SHOW GUIDE Loving mobile leisure

The joys of camping and touring Caroline Mills, editor of Touring Magazine, talks about her love of touring and the mobile leisure lifestyle There cannot be a child who, at some stage in their childhood, hasn’t draped a duvet cover over a couple of chairs and ‘camped’. Who hasn’t created a den in their bedroom or garden, had a picnic – pretend or otherwise – or a midnight feast and devoured an entire packet of Wotsits or Jammie Dodgers by torchlight, or attempted to sleep in a makeshift tent. That was me. That was my children.

10 caravanshowscotland.com

A new camping shop opened close to home when I was six, and my birthday present was a real tent and camping tableware. I already had the sleeping bag. The tent was bright blue with orange doors, and I loved it. It stayed up in the garden all summer and the summer after that, until, when I was ten, I was allowed to go on my first week-long camping holiday with a friend away from home. The tent blew away.

SHOW GUIDE Loving mobile leisure

Camping, in all its guises, became a part of my life and has defined many moments. I’ve now racked up a half-century of camping and caravanning, campervan and motorhome road trips, glamping, and the occasional holiday home stay. Why camping and (motor)caravanning? As I write in the introduction to my new book, Camping Road Trips UK: “Camping immerses one into a locale more than any other form of accommodation. The sound of a tent or awning zip echoing into the night, or gently falling rain on the roof of a campervan as you drift off to sleep; the smell of slightly singed marshmallows, oozing with stickiness inside; snuggled in blankets beside the warmth of an autumn campfire with its scent of oak smoke, and mesmerised by the flickers of the flame; contemplating a three-quarter moon and the stars while listening to the babble of a nearby stream in the dark; waking up in a field to morning dew and a blackbird’s song. There is no doubt that camping gives beguiling access to nature, to velvet nights and the harmony of sunrise.” Whenever I step inside my campervan, I can feel the tempo of my heartbeat rising. My little homefrom-home, complete with cosy bed and cooking facilities, is, right now, sat on my driveway waiting

for the soon-to-be next adventure – a camping trip to Paris – and I’ve only ventured in to collect something I’d left inside since my last road trip. Nonetheless, whenever I do step inside, there is a chemical change that flows right through me, a sense of adventure, a sense of longing to be camping. As part of my work as editor of digital Touring Magazine, I (willingly) have to visit camping and motorhome shows, such as the Scottish Caravan, Motorhome & Holiday Home Show, stepping in and out of tents, caravans, campervans, motorhomes and holiday homes all day long. I get the same sensation – of excitement and freedom. It’s not a feeling I get when I’m trudging along an infinite corridor to a waiting airline, dragging a suitcase, having sat cramped in an airport lounge along with thousands of other weary holidaymakers. Or the same feeling when fighting with an uncooperative keycard to a hotel bedroom with no opening window and a noisy air-con unit. The campervan, the motorhome, the touring caravan is my escape to independent travel. Just as camping has been a part of my life from an early age, it’s been a part of the lives of my three children, too. For the past 20-plus years, they and

“I’ve now racked up a half-century of camping and caravanning, campervan and motorhome road trips, glamping, and the occasional stay in a holiday home” caravanshowscotland.com 11

SHOW GUIDE Loving mobile leisure

I have toured across Europe, from France and Germany to Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, Eastern Europe, Spain and Benelux to Scandinavia, Finland, Russia and the Baltic States, in addition to the UK and Ireland. The road trips have been as mother and son/ daughter(s), with all three children or I alone. Often, we’ve ‘wild camped’ legally, but also stayed in some magnificent campsites and holiday parks. Touring has allowed us so many experiences, as it could for you, from walking on Alpine glaciers to kayaking through gorges, cycling coastlines and cultural and foodie excursions, providing endless options for slow travel. I’m eager to ensure that every child (including the ‘child’ within every grown up!) can experience the excitement that a camping trip or stay in a holiday home can bring. If it’s something you’ve never tried before, you should! Camping is a life skill that every child should have the right to experience. For me, a tent, a campervan, a caravan is an essential piece of parenting (and one day grandparenting) kit, with the opportunity to stop whenever you need while on tour, to have

your own comfortable, private space to feed babies, prepare food, change nappies and place a carrycot. It’s so much easier, especially with multiple kids, than in an airport lounge. It’s a safe, familiar space for children, and that ‘den’ for teenagers. So, while my heartbeat rises when I step inside my – or any – campervan in the anticipation of a new adventure, it’s also the place where I’m most relaxed. I love being so close to nature, waking up to birdsong in the woods or going to sleep against the soothing sound of the ocean. I love the energy and excitement that touring, with or without family, brings. I hope that you enjoy your visit to the Scottish Caravan, Motorhome & Holiday Home Show. If there’s purpose to my words, it’s to encourage you – young families, single parents or solo travellers, as well as couples of all ages – to get out there and explore. Camping, touring and the mobile leisure lifestyle is as much about slowing down, getting to know places and spending time on foot, bike or boat as it is about spending time on the road or on a campsite. Anything is possible. ●

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TOURING VEHICLE Consider the advantages and differences between caravans, motorhomes and campervans to help you weigh up your 2023 choices If you’re considering buying into the mobile leisure market in 2023, you’re in good company – there are more than half-a-million caravans currently in use on UK roads, and 225,000 motorhomes, and the most recent figures show sales at their highest-ever level. Even before considering your budget, the first question is, what’s the right choice for your needs?

How many people will be touring with you? How often will you travel? Do you want cooking, washing and toilet facilities on board? How much storage will you need? How big a vehicle are you comfortable driving? Once you know the answers, here are a few things to consider about each type of vehicle.

MOTORHOME ESSENTIALS SIZE & WEIGHT

BEDS & STORAGE

A motorhome can be anything you want it to be, but the ultimate ‘dream’ vehicle will tip over the 7m-length limit, meaning you’ll need a C1 licence to drive it. Smaller van-based motorhomes still offer great flexibility and are cheaper and easier to drive.

Bodyshape is key – high-roof or over-cab coachbuilts offer extra berths above PROS More space the cab. ENDLESS CONFIGURATIONS A coachbuilt motorhome is created from scratch using an existing chassis and drivetrain, which means everything, even the cockpit, is bespoke. There are fewer compromises to make but also many more packaging options. Choosing takes longer!

COST A top-end A-class coachbuilt could cost more than £100k, but if you can curb your ‘tour bus’ fantasies, there are great options for around half that. Factor in

CONS Price, running costs, licence requirements, manoeuvrability.

TOP TIP

A motorhome is basically a second home. Everything about it is large scale, including fuelling, insuring, cleaning, storing and purchase price. If you’re not going to use it more than two weeks a year, it may not be for you.

Innovation is in our DNA

We know that holiday homes can be better. We get up every day to make that a reality. Based in Yorkshire, we have been crafting holiday homes and lodges for over a decade, creating inspiring spaces for holidaymakers across the UK and Ireland. Innovation is at the core of what we do and our customers are at the heart of our design process. We build spaces that really work and create environments that are built for real life – your life. Novus is a construction process created by Victory that uses technology to improve manufacturing, bringing it firmly into the 21st Century. Think energy efficiency like never before. Think holidaying in a boutique hotel – with no more ‘bouncing’ floors or plastic joins on the walls, as you might experience in a traditional caravan. Think more space and contemporarydesign. Think Novus.

ALL ABOUT AWNINGS A good awning can transform your caravan or motorhome experience, but what type to choose? Most seasoned caravanners appreciate the extra space, utility and weather protection a good awning adds to their camping life. Types of awning vary from inflatables to pole awnings, and from full-size tents to roll-out cassette canopies. Here are a few things to consider when choosing the kind of awning that best suits your needs.

WHY DO YOU NEED AN AWNING? Space is the caravanner’s most precious resource, and an awning is the easiest and most affordable way to add lots of it. The type of awning depends on use. Will you use it for weekend breaks or just a two-week summer vacation? Will anyone be sleeping in it (including the dog!)? Does it need to accommodate a table and chairs for eating? Will you have someone helping you to put it up? How will you store and transport it?

AWNING SIZES Choose between a porch awning – a bit like your front porch at home, allowing storage of muddy boots, bikes and perhaps

a dog bed – and a full-sized awning in which the family can dine and even sleep. These take much longer to erect, so most weekenders settle for a porch only.

EASE OF USE According to The Camping and Caravanning Club’s 2023 Awning Owner Satisfaction Survey, ease of pitching was the main deciding factor in choosing one (followed by precise fit to the caravan, size, quality of zips and fastenings, method of pitching and fabric).

TYPES OF AWNING

Inflatable awnings are growing in popularity. They are easier to erect and less susceptible to high winds, COST although also heavier to The average price of a caravan attach to your caravan’s porch awning in 2023 was £783 awning rail and more and a full awning averaged £1,084. expensive than pole awnings. CAMPERVAN ESSENTIALS SIZE & WEIGHT A campervan is less a second home and more a vehicle you can drive anywhere and sleep in the back of – rather like the original VW campervan. Neither size nor weight should be a problem.

WHAT ROOF? That’s the main question. A pop-top conversion gives extra headroom, but those extra flexible parts can be unreliable. If you want headroom without worry, go for a high-top fixed roof, but remember it won’t fit in the garage or under height restrictors. Or settle for low headroom and

stick with the standard van roof.

BEDS & STORAGE Consider whether a transverse, island, foldaway or bunk-bed layout best suits your needs. If it’s mainly somewhere to sleep, then sleeping space trumps living space. But if you want to cook, dine, shower, etc, then every inch of space matters.

The joy of a campervan is that it’s no more of a problem to park than any car.

Living the Dream Travelling Scotland’s legendary and stunning North Coast 500 epitomises the joy and freedom of caravanning. Touring legend and YouTube star Andrew Ditton guides us, taking in some lovely Caravan and Motorhome Club campsites

A circular route of 516 miles, the North Coast 500 loops around the north of Scotland, taking in the most stunning scenery. The Caravan and Motorhome Club has many campsites dotted close to the route and a slow and relaxed three-week tour with two or three nights at different sites would help make the most of this beautiful region. Let’s start in Inverness, the Gateway to the Highlands, and a few miles out of town you’ll find the popular Culloden Moor Club site. To begin the history trail, we head a couple of miles down the road to Culloden Battlefield, where the final conflict of the 1745 Jacobite rising took place. As well as the battlefield, there’s a visitor centre with an interactive exhibition. Inverness Botanic Gardens is the UK’s most northerly botanic garden and here you’ll discover a satisfying combination of tropical plants in the hot house,

succulents in the cactus house, and native outdoor plants. Stay another day to visit the organic Black Isle Brewery, a few miles north of the city. Scotland may be famous for whisky, but the tipples here are ‘up there’ on the craft beer scale. site – the vistas at each stage of this journey are all impressive. Be sure to take in the scenic drive to the Applecross Peninsula with its incredible views over the water to the islands of Raasay and Skye. If you’re feeling brave, you can always drive over the Bealach na Bà mountain pass — although this is definitely not recommended in a large motorhome or with a caravan! It’s a better idea to immerse yourself in this landscape using your own two feet. Kinlochewe sits on the perimeter of the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve (NNR), the oldest of its kind in the UK. It was established in 1951 and covers

48 square kilometres, encompassing such celebrities as Loch Maree and Glen Torridon, and a mile from the site lies the Beinn Eighe NNR Visitor Centre. Two eminently achievable strolls depart from the centre itself, but for something a little longer and more rugged, you might need to drive a couple of miles up the road to the trails car park at Loch Maree. With any luck, you’ll catch sight of a red deer, sea eagle or even a golden eagle. For a history fix, take a 40-minute drive to the awardwinning Gairloch Museum, which is set in a former military bunker. Heading around the coast to

A drive up to Bettyhill from Altnaharra will lead you to the fascinating Strathnaver Museum, due to relaunch in 2023 after refurbishment. The overriding theme of the museum is the Highland Clearances. On your way back, stop off at the Rosal Clearance Village, where a series of interpretation boards tells the tragic story of this once vibrant village, where the remains of 70 buildings still stand.

Our tour continues in a clockwise direction to Dunnet Bay Club site, a few miles from Thurso in Scotland’s north east. A visit to the Castle of Mey is an absolute must. The Queen Mother bought the castle in 1952 and oversaw renovation of the building and gardens before using it as a holiday residence. It is now open to visitors and the tour is highly recommended. Naturally, you can’t leave the area without a trip to John o’ Groats and a snapshot next to the famous signpost. Beyond the tourism, you’ll find a smart and contemporary village bursting with style and chic design.

6 STEPS TO SAFE TOWING AND MANOEUVRING The Caravan and Motorhome Club will be running taster sessions at the show to teach or improve your manoeuvring skills. Club technical manager Martin Spencer shares the formula for getting it right

1

CHECK YOUR DRIVING LICENCE

Rules about towing with a car changed on 16 December 2021, allowing drivers in England, Scotland or Wales to tow any compatible combination of car and caravan without taking an additional test. For those licensed in Northern Ireland, previous rules still apply, with drivers who got their licence from 1997 onward being limited to a car-caravan combination with a combined maximum weight of 3500kg, unless they take a further test. Those licensed earlier than 1997 can tow any compatible combination of car and caravan. For motorhomes, a standard car licence is all you need for vehicles up to 3500kg maximum weight – which covers most models. Beyond that a C1 licence (or C1E if you also want to tow something bigger than a

28 caravanshowscotland.com

small trailer) is needed. If you passed your car test before 1997, you’ll have these entitlements; if not, you’ll need to take an additional test. Note that further rules apply once you reach 70.

2

FIND A SUITABLE AND WELL-MATCHED TOWING VEHICLE

Manufacturers will tell you how heavy a trailer their vehicle can tow. However, guidance for towing caravans can often be more conservative than this, as their boxy shape and frequent use on motorways makes them a little more vulnerable. Getting this fundamental compatibility right is what we call ‘outfit matching’ and it’s the first step to trouble-free towing. The Caravan and Motorhome Club has a car and caravan matching

service for members if you’re in search of a new towcar. Most motorhomes can also tow, opening up their use to support all sorts of other hobby activities such as boating or amateur motorsport.

3

LOAD SAFELY AND CORRECTLY

It’s important that you safely load your car and caravan or your motorhome. For comfortable caravan towing, in addition to meeting manufacturers’ limits for the vehicles, it is recommended to aim for a maximum towed load of no more than 85 per cent of the car’s kerb weight for beginners and perhaps up to 90 per cent for those with more towing experience. Never exceed 100 per cent. Weight distribution is as important as the overall weight – avoid exceeding individual axle loads and with caravans keep as much weight as possible central and low down over the

axle(s) rather than at either end. A small bias towards the caravan hitch is essential though (typically 75-100kg of ‘noseweight’ pressing down on the towball), as this really helps with high-speed stability. Watch out for overall weight with motorhomes – for quite large vehicles, these do not always have generous payload capacities. With any car/caravan or motorhome that’s new to you, it’s a really good idea to take it to a weighbridge when loaded as you want to use it, to confirm that it’s within its overall and individual axle limits.

4

SPEED

Lower speed limits apply when towing: 50mph on derestricted single carriageways and 60mph on derestricted dual carriageways and motorways. Motorhomes have the same speed limits as cars

caravanshowscotland.com 29

SHOW GUIDE Towing and manoeuvring

unless their unladen weight exceeds 3050kg, in which case their limits are 50mph on derestricted single carriageways and 60mph on derestricted dual carriageways (but still 70mph on motorways). Keep to these limits – they’re for your safety and that of other road users. We see more problems when leisure vehicles go too fast than too slow.

5

MANOEUVRING TIPS

Many caravans incorporate electric motors to make positioning on a pitch or in a storage area as easy as driving a (rather large) remote control toy. However, there can be times when you need to manoeuvre while hitched up. While initially intimidating, that’s actually not as hard as it looks. Take things slowly and use your mirrors (usually the extended towing mirrors that most outfits will require). A little understanding and a bit of practice is all that’s needed, but if you’re nervous or want to develop your skills quickly, then training (see below) is a great idea. Motorhomes are a little easier because they’re not articulated – it’s

surprising how quickly you adapt from a car to a larger vehicle. The high seating position and big mirrors are beneficial, of course, while a rear-view camera can help where you don’t have through vision. Again, practice is the key, or take a training course for faster adaptation.

6

BOOK YOURSELF ON TO A CARAVAN AND MOTORHOME CLUB TRAINING COURSE

The Caravan and Motorhome Club wants to make sure that whether you’re new to touring or a seasoned professional, you feel comfortable driving your outfit safely before you head out on your adventures. Club caravan towing and motorhome manoeuvring courses are open to members and non-members, and suitable for all levels of experience – and you can get a taster session onsite during the show. These are carried out by expert trainers, most of whom are also wellseasoned tourers, so you’ll be in very capable hands and learn a lot from their experience. ●

CLEVER STUFF FOR 2023 Rob Ganley, editor-in-chief of Camping & Caravanning Club Magazine, shares a few of the products, accessories and innovations for 2023 that have caught his team’s eye SMART ACCESSORIES FOR 2023 Energy saving and sustainability seem to be at the heart of many innovations in the camping accessories market for 2023. Awning expert Isabella has launched a solar lamp that’s designed to fit on to the spikes at either end of its wind screens. At the end of the day, with the touch of a button, the lamp shines a warm light on to your pitch. As more and more people get into camping and caravanning to pursue a hobby or passion, there’s growing innovation in making accessories more portable. While inflatable SUPs are all the rage, we were also impressed recently by a kayak that folds down to the size of a small suitcase, made from a special UV-treated

plastic and weighing just 7.7kg (eu.orukayak.com). Space saving is the focus for other accessory makers, too, such as Colapz, which produces a collapsible 2-in-1 water carrier and bucket, portable outdoor shower camping kits and much more (colapz.co.uk). Smart 12V TVs are growing in popularity; they can be operated from your smartphone or tablet and make the best use of the growing availability of campsite WiFi. An alternative to campsite WiFi is a 5G roof-mounted antenna for high-speed internet from makers such as Falcon Technology (falcontechnology.co.uk). Similarly, powerbanks with built-in inverters to charge electrical devices while camping off grid are more widely available than ever,

WHAT’S NEW IN TENTS FOR 2023 Many family tent suppliers are carrying models over into the 2023 season, which may mean there are bargains available. But there are some interesting new developments set to reach the market, too. Cotton tents, in all shapes, sizes and styles – including bell tents and yurts – are growing in popularity and availability. See bo-camp.com Dometic is set to launch a Global Tent range, which includes bush-camping tents with inflatable-tube frames, mesh windows and in-built mattresses. There’s innovation in lighting within tents, such as the Nightlight System from Outwell, which is

integrated into the tent frame and is powered by a rechargeable battery pack. Many tent manufacturers continue to work hard on their sustainability credentials – Regatta is bringing out a range of Evogreen tents made from recycled polyester. They are aimed at the festival market and have an unusual feature – a tag you can scan with the What3words app on your phone to help you locate it. Some tent makers, such as Vango, are beginning to make use of augmented reality – this means campers use a QR code to view a tent virtually in your local surroundings to get a feel for its real-world size.

WHAT’S NEW IN CARAVANS AND MOTORHOMES FOR 2023 There’s been plenty of eye-catching innovation introduced to caravans and motorhomes for 2023.

Knaus, for example, launched an interesting new feature in its top-of-the-range AZUR caravan – a selfhealing exterior surface. The furniture inside is also set at an angle, an optical illusion designed to make the caravan feel bigger inside. Weinsberg Caravans is the latest manufacturer to offer a fully electric caravan in the CaraCito. So there are no gas bottles on board – an induction hob instead meets all cooking requirements. Micro-caravans seem to be on trend and doing brisk business, with funky new models, such as the Mink camper, Campod and Lion Caravans Cub – new to the market in recent years. The Hymer Venture S is one of the first rugged off-road campervans built by a major European manufacturer. It features an elevating roof

with inflatable insulated sidewalls, and a tailgate that opens at the rear of the van to create a sun deck on site. The Bürstner Playa C 500 is a pop-top camper conversion based on the Renault Trafic that features an elevating roof that fully opens at the front, ideal for a spot of stargazing. Swift has launched three new motorhome ranges, including the Voyager, a four-strong line-up of lowprofile coachbuilt motorhomes, all based on the Ford Transit chassis cab, each with four belted travel seats and sleeping berths. ●

Making camping sustainable There are many ways for campers to think about helping the environment. Caroline Mills from Touring Magazine explores the options

It makes sense that a lifestyle enjoying outdoor leisure goes hand in hand with being ‘green’, sustainable and having a healthy respect for the natural environment. We hear so much, with just cause, about the need to cut carbon emissions, recycle, avoid air travel, turn off unnecessary lights, give food that has covered more miles than a student backpacker the heave-ho and tell the hotel room service not to change the bath towels daily. After a while, you’ve glazed over and booked that all-inclusive, cheap-flights package holiday to halfway around the

36 caravanshowscotland.com

world before you can say, “Cherries from Chile”. Camping? Not so. Campers and caravanners resident in the UK tend to stay in the UK for camping adventures, with the occasional hop across the Channel to continental Europe. And by the very nature of wanting to ‘live’ outdoors, sustainable outdoor activities are frequently the preferred choice of the camper. Not to mention that campers often use bikes or public transport to get around, leaving their van on site. Here are some tips for considering the environment while touring:

Above: Some campsites create wildflower areas for bees

SHOW GUIDE Sustainable touring

PICK YOUR CAMPSITE All businesses are expected to have environmental policies, including campsites and holiday parks. But look out for campsites that have gone the extra mile. Perhaps they’ve created wildflower areas for bees, put up bat boxes, provided educational wildlife trails for children, or installed green energy to heat shower blocks. Look out for places that have signed up to the David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature. Launched in 2022, more than 520 sites have made the pledge to help wildlife. Consider staying at a Certificated Location (CL) or Certificated Site (CS). These are small campsites authorised by the Caravan and Motorhome Club and The Camping and Caravanning Club respectively. A maximum of five units are allowed at any one time and facilities are minimal, creating less strain on infrastructure. You must be a member of the respective club to be able to use these sites. If you’re visiting one of the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s own campsites, you might see some new trees planted. The club committed to – and exceeded – planting 2,022 new trees last year as a part of The Queen’s Green Canopy. Or consider joining

CONSTRUCTION AND MANUFACTURE

Caravanning can be considered as a British manufacturing success story with more than 95 per cent of touring caravans and approximately 60 per cent of motorhomes owned in the UK manufactured here. Many of the parts are, unfortunately, not. Manufacturers are aiming to play their part in the environmental debate. Examples include Hillside Leisure, who launched the world’s first all-electric campervan, the Dalbury E. Sussex Campervans has taken up the mantle, producing a campervan conversion on the Nissan eNV200, while Wellhouse Leisure produces a small allelectric campervan, the DFSK EC35 Piccolo. More electric campervans are gradually coming on to the market. RECYCLE As for production facilities, many OLD CAMPING KIT van makers are thinking Camping Recycled green. Recent examples refurbishes tents or, if in the UK include beyond repair, strips Auto-Trail, whose components that can be used in other new production repairs. building in Grimsby

has a rainwater harvesting system that reuses water from the plant roof to flush toilets, a biomass heating boiler fed by wood waste from the manufacturing process, and a system to recycle sawdust for industrial fertiliser. Another example is Bailey of Bristol, whose carbon energy reduction initiatives include covering much of the plant rooftop with solar panels and using renewable materials such as FSC-certified timber sourced from sustainable forests, water-based solvent-free adhesives in the bodyshell panel construction process and recycled/recyclable materials elsewhere within the manufacturing process. It’s deemed that, at end of life, a Bailey caravan or motorhome body is 75 per cent recyclable – and the chassis is recyclable too. These are just two of many examples to be found in the UK caravan manufacturing industry. Make it one of the questions you ask when choosing which van is for you, but also beware of ‘greenwashing‘, where

AT THE CAMPSITE

“MOST CARAVANS AND MOTORHOMES ARE AWARDED WITH GRADE 3 CLASSIFICATION FOR HEATING AND THERMAL INSULATION, THE HIGHEST INDUSTRY STANDARD” companies claim environmental credentials falsely. Don’t forget that it makes practical business sense for all companies to reduce overheads by reducing energy consumption! Caravan and motorhome design can also play a big part in reducing carbon emissions. As construction materials and methods improve, manufacturers can reduce the overall weight of motorhomes and caravans, create greater aerodynamic efficiency when driving (such as lower-profile coachbuilts aided by the introduction of drop-down beds) and, thanks to towing a lighter caravan, remove the need for a gasguzzling tow vehicle. Improved insulation also prevents the need for additional heating. Most caravans and motorhomes are now awarded with Grade 3 classification for heating and thermal insulation, the highest industry standard, helping to prevent heat loss into the atmosphere.

With limited supply on board a caravan or motorhome, go easy on water usage. That way, you won’t be back and forth filling up your water canisters. Use your on-board facilities rather than dishwashing rooms at the site – guaranteed you’ll be more careful about the amount you use. Stay off-grid and use the leisure battery, topping it up with the solar panel that’s fixed to the roof of your van or while you’re travelling. Then there’s no need to use an electric hook-up (EHU). If you are attached to an EHU, go easy on your usage; if you have multiple appliances on full blast, you’ll overdose on the amperage and your neighbours won’t thank you. The same goes for using electrics on site – do you really need to use the hairdryers in the amenity block? You’re camping!

SELECT THE RIGHT PRODUCT We campers and caravanners can also do our bit. Aside from buying local produce, easing up on the throttle when towing and minimising water usage, it’s possible to select greener camping products. It’s difficult to get away from the use of cassette toilets when you’re on the move, but you can select the ‘greener’ chemicals. These satisfy the highest environmental standards and are safe to use with septic tanks or biological systems. Some campsites insist upon the use of these environmentally conscious fluids. You can also opt for vans that include environmental benefits such as solar panels, lithium leisure batteries, LED lighting and shower heads that reduce the amount of water required (and thus the amount of energy required to heat the water). If you purchase a new tent, look out for products that are made using recycled materials (as an example, Vango’s Earth Collection tents, camping chairs, sleeping bags and rucksacks are made from recycled single-use plastics). ●

PERFECT PITCH Don’t even think about pitching a tent until you’ve pitched up to the show’s Vango Village for inspiration and all the latest camping equipment

For those planning a holiday under canvas there’s really only one place you need to visit. Our Vango Village features a fantastic range of tents, awnings and the latest must-have camping accessories. There are many innovative options to consider from leading camping brand Vango, but to GROUNDSHEET get the most from a trip you need to get the basics Most tents have a right. According to Touring Magazine, whatever sewn-in groundsheet you choose, a modern tent is based on nine key (SIG), good for warmth components that will define your experience… and bug protection. But

you can get a separate sheet for very wet locations.

OUTER TENT

On a double-skin tent it protects the inner tent from rain and wind. Better than a single-skin tent, though obviously heavier and bulkier to carry. Bear in mind that waterproofing capability is measured as a hydrostatic head rating (HH), from 1,000mm to 10,000mm, and overall weather durability is measured in Seasons from 1-4 (roughly meaning from beach shelter to Arctic weather).

PORCH & DOORS It’s a porch if it’s just big enough for two pairs of muddy shoes or a bit of extra kit. Any bigger and it’s more like an awning. Doors have two layers, the secondary layer allowing bug-free ventilation and light.

POLES

AIR VENTS All modern tents have them, often small triangular panels in the walls. It’s all about reducing condensation – caused by breathing, wet gear and just-washed pots. Maximise them by pinching them from the outside to form a pyramid shape.

PEGS The harder the pitch, the thinner the peg you need. Usually, you’ll get a combination of small round steel pegs and v-shaped guy pegs. Plastic pegs are lighter and thicker, alloy pegs are light but prone to bending, and titanium are brilliant but costly. Either way, invest in a peg-puller to get them out again!

ZIPS There are two types of zip – a coil zip, which is more flexible on curved doorways, and a tooth zip, which is tougher but less flexible. The stronger the tent material, the stronger the weight of zip.

Made from fibreglass, steel, alloy or air (in the case of inflatables). The easiest to pitch are snap-in, knuckle-jointed, sewn-in poles, but more common are poles linked with elasticated cords, which are easy unless they come apart inside the seam!

GUY ROPES Made from synthetic cord and attached to the flysheet, they anchor the tent and distribute stress from the poles. If you get a chance to choose hi-vis reflective cords, do so. You’ll thank us.

SHOW GUIDE Holiday homes

Boom time for holiday homes More and more families are counting the benefits of owning a park-based holiday home. Jon Boston of the British Holiday and Home Parks Association explains Over the past few years, many of Scotland’s 200plus holiday parks have been seeing a rise in visitor numbers. Whether glamping, camping, arriving in a motorhome or renting a luxury lodge, their experience has clearly been a positive one, as the volume of repeat bookings shows. But BH&HPA-member parks in Scotland have also noticed something else. What they are seeing is a marked increase in families and couples enquiring about holiday home ownership. And it makes a lot of sense. After all, owning your own holiday caravan or lodge means being able to take short breaks and

holidays right throughout the four seasons, subject to the opening season of the park. You get to enjoy the glorious Scottish countryside in all its changing colours and benefit from quieter roads and less busy attractions outside summer. Don’t be concerned about staying snug. Modern holiday homes are extremely well insulated, and often include double glazing and highly efficient central heating systems, which will provide cosy, warm surroundings within minutes of your arrival. If you really want to push the boat out, there are even models with a private hot tub on the veranda! Plus, of

In order to make the most of your leisure home, it’s often suggested that you buy on a park no more than a couple of hours’ drive away. That means you can just take off whenever you choose, for instance on a Friday afternoon if the weather forecast is suddenly

looking good for the weekend, and not have to factor in a long journey. Coast or countryside? Both have their appeals, and BH&HPA-member parks can be found in some of Scotland’s loveliest locations. Having narrowed down your choice, it can be an idea to get a fuller picture of a park’s character by staying there for a few nights in a rented holiday home if this is possible, or by visiting at different times of the week, including a weekend.
