Our 370th Year Celebrations Outstanding Academic Achievements
A Year of Celebrations Welcome to New Hall Preparatory School - a place where children can thrive academically in a kind and caring environment and where gifts and talents are recognised and nurtured. This brochure is designed to share with you some of the highlights from our last academic year and I hope it will give you a taste of the exciting life which children experience when they come here. Once again, we have been delighted with the outstanding academic success of our pupils. Every Year 6 pupil reached or exceeded the national average of a National Curriculum Level 4, with 57% achieving a Level 6, which is only achieved by 1% of Year 6 pupils nationally. In Mathematics, a number of pupils also gained a Level 7 which is an outstanding achievement for children of this age. We have a new After School Care facility which has recently been graded ‘Outstanding’ by the local authority, and we have just opened two new junior boarding houses for younger boarders with exceptional facilities and a dedicated team of staff. Sport continues to flourish with our teams excelling in numerous different fields including: cross country, rugby, netball, swimming and athletics. We are proud to be at the forefront of the development of girls cricket and we are one of the first schools to be forging links with Chelmsford County Cricket. Our Under 11 Kwik Cricket team won the Chelmsford Schools Partnership and the boys Under 10 team remain unbeaten. The Performing Arts have always been a strength of the school. Our choirs and orchestra have delighted audiences in concerts and competitions across the year. The Year 6 production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a superb celebration of music and drama. An Award-Winning Education New Hall Preparatory School offers a rich and varied curriculum and we pride ourselves on teaching outstanding lessons which encourage the pupils to aim for academic excellence at all times. Small class sizes of around 20, differentiated lessons and setting in English (Years 5 & 6) and Mathematics (Years 3-6) ensure that pupils are appropriately challenged and make exceptional progress. This is evidenced by our high Foundation Stage results and National Curriculum results, which are consistently above government expectations for the given age ranges. We believe that children excel academically when they are inspired to learn. The curriculum is delivered through a range of exciting and engaging topics and supported by stimulating visits, trips and activities.

Students, staff and friends of New Hall School joined with the founding Religious Community to celebrate the 370th anniversary of the Community and School at a special thanksgiving Mass. This celebration was held at Westminster Cathedral where the Senior and Preparatory School Choirs provided the music. Everyone was especially delighted when they were repeatedly mistaken for the Cathedral’s professional choir!
Performing Arts In 2013, Year 6 pupils gave amazing performances in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, where the school’s theatre was transformed into a magical forest where “nothing is quite as it seems”. The Years 5 and 6 Chamber Choir performed at the O2 Arena as part of the largest school choir in the world. Pupils from the Preparatory School were invited to participate in Senior School concerts, such as the Jazz Evening, demonstrating their exceptional talent. The annual Easter Concert, Foundation Stage Easter Treat and Key Stage 1 Easter Tea were all entertaining events and the Infant Choir’s performance was certainly a highlight at the New Hall Voluntary Service Strawberry Tea in June. Preparatory School pupils gave great performances in the spectacular annual dance show, this year entitled ‘Moving Pictures’, featuring dances to music from classic and modern films.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Sporting Success New Hall Preparatory School pupils benefit from vast grounds, outstanding facilities and professional coaches for a wide range of sports. This year, pupils have represented the school in a range of sports - from rugby to tennis and netball to cricket. A highlight of the sporting year for the Preparatory School has been the successful launch of a girls cricket team. The U11 girls team won the majority of their games this year and were crowned Chelmsford Champions at the Partnership Competition in June, proving that there are big things ahead for this developing team. One girl was selected to play in the U12B Senior School team with the boys. In June, the first New Hall Girls Kwik Cricket Festival was held at the school. Some famous faces, including cricketing legend, Gordon Greenidge of the West Indies and Susie Rowe, who has played cricket for England and Kent, came to support the girls and give some helpful advice. The U9 rugby team had a particularly good season, winning the majority of their matches. We are very proud of their fantastic achievements. In swimming there were lots of competitions and galas, many of which were held at New Hall’s 25-metre indoor swimming pool. New Hall swimmers had another great year of results, including both the A and B teams winning their sections at the Annual Mid-Essex Schools gala in June. Two pupils were selected to attend the national IAPS finals.

Preparatory School pupils have also been demonstrating their talents in other sports including golf, go-kart racing and sailing. To conclude a great year of sport, everyone took part in Sports Day in July, where the overall winning team was St Luke’s.

Early Years For many pupils life at New Hall Preparatory School begins aged 3 years in our Pre-Reception. The indoor nursery is a bright, airy space purpose-built for the delivery of early years education. It is set in the stunning grounds of the New Hall campus, which are often used by our pupils for nature trails and activities. The PreReception curriculum, in keeping with our ethos, puts an emphasis on the all-round development of your child. Children in Pre-Reception are taught through seven areas of learning including: personal development, literacy, communication and language, problem solving, understanding of the world, creative development and religious education. Pre-Reception pupils have opportunities which aid their development whilst also being fun and engaging, such as staging small-scale productions for Easter and Christmas and the annual Valentine’s Tea Party, where children make food and decorations and parents are invited to participate.

Spiritual Life As a Catholic school, we recognise that God is at the heart of all that we do. With this in mind, we are actively involved with many charities and fundraising projects throughout the year. This year the School Council have excelled themselves by raising funds for various charities, including Marie Curie Cancer Care. Amongst the activities to raise funds for this worthwhile cause was a Fundraising Day where pupils took part in fun games and sold yellow cupcakes. Our children are always keen to help the school’s New Hall Voluntary Service (NHVS). At Christmas they help to entertain the elderly at the annual Christmas lunch by singing carols and playing their instruments; in the summer, they help with the annual Strawberry Tea.

Collective worship is an important part of life here at New Hall. As well as assemblies, there are liturgies throughout the year such as our Harvest Festival, May Procession and Advent services. Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 classes have special class liturgies and Key Stage 2 have Year Group Masses. On holy days of obligation and special feast days, Mass is celebrated in the School Hall. Developments This year has seen the completion of two new junior boarding houses for pupils aged 7-13. In Earle House, for boys aged 7-13, pupils enjoy wellequipped shared study bedrooms with a ‘country lodge’ feel, games and study rooms and specialist staff who provide younger boarders with the care they need. In Magdalen House, for girls aged 7-13, pupils are able to enjoy their own private garden, beautifully decorated single and double bedrooms and homely communal areas for crafts and activities. This year also saw the completion of the refurbished Refectory at New Hall School. There are new serving areas, salad and jacket potato bars, new seating and floor-to-ceiling windows. In 2012, we opened a new Art and Design classroom in the Preparatory School, which is also home to the school’s outstanding After School Care. At After School Care pupils are able to take part in activities and study, after the school day.
