Daws Hall Nature Reserve On Wednesday 24 April, Year 5 ventured to Daws Hall Nature Reserve. They were presented with a gorgeous, sunny day after two postponements due to snow last term. Once the pupils arrived at the nature reserve on the border of Essex and Suffolk, they began exploring the landscape, the brook and River Stour. They used maps, pictures and field sketches to understand the importance of river landscapes, carried out experiments to look at how water moves through the land and did some sketches. Everyone developed and used their geographical vocabulary to discussion ideas around erosion, deposition and about the river landscape. The pupils collected bucket water from the brook and the River Stour, carried out some tests on the water, and made comparison about the temperature, water clarity and how much fertiliser was in the water. Finally, they were able to take a brook dip to collect and identify animals and take measurements. Overall, Year 5 had a fantastic day in the outdoors, recapping and developing knowledge and practical geography skills covered in their Raging Rivers topic. A big thank you to Mrs Gurr, Mrs Claridge, Mr Carter, Mrs Spilsbury, Mrs Westwood, Mrs Thorogood and Mrs Smith for giving up their time in supporting the pupils on this educational visit to Daws Hall.
