European Parliament Visit Last week, a group of Sixth Form Politics students visited the institutions of the European Union in Brussels, Belgium. After a trip on the Eurostar, the students had a session with Mr Van Orden, a Member of European Parliament for East Anglia, who officially invited New Hall students to visit Brussels. After a thoughtprovoking talk on the changing nature of the UK-EU relationship, students discussed questions such as a common European military and the role of the media in politics.
CHARITABLE AWARD FOR MADDIE Madeleine Leathley (Year 13) has been awarded The Canon Manning Trophy, which recognises commitment to others. The award was presented, in a special assembly, by the Knights of St Columba, a Catholic order of laymen. In the last year, Madeleine has helped organise a student Christmas card design competition to raise money for a charity TeensUnite, a charity which works with young people with cancer. Through the cards and other events within the school, she helped to raised £5000 in just five weeks last term. Congratulations to Madeleine on this achievement.
One of the civil servants, Chris from Northern Ireland, met with students and explained the behind-the-scenes life of the Parliament and the Commission. The day ended with a visit to the ‘Standing Committee on trade with ASEAN countries’ and a visit to the ‘Parliamentarium’, a very elaborate visitors’ centre. They had a short look around the city centre on Thursday night, before returning to one of the many meeting rooms in the Parliament for a seminar on the different institutions of the EU. Everyone enjoyed their time in Belgium, and, thanks to the very interesting and engaging programme, learnt many things relevant to the A Level specification, and well beyond. There will be a debate, for all years, entitled ‘Should the UK should leave the EU?’ on Monday 18 March at 4.45pm in the North Room.
