New Hall Scoops 4 Top Awards New Hall School attended the Essex Business Excellence Awards on Thursday evening. The finalists’ awards dinner at Stock Brook Manor turned out to be a memorable evening of celebration.

We were entered for 3 categories: Essex Community Award (NHVS and Messing Primary sponsorship); Best Growth; and Excellence in Marketing. Not only did we win all 3 categories, we went on to win the overall ‘outstanding’ category, as Essex Business of the Year 2013! In the 16 years of the competition, only once before has a finalist won in as many as 4 categories.

The Guest of Honour for the evening was The Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. The competition is run by the Essex Chronicle newspaper, so look out for coverage in next week’s edition.

Mrs Jeffrey accepted the awards on behalf of the school and acknowledged the great teamwork, dedication, care and commitment from all staff at New Hall for going the extra mile to make our wonderful school stand out as worthy of such recognition. She also thanked parents for their on-going support and, of course, our students, praising them for their dedication and commitment to learning.

OLIVER CARRIES THE NATION’S FLAG

Congratulations to Oliver Swallow (Year 11) who was selected by British Triathlon to carry the nation’s flag in the opening ceremony of the PruHealth ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Championships.

The ceremony took place in London’s Trafalgar Square on the evening of Wednesday 11 September to mark the commencement of a five-day triathlon festival.

Oliver has had a wonderfully successful year in triathlon, competing in the British Triathlon Youth Super Series Championships, winning Silver on the podium at Eton Dorney, as well as qualifying for both the ITU Youth Aquathlon and Triathlon World Championships.

PRAYERS FOR SYRIA This week, the Chaplaincy team held a day of prayer for Syria. On Wednesday, all staff and students were invited to visit the Chapel throughout the day to pray and light candles for those who are suffering.

God of Mercy, Pour out your peace upon us all.

Watch over our brothers and sisters in Syria, especially those who have fled their homes.

Lead them to a place of safety and bring comfort to those who mourn.

Inspire us all the share the light of your hope, and to reach out in a spirit of compassion.

Make us channels of your peace, so all your children may live free from fear, conflict and pain.

We ask this through Christ our Lord, Prince of Peace, Amen.

LUCAS CYCLES FOR ARTHRITIS CHARITY Lucas Bowers (Year 9) has completed a 100 mile cycle ride in aid of Arthritis Research UK this summer. He has written the following account of his experience: “I have been riding my bike for quite some time now

SUCCESS FOR GEORGINA FRISWELL IN PONY RACING FINALS

Georgina Friswell’s (Year 11) pony racing season culminated last Sunday in the National Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals at York. Georgina has had an extremely busy season competing in a total of 28 races on her two ponies, Good Luck Rosie and Stambrook Marquesa at some of the top racing courses in the UK, including Ascot and Newbury.

The top 12 ponies in the country qualify for the finals by accumulating points if they finish in the top 4 during the race course series. Georgina came 5th in the race on Stambrook Marquesa, narrowly missing out on 4th place.

She was later that day presented with the Rose Bengal Scholarship, which is given to the rider in each category that has shown the most hard work, commitment and progress throughout the season. The prize consists of money for a racing saddle, a personalised jacket, personalised breeches, media training and a day’s private tuition from a jockey coach.

CONNOR’S MUSICAL SUMMER IN BOSTON Connor Selby (Year 11) travelled to Berklee College of Music in Boston this summer to participate in their 30 th Annual Guitar Sessions programme. Connor wrote an account of his time there:

and was encouraged by my family to take on a challenge that involved raising sponsorship. I was inspired to raise money for Arthritis Research UK as, unfortunately, my 3 year old niece was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) at the age of 1. My family and I have been thankful for the support given by the charity. With this in mind, I decided to cycle 100 miles for them during the summer holidays.

I had a target of £200, however, before I even started the race I had already raised over £300. I have now raised £537.50, which I am extremely happy about”.

“I enlisted for blues music as it is my favourite genre and the one I am most proficient at. Every day I had three classes: Blues Styles class, Fret Board Harmony and Ensemble. Mr Dan Bowden taught us many things about the blues genre and how to improve our playing ability. We studied many tracks over the course of the week such as I Got a Break Baby by T-Bone Walker and The Thrill is Gone by BB King.

Mr Bowden stressed that in order to play the blues properly you need to study the way these players play and not just the notes they play. We were also taught by other instructors such as Bob Thompson, an amazing player who studied with the late Lenny Breau, as well as a visit from musical expert Mike Stern, who played with Miles Davis and Eric Johnson. The week ended with a final concert where we played three of the five tracks we had learned that week. Ten of us (out of 250 attendees) were awarded a scholarship. I will definitely be going back in the future”.

CRICKET School Cricketers Enjoying an Indian Summer Cricketers from across the school have finished the season with their clubs and have had an amazing amount of success over the summer. 1st XI cricketer Connor Whetstone (Year 12) made his debut for Brentwood CC 1st XI in the Essex Premier League, recording a superb figure of 3-18 against Buckhurst Hill, with Mr James taking the catch to secure his first wicket. Cameron Spicer (Year 11) and George Davies (Year 11), secured their Sunday league and cup for Shenfield CC, while the Junior XIs have had a successful run in the national T20, with the 2014 season holding an exciting fixture list.

Congratulations also to Matthew Cook, Fabian Bright and Felix May (all Year 7) who play for the Chelmsford Cricket Club U11s. The side, captained by Matthew Cook, won the Essex Central District League last Saturday.

HOCKEY Antonia Kitchiner (Year 10) has been selected to represent the Junior Regional Performance Centre U15 squad at the tier 1 regional tournament. Over the summer, Antonia attended a series of training sessions and was one of only 20 girls to be selected for the next stage of the trials. This is an outstanding achievement and we wish her all the best in the next stage of the selection process.
