The British Arts Awards TENNIS NEWQUAY TRIP During half term, 30 students travelled to Newquay to participate in an LTA Grade 3 competition. For some of the students, this was their first experience of competitive tennis outside school. All students were entered into three events and the standard of the event was very high. The New Hall students conducted themselves beautifully, both on and off court, and were involved with a number of activities away from the tennis club, including surfing.
Congratulations to Lucy Ashfield (Year 11), Isabel Miller de Vega (Year 11), Princess Gloria Bajowa (Year 12), Hannah Jones (Year 13), Darcie Playle (Year 10), Hannah Tomlinson-Roe (Year 10), Caroline Buckley (Year 10), Zoe Williams (Year 10), Josip Martincic (Year 12) and Gregor Petrikovic (Year 12) who took part in the final of The British Arts Awards on Saturday 25 May. The dancers travelled to the Bloomsbury Theatre in London to compete against other finalists in the annual international dance, drama and singing competition. The standard was extremely high and the New Hall students rose to the occasion to give outstanding performances.
The highlights of an exceptional week of tennis were from Charisma Nuqui (Year 7) who won the U12 girls singles and was a semi-finalist in the U14 single and doubles event, along with Connie Day (Year 8). Alex Groves (Year 7) had to play fellow New Hall student Cameron Isbell (Year 7) in the U12 boys final which proved to be a close match. Alex eventually won 6-4, 6-3. Richard Barber (Year 10) and Ellie Batley (Year 10) also got through to the U16 consolation final where they were narrowly beaten.
Darcie Playle (Year 10) and Gregor Petrikovic (Year 12) won their category of Modern Duets and were given a resounding reception by the audience. The adjudicator admitted that their moving performance bought her to tears. Gregor was also awarded a scholarship from The British Arts Association for two weeks of training and accommodation over the summer at a professional dance college in London for being the ‘most promising boy’.
It was great to see so many of our students enjoying their tennis and supporting the team; well done to everyone who took part.
All of the students came 2nd overall in the Advanced Large Groups category with their performance of ‘Autumn Leaves’ – a dance taken from the forthcoming Dance Show at Chelmsford Civic Theatre.
