Sport Our sportsmen and women at New Hall School compete at county, regional and national levels, at which they have enjoyed individual and team success. Our facilities (including a national standard athletics track, floodlit Astroturf pitch, fitness suite, 10 floodlit tennis and netball courts, cricket and rugby pitches, Golf Practice Nets and a 25-metre indoor swimming pool) set us apart and the rich variety of sports on offer include rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, swimming, athletics, golf, riding, skiing and tennis. New Hall students are able to develop their team spirit and physical development through our rich programme of sporting opportunities. Under the guidance of expert coaches, including former international sportsmen and women, New Hall balances first-class training for those with particular sporting talents, with an inclusive ‘sport for all’ approach.

Drama Years 7 and 8 Drama Clubs: Most members are involved in Production Rehearsals and the show itself during the first half of term. In the second half of term we will resume meeting as usual to develop skills and enjoy creating theatre together. Production Rehearsals: These are a key element to the co-curricular programme and take place throughout the week. Towards the end of this term, we will embark on a journey to prepare for a whole Senior Division production and those selected by audition to take part will be expected to attend every rehearsal with creative energy and focus in abundance. In recent years, productions have included A Christmas Carol, Treasure Island, Much Ado About Nothing, The Sound Of Music, Footloose and Shakespeare in Love. This term we are rehearsing for a major production of Oliver! in May.
Students are invited to get involved as on-stage performers but also in the technical and practical aspects of making theatre. This can include assisting with lighting, sound, set design, construction, costumes, theatre make-up, stage management and stage crew. Please speak to the Drama Department staff about opportunities in those areas. Additional elements: The Drama Co-Curricular programme includes public speaking, debating and one-off events or competitions. In recent years, New Hall has excelled at the English Speaking Union (ESU) Public Speaking Competition and after submitting entries for the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Shakespeare Monologue Competition 2022, we will find further opportunities to participate in national events. Please enquire about these opportunities and listen out for news about how to get involved and the commitment expected.
Drama
Trinity College: This college offers an unrivalled choice of qualifications for students and teachers of drama and speech. It is an international exam board and independent education charity that has been providing assessments globally since 1877. New Hall has a long tradition of entering students for LAMDA qualifications and we are excited about the opportunity for students to transfer skills gained from past experience and use them to develop further through the wide range of options and fresh possibilities that Trinity Drama will provide. It is entirely feasible for students to enter Trinity at a similar or the same level as they had reached in LAMDA. Students taking Trinity Examinations are encouraged to bring their own choices and interests into exams and there is flexibility to enable them to perform to their strengths while developing new skills. The examiners are trained to be friendly and approachable in order to put students at ease and give maximum encouragement. This is an encouraging development and having been accepted formally as a Trinity Drama Centre we will go all out to establish ourselves, with an aim of becoming a Trinity Champion Centre in due course.
‘Acting is a sport. On stage you must be ready to move like a tennis player on his toes. Your concentration must be keen, your reflexes sharp; your body and mind are in top gear, the chase is on. Acting is energy. In theatre, people pay to see energy’ Clive Swift

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is highly respected in School as an opportunity for students to develop leadership, teamwork, demonstrate commitment and experience the outdoors. Sessions after School will teach students about navigation, compass skills, map reading, as well as cooking on a trangia all in preparation for a two day, one night expedition during the Trinity Term. This is a sign up activity for students with a cost implication.
Sessions after school will build on the skills that students start to learn throughout the Bronze sessions in Year 9 including navigation, compass skills, map reading as well as cooking on a trangia. Students can direct entry onto the Silver Award or transfer their Bronze into Silver. The ex¬peditions will take place later this academic year and are three days and two nights; both will need to be completed. This is a sign up activity for students with a cost implication.
Gold is the pinnacle of the Award scheme and is very favourably considered by universities and employers. Sessions after School will build on the skills that students start to learn throughout the Silver sessions in Year 10. Students can direct entry onto the Gold Award or transfer their Silver onto Gold once they turn 16 in Year 11. The expeditions will take place later this academic year and are four days and three nights; both will need to be completed. This is a sign up activity for students with a cost implicatiion. Further information about signing up will be available later this term for Year 11 students and in September for Year 12 students.

NHVS Founded in 1978, the New Hall Voluntary Service has been providing help and support to vulnerable members of our local community for over 40 years. Working alongside adult volunteers and members of Year 12 who act as leaders, Senior Division students give up their free time once a week to help run the Action Groups. The elderly, children and adults with specific learning difficulties are among the many people who benefit from the work of the NHVS both here at school and at venues throughout Chelmsford.
Shaftesbury Evening Club This is an evening group held at New Hall in the Barn, for local adults, some with learning or physical difficulties, to socialise with each other and with students and volunteers. Guests enjoy playing games and celebrating birthdays. Melbourne After School Study Club The Melbourne Study Club is an initiative set up by two of the former Community of Nuns that used to be based at New Hall. They currently run the scheme at the Scout Hall on the Melbourne Estate in Chelmsford, where children from disadvantaged families come after school to get help with their study.
NHVS Wilderness Lunch Club This is a lunchtime group for students to visit an allotment in Chelmsford run by the Wilderness Foundation UK. Whilst at the allotments, students contribute by assisting with the maintenance of vegetable plots for the benefit of members of the local community.
Tuesday Tuck-In, Red Cross Lunches, Barn Banquet and Friday Feast These are lunchtime groups held at New Hall in the Barn that give students the opportunity to have lunch with visiting elderly guests, while sharing stories and celebrating special occasions.
