Diocesan Citizenship Awards know a generation of New Hall students.

This is the second time RDA has produced a Diocesan winner and we all share in their success."

On Friday 3 May 2013, Hanik Kotecha and Madeleine Leathley (both Year 13) received Catholic Diocesan Citizenship Awards at Brentwood Cathedral in recognition of their tireless work raising money for charity, creating community and promoting prayer and reflection in school.

In March, Madeleine was also awarded The Canon Manning Trophy, recognising her commitment to others and her work with the RDA group. Madeleine said "I have really enjoyed volunteering at New Hall and look to continue this activity at University. Riding for the Disabled (RDA) has been particularly rewarding, watching the riders improve physically and develop friendships over the five years I have been attending. Volunteering also gives me something interesting to talk about when I meet new people, and has been a helpful addition to my CV when applying for work experience."

The New Hall Voluntary Service is urgently seeking adult helpers/drivers to join the rotas for our Saturday morning groups. The RDA group meet at Rawreth Equestrian Centre between 9.45am and 11.30am, with a minibus leaving from front of school at 9.15am to transport students. Saturday Club is a group for children recommended to us by local schools or social services.

They meet at the Hut by Walkfares rugby pitches between 10.30am and 12.00noon, and come to New Hall to play football, ride bikes and enjoy varied craft activities. If you have some time to give, even if only one morning per half term, and would like more information, please contact Mrs Wilson in the NHVS office at a.wilson2@newhallschool.co.uk.

MUSIC LUNCHTIME CONCERT The lunchtime concert on Wednesday 8 May was a celebration of beautiful voices.

Emily Royce (Year 12) performed the BachGounod Ave Maria. Hollie Edmeades (Year 9) sang a traditional Irish air, The Sunflower, and Teresa Guerrero (Year 12) completed the concert with Per la gloria d'adorarvi by Bonocini. Next week's concert focusses on the guitar.

EXAMINATION SUCCESSES During half term, Amy-Beth Ellice (Year 10) was entered into the Stratford Music Festival in three categories; ‘classical 17 and under’, ‘jazz’ and ‘religious’; attaining highly commended. Amy also recently achieved a merit in her Grade 5 harp examination and passed her Grade 5 theory examination.

BIOLOGY BRITISH OLYMPIAD

Congratulations to Joshua Hallett (Year 7) who has passed his Grade 6 clarinet examination with merit. He is also part of a chamber music ensemble group, ‘The Original Woodwind Ensemble’, and will be playing with them at the ‘Music for Youth’ national finals in Birmingham in July this year. The group are entered in two different ensemble groups in the U14 and U19 age group categories—we wish Joshua the best of luck at the competition.

370TH ANNIVERSARY CD ‘A Chapter in the Story’, a CD recording of music to celebrate the 370th anniversary of the founding of the New Hall Community and School, is now available to buy for £10.00 from Mrs Warren. The CD is intended to be a testament to our heritage and living community. Material has been selected from across the ages, performed by current members of the school, Old Fishes and friends. Congratulations to Elizabeth Shiers and Catherine Leighton (both Year 13) for gaining Bronze medals in the British Biology Olympiad Competition, organised by The Society of Biology. Arthur Tessier, Caroline Flechtner and Chun Cheng Huang (all Year 13) received 'Highly Commended' certificates and Imogen Ovenden and Lani Graham (both Year 13) received 'Commended' certificates.

DANCE EXAMINATION RESULTS Congratulations to the following students on their recent examination results:

On Thursday 2 May, the first Confirmation Service of the year took place in the Chapel. Confirmation is an ancient and important service of commitment for those who want to proclaim their faith in Jesus Christ. We were delighted that Bishop Thomas McMahon, Bishop of Brentwood, was able to join us for the Catholic confirmation of a record 26 candidates. Hold them in your prayers.

EXTENDED PROJECTS Congratulations to Catherine Leighton (Year 13) who has received an outstanding result for her Level 3 Extended Project.

The examination board commended the exceptionally high quality of her work.

Catherine researched the causes of the decline of vulture populations in South Asia with an emphasis on the use of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Dicofenac, which she found to be the main cause of death in the three critically endangered species of Gyps vulture. Her report also investigated other possible causes of vulture decline and

FUNDRAISING SWIMMING FOR MARIE CURIE Congratulations to Harriet Bartram-Baird (Year 11) who recently completed a Swimathon for Marie Curie Cancer care, completing 5k in an hour and raising over £300 for the cause.

DANCE SHOW Sophia Moore (Year 7) is organising a dance show, to be held at New Hall School on Wednesday 29 May 2013, in aid of the Charlotte Leatherbarrow Foundation. Charlotte Leatherbarrow, who was a dancer in Billy Elliot The Musical, died after being hit by a double-decker bus in March 2011. Sophia has organised the annual dance show to raise funds for her memorial charity for the past two years, after dancing with Charlotte in Billy Elliot. Last year the show raised over £2200 for the Charlotte Leatherbarrow Foundation. This year’s ‘Let the Light Shine On’ show will take place at New Hall School on Wednesday 29 May 2013 at 7.00pm. EQUESTRIAN NSEA COUNTY QUALIFIER

Congratulations to the New Hall Riding Team who competed at the NSEA County Qualifier at Norton Heath last week. The 70cm team; consisting of Amelia August (Year 5), Megan Cotton (Year 7), Madeleine Gardiner (Year 9) and Toby Holland (Year 7); were placed 3 rd. The first of the 80cm teams; consisting of Stephanie Wilson (Year 9), Rosie Oxlade (Year 10), Joanna Thorogood (Year 9) and Gemma Cotton; were placed 2nd and the other New Hall team; consisting of Jasmine Holland (Year 8), Madeleine Gardiner, Nina Merrigan (Year 10) and Megan Cotton; were placed 6th. The 90cm team; consisting of : Stephanie Wilson, Jasmine Holland, Nina Merrigan and Gemma Cotton; were placed 2nd and the other New Hall team; consisting of Annabel Gardiner (Year 11), Rosie Oxlade, Stephanie Wilson and Joanna Thorogood; were placed 4 th.

All the riders were a credit to the school. Thank you to all the parents for their help.

RUGBY ESSEX TRIUMPH FOR NEW HALL BOYS Congratulations to Joshua Hallett, Edward Lerwill, Louis Edwards and Cameron Meechan (all Year 7), who recently won the Land Rover Premiership Cup as part of the Southend U12A rugby team. The boys and their team also won the Essex County U12 Cup and have not been beaten by an Essex side for the past 5 years.

ESSEX TENNIS HONOURS Congratulations to Cameron Isbell (Year 7) and Alex Groves (Year 7) who represented Essex in the U12 Lionel Cox Competition. This year, the Essex U12’s went in as number 1 seeds having won in 2012 - so they had a bye in the first round. Later they won all matches against Norfolk and then Hertfordshire and went on to beat Buckinghamshire in the final. Additional congratulations go to Charisma Nuqui (Year 7) who helped the Essex girls team to reach the final and to James Caddies (Year 9) and Jacob Ducksbury (Year 9) who have been representing Essex in the U14 County Cup.
