dynamism in the world today. I invite you to learn more about our international connections in this issue, and to stay tuned as we chart a new and exciting course!

new hampton school visits washington, dc Head of School Andrew Menke, Director of Admission Suzanne Buck, and Development Associate David Perfield traveled to our nation’s capital to meet and greet thirty->ve alumni, parents, and friends at the ever-popular Old Ebbitt Grille on Thursday, November 13. Against a backdrop of a large atrium, members of the New Hampton School community gathered to reminiscence and learn more about the Pilalas Center for Math and Science, as well as several other strategic objectives in progress. It was a fun and informative evening for all. Q brendan smith ’05 shines in the espn spotlight Brendan Smith ’05 had a notable year on the Northwestern University football team. He ranked third on the team this year with seventy-three tackles and second with six passes broken up. He was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and the media. His forty-eight–yard interception return for a touchdown with twelve seconds left in NU’s Nov. 1, 24-17 win at No. 17 Minnesota was a nominee for that week’s “ESPN Game-Changing Performance.”

Brendan was a team captain this year as a junior. NU’s season >nale was at the Valero Alamo Bowl, where in its >rst bowl appearance in several years it lost in overtime to Missouri. Q

grandparents day On Friday, October 3, more than 120 grandparents visited the campus of New Hampton School to participate in a favorite annual event, Grandparents Day. Grandparents are some of our most enthusiastic supporters and all look forward to spending the day with their grandchild. Head of School Andrew Menke provided a warm welcome, then the grandparents toured campus, attended school meeting, joined their grandchild for classes and lunch, and heard about many of the exciting initiatives taking place on campus. Many grandparents chose to remain on campus at the conclusion of the formal program to watch their grandchild in action at practice, share dinner, and watch some of the athletic contests over the weekend. Q summer wind reception Thanks to the generous hospitality of Barbara and Earl Lewis ’62, approximately twenty->ve alumni, parents, trustees, and friends gathered in Chatham, MA, for a reception on Friday, September 26. Head of School Andrew Menke updated the guests on many of the projects and programs currently happening at New Hampton School. All enjoyed the sumptuous food and beverages and, despite the stormy weather outside, the climate inside the Lewis home was one of festive camaraderie. Many thanks once again to Earl and Barbara! Q nhs shares expertise regionally and nationally The word is out: New Hampton School is on the move. The unfolding of NHS’s Strategic Plan upgrades and initiatives is drawing attention from peer schools, consultants, and educators, as faculty and administrators have been in demand this year as expert presenters at regional and national conferences.

Presentations ranged from Admissions Forecasting to Working with International Students, Re-Branding, Lesson Planning, Classroom Planning, and Capital Campaigns.

Director of Admission Suzanne Buck was the most visible, presenting or co-presenting at the Secondary School Admission Test Board (SSATB) annual meeting in New Orleans, the International Educational Consultants Association (IECA) national conference in Baltimore, and the Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) conference, also in Baltimore. Director of Studies Jennifer Berry ’83, Global Curriculum Coordinator Dan Love, and Technology Coordinator Hans Mundahl presented at the Independent Schools Association of Northern New England’s (ISANNE) New Teachers Conference. Director of Communications Peter Miller presented at the TABS conference, and Director of Development Sandy Colhoun co-presented with Trustee Robinson Moore ’73 at the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)/National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) conference in Denver.

Director of Technology Eric LaCroix serves on the steering committee of edACCESS, and he’s helping to plan the group’s next “unconference.” Q

update: the greatest generation challenge Bill Kerchof ’45 Created His Own New Hampton Legacy With over $100,000 in new estate gifts committed, a challenge made to alumni of the Greatest Generation by the late Robert C. Galletly ’42 has been achieved. Bill Kerchof ’45 was inspired by Galletly’s challenge and made a $50,000 estate plan for the school.

When Bill Kerchof arrived at the New Hampton Literary and Biblical Institution he came by train, traveling from New Jersey to Boston’s North Station and on to Franklin, NH—Interstate 93 did not exist. Next he boarded a bus to Bristol and Wnally caught a ride the last Wve miles to school, a trip he often made by foot.

Though New Hampton was the end of the line, it was the starting point for a lifetime of service and success in business.

“I proWted greatly from the education and start the New Hampton School gave to me,” said Kerchof. “The twelve months I spent there had a great impact on my life.” Inspired by an imposing English teacher, ‘Boss’ Hague, Kerchof headed to Colgate University before enlisting in the Army. Serving in England, France, and Germany, Kerchof Wnally returned home to join the New York Telephone Company, launching a thirtyyear career with the Wrm. But it was his experience in WWII, and the preparation New Hampton gave him, that inspired his gift. “[Members of the Greatest Generation] all take pride that we experienced a common situation — the war, the end of war, and our numbers are diminishing. There is a commonality we share.

And now it is time to pay your dues,” Kerchof explained. “Those who are able to should give recognition to the education and experiences which have greatly inXuenced their lives. And a planned gift is a wonderful way to do that.”

In 1841 medical doctor and author Josiah Bumstead wrote, “The inventor of the system deserves to be ranked among the best contributors to learning and science, if not the greatest benefactors of mankind.” What was this cutting-edge system that was transforming education in the mid-nineteenth century? Did teachers present this new system to parents, explaining how it would prepare their children for the challenges of the future? The new tool being eagerly adopted in classrooms around the country: the humble chalkboard.

To be sure, in its time, the chalkboard was an important technological advance for both teachers and learners. With teachers seen as subject area experts a chalkboard allowed maximum information transfer to a larger number of students. Today a chalkboard is no longer viewed as innovative educational technology. Instead we speak of interactive white boards, laptops, and the Internet.

Are we keeping up with the latest teaching tools? And more importantly, have our teaching methods evolved to match these new tools? Or do we simply use these new gadgets as high-tech chalkboards: e;cient methods of transferring facts from teacher to student?

We’ve certainly added some impressive new tools to our tool box in the last year including: r Laptops for every teacher r Six “Interwrite” interactive white boards, which allow teachers to create dynamic presentations and lessons that can also be emailed to students for their review r Campus-wide wireless, which allows us to connect to the wider world from anywhere on our rural campus r A technology integration coordinator (that’s me) who works with teachers and departments to bring new tools and methods into our classes

r An ambitious weekly training plan for teachers. In addition to adding new tools to our toolbox, we are also considering how our teaching methods should evolve to accommodate technical advances and address the thorny problems of our day.

Our teaching goes beyond learning and recalling facts (these puzzles are easily solved in the age of Google). Learning and recalling facts is still important, but can’t be considered ends in and of themselves. The issues that we help our students grapple with at New Hampton School encompass broader issues. One cannot look up the answer to the question of how we should use our natural resources, how we might put our economy on the right track, or what road could lead to peace in the Middle East.

These issues can only be addressed through skillful teaching guided by a thoughtful facilitator who helps students frame good questions, which can be answered through a combination of foundational skills, re?ection, an understanding of a broader context, and yes, the Internet.

That’s what makes our use of technology di=erent from Bumstead’s chalkboard. We’re not just transferring facts, we’re growing skillful learners who can apply what they’ve learned to problems that we may not even know about yet.

“bruce” the husky models a powder keg t-shirt.

bruce the husky opens up I had been looking for a job for quite some time and had been to a few interviews for mascots out west. Sure, the schools were beautiful, but when it came down to selecting the best candidate a Utah or Nebraskan school didn’t really need a Husky. So I continued my search, knowing that I needed to provide for my pups. That’s when one of my friends, “Baldwin” the Boston College Eagle, wanted to catch up with me. He’d been doing really well and he and I had known each other since becoming friends in mascot school.

I told Baldwin what my situation was and he gave me a few names. Baldwin was really adamant about this one school in New Hampshire because he knew some great kids there.

“What’s the name?” I asked.

“New Hampton School,” Baldwin replied, “The athletic director there, Mr. Arsenault, is a great guy.” Soon enough I was on my way to see New Hampton School. When I arrived the climate was great, nice and cold, just moving into the winter season. I sat down and had an interview with Mr. Arsenault that went so well he asked me to come back the next day for the Powder Keg Pep Rally.

Since then, I’ve been working with New Hampton School. The school spirit at NHS has been insurmountable. I’ve really enjoyed cheering on our sports teams with the student body, but it gets extremely hot sometimes.

I’ve been the >rst true mascot since NHS was founded so it’s a lot of pressure, but I love it. The students do too and that’s why they voted on the name and chose “Bruce.”

I met Bruce before I started the job. Bruce was an international student from Taiwan who everybody knew and loved. He was diligent, funny, and a great kid to be around. He embodied what students envisioned as a perfect Husky student. That’s why everybody voted for the name of Bruce.

People ask me what’s good about the position, so I tell them the bene>ts are great: they give me housing and food, and the spirit is great too. Now that I’ve been working here a while I’ve become good friends with Mr. Arsenault even though it took him a while to get over me “ruining his speech” by interrupting him on the >rst day on the job. I’m proud to be a New Hampton Husky and can’t wait to see you at our next game!

ib candidacy advances

by Dan Love There are over 2,400 International Baccalaureate (IB) schools in the world and 617 in the United States. New Hampton School has made great progress this year and is on the way to become the >rst boarding school in New England to o=er this valuable program.

NHS is a candidate school for the IB Diploma Program, a challenging two-year curriculum aimed primarily at students aged 16–19.

It leads to a quali>cation that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.

I have taught for >ve years with the Colorado Outward Bound School, another four years in private and public schools, and six years internationally. Of all of these experiences, I most enjoyed being an IB teacher.

I started teaching in the IB Program seven years ago in Europe. At >rst I was drawn to the program’s rigor. The level of skill and content knowledge students needed to demonstrate in order to be successful was commendable. Over time, I realized that the true bene>t of the program was the students’ ability to be creative, critical thinkers. The IB develops inquiry skills and in this way the IB classroom is not so di=erent from the NHS classroom.

Much like NHS, the IB employs a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to education. Examples of this include math classes studying the history of math; human nature’s in?uence on history in social science classes; communication as a central focus of scienti>c lab work; and cultural perspectives in literature. IB students must study a world language and take a Theory of Knowledge class, which gives them an opportunity to discuss connections that they are making in their other classes.

An IB classroom is about student-centered learning, guided inquiry, and creative, critical thinking. NHS classrooms also exhibit such qualities, however the IB adds the expectation of internationalmindedness. (See Jen Berry’s article on the IB Learner Pro>le and NHS students on p. 14.)

The IB recognizes that we live in an increasingly dynamic and interconnected global age and enables teaching faculty to take advantage of it. Teachers in the 2,400 di=erent IB schools teach the same curriculum and are networked together in an Online Curriculum Center to share ideas, resources, and experiences.

Content knowledge, assessments, and assignments are internationally disseminated, and students are the bene>ciaries. Students in one country “peer edit” literature essays for students in another; IB science students share lab data internationally; and students discuss and share ideas across borders where political restraints might make it otherwise impossible. IB allows education to be the connection between cultural and geographic distance — this is internationalmindedness for an emergent global era.

The IB is international education for a better world. The high quality is especially evident in thoughtful assessment by a multitude of methods and through a series of examples. All students complete project-based assessments such as historical investigations, recorded oral commentaries, world literature papers, mathematical proofs, and visual art gallery displays. These assignments are completed over the one or two years of study. Students >nish courses with a series of assessments, primarily essays, which record their achievements.

In contrast, Advanced Placement (AP) students take one test on one speci>c day, typically using multiple-choice exams. IB students are graded over a greater span of time and in a variety of di=erent methods. Teachers outside of a student’s school grade these exams, providing local educators with a level of international accountability.

One of my favorite aspects of the IB diploma program is the capstone Extended Essay project. Students write about topics such as, “How the changes in England’s socioeconomic levels are re?ected in the remodeling of a fourteenth century British cottage” and “Mao

Tse-tung’s deliberate use of Confucius’s teaching in China’s Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward.” Through the guidance and mentoring of a faculty member, students spend two years developing a 4,000-word independent research paper. The Extended Essay is as much or more about the process as the product.

I enjoy the IB’s approach because as a teacher, I used to think my place was out in front of students, showing them the way, making all the decisions, and >xing all the problems. I was wrong. Through the IB and speci>cally in the Extended Essay process, I realized that I must enable my students to be responsible for their own learning by experimenting; I would have to watch them do something wrong, help them evaluate what happened, and then help them think of solutions.

The real product of the process is that students “learn to learn.”

The IB does not “manage” schools but rather works to share the same educational values and beliefs of a student-centered education; the conscious and active development of critical thinking; international-mindedness; and responsible and principled action.

The mission and vision of New Hampton School and the IB Diploma Program are not merely compatible; they both focus on creating “global citizens.” When we are fully approved, NHS will be a truly innovative, international school set in our distinctive, rural academic setting.

by Director of Studies Jennifer Shackett Berry ’83 During the strategic planning process the Academic Program and Curriculum Subcommittee de>ned the NHS learner, then contemplated curricular shifts to ensure and enhance student preparedness for the twenty->rst century. Simultaneously, research led members of the group to the IB Learner Pro>le. The ten descriptors of the pro>le >t well with the learners who traditionally attend NHS while paralleling the global, explorative, and purposeful direction dictated by the strategic plan.

NHS continues to subscribe to whole child education. The academic curriculum includes not only traditional core classes but is enhanced by service learning and experiential education programs.

Co-curricular requirements and residential programs round out the student experience. Students at NHS inquire, think, and take risks both in and out of the classroom. They communicate, think, and care in all realms. Our graduates are knowledgeable, caring, balanced, and open-minded young adults who are prepared for the challenges of the college or university setting.

The parallels are obvious. Recognizing that New Hampton’s mission statement complements the IB Learner Pro>le made pursuit of the IB Diploma Program a natural course of action. Providing students with the opportunity to receive an internationally recognized diploma while simultaneously ful>lling the mission statement is both di=erentiating and strategic in ful>lling the goals set forth in our Strategic Plan. New Hampton graduates will be provided the opportunity for experiences as well as credentials to prepare them for the globalization of the twenty->rst century.

ib timeline In order to join the 2,400 schools in the International Baccalaureate Organization you need to articulate and examine the educational beliefs and values of your institution. You must also be able to demonstrate how teaching and learning at your school empowers and encourages students to become lifelong learners responsible toward themselves, their learning, other people, and the environment. An IB school needs to be internationally minded, and must illustrate how students are creative, active, and dedicated toward service. Then you must also wait. Two years.

In March 2008 New Hampton School began the process of becoming an International Baccalaureate school o=ering the diploma program, when a group of interested faculty members >lled out the “Interested Schools Form.” Filling out the form was the easy part; the next step required board of trustees approval. At the April 2008 board meeting Director of Studies Jen Berry and the newly-designated Global Curriculum Coordinator Daniel Love asked for and received unanimous approval to submit our request to be an IB school.

The next step toward our goal was assisted by our Canadianbased IB consultant, Marilynne Sinclair. She visited NHS, met key stakeholders, and concluded, “New Hampton School and the IB program are an excellent >t.”

With our consultant’s help we completed the 136-page Application Part A, submitted it, and received approval to be a “candidate” school.

We plan to implement IB curricular concepts into our 2009–10 courses. We will also provide a timeline for when faculty members teaching in the diploma program will go for training. Currently New Hampton has >ve trained IB teachers and we will be adding a Theory of Knowledge teacher and CAS (community, action, service) teacher by April 2009.

We still have the second part of our application — a re-examination of our resources, curriculum, and philosophy — to complete.

Then NHS will be visited by an on-site review team of three trained IB teachers, who will meet with the board of trustees, Head of School Andrew Menke, administrators, and teachers.

New Hampton School is proud to o=er Conversational Chinese for Beginners this year, taught by NHS Teacher Beth Grosart and native Chinese speaker Ying Xia Peterson, founder of a multimedia, online classroom experience for Chinese language acquisition.

The U.S. has bene>ted greatly from English’s status as the de facto “world language,” but this advantage has come at a price. Many Americans speak only English and until recently might not have concerned themselves with learning other tongues, particularly those from distant nations. Times have changed and there’s increased appreciation of the necessity of international trade, cooperation, and understanding. New Hampton School responded to this paradigm shift by having its Strategic Plan emphasize greater global relevancy, which provided the impetus for the school’s new Chinese course.

The comparison between China and America couldn’t be starker in terms of language: less than one percent of Americans speak Chinese, 16

while more than one-third of Chinese can speak English. “English is a standard course in Chinese high schools,” pointed out Mrs. Peterson.

The class typically meets “virtually” with Peterson, who joins in online. Students need to devote substantial time and concentration to studying on their own. “I can tell if they’ve practiced or not,” said Peterson, playfully raising an eyebrow. “No one has disappointed me yet.”

The course teaches real life and daily usage of the o;cial language spoken in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), basic writing techniques, and Chinese culture. Students are learning the phonetic system and how to pronounce characters with correct tones. The language lessons are complemented by a general introduction to China’s vibrant culture, including holidays, customs, and its “red capitalist” model of dynamic economic growth.

Chinese is Miloš Bohonek’s sixth language, but he’s way too modest to call himself a “language person.”

Languages are the most important and useful things that you can learn. I’m studying Spanish at NHS in addition to Chinese, and I already know Czech and English. I’m also learning German and know some Russian.

Chinese grammar and the way you put sentences together is an entirely new experience, which is always a good thing.

I’m learning about Chinese culture in class and from friends in the Chinese community here. The food that they eat is totally di=erent than what we get in restaurants. We made dumplings and cucumber salad as a class project to celebrate Chinese New Year, and that was very interesting to me. editor’s note: Please visit www.newhampton.org/global for recipes and coverage of NHS’s Chinese New Year’s celebration.

Jen Dargin’s friendships with NHS’s Chinese students have allowed her to build on the course’s lessons through additional practice on campus and in her home community: I’m taking French right now too and I’m also learning Korean with some of New Hampton School’s Korean students.

I expected Chinese and Korean to be similar, but they really aren’t. This was a surprise for me!

I like that now I’m able to converse with Chinese people in their native language. This includes my NHS friends Xi Chen and Sylvia Li; I get to speak Chinese with them and they sometimes help me with my homework.

There’s a Chinese market in my town (in Acton, MA), and over Parents Weekend I brought Xi and Sylvia home with me.

The three of us were speaking with the people in the market, which I really enjoyed.

New Hampton School is an international community comprised of many cultures. We asked students from each foreign nation represented on our campus to share their experiences and insights.

More than 15 percent of the student body is international. The value of an American independent school education is recognized worldwide, and in recent years NHS has welcomed students from Argentina, Australia, Burkina Faso, Bermuda, Cameroon, Canada, Cape Verde, China, the Czech Republic, El Salvador, Germany, Guatemala, Iceland, India, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Romania, Spain, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Venezuela, and the West Indies. The bene>ts are substantial for New Hampton’s domestic students, who gain international perspectives in the classroom and learn about global culture through co-curricular activities and dorm life. fabio barbosa ’09 praia, cape verde, west africa My brother is Manny Brito, he’s eleven years older. I visited when he was working at New Hampton’s summer soccer camps. People liked me and they liked my soccer skills. Before I went home Manny said that I should send my grades to New Hampton.

Manny got a job at NHS to teach Spanish and became a soccer coach, and I get to study here. I want to go on to college and get a good education, and have some options to do what Manny did.

My country is small, and people are very friendly and close. We share everything. Creole, a language from Portuguese and African languages, is the native language that we speak with friends, but Portuguese is used in schools.

People here say hi to you, even strangers. I tell my friends that the people here are very educated, very polite. miloš bohonek ’09 melník, czech republic Last year I came to the USA to learn English. During the winter I got to know NHS kids and coaches at ski races. I learned about NHS and decided to stay, and now I’m planning a PG year too.

The alpine ski program is really good. I do all the events: Slalom, GS, Super G, and Downhill. I played football this fall and had a blast. I’m also playing lacrosse.

This fall I learned about the Electoral College, and political campaigns. In Europe candidates are not allowed to insult each other!

I never enjoyed studying before, but here it is actually fun. I enjoy going to my classes — it’s something I’ve never experienced before.

In Czech Republic it’s just school and learning. We don’t have athletics, arts, and activities. It’s better here, and more convenient and more e=ective.

My mother is American and I have come to the U.S. once every two years to visit family.

I heard that Manny Brito is a very good soccer coach. He gave the tour when I visited and I wanted to play for Manny. I played mid>eld this year, and next year maybe sweeper.

Some think that Africa is a bad place, with diseases, misery, and poverty, but there are many good things too, like friendships. Most of my friends at home were surrounded by poverty. It’s not my life but I’m surrounded by it. Some kids here don’t understand poverty.

The culture here of school bonding and having activities as a group — we don’t have that at home. I was very surprised how everyone does things together. It’s a very nice plan. xi chen ’12 beijing, china I’m here to learn about America, and it’s good that others can learn about China. My roommate returned to her elementary school and told the kids that I’m Chinese. They thought that was cool.

The news on the Internet about China is old, and people here don’t really know what’s going on there. One person I met in the USA thought that women’s feet were still little (bound) in China. I laughed, “Are you kidding me?!”

It’s interesting to learn about di=erent cultures here. I have learned about Korean habits and foods. It changes something to bring students from all over the world. You can have more friends.

NHS is beautiful and the teachers are good. In China we study all day, and teachers have too many students and can’t answer everyone. Here, you get to know the personality of the teacher. The teachers have more experience than I, and I can communicate with the teachers here and learn from them. jordan elliott-king ’09 northampton, england I came to play basketball. I just got onto the under-18 team, which means I’m one of the top twenty->ve players in England.

At home I had to travel an hour and a half every day to practice, and I didn’t feel challenged. Here it’s only a two-minute walk. It’s absolutely lovely.

In Lindsay Dorm there are only nine of us, and we’ve got >ve di=erent nationalities. We all drank tea together and I told them about the history of Great Britain, England, Scotland, and Wales.

I sound like an American when I go home. I think about my accent a lot. I’ve just visited England so I’m back with lots of “brilliants,” “lovelies,” and “mates.”

The best thing is the community. It’s very comforting that when I’m so far from my family I’ve still got people looking out for me. shelby kaneb ’09 cornwall, ontario, canada I’m thinking of going into fashion or interior design. My local high school didn’t have AP Art courses, but I’m taking AP 2D Art with Ms. Shepp and 3D Art with Mr. Buck. I have two hours every day to work on my portfolio for college applications. I play soccer, too.

I only live >ve miles from the U.S. border, but some kids will ask if I live in an igloo or go around on dogsleds. Others are interested that we have prime ministers, not presidents.

When I say “I shot it out” instead of “I threw it,” or “washroom” instead of “bathroom,” everybody remembers I’m Canadian.

In Lindsay Dorm we’re having international nights, and I’m going to make poutine. It’s French fries with brown gravy and cheese curds. I know because I have friends at those schools.

Art is my strongest point; I’m more of sculptor, engaging in 3D arts. I want to be an architect, and NHS has supported me in the arts and math. Last year I studied Multivariable Calculus as an independent study, and this year I helped as a teaching assistant for AP Calculus.

Other students learn about Korean culture when I make food, or when they see small, traditional objects that I have, like a little bracelet that my grandmother gave me.

Sometimes I’ll be asked funny questions, like “Do you have McDonald’s in Korea?” But in Senior Seminar class we talked about China, Korea, and Japan. I helped explain their history and politics. christine mack ’10 cologne, germany I wanted to go to a school where I could go skiing and where the majority are boarders, so you can see your friends all the time. I really like it.

It’s a small school but so many countries are represented here. Asian students are really good friends of mine now.

Everyone here knows and tries to help each other. You can call your teachers in the night and send them e-mails and ask for help.

I never wore a T-shirt with my school name on it back in Germany.

I’m proud to see my teammates play, proud to live at a school and be part of a team. It’s not just a school, it’s a community.

People will ask me how to say German words, and ask about our school systems. Some really want to learn something about Germany and that’s great. ramon vidri ’11 san salvador, el salvador Here, you get to know everybody. It’s a really nice campus, nice people, peaceful and quiet. You don’t have to worry about too much.

There are so many other cultures here and I’ve learned a lot about so many of them. It’s a really awesome experience.

Sometimes people don’t realize that El Salvador is warm all the time, or that we’re a Third World country. I explain that we have a democratic system of government that’s a little di=erent than the U.S.A. In summer I work for my family’s Ace Hardware stores in El Salvador. We do installations of appliances like air conditioners. I learned about car engines from a mechanic and I can take one all apart and put it back together. I like watching NHS hockey games; we don’t have hockey in Bermuda.

I like English. We’re studying poetry and read Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

Our assignment was “What is your cage?”

Winter Carnival is a whole week for people to play together. The “Chubby Bunny” game was funny; you put marshmallows in your mouth and try to say “Chubby Bunny.” For Halloween my whole dorm dressed up as “Where’s Waldo?”

There are people here who I can really trust. Ms. Lima and Mr. DeBenedictis, I can tell them anything. I like to pop into the Admissions O;ce to visit Mr. DeBenedictis, because they have candy! elliot zancan ’10 barcelona, spain I came because I wanted to spend a year out of my country and study everything in English, and meet other people. People know each other here, just like in Spain. I feel comfortable.

Those who know that I’m from Barcelona ask me about “Barça.” It’s a very good soccer team.

I like Mr. Brummer, my ecology teacher. He’s a good teacher; he knows how to make the class fun. The 3D design class with Mr. Buck is also good. I made a big calculator, over three feet tall.

hamptonia: Communism was still in power in what was then Czechoslovakia when you were growing up. How did that experience shape you? farr-williams: As were many of my peers, I grew up quite sheltered. Economics and trade were centrally planned and regulated, information Wltered, and our travel was restricted to the “eastern bloc.” But my high school exchange trip to Latvia and a brief stay in Libya, where my father worked temporarily as a doctor, provided me with interesting opportunities to observe poverty and restraint under both communism in the Soviet Union and dictatorship in an Arabian country.

The generation of my parents went in their early twenties through the “Prague Spring and Summer of ’68” (the onset of Soviet occupation), and lost many dreams about possible changes to the system. Consequently, in the seventies and early eighties, politics was not discussed at home in front of the children, and my family was no exception. But my parents made sure that Russian was not the Wrst foreign language I learned, and when I was applying to university, they explained quite frankly that unless I wanted to teach the “communist version of history” I better choose an objective subject.

hamptonia: New Hampton School students have

many freedoms that you didn’t have in high school.

What do you make of these differences? farr-williams: From one point of view, it was so much easier for me than it is for nhs students, because I had only a few opportunities to make any choice or decision for myself. The “average” was promoted, aspirations were suspect, and appealing opportunities were open to only a chosen few.

On the other hand, if your outside resources are limited and freedom is restricted, you focus inside. You think about who you are, what you want, need, and can accomplish on a personal level, you get to know yourself quite well, and it is a great starting point for any teenager. hamptonia: What are your thoughts on NHS’s

international community? farr-williams: I’m very excited about the

growing numbers of international students and especially about their increasing diversity. It’s extremely important that students and educators alike have the opportunity to share our experiences, learn about our diVerent cultural and historical backgrounds, and compare our perspectives. All of the above leads to awareness, openness, respect, understanding and cooperation, which are necessary components of responsible global citizenship.

hamptonia: What do you tell your friends

about NHS? farr-williams: To my Czech friends, I Wrst

explain the model of a prep boarding school, where focus on academics is balanced with numerous opportunities to pursue athletics and arts in co-curricular activities. Then I just invite everyone to visit and experience on their own a school that provides exciting challenges, and students and teachers who cooperate and build on understanding and respect for each other.

in the Czech Republic, I found at nhs an opportunity to grow professionally. The many tasks of boarding school life represent great challenge, but also a dream job with much freedom to attempt my best and promote each student’s learning. In daily multi-modal contact I learn a lot about my students, watch them aspire, struggle, and succeed. And I can teach them on a very personal level, with respect to their individuality.

kristen casadona ’05 New Hampton Native; World Citizen Kristen Casadona’s enriching adventures abroad began the summer after her sophomore year, when Jacob Falconer, former nhs world language head, invited students on a language immersion trip to Guatemala.

Jake Falconer knew not only the geography, but also the people, and meeting them was “just wonderful” Kristin exuded. She stayed with the very same host family Jake was placed with as a student, so “it felt like a big family reunion.”

They attended one-on-one classes, four hours per day, Wve days a week, for three weeks. One activity was an inventive child literacy project: a school

bus outWtted as a traveling library—its shelves retroWtted over the seats— provided Guatemalan children the opportunity to simply hop on the bus, ride, and read.

“Guatemala is really on the edge of poverty and change. It was a wonderful place to learn Spanish. It made me love the language and the cultures of South America.”

Her second trip to South America allowed her to explore more of the country, including beautiful Lake Atitlan in the Guatemalan highlands. As a repeat traveler, her job was in one sense easier, as she could help guide new students. But in more profound ways, it was diYcult. “I saw how much had changed in just two years, and it took me by surprise.” There were more tourists, more prohibitions on indigenous groups selling their wares, more political unrest. In short, more hardship.

Kristen’s family is from the town of New Hampton. Kristen is currently a senior at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, majoring in Spanish with a minor in visual arts. She chose Holy Cross for its full-year, study-abroad program.

Last year, the city of La Coruña on the northwest coast of Spain became her new home. Students are launched into a full course load alongside Spanish native speakers at the university, which Kristen found to be quite a struggle at Wrst. She soon mastered her classes though, ranging from art history to Spanish poetry.

This year, her coursework reXects her passion for international issues, with classes in conXict resolution and international studies, a direct result of feeling such a part of the overseas communities she has been a part of.

She also teaches esl to adults in Worcester who hail from South America through one of Holy Cross’s community service programs.

“International travel and experiences allow a person to grow so much in scholarship, responsibility, wisdom, and independence,” Kristen observed, speaking of her own growth. “Most people in America simply haven’t had these opportunities. The opportunities at nhs are really fantastic; I was so fortunate to attend. I feel a bit envious of current students now that nhs is developing even more international connections!” Q – Martha Shepp

dario galindo ’69 Galindo’s Global Vision From his glass-lined oYce looking out over lower Manhattan, Dario Galindo ’69 is never far from the stately gaze of his Wrm's founding partners.

On a high wall above a heavy mahogany desk, a portrait of the Brown Brothers Harriman founders reminds him of the company's historic legacy. “We are the last remaining Wall Street banking partnership,” said Galindo with pride.

"We have twelve oYces worldwide—we are a global Wrm with business activity in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States."

Founded in 1818, just three years before New Hampton School, Brown Brothers Harriman draws on established relationships that are nearly 200 years old, with banks from London to Lahore. Keeping those relationships alive is part of Galindo's work. Taking an average of eighteen overseas trips a year, Galindo is as comfortable in London as he is in Bogotá. “I am constantly on the road, traveling in Europe and South

America,” said Galindo. “It can be a very hectic schedule. There is very little down time.”

It is clear Dario's time is at a premium. Our interview is compact yet saturated with information—the way, it seems, Galindo leads his life.

He is one of forty-one partners of Brown Brothers, placing him squarely at the forefront of the Wrm's global brand, vision, and strategic direction. “I, along with several of my partners, oversee the Central and South American region, implement strategies, assess proWtability, and oversee speciWc transactions when needed,” he explained.

It is a position he has cultivated over a long career that began in corporate Wnance at Royal Bank of Canada in its Latin American Division, and moved on to Chemical Bank before landing at Brown Brothers Harriman. But to really understand Dario Galindo requires looking back in time.

“I was internationally focused from the day I was born,” said Galindo. “My parents emigrated from Latin America to the United States when I

was three, so I have always had a global orientation.” By the age of seven he found himself in the American boarding school system, starting at Fay School. He continued at nhs, where he spent four years under the watchful gaze of Headmaster Emeritus Bud Moore ’38 and former nhs faculty member Austin Stern, before receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. "He was a good kid, a good inXuence, and a strong student," recalls Bud Moore. “But I never would have guessed how far he would take his nhs education.”

Run with it he did. Today Galindo is one of the partners covering Central and South America. He manages relationships, deals with corporate banking, mergers and acquisitions, investment management and custody work. “My background is banking. In that part of the world, business is based on deep-rooted relationships.”

The relationship with Austin Stern has had a major impact on Galindo's life. "Austin was like as second father to me. When I transitioned out of grad school, from school to work, it was diYcult," said Galindo. “Austin was there for me —he has been a stabilizing force by his nature, and a good sounding board.”

Fast-forward forty years and Stern is still keeping tabs on his old student, and they speak by phone every month. “I remember Dario as one of those kids who had unbelievable potential to become a meaningful and purposeful adult,” said Stern. “But he was having a tough time going through the motions of growing up. Still, he learned to apply himself at New Hampton.”

More than just his teacher, Austin Stern became a father Wgure for Galindo. “We found it easy to embrace Dario and to provide for him more than just a school relationship—he was a part of our family,” explained Stern. “We always saw in Dario a sleeping giant. He sure has lived that prophecy.”

As he ranges across the globe, Galindo has lived out Sterns's prediction in ways neither could have imagined. “You meet some incredibly interesting people on the road and immerse yourself in diVerent cultures and mindsets—and that is rewarding in itself." Q – Sandy Colhoun

edmund kellerman ’70 Inspiring International Service Two bombs went oV in Nepal not long before Ed Kellerman’s visit there earlier this year, but he shrugged them oV. “They weren’t targeted at Americans, it was just general unrest. While we were there I didn’t feel insecure in the least.”

A University of Florida (UF) professor, Dr. Kellerman made the trip to assist a Nepalese school, accompanied by his son, Dillon, and a UF student. He was unable to take a larger group because of fear over the bombings, but he hopes a calmer future will allow him to advance his plans for a new study abroad program.

Kellerman is a senior lecturer in UF’s Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication.

His specialties include curriculum development and international cultural communication, the

latter of which was sparked by his parents’ service in Africa and the Caribbean.

After earning his degree in speech pathology from Ithaca College, Kellerman served in the Peace Corps in Malaysia in the late 1970s. He later received his master’s degree in speech communication from the University of Northern Colorado, and his doctorate in education from UF. “My main stock in trade right now is study abroad to Malaysia,” Kellerman said. “It’s a six credit, four-week program.”

Malaysian ties led, in a surprising way, to his new project. Kellerman’s wife is Malaysian, and in 1992 she informed him that she had met another Malaysian woman on the UF campus who, like her, was married to a tennis coach.

Ed learned tennis from Coach Lansing Bicknell at nhs, while his fellow UF coach, Hem

Lama, picked up the game in his native Nepal.

As the Kellermans and the Lamas became closer Ed learned about Hem’s work with the Nabha Deepti School for orphans and indigent schoolchildren in Kathmandu.

A grant from Florida’s Bob Graham Center for Public Service enabled Kellerman to visit; he’s now on the board of “Project Nepal” which supports the school.

Ed acknowledged nhs’s role in his career path. “My academic skills, compared to my friends who went to public schools, were so far ahead. By the time I hit college I could write papers and do presentations. Now as a professor I recognize that value of an nhs education.”

He is quick to cite Bud ’38 and Jinga Moore as inXuences, as well as “G,” Lou Gnerre, whose manner is fondly recalled. “He loved us,” Kellerman said simply. Long ago words of wisdom from Coach Bicknell Wnd their way into Professor Kellerman’s lessons on leadership.

“Here I am forty years later, telling my students the things that he told me on the tennis court!”

Ed credits his own success as a tennis coach (an eight-year run with Wve district championships in six years) to “Coach Bick.”

Kellerman continued, “I remember nhs being fairly forward thinking, that’s what allowed it to survive and attract high-quality students. It took me a long time to realize how much the curriculum at New Hampton School lent itself to that homey, family feeling.” nhs’s “openness” is expressed in Kellerman’s style at UF, where his oYce door is always open.

“That’s unusual,” he said. “I deWnitely learned about this at nhs.”

New Hampton’s tradition of outreach can also be found in his volunteer projects. Kellerman said, “At some point, you really say to yourself, what is really important in this life?” It’s clear that he’s found an answer through his new aid project, which provides needed supplies and support to the Nepalese while inspiring today’s American students to international service. rick peyser ’68 Coffee’s Community Advocate Rick Peyser ’68 has traveled extensively throughout Latin America, Europe, China, and Africa during his twenty-one years with Green Mountain CoVee Roasters (gmcr). As director of social advocacy and coVee community outreach he works alongside international organizations and local communities to improve conditions for struggling coVee farmers. gmcr devotes 5 percent of its annual, pretax proWts to support these social and environmental initiatives and Rick ensures that these funds are well used.

Rick describes New Hampton School as “the best two years of my formal education.” Peter Sterling, Peter Bixby, and Bert Lamb were among the faculty who nurtured his intellectual curiosity. He moved to Vermont in 1972 after graduating from Denison University. After nine years in retail sales he joined gmcr as mail order marketing director, joining a company

with thirty employees, a few shared computers, and $6 million in revenue. This year, gmcr reported revenue of $500 million, faithfully dedicated to its mission “to create and sustain a values-driven company that views proWt as a means to achieve a higher purpose.”

Rick was named public relations director in 1995 and decided to explore coVee’s origins, visiting remote Guatemalan and Mexican communities at his own expense. “It was a lifechanging trip… the enormous poverty really woke me up,” he said. “The farmers were very proud of their environmental focus, and organic coVee.” He returned a year later for a self-funded, Spanish language immersion program.

Rick recommended adding organic coVee to gmcr’s inventory and was also a facilitator as the Wrm adopted Fair Trade certiWcation, a challenging and time-consuming process, for many of its coVees. (Fair Trade products and Keurig, singlecup brewers are presently leading gmcr’s growth.)

“Everything I’ve been passionate about in this company relates back to where our coVees

come from,” said Peyser. “There are farmers and families behind the coVee rather than it simply being a commodity. I work with coVee communities on projects to support local eVorts to improve their quality of life.”

CoVee is the second most heavily traded commodity (behind petroleum), but the twentyWve million growers struggle during months when food and resources are scarce. Rick is collaborating with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture to survey, strategize, and empower these impoverished farmers.

Gathering data from and carefully listening to the multitude of stakeholders yielded a project that gmcr has funded in its initial year in remote Nicaraguan villages. Farmers are receiving assistance in diversifying their land, growing some of their own food, and participating in a farmer’s market to support the broader coVee community. Additionally, gmcr has funded University of Vermont graduate scholarships, recruiting students from coVee countries to assist in monitoring/evaluating projects. Preliminary conversations between gmcr and Save the Children may result in a much larger initiative.

Rick has served as president of the CoVee Kids Board and of the Specialty CoVee Association of America, and is a board member of Fair Trade Labeling Organizations International. He traveled to Shanghai as a keynote conference speaker, hosted Jane Goodall at an international conference in Seattle, and was hosted by her in Tanzania. His continuing Latin American volunteer eVorts—embraced by gmcr—include providing marketing assistance and guidance to remote communities.

Despite his world travels, Rick and his wife, Jan, a clinical psychologist, are happily grounded in rural Vermont. His son, Daniel, is married and in graduate school; his daughter, Suzanne, is a civil engineer.

A soft-spoken, humble gentleman who cares deeply about helping others, Rick appreciates a career with such a measurable sense of purpose.

The state-of-the-art, 28,780-square-foot Pilalas Center for Math and Science is slated completion this fall. Groundbreaking for the project was in April 2008, and the building has since taken its place on the school’s “Academic Row” along Main Street. The project’s total construction cost is $9.6 million.

Head of School Andrew Menke commented, “Jason Pilalas and his wonderful wife, Rena, are among New Hampton School’s most fervent supporters and steadfast friends. Their wisdom, guidance, and good humor have been highly instrumental to our on-going progress and success, which makes the naming of the new facility so appropriate. manny brito sets the example New Hampton School is privileged to have such a talented and dedicated member of our community, Emanuel Brito, known simply as “Manny.” This year is Manny’s fourth year at New Hampton School and his third as head coach of our Men’s Varsity Soccer Team. Manny brings a unique quality to our school as a coach and father >gure.

Manny was born in Cape Verde, Africa, where he learned to speak six languages and grew passionate for soccer. He found his way to Connecticut and enrolled in Choate Rosemary Hall School, where he >nished high school. Manny left the United States to play soccer in Italy for a year before returning to attend St. Lawrence University, where he received BS and MS degrees. He found the time to be a four-year All-State player and two-year All-American.

Manny’s passion for soccer didn’t end after college. He traveled to Portugal where he played for a year and then returned to the U.S. to play for the Boston Bull Dogs professional team. Manny also played for the Rhode Island Stingrays and is now a member of the New Hampshire Phantoms team.

Manny’s résumé is impressive, but it doesn’t reveal his best qualities when it comes to coaching at New Hampton School. Manny is much more than a coach, he is a role model to his team, a con>dant 30

to many of New Hampton School’s international students, and a father >gure to his younger brother, Fabio Barbosa ’09. (See p. 18) Fabio came from Cape Verde two years ago to play for Manny at NHS. They have a special relationship of brotherhood and respect.

Fabio didn’t speak a word of English when he arrived and was frustrated in his classes, but Manny stayed up with him late into the nights to translate. Manny made sure Fabio didn’t quit and took advantage of the opportunity to go to New Hampton School and play in the U.S. Manny is also respected by students because he is understands, listens, and has experienced many of the same things they are going through. Students seek out Manny’s opinion when it comes to college, athletics, or travel because they know he won’t tell them what they should do, but help them make those decisions for themselves.

Manny exempli>es understanding, resilience, commitment, and acceptence, and he presents those characteristics to our students in a way that they want to resemble him. He is an invaluable aspect of our athletics program.

field hockey team models toughness and pride Women’s >eld hockey is played with a hard plastic ball and girls in skirts wielding sticks. One might think these girls meek, or this game mild, but don’t be fooled, the game is rough and our girls are tough.

NHS’s Women’s Field Hockey Team is energized by a new turf >eld, consistent coaching, and Husky pride.

“Field hockey is meant to played on turf,” said Head Coach Rebekka Joslin, and Kennedy Field, opened in fall 2007, >ts that bill.

The synthetic >eld allows for a faster, smoother game, and as the speed of the ball on the >eld has increased so have the team’s skills.

They react faster, hit harder, stand lower, and have become more >t.

Practicing everyday on Kennedy Field has given our girls the advantage of developing their skills more easily than playing on grass.

Consistent coaching gives any team con>dence and we are >nally giving our girls that advantage. There was a lot of turnover in coaching in the past, but we are focused on the future. Next year’s seniors will have had Assistant Coach Beth Grosart for four years and Head Coach Rebekka Joslin for three. These women are knowledgeable, motivated, and passionate about the game and their team. They demand forward progress and positive attitudes, and the team projects that mindset at practice, in games, and o= the >eld.

There is a reciprocal nature to the >eld hockey team. Having athletes who are aggressive and zealous for the entire sixty minutes

brings up the level of play and inspires the coaches, and when the coaches are inspired so is the team. The team’s con>dence in the coaches has grown over the last few years due to stability and trust.

This fall’s team exuded Husky Pride. With its 11-5 winning season and a place in the NEPSAC tournament, the team was as gracious when it lost as when it won. Their most important game of the season didn’t win a spot in the tournament or break any record; it was when the Huskies took on the Holderness School Blue Bulls, a team we had never beaten in the history of the program. Not only did the Huskies triumph, they shut out Holderness 2-0.

The girls value hard work and commitment over scores and records, which are just great side e=ects. The >eld hockey team’s pride became contagious. They were expected to keep up their grades and cheer on not only their teammates, they could also be seen all over the athletic >elds in their green and white rugby shirts cheering on their fellow athletes. They made signs to support the football team, gave out Gatorades, and used their warm up laps as an opportunity to cheer on soccer players.

New Hampton >eld hockey is a program on the rise. We are proud to call them Huskies!

LOU’S CORNER

Hello friends, As I write, students are studying for semester exams and anticipating Christmas break. My granddaughter, Michael’s daughter, is completing her >rst semester. Can you believe it — my granddaughter at NHS. I am truly getting old. One hundred years ago Paul Feigenbaum ’73 was one of my algebra students. A few years ago, his daughter was one of my algebra students. I thought I was old then!

It’s snowing. I hope it doesn’t snow every day like it did last year.

It’s tough on the back. I just >nished shoveling a path to the hot tub so I can soak the muscles that are sore from shoveling the path! The town is aglow with Christmas lights and as I look around, I think so much has changed and so much remains the same. There are many new buildings and >elds since Pat and I came here in 1957; many new faces, many new, challenging academic programs — you wouldn’t believe the curriculum. But it remains the same quiet, caring place.

Well enough nostalgia for now. This issue of the Hamptonia will be the last before Reunion Weekend in May. Of course, everyone is welcome to return but we will be concentrating on those classes whose graduation year ends in “4” or “9.” Special emphasis will be

on the Class of 1959, which will be celebrating its 50th Reunion. I’ve been in contact with a number of you and as the weekend approaches, I’ll be calling and writing. I hope you have heard from some of your classmates — a number have volunteered to help get folks back. I would love to hear from you. class of 1941 Kenneth Spillman was one of 2,000 vol-

unteers, including his own family that traveled a great distance, to place 10,000 holiday wreaths on the gravestones in a section of Arlington National Cemetery during December 2007. Ken, along with three other individuals, represented the World War II soldiers to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

As a wwii veteran, this was a powerful, meaningful, and memorable experience for Ken as well as the multitude of volunteers. He added, “What a great honor and experience—words cannot express the feeling.”

This year’s house is special because it will be the 300th hfh house built in Louisville, a remarkable achievement in less than twenty years, and in the age of foreclosures, metro Louisville hfh has had to take back only two homes. down a lot in the past two years. My lungs are getting worse and my legs are not holding up too well and I have been overweight for many years. I do have oxygen for use in the house.

But, I decided that I would Wnally get my left full knee replacement so I went on a diet and have lost forty-four pounds to date. I feel better and am walking much better except for the lungs. I guess it takes a good reason to do all this. So far all is well and all the plans for therapy are set. As for my photography, I am still at it every weekend around the nearby region. We are just Wnishing the fall color season and it’s been spotty and fair, but I still take hundreds of shots and print and show them everywhere I can. Nothing in northern Idaho is like New England, I really miss the

color there. Next spring I plan on a few long trips around the west to my favorite spots in Oregon, Montana, and Idaho. Remember, the camera is my retired life. It is my love and my drive that makes all this worthwhile.”

Reid Pepin writes, “I am retired after fortythree years of practicing dentistry in Lowell, MA. Berit and I celebrated forty-Wve years of marriage. We moved to Burlington, VT, in 2004 to be near my son Craig [Bates ’88] and wife Cindy [Bates ’89] and grandchildren Ethan, 12, and Reid, 8. Both are faculty here, Craig at Champlain College and Cindy at uvm. Berit and I divide our time between Moosehead Lake, ME, from May to Oct, and Burlington. I have been active in hiking, skiing, and sailing, albeit at a somewhat slower pace. Warmest greetings to all classmates, hope to see you at the 60th. Sorry I missed the tribute to Bud Moore, one of the best teachers and mentors ever. I shall always be most grateful for his inspiration and guidance.”

Unfortunately the economic picture suggests that I will be fully employed for the foreseeable future. Because I teach, my schedule conXicts quite precisely with fall and spring reunions. If I were a hedge fund manager, I would bribe the school to have a reunion in July when I usually am in Maine at my cottage on Lake Mooselookmeguntic. Alas, my teacher’s salary doesn’t allow me to support nhs monetarily, but I owe much to Bud Moore, Joe Gauld, and many others. I wish I could pay them back. In one way I am paying tribute to my nhs mentors. I am currently in my 48th year in education—earlier in administration now in teaching only. I’m still teaching Julius Caesar and Our Town just as I taught at nhs. I am even a good grammar teacher although my nhs classes will remember that Billy Bascom taught me so that I could teach the likes of Andy Moore ’65.

The featurelength documentary followed the proceedings of the Van Cliburn Foundation’s 5th International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in Fort Worth. Steve has served as stage announcer and emcee for the competition since its creation ten years ago and has served in the same function for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for the last twenty years. He sends his regrets at being unable to make it to the upcoming class reunion, which conXicts with the vcipc in May of 2009.

Bill Descary recently informed us that on Chet Nichols is living in Aiken, SC, where

he raises camellias for show competition. He is working on uranium and germanium exploration in Texas and Wyoming and the Midwest for a company in Tucson, AZ.

The whole exercise is giving me a greater appreciation of the judicial system and its limits. I’m also teaching a course on evolution at the institute. The institute rents space in a Baptist Church on the AU campus, I’m not allowed to teach my course at the church so AU gives me a room on campus.”

Edward Whanghee Ghang from CheongJu, South Korea, sends his heartfelt congratulations to the Moores on their recent gala celebration honoring their decades of service to New Hampton School. He adds, “Mr. Moore’s always been my ’silent’ mentor for almost six decades ever since I got accepted at New Hampton School in 1953. Needless to say, a day hasn’t passed by without thinking of nhs. I’m eternally grateful to you, Mr. Moore, truthfully, I’ve been profoundly blessed with a ‘miracle’ in life because of your enormous generosity. Aloha and best wishes.”

Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of California, where he has been a judge since 1988. He recently completed a ten-year term of additional appellate duties as a member (chief judge 2007–08) on the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the Ninth Circuit. His daughter Mary (University of Chicago 2004) has graduated from Stanford Law School and is in private law practice, daughter Susan (ucla 2008) works at a law Wrm in Germany, and daughter Helen is an undergraduate at University of California-Irvine.

Unfortunately our business will not allow us to be able to attend. My wife Carol and I own Bethel Hill Bed and Breakfast in Bethel, ME. It is a home we recently remodeled to be an eco-friendly, boutique B&B and is located in the historic district of Bethel Village. We also operate Androscoggin Home rentals with three vacation rental properties in the area around Bethel and Sunday River Ski Area.

Carol is a clinical nursing supervisor and I manage our properties. I am also a level 3 psia ski pro. I teach and am a staV trainer at Sunday River in the winter season and do some volunteer staV training at Maine Handicap Skiing. It would be great if any classmates coming this way would look us up (info@bethelhill.com).

Tom Haufe writes, “This e-mail is to encourage all of my classmates from the Class of 1969 to attend the upcoming reunion next May. After all it’s been forty years since many of us have seen one another. I still have my hair (although very grey ) most of my own teeth, raised four children (successfully, how did that happen?). I have done pretty well career-wise, live a comfortable life, work too hard and too long, but none of that matters.

What would be truly great would be to reconnect with all of my former classmates at least one more time. (We aren’t getting younger, contrary to what some of us from the baby boomer generation would still like to believe.)

I have been in contact with about Wfteen former classmates over the last year and most will attend. I encourage all my other classmates to attend and see/learn what happened over the last forty years. If not hilarious, at least could be interesting!”

Bill Sherwood shares, “My son Sam was a member of the acting company for the Summer Theatre at Meredith Village and lived on New Hampton School’s campus during the summer of 2008. Coincidentally, he lived in the same room in Ebbels that my brother Michael lived in during his senior year in 1972. I don’t know where son Sam caught the acting bug. We (wife Julie and I) visited him twice but didn’t see any familiar faces.”

class of 1972 Phil Bensen, managing director of

Franklin Templeton Academy, has accepted an international assignment. He will work closely with Vivek Kudva, India country head, and Sandeep Singh, India sales head, to design, develop, and oversee a new internal wholesaling and sales support operation in India in addition to his current academy responsibilities. Phil added his own personal note, sharing, “I have settled in Hyderabad with my wife, both kids still live in the United States, but hopefully will visit soon. We are active in a small but very fun expat association, both working hard and getting to know how diVerent things can be around the world. I’m still upset that I missed our most recent big reunion, 2007 was thirty-Wve years. I’m especially sorry to have missed seeing Barry Smiley, Donnie Williams, Ron Norwood, Holly Hamel Siff, and all

class of 1973 Robinson C. Moore was inducted into the Bowdoin Hall of Honor this fall. “An extraordinary two sport athlete,” Rob excelled at lacrosse and soccer for Bowdoin College (Class of 1977), and later played soccer profes-

class of 1974 George Faran writes, “I have (Wnally)

retired from the Wre service after thirty-six years. Many of my classmates remember the Wrst days of my service, starting in 1972 with the New Hampton Fire Department. I worked for several years in the 1970s and 1980s for the Plymouth Fire Department full-time and retired from full-time service after eight years with the Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid Association in 2006. During this time I moved to Bridgewater and remained a part-time WreWghter and emt with the Bridgewater Fire Department until this month. I continued my interest in ice hockey through several adult leagues and stopped playing in 1997. I got into coaching youth hockey about Wve years ago and am presently the head coach for the White Mountain Youth Hockey Midget Team (16- to 18-year-olds). We practice and play our ‘home’ games at the Lindsay Arena at nhs! Stop by on Tuesday or Thursday evenings and watch us in action. This year I was also asked to assist with a sudden vacancy at the Holderness

School and have assumed the duties as the head coach of the Boys JV Hockey Team. So I’ll be seeing some of my former wmyh players (who are now nhs students) on the ice again!

I am active with the Bridgewater Mountain Snowmobile Club as the trails administrator and operate the groomer from time-to-time in what little spare time I have left. I am working for a company called Mega Print, Inc. in Holderness for Jay Buckley. We do large-format digital printing, and I run the order desk, receiving and assigning in-coming orders. Jay’s daughter Dana Buckley graduated from nhs last spring and his son Jay graduated from nhs in 2006. It seems I run into nhs students or alumni all the time! I hope to see lots of my Class of 1974 classmates at our upcoming 35th reunion!”

class of 1975 Mark Baron is running a successful insurance agency, Baron Long Term Care Insurance.

He is also the director of Long Term Care Insurance for the BulWnch Group in Needham, MA. For the last year, Mark has been a regular hosts on The Money Matters Radio Show on Boston Business Radio, wbix, 1060 AM. He is on every Thursday morning after the 10 am news for about twenty minutes or so. (Go to www.moneymattersradio.net to see his photograph.) The Web site also lists other stations that have now picked up the show, and anyone can listen to the show live. His kids are now 14, 18, and 28, and they live in Andover, MA. He adds, “I still think about Rudy Nunez and Andrea Bourget, two people who I knew quite well at New Hampton. Rudy and I traded e-mails a short time before he passed away. I was trying to help him Wnd alternative therapies for his pancreatic cancer. Andrea and I used to carpool back and forth to nhs, and I still can’t get over that. My best wishes to Mike Leporati and family. She was a super person.”

class of 1977 Samantha Jewett married Brian Connelly

on October 29 at the Four Seasons Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo. Originally planning to be married on the Island of Nevis, Hurricane Omar had other ideas and just a couple of days before their wedding, Plan B was launched. It turned out to be wonderful as they were treated royally with fabulous food, attentive staV, and a 1,500-square-foot suite, which included an outdoor living room and a ceremony in The Presidential Suite overlooking the PaciWc Ocean at sunset (a last minute oVer made by the hotel staV) followed by a private dinner in the same location. As Samantha recently wrote, “So needless to say, Brian and I, the little Hurricane Omar refugees from New Hampshire were treated like royalty!” Samantha is an attorney with Haughey, Philpot and Laurent, P.A. in Laconia and a member of New Hampton School’s Board of Trustees. Brian is a 2009 doctoral candidate at Franklin Pierce University with a degree in leadership. Congratulations Samantha and Brian!

The last few years were in a local free clinic helping the uninsured. We love to telemark ski, hike, bike, and be outdoors. Idaho provides us with so much opportunity for these things, however I do love and miss the New Hampshire forests.”

recently shared the following update: “Last March, while skiing in Vermont, we took a day trip over to nhs so I could show my kids what I’ve been talking about all these years. I had trouble convincing them that I slept over at school and had to walk outside to go eat.

The school looks great, much the same including the memorable staircases in Berry Hall, the cafeteria, but in twenty-three years (has it really been that long) a lot has changed. The athletic facilities are top notch. I continue my career in banking, seventeen years with Lake Forest Bank & Trust and with the support of my husband, Jim, have worked out a nice banker/mom/wife balance. Our boys, William (12) loves skiing and soccer, Charlie (10) enjoys snowboarding and golf. Dina (Manister) Hebein ’85 and I see each other often and often laugh about our fun days at nhs. Hello

When Mandy Cronin accepted her New Hampton School Athletic Hall of Fame award, she was understandably overwhelmed and omitted thanking her family in her acceptance speech—unintentional and heart-breaking when Mandy realized too late that she had not publicly thanked her incredible family for their unwavering support. Korea last August to teach English as a second language for at least a year. Matt has made travel/world view experiences a priority with visiting Iceland; Scotland with regard to the environment; then he spent the month of February 08 in New Zealand. New Hampton’s own Marius Petravicius played for the Lithuanian National Basketball Team that participated in the Beijing

Olympics. Marius attended the University of South Carolina and then went on to play overseas, where he is currently playing on the BC Lietuvos Rytas team. Along with his former club Mitteldeutscher BC, Marius won the fiba Europe Cup. In 2004, Marius was named the Final Four mvp.

class of 2000 Bob Morton writes, “After reading the fall issue of Hamptonia and witnessing the void left by my class, I thought I would give a quick note about what I am doing. As of right now, my hobbies still consist of snowboarding and biking, but I have added in motorcycle racing for pleasure, not competitively. I’m working in the family company as Wfth generation in the purchasing department. Our factory is north of Chicago and I am living nearby enjoying the Midwest! I have two beautiful and healthy baby girls aged six and two. The six-year-old just started kindergarten and is loving school.”

Topher Harlow is excited to begin his career as head coach for the Plymouth State University Ski Team. He takes over a successful team with the men’s team placing second last year and the women’s team placing third last year at the nationals. Great to have Topher close to nhs once again!

Jonny Williams recently wrote to share the following news: “The New Hampton School is being well represented these days in the Massachusetts Heavy Highway Construction Industry, as three classmates (Jonny Williams, Garrett Keane, and Craig Hoffman) are all involved in building the next generation of Massachusetts highway infrastructure. Jonny Williams and Garrett Keane, both of The Dow Company, Inc. (Dracut, MA), are in constant daily contact with Craig HoVman of the Scituate Companies, Inc. (Scituate, MA).

Whether it is pricing up precast concrete materials for many of the numerous jobs Jonny is involved in bidding, or scheduling deliveries, paperwork submittals, Wnal design issues and/or Wnal pricing for the projects Garrett is managing, Craig has been a reliable, dependable, and proven resource to utilize in this cut-throat busi-

class of 2002 After a year of working at a boarding school in Utah, Will McDonough has returned to New England to work at the New Canaan Country School in New Canaan, CT. veterinary college but didn’t get in, so I am returning to my university to take some courses and play my Wnal year of eligibility in hockey! We have Wve years here in Canada to play a varsity sport and I had such a great year last year being captain of the team and all that

Lauren Casadona is spending a year in

Australia and writes the following: “I’m living with a lovely family of four whom I met in Boston through another lovely family I

worked for as a nanny (and whom I miss dearly) throughout my time at Boston College. We are located in an incredible little suburb called Middle Park, just outside of the city of Melbourne. The beach is a Wveminute walk from the house, and everything is within walking distance (great since I’m without wheels here). The public transport system is fantastic here as well, so I’ve always got new places to explore in relatively close vicinity. At the moment my schedule varies during the week, but for the most part I spend my days with a beautiful little girl named Charlotte (one-year-old) until her brother William (Wve and a half years old) Wnishes school. As far as the social scene, I’ve been fortunate to have an old friend from my New Hampton days return home to Melbourne just after I arrived, so Mike Magee (for those of you who know him) has been showing me the ropes. It’s been great meeting his family and seeing his side of the globe; my life would certainly be very different without him! I’ve also met a few local friends (some nannies, some not) who are fantastic company. The rest of my friends are scattered across this massive continent,

so hopefully I’ll be heading to see them all at some point during the year…”

Craig Leaman recently shared, “This is my last year at uvm and things are going by so fast. As for my skiing career here at uvm, I can’t race my senior year due to an injury that keeps getting worse every year. I have four herniated discs in my back so my passion is Wnished but I hope to share my knowledge with younger racers here in Vermont. I will be coaching this winter at Green Mountain Valley School, which is one of the top ski academies in the northeast. I am truly excited for the experience with coaching but it’s going to be tough. As far as my family it keeps growing and growing. Laurel, my sister who was a teacher at nhs, has a child of her own now. His name is Nolan and he is about a year and half. She is going back to nursing school next to Wnish up, and as for me, I am planning to follow her with my own plans to go to nursing school after I graduate. I hope all is well for everyone at good old nhs and can’t wait to see everyone this year at the Reunion Weekend.”

doing well! I am currently Wnishing up my last year at Quinnipiac University as a biology/pre-med student, minoring in chemistry. Recently, I have done research on ergogenic substances and also have help in on research involving diVerent types of bacteria. I stopped playing Division I college ice hockey, and chose to focus more on academics. I am actively involved in the Connecticut Polar Bears Girl’s Ice Hockey program, coaching most of the age groups. I am also involved in the usa Hockey National Festival Camp process. It is diVerent being behind a bench coaching rather than making things happen on the ice as a player. I deWnitely enjoy and love coaching! Once I graduate in May, I plan on going back to school. I am very happy to see New Hampton is making science and math a focus in the school’s curriculum. I wish the best of luck to everyone!

Ashley Marren writes, “I’m doing well. I graduated last year with my associate’s degree.

Right now I’m living on Long Island, NY, and working at a daycare. I really enjoy teaching the kids and playing with them all day! On November 1 this year I married David Grills of the UK. We were married in front of a small group of friends and family in Central Park, New York, NY. The day was great, the weather, the company, the food, was perfect! We went to Disney World for our honeymoon. In June 2009 we are having a reception (for family and friends that couldn’t attend) in NH, still unsure about exactly where but things will be sorted out soon. We are also planning a Mediterranean cruise after our June reception.

Nick Robillard writes, “Since I graduated

from New Hampton I haven’t done a whole lot until now. I joined the United States Air Force and I am in special operations, para rescue. So far I have been traveling the U.S. getting all kinds of excellent training and great experiences with a lot of amazing people. I have been training for about a year and half and I should be graduating by October ’09. Hope all is well at New Hampton!”

class of 2006 Lynny Gonzales is playing Division III ice hockey at Utica College. Her team is ranked sixth in the nation. She recently was named athlete of the week and is currently tied for Wrst place on her team for leader in points scored. She is studying criminal justice in school and recently enlisted in the United States Army National Guard and the school’s rotc program. Upon graduation she will be a commissioned oYcer in the Army’s military police service.

Tim Hourihan is participating in The

Audubon Expedition Institute (aei) at Lesley

College, a program based through reXective writing. He explains further, “The aei is out of a bus, yes a bus. This is not just any old bus, it’s full of storage. There’s even a full library. I would strongly recommend it for anyone who is interested in environmental sciences, sustainable agriculture, and teaching. All our work is independent and all discussions are lead by your peers. My teachers at aei don’t seem like teachers one bit, I can only relate it to the role of advisors while I was a nhs. These past months I have lived in the northwest part of the Adirondacks pursuing environmental studies. Also I have been taking black and white photos as a part of my major, a major that I would like to call environmental Wlm and photography. I had the privilege to spend a week on the St. Lawrence at Akwasanae, the Iroquois Nation. Bob Stevenson, a Matee, lead us around the nation. The land was very beautiful, willow trees and crystal clear water. Though this land looked beautiful it was extremely polluted by major industries such as gmc, and others whose factories dumped pbcs into the St. Lawrence River from the 1950s. To this day people cannot eat local Wsh, wildlife ceased to exist (which is coming back slowly). Also this past spring I was in New Zealand on a nols semester.”

I hope to see as many Huskies as possible while back in New England this winter (December ’til March). enjoying my freshman year here at the University of Rhode Island. Although it is similar to New Hampton, it’s not the same as the loving place I left about a year ago. Classes are going well for me so far, and I hope it stays that way. As many of you may already know, I play for the basketball team. I am surrounded by a very special group of guys that I really like. The coaching and training staV are great.

We have a tough season ahead of us. We play some really good teams this year (Duke, Oklahoma State, vcu, and Villanova to name a few). Some of our games will be televised so be on the lookout. All in all I miss New Hampton and hope to visit sometime in the spring when basketball season is over. I hope everybody has a fun and safe year and I look forward to seeing everybody in the future.”

Stonehill College sophomore Kristen McWhirter was named Most Valuable Player at the Skyhawks Classic for games played November 15–16.McWhirter scored a career-high nineteen points and added eight rebounds and six assists as the No. 8 nationally ranked Skyhawks defeated No. 25 Shepherd (West Virginia) University 67-53 in the opening round on Saturday. “Kristen was great for us,” said Stonehill head coach Trish Brown.

“These are exactly the kind of performances we expect from her. She had an outstanding weekend and hopefully it will continue.” Then in Stonehill’s 68-35 win over BloomWeld (NJ) College, she scored the game’s Wrst seven points as the Skyhawks raced out to an early 20-5 lead. She ended with thirteen points and three rebounds in just eighteen minutes of action. College is amazing! I am having such a wonderful time. I’m playing the cello in the school orchestra and am part of a trio. I also started crew for the Wrst time. I am a coxswain, so I basically boss people around all the time; it’s fun. We had a really great season, coming away with Wrst and second in our Wrst race.

Winter training has started already, and the spring season will start in February (not yet spring, I know). I’ve kept myself really busy so far, but there is still so much that I want to accomplish. I hope that four years will give me enough time to do so. Although the workload is crazy, it’s really nice to Wnally settle down and become accustomed to college. It’s a big change, but I’m loving it so far and hopefully continue to love it. Go Huskies!”

Plymouth, NH, March 2, 1921. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II from 1944–46, and received his honorable discharge. He had worked as a machinist for Jones and Lamson and helped build many homes while working for Tomlinson Builders. Vincent was maintenance manager for many years until his retirement.

His wife, Esther (Luddy) Tilton, died in 2006. He is survived by three sons, Wayne Tilton, Rodney Tilton, and James Griswold; Wve daughters, Margery Tilton, Eileen Burbank, Mary Shumway, Judy Rennie, and Diane Verheyen, among other relatives. F

Joe W. Gage of Cumming, GA, passed away on June 2, 2008.

He was born in New York, NY, on May 13, 1924. He graduated from Edward F. Searles High School, Methuen, MA. 1941. He served in the European Theater of Operation during World War II as a radio operator in the 97th Mortar Battalion attached to the Third Army. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1951 with a BSME degree. Joe spent most of his engineering career in the air conditioning Weld, designing equipment and systems with the following companies: Worthington Corp., East Orange, NJ (eighteen years); Fedders Corp., Edison, NJ (three years); and Southern Company (Georgia Power Company) Atlanta, GA (Wfteen years).

He was an active member of the North Atlanta Church of Christ and served as deacon in a number of ministries.

Surviving are his wife of forty-two years, Betty M. Gage, Wve children and their spouses: Traci and Donald Fairbairn, Darnestown, MD; Douglas and Diane Gage, Taylorsville, GA; Kelly and Thomas Jones, Woodstock, GA; Karen Gage, Blue Ridge, GA; Scott and Judith Gage, Duluth, GA; among other relatives. Joe was preceded in death by his Wrst wife, Ardyth R. (Tallman) Gage and their two children, David and Robin. F

class of 1936 George Bartemus, 90, of Bow, NH, died July 8, 2008, after a brief illness. He was born in Concord and was a graduate of Concord High School in 1934. He attended nhs, where he was on the soccer and ice hockey teams. He received his degree from Nichols Business College in 1937.

He worked at his family’s business, G. N. Bartemus and Company Grain, for many years before going to work as a civil engineer and land surveyor for the State of New Hampshire for more than forty years.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Madeline Irving Bartemus of Bow; two stepsons, Henry B. Lupien and his wife, Sharon, of Weare, and Marshall T. Irving and his wife, Tammy, of Brentwood; a stepdaughter, Janette Lee Irving of Tucker, Ga.; among other relatives. F

class of 1938 John B. Arnold, 88, of Norwell, MA, died on July 31, 2008,

at home after a long illness. John was born in Rockland and resided in Norwell for over Wfty years. He was a graduate of Rockland High School, nhs, and mit Class of 1942. He served in the Navy during World War II. John was president of H. H. Arnold Company in Rockland. He served on the board of directors of the Rockland Trust Company and the Hingham Mutual Fire Insurance Company. John is survived by his loving wife Lois (Sewell) Arnold and his four children, Stephanie Arnold; Richard Arnold; William Arnold and his wife Mary, all of Norwell; John (Jack) Arnold, Jr. and his wife Kelly of Scituate; among other relatives. class of 1941 Edmund (Ned) Bilhuber of Madison, NJ, 84, died peaceful-

ly on April 10, 2008 at his home. In 1969, Mr. Bilhuber founded The Milton School, now in Livingston, NJ, a nonproWt, non-sectarian secondary school to help children with learning disabilities, and served as chairman. Ned grew up in Douglaston, LI, NY. A member of the class of 1945 at Colgate University, he graduated in 1947 after serving two years as a combat medic in a riXe company with the 104 Infantry Division in Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star for valor. He then attended Harvard Business School and New York Institute of Finance. After retiring as co-owner of Economic BeneWts Corp. in SpringWeld, NJ, Mr. Bilhuber then founded and was president of The Solutions Group. Surviving him are his wife Janet, son Paul Bilhuber of Millburn, NJ, daughter Pamela Blair of Carlisle, MA, among other relatives. F John A. Devine of Lexington, MA, died January 31, 2008.

Husband of the late Judith (Black) Devine, brother of the late Warren Devine, among other relatives, John was a member of the Massachusetts Bar for over Wfty-two years and was the longtime secretary of the Central Middlesex Bar Association. He worked extensively as an attorney in providing representation to individuals who had no means to otherwise hire an attorney. He was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran. F

class of 1939 William J. (Bill) Rogers of Kennebunk, ME, died April 2, 2008, after suVering an abdominal aneurysm. He was 87.

Rogers was a World War II Wghter pilot who served as national commander of the American Legion in 1976–77. He was the Wrst Mainer elected to the American Legion’s top national post and testiWed in that capacity before Congress in opposition to giving up the Panama Canal.

An Auburn, ME, native who attended Syracuse University, Mr. Rogers joined the Navy when the war broke out. He began pilot training at the University of North Carolina with Boston Red Sox greats Ted Williams and Johnny Pesky, who was Mr. Rogers’ roommate. During the war, Mr. Rogers Xew carrier-based f6f Hellcats in the PaciWc. He later became active in veterans’ aVairs, helping to found American Legion Post 153 in Auburn and serving as the organization’s state commander in 1955–56.

Mr. Rogers spent part of his civilian career in the Washington, DC, area, where he worked for the U.S. Brewers Association, retiring as vice president of public relations. Upon his return to Maine, he worked for the US Department of Labor as Maine’s veterans employment and training service director.

He leaves his wife of sixty-three years, Constance; and four children, Peter of Augusta; David of Weston, MA; William Jr. of Selah, WA; and Bonnie Banks of Kennebunk. F

class of 1942 Rene Leon Boudreau of Yarmouth, ME, passed away unex-

pectedly on September 19, 2008 at age 83. He is survived by his wife Barbara and sons James Karle and Robert Addison, among other relatives.

Rene was born in Pittsburg, PA on January 25, 1925. He attended New York City public schools up until his sophomore year when he transferred to nhs. It was at New Hampton that he Wrst met his future wife, Barbara Ferson Rich of Portland, ME, who was the sister of one of the other students. After graduation he enrolled in Bowdoin College where he pursued a degree in history. He interrupted his studies to enlist in the Army, which shipped Rene overseas to England. When Germany launched its last oVensive (later referred to as the Battle of the Bulge) in December 1944 Rene was sent to the front and fought in the 273rd Infantry, Company G, near Patton’s Third Army, helping to stop and later push back the German advance. He continued participating as a ground soldier up until the end of the war.

Rene was a sales representative for Stuart Pharmaceuticals, next a sales representative for Barnes and Noble’s College Outline Series and later in medical publishing working for McGraw Hill, Yearbook Medical Publishing and Lippincott in succession as an editor assisting doctors in publishing medical textbooks. class of 1945 Raymond F. Jahn, 80, died September 9, 2007. He was born

in Brooklyn, NY, and lived in Stuart, FL, for the past twenty years. Prior to retiring, he worked for Union Carbide as a sales representative for thirty years. He was a Navy World War II veteran and a graduate of Colgate University. Survivors include sons, Stuart F. Jahn of Las Vegas and Doug R. Jahn of Churchville, MD; daughter, Susan Strowger of Horsham, Pa.; among other relatives. F

class of 1947 Arthur B. Casterline, Jr., died on December 14, 2003. He was born in Malden, MA, on August 7, 1927. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was assigned to the AsiaticPaciWc theater of operations. He has lived in the EnWeld, CT, area since 1946 and was formerly employed as a lieutenant in the State of Connecticut Department of Corrections. He retired in 1986. He was predeceased by his wife of forty-nine years, Dorothy, and his sister, Arline Mercer of LaPuente, CA. He also leaves his dearest friend, Tracy Hinckley of Windsor Locks, among other relatives and friends. F

class of 1949 Thomas C. Morganstern Sr., 77, formerly of Weston and Barnstable, MA, passed away on March 23, 2008, after a brief illness. Beloved husband for 53 years of Nancy (WoodruV) Morganstern. Devoted father of Thomas, Jr. and his wife Wendy of Falmouth, ME, and Roger of Ashland. Brother of the late Maynette Tollas and Virginia Teel of Centerville, among other relatives. Thomas earned his BS and MBA from Babson College.

During the Korean War he served as a Lieutenant JG Navy pilot in Squadron VP2. For forty-four years he sold and serviced equipment to the pulp and paper industry. F

class of 1951 Herbert H. Morton, 72, of Shrewsbury, MA, died September 17, 2004, after a brief illness. Mr. Morton was born in Franklin, NH, son of the late Philip Morton, and raised in Ashland, NH. He graduated from nhs, then attended Bates College in Maine and later graduated from Bentley College with a degree in business administration.

Herbert was an outstanding athlete in three sports both in prep school and college. He later signed a baseball contract with

He retired in 1996 as director of information services from Cadre Technologies in Providence, RI. Herbert devoted most of his life to youth activities and received many awards from the Roberto Clemente Men’s Softball League of Worcester for his work as head softball oYcial and contributor to the youth program. He leaves his wife of Wfty years, Eveline (Parent) Morton; a son, Gary M. and wife Andrea N. Morton of The Woodlands, Texas; daughter Doreen D. and husband Richard M. Putnam of Hubbardston, Mass.; among other relatives. F Francis Scanlon, 75, died June 17, 2008, at his home. He

class of 1953 Richard L. Tivey, 73, of Campton, NH, died November 26, 2008, at his home after a long illness. He was born in Laconia March 23, 1935, to Edward F. Sr. and Lilla [Mudgett] Tivey. He grew up in New Hampton. He lived in the Plymouth area for most of his life. He worked as a car salesman for many years at Bob David Motors, in Plymouth, and Meredith Ford. He served Plymouth and the former Plymouth State College for many years as a police oYcer. He worked at Eastern State Rental, and during his retirement part-time for Wide Guys Auto Parts Store in Ashland. He had a great appreciation for nature and enjoyed, canoeing, Wshing, hunting, bird watching, and gardening. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and served in Vietnam. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph “Jay” Tivey, in January of 2006.

Family includes his daughter, Kathleen “Kitty” Tivey of Hendersen, NV; two grandsons; two sisters, Joyce Perry of Middletown, RI, and Beverly Godville of New Hampton; and several nieces and nephews. F

2008. Jack was born April 10, 1935, in Laconia. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a landscaper at the Taylor Home for Wve years and formerly worked at nhs, Tilton School, and South Down Shores.

Survivors include his wife of forty-eight years, Sara (Sears) Hanson of Laconia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen H. and Scott Rice of Gilford and Linda H. and John Miller of Laconia; among other relatives. F Edward “Ted” I. Ritson, 72, of Gilford, NH, died on July 16, 2008. Ted was born March 1, 1936, in Nashua, NH. He was raised in Greenwich, CT, and graduated from nhs and Clark University. He served in the Army and was employed as a systems analyst with Honeywell and by the State of New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services.

class of 1956 William “Billy” T. Ferns Jr., 71, died May 3, 2008, in Concord, NH. Bill was born in Concord on February 17, 1937. He attended St. John’s High School in Concord, where he was the captain of the football team and met his wife, Carol McManus.

He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1960 and remained an avid fan of the Fighting Irish throughout his life.

Bill will be remembered by many as a successful businessman and innovative leader. He will be missed by his loving wife of forty-eight years, Carol M. Mr. Johnson was the beloved husband of Margaret Ann (Porteus) Johnson and devoted father to Kenneth Alden Johnson and his wife Nancy, and Elizabeth Ann Roguet and her husband Olivier, among other relatives he left behind. Islands, formerly of Holbrook, MA, died September 26, 2007.

Loving father of Ryan Gordon of St. John, USVI, and Gigi Gordon of Boothbay Harbor, ME, among other relatives he left behind. Frank was an academic and athletic standout at Boston College (BC) High School, nhs, and Columbia University.

Frank is a member of the BC High School Hall of Fame and was named to the New York Times All American Team for Columbia University. F

class of 1977 class of 1958 Thomas H. Slayton, 69, of Bridgewater, NH, died

November 8, 2008, at his home from complications of NonHodgkins Lymphoma. He was born in Nashua on Feb. 8, 1939, and was raised in Amherst and Milford, before moving to Bristol, where he attended Bristol High School. He later attended the nhs, graduating in 1958.

Following high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served for three years before returning to the University of New Hampshire. He graduated in 1965 with a degree in English literature. Mr. Slayton enjoyed a career in journalism, starting as a student at the Bristol Enterprise and later as a reporter for the U.S. Army’s Stars and Stripes at Fort Slocum, GA, and then as the editor of The New Hampshire at unh, and bureau chief, reporter, and photographer for the Foster’s Daily Democrat and Keene Sentinel.

He served the state in public relations for more than twenty years with the NH Division of Health and Human Services and the NH Developmental Disabilities Council.

Family includes his wife, Virginia; sons Christopher of Manchester and Jeremy of Canterbury; among other relatives.

A memorial service and interment in the Old Home Cemetery in Bridgewater will be held in late spring 2009. F

Paul B. Cook, 46, a Hopkinton, NH, native, died June 27, 2006, of lung cancer in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He is survived by his longtime friend, Gerard Desmarais; his mother, Carolyn Cook; his sister, Hollis Cook; and a large extended family. He attended Hopkinton High School and Boston University and graduated from nhs and Emerson College. He spent a rewarding career in the radio Weld in Boston, California, and Florida, and credited nhs for the background necessary for college and career. F

class of 1980 Barry N. Finn, 46, of Bridgewater, MA, formerly of Swampscott, entered into rest May 17, 2008. He was the beloved husband of Carol L. (Wojcicki) Finn, devoted father of Adam and Nicole Finn, and loving brother of Robert Finn-Clarke. F

class of 1989 Charles Peter Loomos passed away on June 27, 2005.

Charles loved nhs and often said how it was the best year of his life. He made good friends and loved the family atmosphere and the closeness of the student/faculty relationship. After nhs, Charles graduated from Bentley College (marketing major). He worked in computer sales and eventually gravitated to real estate. F

February 1, 1941, in Glens Falls, NY, he was formerly employed by the NH Department of Transportation as a computer specialist in the time when computers used magnetic tape for programs and storage. Dean Jacobson’68 brings a wealth of business and management experience to New Hampton School. Dean and his wife, Bo, are the owners of BoDeans Baking Holding Company, LLC, which they founded in 2000, and which specializes in delicious support structures for ice cream: cones, sandwich wafers, and packaging. The company is located in Le Mars, IA, just north of Sioux City. Bo and Dean reside in Delray Beach, FL, and also have a home in Park City, UT. Dean graduated from NHS in 1968, received his BA degree from Colgate University, and his MBA from NYU. In 1974 Dean joined Mobil Oil as a >nancial planner and control analyst, staying for two years. He moved on to American Can Company to become a group product manager until 1982. For the next seven years, Dean worked as vice president of marketing at the paper products company, Fort Howard Corporation. From 1989–94 he held the same position at the Sweetheart Cup Company. He put in two years at Chicago Tissue Company and four years at Ace Baking Company as president/CEO to round out his employment experience, before founding BoDeans in 2000.

Dean was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young in 2003, and BoDeans made the INC 500 list as the 242nd fastest growing privately held >rm in America. He is a member of the YMCA board in Le Mars.

Also joining the board is Gene Rainville, a 1957 graduate of NHS. He was born and raised in Pembroke, NH. He attended Colby College, earning his BA in 1961, and completed the US Marine Corps O;cer Candidate program that September, in Quantico, VA. He was assigned to US Naval Flight Training Command and was designated a marine aviator in 1963.

Gene served in Vietnam in 1964–65 as a pilot in command of Marine Squadron 365.

Returning to the U.S., he served as ?ight instructor at helicoptor training squadron in Pensacola, FL. In 1966, Gene returned to Southeast Asia as a civilian, working for an agency of the U.S. government in support of actions in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. He left Saigon in April 1975 as the city fell to the North Vietnamese.

He held various sales positions with Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita, KS, and overseas, from 1977–90, and became director of worldwide sales. In 1990, he became senior vice president of sales and marketing for the Falcon Jet Corporation, responsible for sales in North and South America and Asia. In 1995 he accepted a position as executive vice president international for Gulfstream Aerospace, from which he retired in 2000.
