How much time do I need to spend per week in the subject?

A solid 4 hours or so of study per week, concentrating upon a variety of objectives, should ensure that each candidate meets with a good deal of success.

How much academic weight does an A Level carry in Art and Design?

Apart from a minority of courses such as Medicine, an A Level in Art and Design certainly counts as a relevant A Level within a choice of three subjects. The Russell Group of universities has scrapped the previous list of ‘facilitating’ subjects in favour of more subtle, balanced and bespoke guidance per subject. In recent years, our Art and Design students have accessed robust degree courses in areas such as English, Philosophy, Psychology, Law and Politics, Criminology and Economics, alongside the other creative routes.

How relevant will my experience at GCSE be with regards to being successful at A Level?

A Level contains the same exact four assessment objectives as at GCSE Level. Therefore, working hard and following advice at GCSE Level will serve as the very best preparation. A new theme does not necessarily usher in improvements compared to how one has fared at GCSE, as thematic titles are so broad in nature anyway. Doing Art and Design requires a good level of independent thinking as it is not a didactic, text-book based course. The particular new dimension at A Level, compared to GCSE, is the undertaking of a written study upon one’s own selected artists.

FAQs Is it possible to study both subjects at A Level?

Yes, it is possible. It can be important to remember that both Art and Photography fall under the generic qualification of Art and Design and therefore some institutions will regard the two subjects as the same qualification. However, genuine enthusiasts who will want to proceed to art college will find that a doubling up re-creates a college style experience in the Sixth Form.

Do I get a permanent workspace?

We would hope so, depending on the intake. Presently, we can offer up to 12 individual workspaces for Year 12 and up to about 18 in Year 13. Photography students will enjoy permanent access to a desktop computer.

FAQs How is the course taught?

The course is taught in parallel and evenly split between teachers. This means that you will have one teacher for half of your lessons (roughly 3 a week) and another teacher for the other half of your lessons (roughly 3 a week). The course is a linear, two-year course.

What are the entry requirements?

At least a strong Grade 6 in GCSE Biology or in the Biology component of the Double Award science GCSE. At least a Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics.

(Ideally a Grade 6 in an essay-based subject at GCSE.) What content is on the course?

AQA , A Level Biology How much maths and chemistry are involved?

The mathematical component of the course is worth 10% of the final A Level grade. You will be required to calculate the mean, median, mode and range, as well as the standard deviation. You will also need to calculate statistical tests by hand. Therefore, mathematical skills are crucial.

There is an expectation that you will have prior knowledge and a good understanding of chemistry and bonding and the first topic is Biochemistry.

Do you have a chance to conduct your own research?

Yes! At the end of every topic you will have a chance to carry out your own psychological investigation using other Sixth Form students as your research participants.

What skills do you develop?

You develop a variety of skills in Biology including practical manipulative skills.

Other skills include: reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving, analysis, application, numeracy. You also learn how to structure essays and generate a line of argument, as well as come to well-justified and balanced, conclusions.

What can you go onto do if you study Biology A level/as a degree?

How are the A Level papers laid out?

A group of Year 13 students were asked, “what would have been helpful advice before starting Biology in Year 12?”. Below are their responses: 1) “Make consolidation notes immediately after the lesson or at the end of the day, especially for the classic and contemporary studies in each topic”.

2) “Consolidate your work as you go through the course, don’t leave all your note making and practice essays to the end of Year 12”.

3) “Remember that there are folder checks where the teachers check your folders. Therefore, you must ensure your notes are up to date, your class worksheets are all completed, your assessments have been improved and you have evidence of consolidation work”.

Are there any opportunities for extra clubs?

Are there opportunities for extra clubs?

Yes! Every week the Biology teachers run a revision club where students can consolidate lesson content and practice examination skills. Further, there is a lunchtime opportunity for students to ‘drop-in’ and ask their teachers any particular questions they may have. Also, Biology Society runs each week where students are given the opportunity to present topics they have researched which are beyond the Biology specification.

How much independent study is there?

Like all A Level subjects, there is an expectation that students spend at least 6 hours per week consolidating their Biology work. Consolidation can take the form of: practice essay questions or essay plans, practice examination questions, reading through examiner reports and mark schemes, making notes, creating mind-maps, making summary sheets or posters, making notecards, and more!

FAQs What will we learn?

A Level Business is all about decision making. We look at the decisions made by business leaders when running large and small businesses and how the external environment can affect the decisions that are made. In the first year, we mainly study the main functional areas of business – marketing, finance, HR and operations. In the second year, we expand our perspective to consider the bigger strategic issues such as growth, innovation and change. The examination and the majority of the lessons are based on real-life business contexts and will ask students to reflect on the issues impacting modern businesses and to solve the problems with which are presented.

Which examination board do you follow?

We follow the AQA specification.

How will I be assessed?

There are 3 papers at the end of the two years. The papers contain a range of different types of questions from multiple choice and short answer to longer evaluative questions. All of the questions relate to case study scenarios and test the skill of application. Some of the questions will test quantitative skills.

The most important thing is to have a genuine interest in the business environment. Students are expected to have an awareness of changes in the business environment and the actions that are being taken by businesses. Students should be able to form and write a balanced argument, think critically and be able to apply theory to a given case study context. Numerical skills are also important and make up around 10% of the final marks.

Students beginning the course in Year 12 are not expected to have studied Business previously.

Students are expected to have a level of numerical skill and also to be able to write a coherent, logical and balanced argument.

What are the subject results from previous years?

We consistently achieve results well above the national average and above similar schools. This summer, 55% of students achieved an A* or an A in the subject which compares to 53% of students last year. This compares to just 19% A*-A grades being achieved in similar centres to ours.

What progression is there after A Level Business?

45% of students from last year’s Business classes went on to study a business related discipline at university. A Level Business is particularly useful for students wishing to study the following at university level: Business Management, Marketing, Finance and Accounting, Events Management and Business Law. Business can be a useful choice for a wide range of careers and can be combined with a wide range of other subjects. Many students’ also successfully secure apprenticeship and employment opportunities.

What co-curricular opportunities do you offer?

On a weekly basis we run a lively Business Society which gives students the chance to discuss and debate current issues and their impact on various businesses. We regularly hold talks from experienced and successful business people as well as visiting business environments locally and globally. We have been successful in many competitions in the past, for example, last year 3 of our students won the Aspirations in Business Event which was held at Felsted. This year, we are taking part in a trading simulation experience which will give students the opportunity to participate in a simplified version of a simulation used to train graduate hires at many investment banks.

Which subjects compliment Business?

Business covers such a broad range of topics and therefore it compliments every other A Level subject. Commonly students in the class tend to be studying Politics, Theology, Psychology, Geography and Mathematics.

What is the difference between Business and Economics?

There is some crossover between the two subjects but they analyse issues from different perspectives.

For example, both subjects look at interest rates. In Economics students will study what interest rates are, why they are set, how they are set and the impact this will have on the wider economy. In Business we focus much more on how a change in interest rates affects different businesses and how a business can respond to this.

How do I know how I am getting on?

We will set practice questions at the end of each chapter and you will have end of chapter tests which are recorded on a progress spreadsheet. Students can check their progress as this forms the major part of UCAS predicted grades at the end of the first year.

What were the grades like last year?

Typically we aim for and achieve over 75% A* to C and our value added is in line with expectations.

FAQs How is the course assessed?

The course is OCR. There are 3 papers at the end of the course and practical work but this does not form part of the assessment.

How is the course structured?

Students study Physical, inorganic and organic topics spread throughout the course. Each group has a main teacher for most lessons, including practical work and two lessons each week with other teachers in the department.

What is the minimum GCSE grade that I need and Is Combined science ok?

We prefer students to reach a grade 7.

Combined Science is fine but you should really be aiming for an 8 or 9.

Is there much practical work?

There is a lot of practical work! You should be completing and writing up work most weeks.

FAQs What is A Level Computer Science all about?

The course is split into two complementary sections, Programming and Theory. On the programming side of the course, students will learn the fundamentals of programming, data structures, algorithms, procedural and object-oriented programming using VB.NET. They will also learn how to go about breaking down a big problem into individual programmable steps. The theory side of the course teaches about the internal workings of a computer, right down to the basics of how all data is stored in a computer using binary, whether that data consists of numbers, text, pictures or even sound. It goes on from there to cover aspects of computer architecture, showing exactly how data is accessed from main memory using assembly language instructions and the fetch-execute cycle. This unit will also cover higher order thinking concepts such as the social and legal opportunities and impacts of digital technology. A digital textbook will be issued to each student. This can be used on their tablet, computer or phone. Students will be able to make additional notes on their copy of the digital book. An additional recommended reading list will be provided prior to the start of the course.

What are the pre-requisites to study the course?

It is not essential to have studied Computer Science at GCSE to do A Level Computer Science. Though it is advisable to have done some practice of programming in their own 16

time. The course has a significant programming element and although we start from the basics, some students may find it challenging if insufficient practice is completed. Students will need to have a Grade 6 in GCSE Computer Science and Mathematics, or a Grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics and a Grade 6 in a science subject at GCSE. There are several topics that require the ability to reason logically and apply Mathematical and logical processes to solutions. It is likely that if a student finds mathematics enjoyable and interesting, then they will also like Computer Science.

How will a student be assessed?

The awarding body we use is AQA. The assessment consists of two exam papers, both worth 40%, plus a non-exam assessment that is worth 20%; the non-exam assessment will typically be completed over a period of five months. The first examination is an on-screen programming examination.

This will test students’ ability to solve problems as much as it will test their theoretical knowledge of the programming concepts they have learnt. The second examination is a traditional written examination, focused on the theoretical aspect of the course. Questions are designed to test their knowledge and ability to apply their understanding of computer systems, how they are formed, the social and legal parts of computing, communication, networking and databases. Students are expected to start a Non-Examination Assessment towards the end of the first year of the course.

This will consist of an implemented programmed solution and a documented report. Students will select their own project which must have a significant programming element. They could create a computer game, mobile phone application, simulation or even an e-commerce system. There is no restriction on the programming language used for the project, but students are expected to program in an object-oriented environment.

Where can it lead?

A Level Computer Science is the fourth science subject and as such is seen by universities as an excellent qualification to support any degree entry. After university, there are numerous interesting fields of study and professions that students can go progress on to. Computer Science can lead on to robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, big data processing, networking, ethical hacking and computer game development. The skills learnt can also be applied to almost any career, particularly banking, economics, law or even teaching. So much of the world uses computers nowadays that having a good understanding of how computers work and how to program them will set students up for success in many strands of life. Computers are also increasing in many developing countries, meaning that skills in computer science will be very portable. The most popular programming languages in the world are based on the English language, so studying Computer Science will give you a good foundation if you wish to travel and find a job working with computers in another country.

How many hours are taught a week and is additional support available?

New Hall has a two week timetable and within these two weeks students will have ten 55 minute lessons. In the first year of the course, lessons will focus on the content of the two examined units.

Lessons in the second year of the course will be split to cover the examined units, as well as the nonexam assessment. Additional support is available to students during lunch times. In the second year of the course, a series of revision days will be conducted prior to the final examination.

What are the results for the last couple of years?

Over the last two years, we have had 100% pass rate.

What plays do we study during the course?

Two plays are selected, each year, from two lists of set plays, which can be found at AQA’s website above. List A is called Drama Through The Ages and recent students have enjoyed exploring, practically, one of Shakespeare’s comedies, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. List B plays are from 20th century theatre. The plays are explored practically, as performance texts.

What do students go on to study after taking A Level Drama & Theatre?

Some go on to further education or training in Drama and theatre arts. Others pursue a range of subjects including English Literature, Politics, Law, Film Production and Psychology. Russell Group universities regard Drama very highly for applicants to Law and Politics. We have alumni who have gone to both drama schools and leading universities to pursue careers in the theatre, both on stage or in production. A leading UK practitioner our current students study, Alecky Blythe, is a New Hallian! We are strengthening links with leading Drama Schools and work with students to prepare them for audition and selection.

Do I need to have studied and passed GCSE Drama to take A Level Drama & Theatre?

Not necessarily, although we prefer students to have attained a Grade 6 in Drama. Achievement in English and experience or interest in drama, through extra-curricular or non-school activities are considered, if GCSE Drama has not been taken.

FAQs What examination board do you take for A Level Drama & Theatre?

We use the AQA Board and the code number is 7262. The end of course written examination is worth 40% of the A Level. It is in three sections covering two set plays and a live theatre evaluation based on one of the performances you will see during the course.

The practical components comprise of examined performances, worth 30% of the A Level and coursework (a working notebook and a reflective report) worth 30% of the A Level. You may enter for each practical component as a performer, director or designer.

What are the designer options available in the practical components?

We have offered sound and lighting design options in recent years. If you have a particular interest in other options – costume, make-up or set design – please let us know so we can discuss possibilities and plan accordingly.

FAQs What is Economics?

Economics is a social science that seeks to analyze and describe the production, distribution, and consumption of wealth. It focuses on economic choices and how we best allocate our scarce resources to meet unlimited needs and wants. Economics can be broken down into two broad areas; microeconomics and macroeconomics.

Microeconomics is the study of decision making at the level of the consumer and the producer. It analyses how markets allocate resources, why markets generally work well and also why they can fail and how government can intervene to improve the workings of markets. Microeconomics studies fascinating topics such as environmental economics, externalities, labour markets and business economics.

Macroeconomics on the other hand is the study of economics on a larger scale. It focuses on the study of the economy as a whole rather than individual markets and looks at topics such as economic growth, economic development, international trade, financial markets, inflation and employment. The focus of Year 1 macroeconomics is on the UK economy whilst in Year 2 the focus expands to consider the global economic outlook.

Do I need to have studied Economics at GCSE to take the subject at A Level?

No. We assume you have no prior knowledge of the subject when you begin to A Level Economics curriculum. You will begin with the very basics in Year 12 and build on this knowledge as you move through the specification.

What are the entry requirements?

Students will be required to achieve at least a strong Grade 5 in an essay-based subject and Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics (or their equivalent).

Is there much Maths involved?

Whilst Economics does require some mathematics, the mathematical skills students are expected to demonstrate at A Level for Economics will be achievable for most. If students have achieved a Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics, they should have the necessary mathematical skills required to fully access the subject.

As an economics student, you will be expected to be comfortable working with numbers and interpreting data. The key quantitative skills expected of an economics student involve being comfortable with percentages and percentage change, ratios, fractions, mean and median, calculating index numbers, calculating rates of change (eg. economic growth rates) and being able to construct and interpret data in a range of graphical forms. Questions which involve quantitative skills make up approximately 20% of your overall marks on the papers.

How is the subject assessed?

The A Level is structured into four themes with three externally assessed examinations taken at the end of Year 13. Each written paper is two hours long.

The four themes are as follows: • Theme 1 – Introduction to markets and market failure (inc. government intervention) • Theme 2 – The UK economy – performance and policies (inc. growth, employment, inflation and macroeconomic policy) • Theme 3 – Business behaviour and the labour market (inc. business growth and market structures) • Theme 4 – A global perspective (inc. international economics, economic development and the financial sector) The specification taught is Edexcel Economics A (9EC0).

With what subjects does Economics work well?

Economics is an incredibly diverse subjects works well with a lot of other subjects. It is often paired with Mathematics which serves as an excellent combination.

Likewise, as it is a social science, Economics also works well with other social sciences such as Psychology and the humanities subjects such as History and Geography. Many of our economics students also study subjects such as Politics, Theology and Ethics, particularly those who have the intention of studying PPE at university.

It is also common for our economists to study Science subjects such as Physics, Biology and Chemistry. Please note, it is not generally advised to study Business and Economics in combination as some universities such as LSE see this combination as too narrow.

What are the co-curricular opportunities for A Level Economics students?

The Economics Department offers a wide and varied co-curricular programme. Students are encouraged to attend the weekly Economics Affairs Society where students usually guest lecture on areas of interest.

There are also annual trips into London to attend the Annual Economics Student Conference and revision workshops. Students are also given a chance to go on a Business, Economics and Politics trip to New York and Washington bi-annually.

Students are actively encouraged and supported to enter national economics competitions such as the Institute of Economic Affairs Budget Challenge and the Financial Times Essay Competition.

What career opportunities are there for those that study Economics?

Economics is a subject highly valued amongst employers and universities alike. Average earnings and employment levels for Economics graduates are particularly high.

Its study can lead to careers in a broad range of areas such as Banking, Finance, Business, Consultancy, Law and Government Policy. Students intending to pursue a pure Economics degree at university are advised to take A Level Mathematics, although only 25% of Economics degrees require students to study A Level Mathematics.

Students have 2 or 3 teachers for English. One teacher will teach to the Paper 1 examination, while the second teacher teaches to Paper 2. Either one of these teachers or a third teacher will teach the content for the coursework.

How is A Level English Literature similar to or different from GCSE English?

There is some crossover between the Assessment Objectives for GCSE and A Level Literature.

AO1 requires students to present articulate, informed, personal, creative responses to literary texts, employing coherent, accurate written expression. As at GCSE level, AO2 asks students to focus on the close analysis of language and its impact. Also as at GCSE level, AO3 requires students to engage with contextual factors. It is worth noting that this is more heavily weighted at A-Level. AO4 at A Level requires students to make comparisons and connections between texts. The main difference between English Literature at GCSE and at A Level is that students are required to explore literary texts informed by different interpretations. This means that students will engage actively with what critics have said about the set texts and how different directors have staged productions, to help them develop the sophistication of their arguments.

How much study will be set per fortnight?

One significant study will be set per week. This could be an essay, or a reading or research task, in which students are asked to read and make notes on critical essays or on the contextual background to the set text.

Is there any coursework?

There is one piece of coursework in A Level Geography known as the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA). This comprises 20% of student’s final grade. Students will need to design a question and series of methods to investigate an area of geography linked to what they have learnt in Paper 1 or Paper 2. Students will then need to write up a report on this with an advised word count of 3,000-4,000 words.

Are there any trips?

We run a mixture of day and residential trips throughout the A Level course to ensure we fulfil the examination boards requirement of students completing a minimum of 4 days fieldwork.

The trips are designed to equip students with the required skills and knowledge to complete their NEA successfully as well as broadening their understanding of geographical fieldwork and content. The trips come as an additional cost.

To take A Level Geography you need to secure a Grade 6 in Geography at GCSE. It is also recommended that students have obtained a Grade 6 in GCSE English and Mathematics.

You will answer essay questions focussed on causation, consequence, significance, change and continuity. You will also analyse sources to make judgements about their utility and reliability. In the examinations you have 45 minutes to answer each of the different questions.

Is A Level History a lot harder than IGCSE? No. The skills you develop through studying IGCSE History prepare you very well for A Level History. The essays are structured in a very similar way, but with an extra paragraph and links explaining the inter-relationship between factors. Your skills of source interpretation (making inferences) will help you with the source questions. There is still a lot of information to remember, but if you are able to remember the information for IGCSE History, you will not have a problem remembering the information for A Level History.

Why should I choose to study Latin and/or Greek at A Level?

The opportunity to immerse yourself in the ancient world is a rare and valuable one - no other A Level subject offers you such a chance. A Level Latinists and Hellenists are empowered to explore the people, the myths, the poetry, the politics, and the bloody history of the Romans and Greeks in great depth, and in so doing they develop skills that will ever allow them to excel, in both academic and professional settings.

How does study at A Level differ from GCSE? The A Level course for both Latin and Greek is divided into language and literature components, in the same way as the GCSE equivalents.

With the language, you will develop your expertise so that you can translate original ancient texts into mellifluous English, having learned the basics at GCSE. Added to that, you will now have the chance to learn how to compose Latin and Greek prose.

The set texts are greater in their extent than their GCSE counterparts, and this will allow you to investigate their context, their artistry, and their influence in much greater depth.

How will studying Classics at A Level affect my options for study at university?

A Levels in Latin and Greek are amongst the most respected qualifications a student can attain.

Success herein illustrates to any admissions tutor that you are a serious academic, with: • excellent analytical and communication skills honed in a uniquely specialized environment; • an appetite for nuance and detail, as well as the ability to construct persuasive arguments on themes literary, historical, and philosophical; • knowledge and understanding of the ancient world, its history, its literature, and the legacies that each has bequeathed to us today, which very few rival applicants can boast.

Many students of A Level Latin and/or Greek go on to study Classics at university, but the above traits are attractive no matter the discipline you wish to consider. Rather than limiting your options at university to Classics, the study of Latin and Greek allows future students of History, Mathematics, Modern Languages, English literature, Theology, et al. to stand out from their respective crowds.

What careers are available to a Classicist?

While each of your Latin and Greek teachers at New Hall studied Classics at university, the majority of Classics graduates move into other high-powered sectors. Whether it is a career in law, finance, politics, or any other area that your ambitions may take you, a qualification in the Classics demonstrates that you have traits and capabilities which are sought-after and highly-valued by employers.

How big are the classes?

Naturally, A Level classes are small - the current Y12 Latin class has 7 students, and the equivalent in Greek has 3 – and this is a good thing. It ensures that teaching can be particular to the needs of individual students and that personalized feedback can be prioritized in lessons.

Are these essay subjects?

A Level students are tasked with writing commentaries on excerpts from their set texts, drawing on the skills that they have developed in their composition of answers to 8-mark GCSE questions.

They also construct essays in response to questions about the themes and context of the particular text. Naturally, these essays will be more sophisticated and nuanced than those written in Y11, but the experience gained at GCSE will be fundamental to success in this area of A Level study.

What are the set texts?

The Latin texts for examination in 2023 include Cicero’s Pro Cluentio and Catullus’ love poetry.

In Greek, you will have the chance to explore Plato’s examination of love in his Symposium and the dramatic fall of a great hero in Sophocles’ tragedy Ajax.

Co-curricular opportunities If restrictions allow, the Classics Department will lead a trip to Greece, visiting Athens, Delphi, Olympia, and Mycenae, in October 2021. There will be opportunities, too, to visit museums and other sites of interest, attend lectures, and to enter prestigious essay competitions.

FAQs How many students are in a class?

Typically, around 12-14 students for Mathematics and 8-10 for Further Mathematics but this does vary depending on the year.

What text books do you use?

We use interactive online texts through a platform called Pearson ActiveLearn. You will be given an account to access this when you start the course.

What can I do to prepare for the course?

You will be sent an induction pack during the summer before the course begins. This contains useful exercises on Higher level GCSE Mathematics to work on prior to starting the course.

Should I take Further Mathematics?

Further Mathematics is aimed at the very gifted mathematicians across the country and is not to be taken lightly. It requires a huge amount of work independently to complete 2 A levels in 2 years. It is usually only recommended to students who want to study mathematics at Oxbridge or certain engineering courses at some institutions. Check the entry requirements before making a decision.

Do you offer STEP/MAT classes?

Do I have to be a classical musician to take A-Level Music?

No – the course is open to students of all disciplines in more traditional and contemporary forms.

There are composing and performance routes in both of these areas. However, students will need a sound understanding of Music Theory, including harmony, chords and notation.

Do I need to have Grade 5 Music Theory?

You will be required to have a sound understanding of harmony and notation and so Grade 5 Music Theory would be an expectation (or the equivalent level of understanding). However, we can offer tuition in School if this area requires some attention and it need not be a barrier to taking the subject if you have not yet met this milestone.

Will I be expected to perform in a group?

Do I need to play an instrument to take A-Level Music?

In short, yes, but do not forget that your voice is an instrument. At New Hall, you will receive coaching and many informal opportunities to hone your skills. However, it is an expectation at this level for the student to perform comfortably and regularly. A-Level students will be working at Grade 6 standard (or the equivalent) and beyond. Performing is 25% or 35% of the course, depending on which route you choose.

Do I need to compose during the A-Level Music course?

Yes. This component is worth either 25% or 35% of the overall marks, depending on which route you choose. Around a third of the lesson time will be spent developing composition skills although, this need not be in notation form. Digital music-making is also possible and can be equally successful.

Is there an examination?

Yes. This is worth 40% of the overall marks. It contains a section on contextual understanding with listening extracts, and this seeks to test your aural skills. You will learn about four areas of study which you will also best tested on. The rest of the paper focusses on set works which change year to year. You will be required to have an in depth understanding of these 36

Mahatma Gandhi Politics exists because people disagree. They disagree about how they should live (moral questions), about who should get what (resource questions) and about who should make decisions (power questions). As an activity, politics is the process through which people with different ideas, values, opinions and interests attempt to find a way of living together within the same society. Politics therefore seeks to establish the general rules under which we live and it is those rules that make orderly existence possible. As such, politics is the most basic and necessary of social activities — without orderly existence, society will degenerate into a civil war of each against all.

Who should study Politics?

Who should study politics, and why? The short answer is that everyone should study politics — all members of society should have a better understanding of the general rules under which they live. For these rules to be effective, as many people as possible should actively participate in making them, upholding them and maybe, changing them. This is what is meant by ‘active citizenship’. A healthy society is a society in which many people participate in political activity and do so with insight and understanding. What makes politics different as an academic subject is its emphasis on debate, discussion and argument. If politics exists because people disagree studying politics must mean studying how, why and when people disagree and taking an interest in these disagreements. Politics is therefore particularly likely to suit students who: • have an interest in the world around them — ones who want to know more about the society they live in, how it works and how it could work • enjoy debate, discussion and argument — ones who are comfortable with the fact that in politics there are no simple ‘rights’ or ‘wrongs’ • like to think for themselves — ones who want to develop their own views, rather than accept the views of others.

Do I need to have a knowledge of current affairs or have studied certain subjects at GCSE to take the subject at A Level?

No. We assume you have no prior knowledge of the subject when you begin to A Level Politics curriculum. You will begin with the very basics in Year 12 and build on this knowledge as you move through the specification.

What are the entry requirements?

Students will be required to achieve a Grade 5 in an essay-based subject such as English or History.

What do we study in A Level Politics?

• UK Politics: Democracy and participation; Political parties; Electoral systems; Voting behaviour and the media.

• UK Government: The constitution; Parliament; Prime Minister and executive; Relationships between the branches.

• Core Political Ideas: Liberalism; Conservatism; Socialism.

Do students at New Hall perform well in A Level Politics?

The Politics Department has a history of outstanding examination results. Our students work hard and perform very highly. Please see our results below.

In 2014 A2 Politics achieved its best ever results at New Hall School in both A*/A A*-B scoring well above School and National averages.

In 2015 AS Politics achieved its best ever results at New Hall School A-B scoring well above School and National averages.

Since 2014 18 students have achieved the magic mark of 100% In 2016 Politics achieved the highest number of A*/A s with 84% achieving A*/B. This was far above school and national averages. This was an A level department with the second highest number of A level students.

2017-2018 Results have continued to perform well above school and national averages.

In 2019 New Hall Politics achieved 25% A* compared to 4% nationally in Politics and in 2020 92% grades A*/B, 63 % A*-A, 25% A*, 100% A*-C. These are outstanding results!

With what subjects does Politics work well?

Politics is the subject that links all other subjects together. Politics is an incredibly diverse subject and works well with a lot of other subjects. Politics works really well with other social sciences such as Economics, Business and Psychology as well as humanities subjects such as History and Geography. The skills found in Politics are very similar to those in Theology and Ethics and is particularly suited to those who have the intention of studying PPE at university. It is also common for our politics students to study Mathematics as well as subjects such as English, Latin, Greek and Biology.

How much biology is involved?

Psychology is a science and thus the study of the brain is vital. This means that we study biological psychology not only in the biological psychology module but also in Year 13 when we look at explanations and treatments for mental health disorders and criminal behaviour.

How much Mathematics is involved?

The mathematical component of the course is worth 10% of the final A Level grade. You will be required to calculate the mean, median, mode and range, as well as the standard deviation. You will also need to calculate statistical tests by hand. Therefore, mathematical skills are crucial.

How is the course taught?

Do you have a chance to conduct your own research?

The course is taught in parallel and evenly split between teachers. This means that you will have one teacher for half of your lessons (roughly 3 a week) and another teacher for the other half of your lessons (roughly 3 a week). The course is a linear, two-year course.

Yes! At the end of every topic you will have a chance to carry out your own psychological investigation using other Sixth Form students as your research participants.

What are the entry requirements?

• At least a strong Grade 6 in GCSE Biology or in the Biology component of the Double Award Science GCSE. • At least a Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.

• At least a Grade 5 in an essay-based subject at GCSE. What content is on the course?

In your first year you will study: research methods, issues and debates, cognitive psychology, social psychology, biological psychology and learning theories. In your second year, you will study: clinical psychology (schizophrenia and depression) and criminal psychology. In the second year you will continue to study research methods and issues and debates. Throughout each topic we will cover the following: 46

• Content: Explanations of certain human behaviours (e.g. social explanations of prejudice).

• Research methods: Ways of studying human behaviour (e.g. case studies of brain damaged patients).

• Issues and debates: How do the topics apply to Psychology’s big questions? (e.g. is schizophrenia due to Nature or Nurture?).

• Important studies: One classic (old) study and one contemporary (new) study per topic, as well as many studies for evaluation!

• Mathematics: Calculation of statistical tests, measures of central tendency, and measures of dispersion (e.g. Chi squared test of association/difference).

• Practical: Independent group practical research into the topic area (e.g. are males or females more obedient to authority?).

• Key question: Research an issue for contemporary society and write an essay on this (e.g. the consequences for society if aggression was found to be innate).

What skills do you develop?

You develop a variety of skills in Psychology. Skills include: reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving, analysis, application, numeracy. You also learn how to structure essays and generate a line of argument, as well as come to well-justified and balanced, conclusions.

What can you go onto do if you study Psychology A level/as a degree?

Jobs in Psychology related fields include; counselling, marketing, teaching, working with children with SEN, politics, and more! Following a Psychology degree, students can embark on a PHD if they would like to become a qualified psychologist e.g. a forensic psychologist, health psychologist or clinical psychologist. Further, if you would like to study Psychology at university, most institutions require that you have studied Psychology and/or Biology at A Level.

However, most Psychology students do not take these subjects! Students also find it compliments other essay-based subjects such as Politics, Theology and English. Psychology students take a wide range of subjects.

How are the A Level papers laid out?

How much independent study is there?

Like all A Level subjects, there is an expectation that students spend at least 5 hours per week consolidating their Psychology work. Consolidation can take the form of: practice essay questions or essay plans, practice examination questions, reading through examiner reports and mark schemes, making notes, creating mind-maps, making summary sheets or posters, making notecards, and more!

A group of year 13 students were asked, “what would have been helpful advice before starting Psychology in Year 12?”. Below are their responses: 1) “You need to remember to practise essays in timed conditions so that you are ready for class assessments. You should time yourself when you complete essays for homework”.

2) “Make consolidation notes immediately after the lesson or at the end of the day, especially for the classic and contemporary studies in each topic”.

3) “Consolidate your work as you go through the course, don’t leave all your note making and practice essays to the end of Year 12”.

4) “Remember that there are folder checks where the teachers check your folders. Therefore, you must ensure your notes are up to date, your class worksheets are all completed, your assessments have been improved and you have evidence of consolidation work”.

This is a chance to reinforce grammatical structures, complete reading within your own areas of interest and keep up-to-date with current affairs.

What is the difference between the Spanish A Level and the Diploma?

• The Spanish A Level is more academic, whereas the Spanish Diploma is more practical and based on real-life interactions and situations.

• The same grammar is covered in both courses.

• The Spanish Diploma does not include the study of a film, book or Spanish history but has four examinations that are similar to the style of GCSE (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing).

• The A Level is examined in May/June of Year 13 – the Diploma examinations can take place in November or May of Year 12 or Year 13, depending on when you are ready to sit the examinations.

What skills are required of a Theology A Level student?

You will be required to write essays. In the final examination, you will complete 20 mark explanatory essays (in 20 minutes) and 30 mark evaluative essays (in 40 minutes). Your study tasks throughout Y12 and Y13 will consist of essay writing and reading.

How will studying Theology at A Level benefit me in the future?

By studying Theology you will learn and develop invaluable skills such as textual analysis, argument formation, critical thinking, abstract thinking and evaluation. Yes, you have a sink in your room, but there are individual communal showers and toilets near your room on the corridor.

Yes, bedding is provided. You are welcome to bring your own bedding and personalise your bedroom.

Is there internet access in all rooms?

Yes, Wi-Fi and cable access from 6.00am - 11.30pm When is breakfast & dinner?

Morning bell goes at 7.00am, morning registration takes place at 7.25am – then straight into breakfast. Evening registration takes place at 6.00pm then straight into supper at 6.10pm.

Are boarders allowed back to the boarding house during the day?

Yes, in the senior boarding house students are allowed back to study in their rooms during the day if they have free periods.

Are boarders allowed off site on their own?

Yes, boarders are allowed in to Chelmsford and local shops at weekends and sometimes for special events mid-week. Sixth Form students are allowed into London with parental permission.

What leadership opportunities are there?

In House we have a Prefect group who assist in running the House.

Do all the students need to go to Chapel?

We have Mass at 7.00pm on a Sunday evening all full boarders are expected to attend. We obviously know not all students are Roman Catholic we ask that all students respect the Christian ethos of the School. We also have morning and evening prayers at House registration to start the day and finish the day with some reflection.

What activities take place in Dennett and Campion?

Dennett and Campion run an extensive activities programme. Weekday activities are generally on site with Campion & Dennett House social events, e.g. Quiz nights, Bingo, Cookery mixed sporting events, dinner and dance etc. The girls can also go to the Fitness Suite and have full use of the sports hall for Badminton and Basketball etc. At weekends we try to organise off site activities with trips to London, theatre, paintballing, Go Karting etc. (When Covid restrictions allow) Is there supervised evening study?

We have daily supervised evening study in bedrooms, classroom or library from 7.00pm - 8.30pm.

Year 11s are supervised in silence and Year 12 & 13 work in their rooms. They can work later if they wish.

Will my access arrangements carry forward from GCSE to A Level?

If you are currently a New Hall student, your access arrangements will roll forward from GCSE to A Level. You will need to sign a new data consent form, but you will not need to be reassessed.

If you are not currently a New Hall student, you will be reassessed upon entry to determine your eligibility for access arrangements. There is no charge for this.

Some students will have a timetabled lesson each fortnight, depending on their level of need and their access arrangements. Most students will be able to access support, as and when they need it, from the weekly drop-in session in the Thomas More Centre. This is run by Mrs Smith, Teacher of Learning Development (Sixth Form).

Will teachers be aware of my learning needs?

Yes. All relevant information is flagged to staff on iSAMS and on the SEND register. Each student on SEND Support has an A4 pupil profile and an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that will help teachers differentiate their lessons appropriately.

Will I get my access arrangements for the entrance examinations? (External students only).

Please submit any evidence of your current access arrangements to the Admission Department.

This will be used to determine your eligibility for access arrangements in the entrance examinations. If you then accept a place at the School, you will be reassessed upon entry to determine your eligibility for access arrangements at A Level.

FAQs What support is available for students who would like to apply to Oxbridge?

Each academic department has a dedicated teacher who will be able to support students with applications to Oxbridge and provide subject specialist guidance with your application and interview preparation. The School runs a number of academic societies that allow students to explore issues beyond the confines of the exam specification. A number of departments enter students for national competitions, which allow students to display their passion and proficiency for their chosen subject. New Hall runs trips to Oxford and Cambridge (and alerts students to the Virtual Open Days that are taking place during the current time of restrictions). The Oxbridge Society provides students with guidance on the application process. The Oxbridge Society also includes opportunities for students to present on topics that are of interest to them and to engage in critical thinking and wider research, all skills that will help with your preparation for Oxbridge.

What GCSE grades do I need to have achieved? What predicted A Level grades are required to apply?

The GCSE profile for the average Oxbridge student is at least six top grades at GCSE i.e. Grade 9-8 or A*. You are expected to have displayed academic excellence at GCSE but Oxbridge recognise that there are some students who do not fully blossom academically until Sixth Form.

You will need to ensure that you are predicted to achieve the required A Level grades for the course which means you need to be performing at A*/A consistently in all subjects.

What do Oxbridge Admissions Tutors look for in a student?

Candidates are judged by how well they can think for themselves academically, and how exciting a prospect they would be to teach. You need to display genuine love of learning, intellectual curiosity and passion for your chosen area of study. There is plenty of support available at the Sixth Form to help you with this such as the Oxbridge Society and the opportunity to take the EPQ. If your chosen course requires you to sit a Pre-Admissions test, the score you achieve in this will play an important part in how successful you are. In addition, your personal statement, reference, any evidence of written work that you are asked to submit and your performance at interview will all be considered.

What is required in the Personal Statement?

The personal statement should display your interest in the subject, show how you think (and what kind of student you are) and provide some possible talking points at interview.

What is the collegiate system?

Both Oxford and Cambridge are based on a collegiate system and students at both universities benefit from personalised teaching in small groups with subject experts. Both universities are made up of individual colleges, as well as different academic departments. Academic departments are responsible for core teaching and assessment and colleges provide academic and pastoral support, and arrange small group tuition – sometimes with a tutor or supervisor from another college. You are able to specify a preferred college when you make your UCAS application. However, you may be interviewed by more than one college and you may receive an offer from a different college than the one to which you applied. If you prefer not to choose a college, you can make an open application.

Will I have the opportunity to speak to Oxford and Cambridge graduates to gain further insight into life as a student at these universities?

New Hall has a long tradition of Oxbridge success and we are incredibly proud of our former students who have gone on to read a range of subjects at Oxford and Cambridge over recent years including Medicine, History, Theology, PPE, Mathematics, Music, Modern Languages and Classics. We hold an annual Oxbridge dinner and other regular meetings via Zoom where New Hallians who have attended Oxford and Cambridge meet with our current students for advice and support.
