Preparation for A Level Programme Introduction In these extraordinary times that we are currently facing, all staff at New Hall wish you and your families well and we are here to support you as best we can. A key component of the support that we can offer you is the maintenance of a structure and focus towards your academic future for next year. I hope that you will embrace the opportunity to undertake some work towards what you will face next year, whether you are planning to come into the Sixth Form here at New Hall or not, or even if your plans are currently uncertain.

To do nothing towards your future plans in the months that follow would seem to me to be unwise not only academically, but also from a wellbeing perspective; having a focus and a connection should help on both fronts. In light of this the staff at School have been developing a meaningful programme of academic support for you and this booklet outlines the core components of this. We would not have put this together, if we did not believe in its benefits for you.

A key factor in a successful move for students from Year 11 into Year 12 is the attitude they adopt towards their studies in particular and their behaviour in general. The more quickly and consistently you can do this, the more effective the start you will most likely make in your next stage of education and life. Taking greater responsibility for what is a huge investment by you (and your families) is surely a sign of maturity and really creates a positive impression as a start to your A Level courses.

Such an investment now can pay handsome dividends next year.

A Level preparatory work can commence from this May and I would therefore encourage you strongly to engage with what is on offer this term from departments whose subjects you may be studying next year. I wish you all well.

Preparation for A Level Programme

For the rest of the Trinity Term, A Level preparation tasks will be set for you in all subjects. Please be aware that in the majority of cases, this work will include content from the first units of the actual A Level courses. You are therefore advised to complete the work for those subjects that you are intending to study at A Level.

Pastoral Care & PSHEE

If you are not opting to take A Levels, or are planning to study subjects not on this list, please contact your tutor who will direct you to the work that will best support the next stage of your education.

Year 11 Trinity Term PSHEE Topics

You will continue to meet your Tutor regularly to review your progress, to pray together as a group and to follow the Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) programme.

If you are still uncertain about your subject choices, this is an opportunity to look at the work and to help confirm the choices you have submitted. In this case, please attempt the work in all subjects that you were considering.

How will the programme work?

In this unit of work, you will learn...

The programme will feature a mix of independent study, teacher-led sessions and individual support.

In all subjects, a range of tasks to prepare for, and to begin, A Level study have been posted on Firefly. In each subject, there will also be at least two directed lessons each week where teachers will lead sessions to support you through this work. The timings of these lessons will be made clear on the Firefly pages for each subject. Please also be aware that although formal lessons will no longer be taking place, your current teachers will continue to be available to you, during the normal lesson times, for any support that you need if you are studying their subjects. The teachers of the Sixth Form only subjects will make clear the times that they will be available for any additional support.

How do I sign up to take a subject?

If you are intending to begin the A Level preparation work in a subject, please make sure you email the named contact below, so they are aware and they will then add you to their directed sessions.

Extended Project Qualification Please also be aware that from Monday 11 May, following the assessment fortnight, we will be launching the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) early. If you completed the HPQ or are already familiar with the format of the EPQ, you may wish to begin thinking about the topic you wish to research and the question you wish to set. Please be aware that the EPQ must be on an area that is not directly covered within your normal A Level curriculum. As such, it is worth checking any chosen topics with the relevant contact below, before you invest too much time in any research.
