Preparation for University Programme Introduction Dear students, Netflix and Fifa may be two ways of passing time, but when this period of ‘stay at home’ is over (in whatever form it is ‘over’), we all need to answer the question, ‘What did we do with the time?’

Year 13 students across the country at other centres are being encouraged, like you, to look up the reading list and course modules which feature in the first year at their firm and insurance choice universities. I strongly encourage you again to be proactive and make a start on your own preparation. Not only does this have obvious benefits for your own academic ambitions, but also it can help with your own sense of wellbeing and purpose. It could well be that the initial period at university could involve online learning anyway, so why not get a head-start now?

You will already have been presented by your tutors in PSHEE with all sorts of resources and ideas about what you can do to prepare yourself for your next step, whether your plans are clear or unclear at the moment. This booklet is the gateway to further support being offered by departments and staff for you, and looks to facilitate your own preparation, but you must take the initiative to get the greatest benefit from it.

Regardless of your future plans, the ability to extend yourself and research independently into your interests is an invaluable skill. Whatever choice you make now, whether to embrace this as an opportunity to develop yourself, or to ignore it, is up to you. So, what will you say in answer to the question, ‘What did you do with your time?’

Preparation for University Programme

For the rest of the Trinity Term, university preparation tasks will be set for you based on the courses that you have applied to. These have been designed by departments to help prepare you for the next stage in your education and will help you to start on the front foot when your courses begin.

The PSHE programme will also continue. It has been redesigned to complement the pre-University programme by helping you prepare for the exciting but perhaps unfamiliar change to University life. In general, it will involve exploring what other opportunities exist to widen and enrich your understanding of your chosen areas, the transition to living away from home amongst new people, study skills and life goals - in addition to specific topics such as student finance, safety and wellbeing.

If you are not opting to study at university, or are planning to study a subject not on this list, please contact Mr Kiddell who will direct you to the work that will best support the next stage of your education. Please note that work aimed to support those taking apprenticeships or entering straight into the workplace has also been included.

If you are still uncertain about your choice of subject and were thinking of changing over the summer through clearing, this is an opportunity to look at the work in other areas and to help confirm your choices. In this case, please attempt the work in all subjects that you were considering.

How will the programme work?

The programme will feature a mix of independent study, teacher-led sessions and individual support.

In all subjects, a range of tasks to prepare for university study have been posted on Firefly. In each subject, there will also be at least two directed lessons each week where teachers will run sessions to support you through this work. The timings of these lessons will be made clear on the Firefly pages for each subject. Please also be aware that although formal lessons will no longer be taking place, your current teachers will continue to be available to you, during the normal lesson times, for any support that you need if you are studying a related subject area.

How do I sign up to take a subject?

If you are intending to begin the University preparation work in a subject, please make sure you email the named contact below, so they are aware and they will then add you to their directed sessions.

Pastoral Care & PSHEE Tutors will continue to keep in touch with you whilst the pre-University programme is running.

They will try to call you during morning registration calls, and follow up with you through the week merely to check that everything is okay and to address any concerns you may have.

The Horizons programme will continue, with a lecture to be recommended to you each week.
