Sri Lanka & Iceland Trips CRICKET TOUR TO SRI LANKA Eighteen boys from New Hall Cricket Academy travelled to Sri Lanka during the Easter holidays, where they played matches against Sri Lankan teams, including fixtures at Hambantota Stadium and Dambulla International Stadium. A particular highlight for the students was facing the District XI for the South at Rajapaksa International Stadium, the biggest cricket stadium in Asia.

During the Easter holidays, a group of geographers from Years 11 – 13 travelled to Iceland to support their studies. Students took part in exciting field work, including seeing erupting geysers and hiking along the edge of a 70m high gorge to the waterfall Gullfoss. The students saw Seljalandsfoss, a beautiful waterfall with a hidden cave, and Skogarfoss, a 60m waterfall that students looked down on, from a viewing platform, reached by climbing 380 steps.

As well as plenty of cricket fixtures and training while in Sri Lanka, the students also visited the Foundation of Goodness, a charity working to improve the lives of the people living in the surrounding areas through sport, education and healthcare. It was an emotional day for everyone when they opened the New Hall School IT suite, with 10 new computers generously donated on behalf of the school.

A highlight of the trip for everyone was the glacier walk, where all staff and students were equipped with a helmet, crampons and an ice axe before being roped together in groups and making their way up towards the summit of Sólheimajökull. The students also took a morning hike up into the Skaftafell hills to the majestic waterfall, Svartifoss, complete with basalt columns, and visited Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. There was the opportunity to climb the largest lateral moraine in Europe and the group also squeezed through the underground lava tubes.

Read the Sri Lanka blog for full details and match reports from their trip.

The trip was an exceptional learning experience for everyone and a once-in-alifetime opportunity to see geography being learnt in lessons ‘in action’. Read the Iceland blog for full details of the trip.
