Eastlea Coffee Morning on GL Assessment We will be holding a parent/carers’ Coffee Morning on GL Assessment on Monday, 21st October between 9.30 and 10.30 am. This will an opportunity where you can find out more information about Eastlea’s GL Assessments and their use in your child’s education.

What are GL Assessments?

GL tests are online tests taken by students and the information obtained from the test helps staff to identify students’ strengths and any gaps in reading, maths and science. The tests can reveal barriers to learning in order to identify and support children with additional educational needs, provide evidence of progress and directly inform teaching strategies.

Who should attend?

Everyone is welcome to attend but the coffee morning will be of particular interest to those parents and carers with children in key stage 3 (Years 7-9) who wish to understand more about how their children’s progress is tracked and targets set in school. if you wish to attend the coffee morning, please R.S.V.P. to namrah.ghazali@eastlea.ncltrust.net.

Extra curricular activities at Eastlea

The Vaccination UK team will be in school to administer the flu vaccinations to all students on 21st and 22nd November.

Information and consent forms have been sent by Parentmail.

If you wish your child to take part in the programme, please ensure the consent form is completed.

Greenhouse Sports After-School Cricket Coach Jones of Greenhouse Sports has joined the PE Team at Eastlea and is offering cricket sessions at the school Mondays KS3 Sports Hall 3.15 - 430pm (Boys) Tuesdays KS3 sports hall 3.15 - 4.30pm (Girls) Wednesdays 3.15-4.30- (mixed) OLD GYM, Thursday KS4 OLD GYM GH CC Friday (mixed) 3.15-4.30pm Old GYM Coach Jones welcomes new students and those who have previously been part of the Greenhouse Sports offer. Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) - Information for secondary school parents from East London NHS Foundation Trust What is DLD?

DLD is a language and communication disorder Having DLD means that one has significant, ongoing difficulties understanding and/ or using spoken language It affects all languages that a person speaks DLD was previously known as Specific Language Impairment (SLI) There is no known cause of DLD which can make it hard to explain.

DLD is not caused by other medical conditions, such as hearing loss, physical impairment, Autism, learning disability or brain injuries. However, children and young people with these difficulties may also have a Language Disorder.

What signs may a young person with DLD present with?

Difficulty understanding instructions, questions and information Limited vocabulary or difficulties finding words Difficulty understanding puns, idioms, jokes, sarcasm, slang and age-appropriate TV programmes/films Difficulty thinking flexibly Difficulty remembering what has been said Difficulty paying attention in class Difficulty learning to read and decode texts.

Difficulty making friends and maintaining friendships Difficulty understanding and managing emotions Difficulty telling narratives (e.g. saying what they did during the day or what happened at break time) DLD can look different in different individuals and their specific skills may change with time.

Language difficulties may also lead to behavioural difficulties such as low self-esteem, anxiety or misbehaving in class.

DLD can also occur alongside other difficulties, such as, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD), Dyslexia and/ or speech sound difficulties.
