Welcome Welcome to New Hall School’s inaugural STEM Evening for Girls in Years 9-12 We are extremely pleased to announce an exciting programme of events at New Hall School. These events are for all students at New Hall who may have an interest in any of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

STEM subjects are integral to the success of the global economy. In the UK, we are competing on a world stage against countries which have been pursuing the growth of STEM over an extended period of time. Like many other developed countries, however, our young people are increasingly disengaged from STEM subjects which manifests itself in a reduced number of enrolments in courses in those STEM subjects which are critical to our future economic growth.

One challenge for STEM teaching is to help young people recognise how the science, design & technology, computer science, engineering and mathematics that they study at school can lead to rich and varied career pathways. This evening, we hope, will inspire our young ladies and enable them to discover some of the incredible opportunities which arise from studying these subjects.

We are delighted that so many professionals from Science and Industry, many of whom are friends, parents, governors and past students of New Hall, have agreed to attend this event to speak to our students during the course of the evening and we would like to thank them sincerely for their support and contribution.

The speaker’s profiles can be found within the brochure.

As well as the opportunity to talk to professionals about their careers, there will be opportunities for some hands on activities which we hope that the girls will enjoy.

Janet Roadway

Technical Support Manager ABB Low Voltage Products

Professional Profile

Janet has over 30 years’ experience within the electrical engineering industry, based around low voltage switchgear and domestic and commercial electrical appliance manufacturing. Experience includes operating and managing a short circuit testing station, managing a laboratory which life-tests domestic appliances such as kettles and toasters, designing electronic control boards and writing software for vending machines.

For the last 12 years Janet has been involved in providing educational and technical seminars to electrical consultants and major electrical contractors in the use of low voltage switchgear for their Continuing Professional Development (CPD), which is a requirement for obtaining and maintaining their engineer status within the Instituion of Engineering and Technology (IET).

For the last 19 years, Janet has worked for ABB Low Voltage Products - a major global manufacturer of low voltage switchgear, in a technical support and product management role.

Current Role Janet’s current role is that of a manager to the Technical Support team, which provides technical support for over 4000 product lines of electrical products, such as circuit breakers, switches and control gear to specifiers, installers and end users.

Skills and Experience

Particular skills include knowledge of modern switchgear technology and its application within the building services sector. Janet is experienced in face to face contact with customers in a technical role and has marketing and management skills and qualifications.

During her current employment, Janet has had the privilege of working on projects as diverse as British naval vessels, large data centers for multi-national banks, hospitals, schools and major infrastructure projects, such as the UK Olympic venues with some of the UK’s largest electrical consultants and contractors.

Dr Esther Norton

Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering Anglia Ruskin University

Professional Profile

Esther studied Civil and Environmental Engineering at Newcastle University and then carried out a doctorate in Geotechnical Engineering at Sheffield University. She worked for many years at a civil engineering academic in a university in the North of Chile where she carried out research into soil liquefaction and landfill sites in arid areas. She now works as a senior lecturer in civil engineering at Anglia Ruskin University where she teaches Mathematics, geotechnics and hydraulics on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Lydia Hyde, MPhys, MIoP Higher Research Scientist

Having gained a Masters in Physics degree, Lydia is now a Higher Research Scientist, focusing on developing sensor technology. She technically contributes to projects through design, test, programming and building demonstrators, and holds three patents. In addition, she is experienced in managing bids and projects, including a project with over 20 staff. She has presented to a variety of audiences including a lecture to over 60 customers on the topic of ‘Smart Dust’. Lydia is a Member of the Institute of Physics.

Andy Higgs

Professional Profile

Andy Higgs is a project manager for KIM Software, a small IT company based in Hertfordshire that supplies software for primarily public sector organisations such as local authorities and the emergency services. He is a qualified practitioner in PRINCE2 project management methodology and is certified in ITIL Foundation V3 and uses these qualifications to work on projects that introduce the latest computer technologies into front line emergency services work.

Andy is also an Ambassador for the Bloodhound SSC (Super Sonic Car) project as well as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Ambassador.

The Bloodhound SSC project is designed to inspire a generation of new scientists and engineers by breaking the FIA World Land Speed Record by the biggest margin in its history using the world’s first 1000mph car. Powered by Jet and Rocket engines, this engineering adventure is completely open, allowing students of all ages to follow the project in great depth. Andy is one of a large team of ambassadors who run events and presentations at schools and colleges to drive interest in the STEM subjects.

Dr Steven Noble

Head of Department: Mathematical Sciences Brunel University

Professional Profile

My job involves a mixture of teaching, administration and research. For a few years I have taught our first year Calculus course. Calculus is a fundamental part of mathematics, which you will start to see in A level mathematics. It is essentially the mathematics of change and allows us to formulate and solve equations for global temperatures, share prices and river levels. I also lead two first year tutor groups in which we are currently working on the Google PageRank algorithm, and final year projects which can cover anything from determining which teams can still win the Premier League to how many phone calls a group of friends must make to spread all their gossip.

Career to date

I studied at New College, Oxford for a BA in Mathematics and then stayed in Oxford to complete a D. Phil (the Oxford name for a PhD) on the Complexity of Graph Polynomials. After that I stayed in Oxford for one more year as a temporary lecturer, before moving to Brunel as a lecturer in 1998. In 2010 I was promoted to Senior Lecturer and then to Head of Department in 2012. I was admissions tutor for Mathematical Sciences at Brunel from 1999 to 2006 and First Year Co-ordinator from 2008 to 2012. Between 2006 and 2008, I was seconded to a research institute at the University of Bristol.

As Head of Department, administration is a big part of my job. I manage the 30 academic staff in the department and decide everyone’s responsibilities and workload. I represent the department at university meetings and help determine the future direction of the department, for example, which courses we will run, which people we will employ and the grades we will require from applicants.

My research is in Combinatorics, which is an area of pure mathematics. I am particularly interested in a mathematical structure called the Tutte polynomial, which appeals to me because it links together many different parts of science including physics, probability, timetabling and the mathematics of knots, and includes the famous problem of colouring the countries of a map with the fewest possible colours, so that adjacent countries get different colours.

Dr Lela Koulouri

Part-time Lecturer - The Department of Computing Brunel University

Professional Profile

My research focuses on spoken dialogue systems and human-computer interaction, looking at how people can interact with devices and applications in more natural, effective and enjoyable ways.

During my academic career, I have been involved in many exciting projects. For my MSc project at UCL, I developed a ‘smart room’ system which could recognise free-flowing, conversational speech. Later, I joined the computing department at Brunel University to pursue a PhD degree.

This work explored how different people talk and collaborate with computer systems. More recently, I have contributed to a research project, in which users could control and interact with robots through Twitter messages.

In addition to research, teaching has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

I have taught various modules and students of various levels and orientations (computing or business). But, admittedly, the subject that I find most enjoyable – and challenging – to teach is programming. Indeed, the Introductory Programming and Group Project modules offered to first-year students in Computing at Brunel are quite unique. Unlike my own ‘first programming experience’, our students learn programming not just by typing commands on a monitor, but by writing richly interactive programmes for a real robot. By the end of the year, students are able to programme their robots to perform amazing feats, like autonomously navigating through obstacles and tunnels.

Jo Smith

MA/MEng (Hons) CEng MIStructE Senior Structural Engineer

Professional Profile

Jo graduated from Cambridge University in 2001 and started her Structural Engineering career with David Dexter Associates.

Jo has worked on a large variety of projects in all major engineering materials but mainly specialising in concrete frame design. Jo has undertaken the detailed design of a number of concrete frames (including post tension frames) for example GWQ a 26 storey tower (residential) in Brentford and the Cobiax (Bubbledeck) slab solution for both Skelmersdale and Ormskirk College in Manchester and the Information Centre, Sheffield University.

Current Projects

Jo is currently working on the ÂŁ50million Ham Yard Development, designing the seven storey hotel with a two storey basement and working closely with the framing contractors with regular site visits.

Professional Experience

Jo’s portfolio of works also include; the Cutty Sark Visitors Centre, the Doha Showcase Stadium, renovation of the London Aquarium in the listed County Hall and the National Assembly for Wales, which included undertaking blast load analysis.

Valerie Shaikly

Professional Profile

Valerie graduted from York University with a First degree in Biological Sciences. She began embryology training in 1990 at the Hammersmith Hospital under the guidance of the now Lord Winston.

Whilst working at various clinics as a Senior Embryologist, Valerie completed a Masters degree in Health Promotion of Infertility at the University of London, followed by a PhD in Reproductive Immunology at the University of Essex.

More recently, Valerie has gained fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists, where she acts as an examiner and fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science.

Valerie serves on the Continuing Professional Development committee for the Association of Clinical Embryologists and the Development of Curriculum for Reproductive Science as part of the Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) programme.

Valerie is currently working at Bourn Hall Clinic in Colchester and Cambridge, and the Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre in London.

Fiona Marriage

Skills Manager Essex County Council Employability & Skills Unit

Professional Profile

Fiona qualified as a Careers Officer in 1990 and spent ten years working in schools in Tower Hamlets and five other East London Boroughs.

In 2000, she took up the post as Regional Manager for Careers Essex, the organisation which, at the time, was responsible for the delivery of careers education and guidance across Essex, Southend and Thurrock.

Fiona has been in her current role as a Skills Manager at Essex County Council since 2011. She is responsible for the delivery of the Essex County Council Education Industry STEM Project. This project aims to encourage more young people to pursue careers in STEM-based industries.

The STEM project is currently being delivered to 12 schools and will be extended to a further six schools in the next academic year. The success of the project is reliant on the support of local industry. The focus of her role is to recruit industry STEM professionals to work in partnership with schools in order to deliver industry led projects, offer work experience and host industrial visits.

Katie Murdoch

Professional Profile

Katie completed her A Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Geography in 2002 and went to Cambridge University to study a BA in Geography.

Katie successfully gained a place on the Essex & Suffolk Water (Northumbrian Water Limited) Graduate scheme and started on a two year programme in January 2006. She has worked there in a variety of different roles, most recently as a Construction Project Manager.

In 2008, Katie took a nine month sabbatical from her role to go back to fulltime study to gain an MSc in Civil Engineering. She has been a graduate member of the Institute for Civil Engineering, with whom she hopes to become chartered within the next few years.

Kay worked for three years on-site, commissioning water treatment plants. She spent a couple of years in Africa as a volunteer and has also had a brief role in the telecoms industry.

Since then, Kay has been a Project Manager within the water industry. She now works part-time for Essex & Suffolk Water at the Head Office in East Hanningfield.

After her A-levels, she decided to do an Apprenticeship instead of going to university as she wanted to have the chance to learn a variety of new tasks and be able to do both practical and theoretical work.

She is now in the second year of her apprenticeship at e2v and has started her final placement. The placement she is working in is Radio Frequency Power Solutions. Within this placement, she is working on magnetrons that are a part of the radio therapy equipment. The jobs Rebecca carries out are: helping with the major development of the products, testing the products and dealing with customers.

Neil led a Warranty Task Force, championing a dispersed team to reduce warranty costs resulting in a $3m saving and a significantly improved relationship which contributed to the sourcing of the Jaguar/Land Rover Cluster Business worth €3.8m.

Rachel trained for a six-partner firm of accountants in North London where clients included small and medium-sized, Londonbased companies such as Rotary Watches Ltd and an arms manufacturer.

She then moved to work for KPMG in their Ipswich office, specialising in owner-managed companies and not-for-profit sectors e.g. housing associations and co-operative societies.

After this, Rachel moved to a two-partner firm in Colchester, where she also undertook a qualification with the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) to advise on tax as well as accounting and auditing issues.

For the last 11 years, Rachel has been working at Whittle & Co as a manager and then as a Partner. During this time, she has gained a qualification with the Society of Trusts and Estates Practitioners (STEP) and has also been joint chair of the local CIOT..

Rachel is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Tax Advisor and Trusts and Estates Practitioner in a three-partner firm of accountants based in Colchester, Essex.

She advises a variety of clients, including corporate, charity and personal clients based in East Anglia and London specialising particularly in financial services and charity sectors.

Rachel’s job role encompasses not only accountancy advice and compliance but also statutory audit and tax planning and compliance. No two days are ever the same and it is a fulfilling and challenging career.

Alan Roscoe is a Conservation Lecturer at Writtle College. He enjoys teaching both undergraduates and post-graduates on all issues relating to conservation including ecology, habitat management and surveying.

Alan left his job in the city in 2003 for a more interesting life and is now active in a number of national and local conservation groups and holds licences for protected species. His particular research interest is the ecology and significance of brownfield sites.

This term, there will be a careers seminar taking place every Wednesday at 4.45pm—5.45pm in the Eaton Theatre and North Room. These seminars will feature different guest speakers who will give advice and information on their particular field.
