From the Principal This newsletter celebrates just some of the highlights of our students’ achievements in 2019. Our mission is to create a caring, supportive community, based on trust and respect, where academic excellence is achieved and each individual’s gifts and talents are nurtured. I hope that you will enjoy reading about the fruits of this endeavour. We are proud of the contribution made by each member of our community, to do their best and to use their abilities and skills to give service to others, especially those in greatest need. The successes set out here are testament to the hard work, commitment and courage of our students. Many have succeeded in the face of significant difficulties and adversity. Others have worked to overcome academic challenges arising from specific educational needs and have gone on to excel in their examinations. We also thank our wonderful teaching staff, who have worked with such dedication and care. They have truly gone the extra mile, giving generously of their time to encourage and support their students. We have an exceptionally talented staff team, who have tremendous expertise and enthusiasm to inspire in others a love of learning and to share their passion for areas of academic specialism.

Most Able & Talented
New Hall School has a thriving programme of activities that stretches and challenges our most academically able. We believe that the learning habits required to achieve academic success can be nurtured in all our students and that even the most able can develop to even higher levels when set intellectual challenges and opportunities to think creatively. The Director of Studies oversees MAT provision and each department has its own Most Able & Talented coordinator who ensures that stretch and challenge is promoted across all areas of the curriculum. The New Hall Learning Habits are embedded across the curriculum and have been particularly beneficial to our most able students in fostering resilience, thinking skills and intellectual courage. New Hall has a strong record of recognising and supporting students who display achievements in all areas of school life. Through careful use of setting and an extensive academic co-curricular programme, our most able students are given the encouragement and opportunities to stretch themselves and to produce outstanding results. Our focus on developing students’ learning habits, whilst inspiring a lifelong love for their subjects, equips them with the skills and motivation they need to excel as they face the more challenging material at A Level. Furthermore, our excellent pastoral system is able to support our most able students to ensure, that above all else, they maintain a healthy balance in their studies and that they have the independence and confidence to succeed at university and beyond. This performance can be illustrated by comparing the performance of our most academically able students (those in the top sets/top third of their cohorts) in Year 13. The figures on the following page are from the 2019 examinations.
