Preparation for A Level Programme Introduction In these extraordinary times that we face, all staff at New Hall continue to offer support to you as best we can. I understand that the series of assessments you have faced recently has been challenging, and I would congratulate you for your perseverance and focus. A key component of the support that we can now offer you is a degree of structure and focus towards your academic future for next year. I hope that you will embrace the opportunity to undertake some work towards what you will face next year, whether you are planning to come into the Sixth Form here at New Hall or not, or even if your plans are currently uncertain. Although taking a rest now is surely important, to do nothing towards your future plans in the months that follow would seem to me to be unwise not only academically, but also from a wellbeing perspective; having a focus and a connection should help on both fronts. In light of this the staff at School have been developing a meaningful programme of academic support for you and this booklet outlines the core components of this. We would not have put this together, if we did not believe in its benefits for you. A Level preparatory work can commence from this month and I would therefore encourage you to engage with what is on offer this term from departments whose subjects you may be studying next year. Preparation for A Level Programme
From Monday 21 June 2021 until the end of term on Friday 16 July 2021, you will be able to access our Pre A-Level programme that consists of timetabled lessons to help prepare you for your chosen A Level courses. Please be aware that in the majority of cases, this work will include content from the first units of the actual A Level courses. You are therefore advised to complete the work for those subjects that you are intending to study at A Level.
PSHEE & Horizons
If you are not opting to take A Levels, or are planning to study subjects not on this list, please contact your tutor who will direct you to the work that will best support the next stage of your education. If you are still uncertain about your subject choices, this is an opportunity to look at the work and attend timetabled lessons to help confirm the choices you have submitted. In this case, please attempt the work and attend lessons in all subjects that you were considering.
How will the programme work? The Pre A-Level programme will be delivered remotely via Microsoft Teams and Firefly. You will not be required to attend School in person from Monday 21 June 2021, although this remains an option for those families who require this.
How do I sign up to take a subject? You are required to sign up via Firefly for the sessions you plan to attend each week and a Firefly Task has been sent to you that you will need to complete so that staff are aware of the sessions you will be attending. If you attend site from Monday 21 June, you will be required to sign in and out at the attendance office on your arrival and departure each day. Boarders will continue to register with their Head of Boarding.
Extended Project Qualification Please also be aware that we have now launched the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). If you completed the HPQ or are already familiar with the format of the EPQ, you may wish to begin thinking about the topic you wish to research and the question you wish to set. Please be aware that the EPQ must be on an area that is not directly covered within your normal A Level curriculum. As such, it is worth checking any chosen topics with the relevant contact below, before you invest too much time in any research. In Sixth Form once a week a double period (Thursday) is given over to our PSHEE provision, typically a PSHEE lesson with your tutor (or other member of staff) and then a lesson dedicated to a visiting speaker as part of our Horizons programme. Recent sessions have explored a diverse set of issues, including: the dangers of gambling; mindfulness; personal finances (debt, credit, interest, how funding support works for university etc.); sexism, sexual harassment and abuse; wellbeing and managing stress; pornography and its effect on relationships; healthy and respectful relationships; effective personal statements; bullying (at school and work); preparing for starting university; A Level Mindset (revision).
