Sheriff's Challenge reception at The Old Bailey On Tuesday 11th June, the students who took part in The Sheriff's Challenge were invited to a reception at the Old Bailey - the most famous criminal court in the UK. The aim of the reception was to celebrate the students for taking part and delivering outstanding speeches. We were rewarded with an exclusive tour of the venue, networking opportunities and motivational speeches to encourage us to continue striving for success. We would like to thank Mr David Lock and Ms Cates for taking us on the visit. We are also very grateful for the hospitality we were shown at the Old Bailey and we would strongly recommend that students in Y10 next year take part in the Sheriff's Challenge." - written by Gabriel (10E).

Sports Day 2024 Congratulations to everyone involved in Sports Day 2024. Lots of fantastic performances from over 200 students showing a brilliant level of personal challenge.

These students showed amazing resilience to break another four school athletics records.

PE / Science / MCFL Talk2Learn 7 B&Y students getting involved in talk2learn today!

Their topic is “Football is essential to global happiness”.

Talk2Learn is a whole year group debate opportunity which is run in KS3. Students learn about the topic in three or more curriculum areas and then use that knowledge to form the debate.

Geography Fieldwork in Epping Forest Geography is one of the most engaging, informative curricula I have studied and, contrary to popular belief, Geography is so much more than rocks and geology: it's about the physical and human geography that is intertwined with all areas of society, including politics, maths and even river management and housing.

On the 22nd May 2024, my Geography Y10 class undertook a trip to Debden Brook, to investigate how the river changes as we moved downstream. Intermittent rain, however, did not dampen the fun we had whilst gathering data from each site, spurred on by friendly, welcoming FSC staff Will (who guided us in Epping Forest). While the data collected may have been an “anomaly” due to heavy rains the previous two days, we did get an opportunity to gather data at Site 1 and 2. Unfortunately Site 3 was a no go due to the increased velocity and river depth. It was funny seeing how some were soaked by the river, while others were (fortunately) not. I can imagine how a few might’ve felt after going into the river: a mixed bag of regret, flooded wellies, laughter and mud. Lots of mud.

We took photos at each site and did a field sketch at site 2. The students enjoyed the river fieldwork especially since for many it was their first time going into a river. A great day knowing we put our theory into practice.

Geography Fieldwork in Stratford On 3rd June 2024, the Y10 Geography students undertook their second trip to Stratford, Newham to conduct fieldwork in an urban environment.

In Stratford, we focused on the regeneration efforts following the 2012 London Olympics. During the course of the day we visited four sites. Carpenters Estate has had no regeneration. East Village and the Olympic Park have undergone major regeneration. Hackney Wick is currently undergoing regeneration. After having gone to these four areas it is clearly evident that in the regenerated areas, the services on offer increased. There was a notable difference in the quality of buildings located there. Hackney Wick was really interesting with the artworks, restaurants and residential areas along the canal.

We explored the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and observed new housing, leisure facilities, and green spaces. To gain deeper insights, we conducted surveys with local residents and visitors, asking about their views on the changes and the impact on their lives. Responses varied, highlighting both the benefits of improved infrastructure and concerns about rising living costs.

MCFL Y10 Spanish Trip to the Instituto Cervantes We had an amazing session at the Instituto Cervantes in London where 19 year 10 Spanish students participated in a workshop focused on learning about Spanish and Latin American culture through football and sports. They looked at the Jude Bellingham's progress in learning Spanish, Aitana Bonmatí's learning of English and they learned vocabulary centred around football and other sports. The boys readily spoke out and participated in Spanish. Mr Galoria and I were extremely proud of them. (Miss Jenkins, Head of MCFL)

Y9 Football Match Report vs Langdon Congratulations to our Y9 football team for their brilliant performance against Langdon School. An imperious performance from player of the match Best Iyawe in midfield.

Special mentions to goalscorers Dominic Arthur and Ollie Devlin as well as Bilal Barrett for his confident performance in goal.

Y10 visit the Charles Dickens Museum "On Wednesday 12th June, we visited the museum and home of one of the greatest British authors of all time: The Charles Dickens Museum. We were given a tour of the museum from expert guides - our guide even had a PhD in Dickens! We were praised for our excellent conduct on the visit and the guides were very impressed with the questions we asked and our passion for learning.

We look forward to the workshop next week which will further enhance all that we learned on the visit and teach us how to apply it to our English exams.

Bank of England Educational Talk As part of the education programme being offered by the Bank of England the Y10 Geography students enjoyed an informative talk linking to the history, role and function of the Bank of England. Discussions also centered around the economy, taxation, monetary policy, crypto currencies and the impact inflation has on interest rates and price of goods. During question time students asked relevant questions that linked to the routes to becoming an employee with the bank. They were informed of potential career paths and the starting salaries for graduates. Tanae Hamilton informed students on what a typical working day is like . She was really impressed by the range of questions students asked.

Year 9 Students Attend Ground-breaking AI Conference at Pinsent Masons Our Year 9 students attended an AI conference at Pinsent Masons in London on 13th June 2024, which brought together students from Manchester and Northern Ireland. Our students returned with a deeper understanding of AI's usefulness and its far-reaching impact on society. The conference not only broadened their horizons but also ignited a sense of curiosity and responsibility towards the future of technology.

The event began with an inspiring keynote speech by BBC commentator Dan Sodergren, who discussed the transformative power of AI. This was followed by a speed networking session where students interacted with professionals from various industries, learning about AI's role in their careers.

Highlights included a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities and a 360-degree view of London from the rooftop. The day concluded with discussions on the ethical and social implications of AI. Overall, the conference was highly productive, enhancing students' understanding of AI and inspiring them to explore its future potential.

Here are some of the comments by our students: Abdul N: “I enjoyed the trip to Pinsent Masons as it educated me on the various career paths and different jobs that I may pursue in the future and how they all utilize AI to make their jobs easier, more efficient, and produce more accurate results. The trip was also very useful as it introduced me to many different successful people who have taken various career paths but all still use AI in their daily lives. It also showed me how they have revolutionised their job sectors through the use of chatbots and generative AI in the last couple of years. Overall, I quite liked the trip and found it incredibly useful, and I would definitely recommend it to any student who gets a chance to go to Pinsent Masons.”

Kalvin T: “My name is Kalvin, and I am in Year 9. Today, I was given an amazing opportunity to visit a prestigious law firm in London called Pinsent Masons. The main theme of the workshop was Artificial Intelligence (AI). We participated in various activities and sessions about the ethicality of AI, its applications in the everyday world, and how clients of Pinsent Masons use AI for their businesses. The best part for me was the client meetings, where we learned about the uses of AI for major companies, besides lunch, of course. In conclusion, the trip was truly amazing, extremely informative, and very fun.

I really enjoyed my time there. It was an exceptional workshop dedicated to teaching the youth about the next era, and I would definitely go again if I had the chance. Thank you!”
