Assistant editor of Tie the Knot Scotland, Amy Shearer, shares top advice to ensure you get hitched without a hitch
You’re doing it… you’re getting married! Congratulations! After you’ve said ‘I do’ you might be wondering where to begin on your wedding planning adventure. Here’s a few pointers to consider before you start the journey of a lifetime.
It goes without saying, but make sure you’re marrying the right person! Nothing is official until you’ve signed your name (using black fountain-pen ink, no less). So, confirming they are the face you want to see when you wake up every morning is a solid starting point!
If money was no object, I’m sure we’d all hire Cher, Taylor Swift or ABBA Voyage holograms to perform and we’d have a couture gown designed by a contact from Anna Wintour’s little black book. But weddings can get expensive; being realistic is key. What you want to spend and can spend are two different things. Do you have savings you can splurge? Family members willing to help? Of course, you could opt for a small affair – a simple ceremony in a Scottish registry office sets you back £155. However, if you want the day to be more than just the ‘I do’, employ some cost-saving savviness. From twilight weddings to bridal sample sales, there are
ways to make your budget work for you.
Who do you envision around you as you say your vows? Whether it’s your nearest and dearest, or everyone and their granny, who you have on your guest list is your prerogative (as Britney Spears once sang!). Categorise people as A guests (those whose attendance is non-negotiable), B guests (those you’d like to be there if budget allows), and C guests (those who you feel obliged to invite because someone else is footing the bill), and go from there. But, if it’s your cash, it’s your call – do your day your way.
There’s a winning formula here: your absolute essential guests + budget = the venues you should consider. You might want a multiple-day celebration, so a venue with exclusive-use weekend accommodation could work. Or maybe you fancy a fantastic foodie offering?
In Scotland we have everything from beautiful blankcanvas barns where details down to the napkins you blot your lippy on can be customised, to all-inclusive packages where you could, in theory, just turn up at the end of the aisle. Or of course, you could elope or hop on a plane to sunnier climes.
Naturally, weekend weddings during the summer book up first. There’s a reason couples sometimes wait years for a Saturday in July – they are prime dates, and it also gives them a chance to spread costs. If you’re not precious, consider a winter midweek celebration (you’ll probably get a deal on this too!).
Whether you want a day to rival Anthony and Stanford’s Sex and the City nuptials or perhaps you fancy yourself a gothic Kardashian-Barker-esque celebration, there’s lots of places you can find inspiration – both fictional and real. Read a wedding magazine (cough, cough) or head to Pinterest, TikTok or Instagram to start scrolling and saving.
You’ve already visited the country’s biggest wedding show, so next up, read magazines, peruse this very souvenir brochure, head to online forums and trawl social media to find the suppliers who resonate with you and your vision. Decide who or what is a priority, too. If you’re always getting the shot for the ’gram, you might allocate more of your budget to a top photographer. Or maybe you dream of meandering down an aisle adorned with ravishing white roses, so
give the florist top billing on your budget allocation. The wedding industry is friendly and fabulous, and chances are if you book someone to do one thing, they can steer you towards someone who can do something else.
Weddings aren’t unlike cars, houses and smartphones –they should be insured too. Hopefully you get hitched without a hitch, but it’s always worth investing in a safety net when you’ve invested so much.
For ideas on what to wear, the best make-up ideas and how to style your hair, we’ve got you covered!
Making a very welcome resurgence, sheath dresses are ideal for those wanting a curveskimming silhouette and are perfect for city and destination weddings. If you’re after a form-fitting dress that transcends time, this body-tracing design could be ideal.
Basque corsets are big for this season. With their timeless regality, they reign supreme amidst a myriad of other captivating dress trends.
Romantic ruffles are big news! It’s 80s decadence meets modern fashion. There’s versatility on the placement too – from adorning the neckline to featuring skirts with waterfall layers of dreamy tulle, which is a hugely popular style choice this year.
Dare to bare, with confidence. Plunging necklines are popular, and with illusion panelling options increasing, you can get the look while still feeling supported! Ideal for all wedding styles, and matching most venues, this elegant silhouette truly has the wow factor.
Whether it’s tucked low or up high, the wow factor of a perfectly styled bun is a hot choice for bridal hair this year.
Many brides are giving curls a whirl for their big day hairdos – from natural curls pulled to the side to curly bobs and buns.
The messy updo, or soft updo, is almost as popular today as it was back when Pamela Anderson inspired that beautiful look. Relaxed and effortless, yet also secure and long-lasting.
Great for a mehndi ceremony and now increasingly popular on the day itself, these distinctive braids are easy, timeless, fuss-free and as formal or boho as you like!
Natural hair is the gift that spoils you for choice, from a high-side afro puff to a short curly crop, from locs to buns, twists to pineapples. All are hot this year.
Whether paired with tight curls, light waves or a side parting, pixie cuts are proving to be a popular choice right now. A stylish yet low-maintenance option, this short style is ideal for those who appreciate a ‘get up and go’ look.
With technology evolving rapidly, new and innovative trends have reached the make-up industry and make-up artists can now use augmented reality to help brides-tobe try different looks alongside their attire before committing.
From the soles of shoes to the tips of fingernails, red is likely to be woven into bridal beauty – a symbol of love, passion and sensuality. If you fear it may be a bit bold, you can
Colourful eyeliner shades – such as emerald green, electric blue and fiery red – are all the rage, to make a statement that ties in with and complements a number of chosen styles.
Forget simple studs – it's all about bold and eye-catching earrings that grab attention. Everything from chandelier designs dripping with crystals to contemporary clay florals, statement earrings can add a touch of drama to your ensemble – framing your face and giving that perfect finishing touch.
Gaining popularity among modern brides, the trend of headband layering involves wearing multiple bands, of varying widths and textures, to create a unique and personalised look that reflects your individual style. With luxurious touches including delicate lace, sparkling crystals and intricate beadwork, these are a stunning way to make a style statement.
There are a number of chic options for a modern take on this traditional piece, from coloured fabrics to floor length in front and short behind –showcasing a dress’s statement back – and a cocoon-like style that’s nipped in at the waist.
A symbol of eternal love and commitment, there is no piece of jewellery quite like the wedding ring. Whether you prefer a classic band –such as titanium with a satin finish – a more modern patterned ring – for example a 9ct yellow gold Celtic wedding ring – or an elegant, diamondset number – for instance a platinum diamond twist wedding ring – our headline sponsor James Porter & Son has a vast range, with styles to suit everyone that will last a lifetime.

Whether grand and formal, casual and convenient or a little bit unusual, whatever your vibe there’s a venue for you!
Whether for religious reasons with a church, living out your fairytale fantasy with a castle, or if you’re just after the grandeur of a venue that will leave a lasting impact, these grand historic settings can bring a regal and perhaps even an ethereal element to your big day.
Ideal for those after a boho or rustic feel, as this style is built right in when you choose a barn or farm setting with features such as vaulted timber ceilings and wood-plank floors. Utilise the natural setting – adorn the fields with fairy lights and create a seating range by covering hay bales with blankets for homespun charm. Amplify the sophistication with accents of velvet, and even chandeliers! Barns can often be dry hire, which gives you a blank canvas to work with (but also a bit more work to do!)
Homes like these are perfect for couples who appreciate a historical space. Showcasing distinctive interiors and rich architectural styles – such as Victorian, Colonial or Romantic – along with impressive grounds and gardens that make for the perfect picture opportunity!
Known for their polished facilities and professional staff, hotels are often a popular choice due to their beautiful surroundings – particularly when the location is within a spectacular estate. However, one of the primary draws is the unmatched convenience – you can host the ceremony, reception and out-of-town guests all in one place, and there’s a dedicated team on hand to make your day absolutely perfect.
For couples whose main concern is simply making it official, halls and registry offices should not be ruled out –especially for the affordability and convenience they offer.
Very little is off limits in Scotland because you can get married anywhere – the venue doesn’t need to be licensed – so your imagination can run wild! From museums and libraries to golf courses and lighthouses, these could be a great choice for couples who have particular passions or hobbies.
Once your wedding venue is decided, another ingredient in your big day is the menu! Here are some options currently trending at weddings
Aiming to offer guests the warmth and familiarity of family-style dining while still providing a sense of luxury, elevated comfort food plays with presentation and ingredients to bring traditional dishes with a twist. Artisan cheese toasties? Mashed tatties served in martini glasses? Endless ideas!
These days it’s not just about providing options, but catering entire weddings with vegan cuisine. Delivering innovative dishes that are as delicious as they are sustainable, these menus are designed to prove that plant-based can satisfy everyone.
Couples are choosing menus that offer wholesome options including high protein, low sugar and gluten-free. Superfoods such as quinoa, kale and avocados are very much in vogue, reflecting the strong trend towards healthconscious eating.
Incorporating this long-loved tradition into your wedding is a great way to keep the party going after a day of mingling and dancing! From pizza trucks and sushi platters to ice cream trucks and gourmet popcorn, bring your guests a scrumptious surprise that delights your personal tastes. Many are also asking caterers to recreate their favourite fast-food options – which can allow for your own wedding branding in place of a chain name.
The popularity of global street food has also spread on to the wedding scene. Catering to those after casual yet flavourful dining options – with everything from Mexican tacos to Indian chaat – this trend showcases a rich tapestry of taste sensations while bringing an element of fun and informality to your celebration.
Make your ideal dream wedding a reality with these trending thematic ideas
Emphasising recycled materials, locally sourced food and sustainable décor, this trend is for couples who want to tread lightly when it comes to their impact on the Earth. You may opt for digital invitations over paper ones, or try using vintage or heirloom pieces, which not only adds a touch of nostalgia but also reduces the demand for new products. Incorporating organic materials also creates a connection to nature. It’s all about simplicity and authenticity, creating a setting that feels warm and inviting – try using raw wood tables and including greenery in your centrepieces.
Venues with grand staircases and ornate architecture evoke the timeless elegance of this aesthetic. For décor options, think of adding touches of glitz through your tableware, candelabras or picture frames.
This is all about free-spirited, unconventional creativity, with an eclectic mix of elements typical of the 60s and 70s. Often earth-tone palettes, organic elements, such as wicker, stone and agates, and dried flowers and herbs blend to create an almost hippyish vibe. Add fringed throws, vintage rugs and embroidered fabrics for a tactile and visually stimulating look. It’s a thrill to chill!
The trend of having a fruit focus has been growing, with small bowls of berries as edible tablescapes while a fruit-infused water station could bring a refreshing –and visually appealing – drink option for the sober, sober curious or those that need to sober up!
This is all about opulence and detail – lace gowns, classic cars and jazz bands. Vintage-themed weddings embrace classical style. These celebrations are as much about honouring the past as they are about looking forward to the future.
Burnt orange is a brilliant colour for autumn and winter weddings – and it goes really well with blue! So, as just one example of how you can embrace this colour theme, why not pair burnt orange bridesmaids’ dresses with navy groomsmen suits?
Bold colours are a great way to curate a visually stunning setting. Opt for pastels – lavenders, baby blues – or rich jewel tones, like deep purple and emerald green, mixed with warm earthy terracotta, mustard yellow and burnt orange.
Well groomed
Make a statement with stylish attire and accessories. Here are a few suave suggestions…
Embroidered collars and cuffs, custom linings and monogrammed pocket squares are set to be huge for grooms, not only to make their suit their own, but to commemorate their special day. Everything from unique cufflinks to colourful pocket squares and funky socks are also ways for the men to make a statement on their wedding day. You could also bring a unique touch of whimsy and elegance with a brooch – which could also be a good gift for your groomsmen.
Shirt and tie colour matching is also taking off for this season. An easy way to give a minimal and modern finish to your wedding suit, think white tie on white shirt, black bow tie on black shirt or even khaki on khaki. Whatever colour suits, there’s lots of choice.
Bringing a touch more formality and festivity than a classic jacket is its double-buttoned brother. With its pronounced shape accentuating the upper part of the body and making you look slimmer, a doublebreasted jacket fits in especially well with vintage and retro aesthetics, which are also currently popular – although if you wish to modernise this look, go for a softer silhouette.
With the trend bigger than ever for brides, grooms are also getting in on this wedding bandwagon – why not swap your ceremony suit for something more casual and relaxed during your reception?
At Scottish weddings, it’s lucky to have a piper play – especially during the dinner, after the ceremony. ‘Paying the Piper’ refers to the bride offering the piper a dram of whisky once they have played to the couple at the top table – before they then perform a toast to the newlyweds.
The colloquialism ‘tying the knot’ refers to a multi-cultural belief in knots symbolising unity. Scottish weddings often invoke this by way of handfasting, derived from an old Celtic custom in which a couple are bound together by the wrists using cloth, cord or ribbon to signify their commitment to one another
A custom observed in traditional and contemporary Scottish weddings is blessing the marriage by drinking a dram of (usually) whisky from a ceremonial quaich, often given to the couple as a wedding gift and engraved with the date of the marriage.
Another ancient Celtic tradition, the act of the newlyweds jumping over a broom on the ground without touching it symbolises the sweeping away of the past and the joining of two families.
While kilts may be the obvious choice of Scottish attire, there are options for everyone. Tartan trews may be more practical, or the wedding party and guests alike could add a touch of tartan with a fascinator, shoes, tie, or stole – the list is endless!
The interest in getting married abroad is as strong as ever, and if this something you’re considering, here are some inspiration points from Sandals Resorts
If you decide to marry overseas there are a few financial considerations – including the costs of flights and a marriage licence, which can vary by destination.
When you’ve chosen to tie the knot away from home, there’s a lot that then goes into the decision of where to wed. For example, the type of venue you want – do you want to marry on a beach or in a chapel overlooking stunning scenery?
Sandals top tip: Carry important items with you in hand luggage – if anything was to happen to your main luggage, you don’t want it to stop you from being able to get married.
The weather on your wedding day will be influenced by the location you pick, so if you’re not comfortable in humidity, wearing lighter fabrics can help. Even in the most beautiful places, you can’t predict the weather – so plan alternatives.
Sandals top tip: Sandals is based in the Caribbean, where we don’t just get rain. If you’re planning on getting married here, plan to have your wedding outside of hurricane season!
Even if you choose a destination where they speak a language with which you are confident, be aware that not everyone might speak the same one.
Sandals top tip: When dealing with suppliers, don’t hesitate to ask for help from a professional to ensure your needs are properly communicated.
Are you planning to elope just as a couple, have a handful of close friends and family witness, or party with a larger group? Sandals top tip: Even if you are not having guests, it’s common for people to surprise the happy couple, even if it is not your desire. Consider this possibility and plan accordingly.
If you are planning on having guests – and hosting them, and yourselves – consider the availability of accommodation at your location and factor in the price and proximity to the venue.
Be mindful of cultural sensitivities and ensure that you are okay with respecting local customs and traditions where appropriate. While marrying overseas may mean going outside your comfort zone, try to embrace the culture and enjoy all it has to offer.
All-inclusive destinations are also a great option to avoid having to worry about where to have your honeymoon. If you’re staying at a resort, extend the celebrations from your big day into your break away!
Each country has unique marriage laws – remember that you are following those of the country you are getting married in, not your home country. Although you don’t need to understand every single reason why things are different, you do need to be aware of the requirements.
Cool ways to create mementos of your wedding!
A high-energy snippet from your wedding video, encapsulating clips from your vow exchange to last dance, the 90-second sizzle reel is a reel-y good way to relive your day. GIFs and cinemagraphs are also emerging at weddings, as they become easier to create. The difference between the two is that with GIFs everything within the frame moves, whereas cinemagraphs are mostly still with moving elements. And going back to the future, 35mm film is making a comeback for weddings, as it offers a timeless quality and photographs imbued with greater depth and emotion.
From the world of photojournalistic photography, blurred action shots are popular for weddings as they add movement and a dream-like quality to images. They also offer a unique way to infuse depth and romance into photos, making them more captivating.
Take your wedding album to new heights with a drone photographer. Get a view of your ceremony seating from above or pose with your partner and guests for creative aerial wedding shots. Having disposable cameras for guests to use is popular too, for the candid moments that would once have been lost.
A trend that has been gaining traction in recent years, the technique of direct flash photography involves using flash that’s pointed directly at a subject, which creates a sharper and more dramatic effect than the usual diffused flash. These high-contrast photos are like the party shots in your favourite glossy mag and are timeless whatever your style.
GET IT DOCUMENTED
It’s predicted that documentarystyle videography will be a top priority for weddings, with couples wanting fewer posed portraits and more candid content to capture the true atmosphere of the day.
Small details and thoughtful additions can add that little extra something to make your big day really special
The appeal of timeless classics endures… so expect to hear iconic artists like Queen, ABBA and Elvis continue to grace wedding day playlists and reception dance floors.
Primarily based on classic and modern house music, this concept –inspired by the trendsetting clubs of Ibiza – came about in recent years and combines a live DJ with amplified saxophone and sometimes live percussion, like a bongo player!
Providing something truly unique at weddings, roaming bands move between guests and interact with the crowd. Most are acoustic, so more suitable for intimate settings, but some are wirelessly amplified and able to provide high-energy pop and rock covers for dancing.
To engage their guests and create a lively atmosphere, couples are incorporating interactive song requests into their receptions, utilising technology such as song request apps and interactive playlists. An approach that stands the test of time is choosing songs that have personal meaning to them – especially for moments such as the first dance – to add a heartfelt touch to their celebrations.
From warm, earthy tones or vibrant colour-block palettes to monochromes with striking flashes of bold colour or eccentric, colour-clashing combinations, a universal favourite for wedding stationery is – colour! This trend is also extending to table décor, so expect to see rich shades of emerald green, sunny yellows, punchy peaches and even the classic red and
Textures are taking the cake this year! From pleats and lace to stencilled patterns that match your grandmother’s wedding china, or ruffles that mimic the design of your dress, these are low-key ways to add a little flourish to the finale of your day.
Repurposed wedding favours are becoming very popular for several reasons including their personal touch, sustainability, versatility and reusability. Luggage tags are a great choice for this idea, as they can function as unique wedding favours thanks to the outer engraving, and the inner personalised message acts as the guest’s place card.
