This year Defender Burghley comes hot on the heels of the most spectacular Olympic success by the British eventing team in Paris and we send them all our congratulations. We could not be more proud to be hosting our gold medallists, Laura Collett, Ros Canter and Tom McEwen on Sunday and a celebration of their victory will be a real highlight of this weekend. We are also thrilled that Ros and Tom will be competing this weekend.
Burghley has a true Olympic heritage, and it feels very fitting to remember that 100 years ago, Lord Burghley took part in the Games in Paris and would go on to win a gold medal in the 400m hurdles in Amsterdam in 1928. He would have been so proud of the British achievements this year and so pleased that the sport
continues to thrive. He was a true lover of equestrianism and in the early days of the Burghley Horse Trials, would take all the competitors riding in the park on the Saturday morning before the cross-country began!
Burghley never stands still and after this weekend draws to a close we will be reopening the House and Gardens to our visitors and embarking on a packed schedule of activities and entertainment for all ages and interests. Do please come back and see us to enjoy Burghley for all it has to offer throughout the year.
We could not achieve the Herculean effort that is Defender Burghley without the contributions of the hundreds of people who give their time and expertise to make Defender Burghley the
very special event that it is – so a heartfelt thanks to each and every one of them. And thank you for coming to visit and taking part in arguably the premier sporting event in the eventing calendar.
Miranda Rock President, Defender Burghley Horse Trials
On behalf of everyone at JLR, welcome to the Defender Burghley Horse Trials 2024
We are thrilled to invite you to join us to celebrate our 20-year association with Burghley this year. Through our partnership, we have built truly memorable moments and, this year, we are going even further to bring Defender to life with a fully immersive experience.
For our younger guests we have installed a course for miniature Defender rides, a real family favourite! Perhaps whilst the children are entertained, you can visit our ‘doggy hydration station’ should you have your four-legged friend with you?
But our refreshments don’t end with canine companions, of course! All Defender, Range Rover and Discovery owners are invited to complimentary hospitality on the members’ lawn: presentation
of your key fob will provide you with guest access.
And we couldn’t celebrate our 20-year partnership milestone with Burghley without paying homage to our history, with Land Rover’s provenance being marked with the special appearance of a Series I, a true icon.
As well as our star exhibit, and our most capable vehicle ever –the thrilling new Defender OCTA – taking pride of place on our stand, there’s also an opportunity to see a selection of vehicles from our Discovery and Range Rover brands since we will have the latest from our Special Vehicles ‘stable’ on display such as the recently launched Range Rover Sport SV Edition Two.
We’re looking forward to welcoming you to the Defender Burghley Horse Trials and I,
along with the entire Defender team, would like to wish everyone visiting and competing this year the very best in their endeavours!
Anthony Bradbury Marketing Director, JLR UK
The three-day event is a comprehensive test of all-round ability of horse and rider. It was originally a military event, drawing on the requirements for a top-class officer’s charger: steadiness on parade; the ability to cross the countryside fast in battle; and to be fit and tough enough to continue with duties after a strenuous day
The marks throughout the phases are cumulative and elimination in any one phase brings elimination from the whole competition. The horse and rider with the lowest number of penalties at the end of the event is the winner.
Riding a fit five-star horse, full of energy, is no walk in the park when calmness and precision are required. Judges are looking for an ‘uphill’ outline and lively impulsion, with freedom and regularity in all three paces. While judging dressage is to a degree subjective, certainly the basics of what an experienced judge at this level is looking for should not be in question. Each movement (see page 39) is marked out of ten and these movements are displayed on an electronic scoreboard in the Main Arena, so spectators can see how the judges are assessing the test. The marks may vary, as the judges are in different places around the arena to see different views of the test. At the end of the test, their marks are averaged and shown as a percentage, which is converted into penalty points for the test.
Distance 6,400m provisional
Speed 570mpm
Optimum time 11.14 (provisional)
Penalties per second over 0.4
First refusal, run out or circle at an obstacle 20 penalties
Second refusal, run out or circle at the same obstacle 40 penalties
Third refusal, run out or circle anywhere on the entire course Elimination
Fall of horse or athlete anywhere on the course Elimination
Activating a frangible device, where the dimension of the fence is modified
Missing a flag
The maximum dimensions of the obstacles are:
Height 1.20m (3’ 11”)
Height of brush fences 1.45m (4’ 9”)
Top spread 2.00m (6’ 6”)
Base spread 3.00m (9’ 9”)
Maximum drop 2.00m (6’ 6”)
11 penalties
15 penalties
This follows the Final Horse Inspection on Sunday morning, which ensures horses are fit and healthy to complete the competition. The FEI rule book states that the course must have no more than 16 jumping efforts, no higher than 1.30m or spread wider than 1.45m. Our course here is designed by International Jumping Course Designer, Paul Connor, who is in his third year designing at Defender Burghley. Paul has designed many competitions, including the CCI5*-L at Bicton in 2021 and the showjumping Nations Cup at Hickstead.

She has judged dressage up to Grand Prix for nearly 20 years and has served as a Ground Jury member in international eventing since 2004. She is also a 1- and 2-star Technical Delegate.
Having judged at the 2021 Toyko Olympics, 2022 World Championships in Pratoni and the Paris Olympics earlier this summer, this is Christina’s second visit to Burghley as a Ground Jury member.
Nick is a former international three-day event rider and British team member. As an FEI international eventing judge, he officiated at the Luhmühlen European Championships in 2011, and the London Olympic Games in 2012. Nick has judged at Badminton, Burghley, Luhmühlen, Adelaide and Kentucky CCI5*s, the World Breeding Championships and Young Rider and Junior European Championships. He was President of the Eventing Ground Jury at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Born and raised in Wyoming, USA, Bobby Stevenson was involved in horse shows, ranch work, rodeo and eventing in his youth. After graduating in accounting and business he worked as a bank regulator for some years before moving to North Carolina to begin an eventing business, competing and training horses.
Alongside his riding, Bobby became a national and international Eventing Technical Delegate and Judge. He is now the only Level 4 Eventing Judge in the USA and has recently officiated at The Central American Games, Pan American Games, Maryland, Defender Kentucky and the 2024 Olympics.
Philip has competed internationally up to CCI5*. He is a BE technical adviser and an FEI Technical Delegate. He also works with the Lottery funded World Class programme as a coach and is BEF’s assistant Performance Manager. Philip manages the British Nations Cup Team, as well as overseeing the Equine Pathway scheme, both of which are Lottery funded.
As a child he was a member of the Burghley branch of The Pony Club, during which time he was a mounted score collector at this event. During Philip’s competitive career he rode here in 1995 and 2002. These close associations have made Burghley Horse Trials a very special place for Philip over many years.
Derek is from Carmel Valley, California, where he lives with his wife Bea, both lifelong equestrians. Growing up, Derek competed in many different disciplines: eventing, showjumping, hunting, polo and Jump racing. His international eventing career began in 1977 and he still rides and competes.
In the early 1990s, he started cross-country course designing at local competitions – around his riding, competing and training interests – and by 1996 was designing his first FEI competition. He has designed at numerous 4* competitions for over 20 years.
He started designing at the Kentucky CCI5* in 2011 and was the cross-country course designer for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. This will be his third year designing the cross-country course at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials.
Originally from Hertfordshire, Paul arrived at course designing after a number of years in the sport as a competitor (riding up to 1.40m) and coach. He’s also ridden in dressage to advanced level, and still owns and rides a horse for fun.
Now an FEI Level 3 qualified course designer, he splits his time roughly half and half between designing pure showjumping tracks, and showjumping courses for horse trials. Career highlights to date include designing a Nations Cup at Hickstead, and designing in Portugal and for the former Olympic equestrian venue, Beas River in Hong Kong. He also designed the final-phase course for Bicton when it ran a five-star horse trial in 2022, and for the Junior and Young Rider European championships at Hartpury earlier in 2022 and Burghley 5* in 2022 & 2023.
From Avebury to Lenamore and Ballaghmor Class, Burghley’s Hall of Fame is synonymous with white horses. Stephanie Bateman finds out more
There’s a reason why Pegasus is portrayed as white – grey horses symbolise freedom, courage, strength and purity. Some legends even have them bring good luck. So, it’s apt that the greatest Burghley horse of all time –Avebury – was a grey. The gelding, by Jumbo out of Memento, won Burghley three times on the bounce in 2012, 2013 and 2014 under rider and breeder Andrew Nicholson. His remarkable relationship with Burghley has even resulted in our new restaurant being named The Avebury Restaurant in his honour.
“He was more of an autumn horse, so Burghley suited him,” says his owner Rosemary Barlow. “His relationship with Burghley was very special, and it’s lovely that they’ve named the new restaurant after him. He was a joy and a privilege to own.”
As a master of the Bicester hounds, Rosemary could often be seen hunting greys.
“I’ve always liked them, and
always had grey hunt horses and grey eventers. Avebury was a dark grey as a youngster and gradually grew lighter as he got older. Whatever shade they are, they just seem to stand out.”
Kate Legg was Avebury’s groom during his first Burghley victory in 2012, and remembers him as an ‘oversized pony’.
“He was very cheeky and naughty to catch,” explained Kate. “He got better with age, and by the time he reached the likes of Burghley, he was the ultimate
professional.
“Being in the prize-giving in Burghley’s main arena with him was an incredible moment.”
As far as greys go, Kate admits that Avebury was fairly clean.
“He was always tidy in his stable, and he was easy to bath. But then I suppose greys get used to being bathed a lot!”
Avebury was retired from competition aged 16 and sadly passed away the same year, but will forever be remembered as one of the greatest Burghley greys.
Small but mighty, Caroline Powell and Lexi Jackson’s 15.3hh Britishbred gelding Lenamore (Sea Crest x Karinella) was another white Burghley champion, winning the title in 2010 and notching up numerous top ten placings.
“He loved it round Burghley,” said Lexi. “It’s considered the toughest cross-country course in the world, but jumping was his forte. He loved the undulations because he was so little and nippy, and could bounce over the terrain.”
Lexi took on Lenamore as an ‘incredibly naughty’ four-year-old and rode him until she handed over
the reins to Caroline, aged 11.
“He was always sharp, but there was never any malice,” explained Lexi. “He’d drop his shoulder and whip to the side after a jump which sent you straight out the side door. He stayed that sharp until the end.”
Lenamore was another whose colour lightened with age.
“He was dark iron grey as a young horse, but always had a bright white tail,” said Lexi. “Back in the days of the roads and tracks, my mum could always see me from miles away because of his white tail. Greys have a bit more ‘look at me’
about them and he certainly did. He was feisty and Caroline is feisty, so they were a good match.”
Despite his talents, Lenamore was notorious for his love of mud.
“He would turn into a bog monster at any opportunity,”
Lexi said. “Our farrier would joke that if someone came to steal a horse from the yard, he wouldn’t be the one you’d nick, because he was always filthy – we nicknamed him the pit pony.”
After retiring from competition, Lenamore returned to Lexi who hunted him for a few years before he retired and then sadly passed away at the grand old age of 30.
Reigning Burghley champion Ballaghmor Class (known as Thomas) is another famous grey who has been eating up the Burghley turf since his victorious debut aged just ten.
The Irish gelding, by Courage II out of Kilderry Place, has a great Burghley record. Winning for a second time in 2023, he was also second in 2018 and third in 2019, all under Oliver Townend.
“Grey has always been a very lucky colour for me,” said Oliver. “I have had the privilege of riding some incredible horses and a lot of the best ones have been greys.
Thomas is special because of his talent, trainability, attitude, competitiveness and love of eventing. He is my team mate – we have been together from the start, travelled the world together,
know each other inside out and depend on each other.”
Oliver explains that Thomas was a lot darker when he was younger. “He now has little bay dots that are almost filling in again. He changes colour every year, but his colour is an original, and possibly makes him more recognisable.” He is certainly distinguishable galloping across Burghley. “This is his place,” explained Angela Hislop, who jointly owns 17-yearold Thomas with Val Ryan, and Karyn Shuter. “He comes alive when he gets to Burghley. You’ll never see another horse like Thomas go round the crosscountry at Burghley – that is his forte, although he’s also done fabulous dressage tests there too. I don’t know if it’s because he is grey, but he has so much presence and really stands out from the crowd. We all love him.”
Everyone loves a grey, but does colour really matter in a horse? A huge advocate of grey horses, vet Lucinda Ticehurst believes so.
Having ridden and bred many grey sport horses, Lucinda believes they are a shade above the rest.
“I’ve had many greys over the years and they’re phenomenal horses,” she said.
“With my frantic lifestyle, I should not own grey horses due to the time needed to keep them clean, but I like the appearance of a sparklingly clean grey – they look stunning.”
Lucinda believes that her preference could be due to predisposition.
“If you think about it, certain breeds are predisposed to being grey such as the Connemara, Irish draught and Thoroughbred. Versatile and talented, they are often associated with top level competition. There also seems to be fewer grey horses about in general, so they stand out more. You just can’t deny that white horses have an incredible presence that can’t help but catch your eye, especially when they are flying like Pegasus around the cross-country.”
My Name’5 Doddie Foundation has a clear vision of a world free of motor neuron disease (MND).
The charity was established by Doddie Weir and trustees in November 2017 following Doddie’s diagnosis with MND. It was founded in response to his frustration at the lack of options given to MND patients – no effective treatment, no access to meaningful clinical trials and no hope.
My Name’5 Doddie Foundation has so far committed over £11 million to vital MND research, plus an additional £2 million to support people living with MND.
The aims of the Foundation are simple:
To raise funds to aid research into the causes of MND and investigate potential cures.
To make grants to individuals suffering from MND, to enable them to live as fulfilled a life as possible.

Earlier this year, William Fox-Pitt – who has won Burghley more than anybody else – announced his retirement from the top level. He talks to Kate Green about his record six wins
If Lucinda Green is the queen of Badminton, with six wins on six different horses, then William Fox-Pitt is the king of Burghley, where his sextet of victories, including a year when he was both winner and runner-up, is a record. His winning reign spans 17 years, encompasses the switch from long to short format eventing and
features six varied mounts, from a spooky Arab cross to an Irish tearaway. “Some of them were certainly surprising,” says William, “but it was just their day.”
His first victory came in 1994, aged 25 – no one younger has won Burghley since. “I thought, ‘Wow, I can do this.’ Previously, I had been reasonably well placed at
big events and was used to being ‘jolly good’ but not good enough. Winning Burghley felt so good, I almost gave up!” recalls William.
“I think it will be hard for anyone as young to win now, because the game is less about courage and more about technique, as it is for horses as well, and therefore it takes much longer to develop.”
The talented yet enigmatic Chaka, owned by Sir Michael Turner, was the horse that put William on the map, giving him a first four (now five)-star win. The horse was produced by Judy Herbert (now Hancock) and was second in 1991 with Australian Greg Watson. Despite his powerful engine, however, Chaka had acquired a reputation for throwing in the towel; the form guide billed the event as a duel between Mary King (who finished second and fourth) and Mark Todd, who was eliminated for missing a flag on the roads and
tracks. William, determined to show what the horse could really do, and full of confidence after a second place in the British Open at Gatcombe – then the main pre-Burghley run – had Chaka
on a strict fitness regime: they led from flagfall with a foot-perfect performance. William describes Chaka as “a real man of a horse, a classic Irish galloper. I owe him my career.”
William has described his win on Carol Hudson’s Highland Lad as “one of the greatest flukes ever, a crazy moment.” ‘Monty’ was a highly strung nine-year-old half-Irish draught who had never won a three-day event and was best known for galloping sideways and trying to flatten his groom. “He was wired to the moon,” recalls William. “I took him for a gallop and said to him, ‘Right mate, if you can walk back to the stables without jogging, you’ll win.’ Amazingly, he didn’t jog once.”
Monty was, however, a great jumper and an influential cross-country course designed by Wolfgang Feld played to his strengths; there were only 36 clear rounds and 52 completions from the field of 95. “He did a lovely showjumping round as well, which put us in about fifth place, and I took him out of the way down to the trees below the collecting ring, thinking I’d just be coming back to collect a rosette. Then someone said: ‘Come back – you’ve won!’”
‘HE DESERVED IT MOST OF ALL’
The consistent Ballincoola enters the history books as the last horse to win a traditional-format British five-star. Like Highland Lad, he was half-Irish draught, an amazing jumper and a worrier. “He had the same angst in the dressage, albeit to a lesser degree, and the same desire to clear a showjump,” explains William.
“His work ethic was unbelievable. I rode him around Burghley five times and he deserved his win more than any other. Really, he was a short-format horse. He was always in the shadow of Tamarillo and a bit of a bridesmaid, so this was a big day, especially for his owner Judy Skinner, who had supported me for so long.”
‘HE DEVOURED BURGHLEY’
Parkmore Ed was initially sent to William as a ‘sort-out’ and competing was shared with his owner, Philip Adkin. “Ed was another heavy Irish draught type, but he had that relentless, powerful stride. I had some amazing times on him. He absolutely devoured Burghley and I even won it in the showjumping, which is most unlike me.”
By this stage, Mark Phillips was well into his stride as Burghley course designer, consistently upping the stakes and describing his 2007 track as “the biggest in the world.” It was certainly one for the most experienced and the day ended with two of the world’s two best, Andrew Nicholson (Lord Killinghurst) and William in first and second. When Lord Killinghurst faulted in the final phase, William notched up his seventh three-day event win of 2007 alone.
William initially viewed MW Guinness’s homebred Tamarillo, an impudent, light-framed ArabPolish thoroughbred cross, as an unlikely eventer, but he turned into a horse of a lifetime. This was Tam’s sole visit to Burghley, as he was usually on team duties, and perhaps his absorption in strange surroundings made him less cheeky and spooky. The weather was appalling, but Tamarillo had won Badminton four years earlier in a similar mudbath and he skipped through it, one of only two horses (with Barry’s Best, ridden by Rosie Thomas) to finish inside the optimum time. “He was in a league of his own,” recalls William. “The course had been causing a lot of trouble and I thought, ‘What am I doing on a 16-year-old?’ but with his blood and athleticism, he was made for the terrain.”
Such was the attrition that William had two fences in hand to win – he actually beat himself on Ballincoola, the third one-two in Burghley history following Mark Todd in 1997 (Wilton Fair and Charisma) and Blyth Tait in 1998 (Chesterfield and Aspyring). “It was very special that Tam did do Burghley in the end. It was a lovely moment and we retired him on that note.”
Catherine Witt’s New Zealand thoroughbred Parklane Hawk would be one of the classiest Burghley winners in history, making a demanding cross-course look easy and jumping clear in a rain-soaked final phase. He had raced and his damsire was Brilliant Invader, responsible for Blyth Tait’s Olympic gold medallist Ready Teddy. “Parker was a galloping machine made for Burghley, a proper, old-fashioned five-star horse,” says William, who won Kentucky on him in 2012. “The wet conditions in the showjumping were against him, as he was still a bit green in that phase, and I went into the arena thinking, ‘Believe in him,’ but also thinking my chances were tiny.”
The runner-up, Andrew Nicholson on Nereo, was sporting in defeat and described the day as “one of the best finales to a major competition.” William has won more than 50 international events and holds the record for five-star wins (14) but Parker will forever figure in history for giving William his record-breaking sixth Burghley win, taking him one ahead of legends Ginny Leng and Mark Todd. “It will always rank as one of the greatest achievements of my life,” William concludes. “It was an honour.”

4. Every effort must be made to ensure that horses receive proper attention after they have competed and that they are treated humanely when their competition careers are over. This covers proper veterinary care, competition injuries, euthanasia and retirement.

British Breeding
British Breeding is delighted to be able to award a prize to the Highest Placed British Bred horse in the Burghley five-star Event. British Breeding works in partnership with the Olympic disciplines and others to identify talent in young horses and support this talent through a horse’s early years.
Activities include the popular British Breeding Futurity Evaluation series, offering an independent assessment of performance potential in foals through to three-year-olds; the Equine Bridge aims to bring breeders closer to the sport in a two-day annual ‘performance style’ event; the Stallion Event in February showcases the best stallions standing in the UK.
High-scoring Futurity youngsters are also eligible for the annual Futurity Elite Auction of foals to three-year-olds. British Breeding provides support for the Sport Horse Breeding Community. Recent high achieving eventing futurity graduates have included the successful half siblings; Lordships Graffalo and Pencos Crown Jewel, both entered for Burghley this year.
Membership offers a host of benefits – visit www.BritishBreeding.com for details. Before the process starts, it is crucial that the best bloodlines are combined to produce the most athletic event horses with good minds, soundness and longevity.
In the House Arena on Friday, during the lunch break, the British Breeding Stallion Parade pre-sents some of the most sought after, fully graded sport horse stallions available to breeders in the UK (see page 64).
Some of these stallions have sired elite scoring foals in the British Breeding Futurity and we are optimistic that breeders are producing some promising young British horses, set to compete on the world stage.
For further details, please contact British Breeding www.british-breeding.com, Tel: 01903 891637.
To start the process of talent development, the Twemlows Burghley Scholarship of two embryo transfers with a value of approximately £7,500 will be offered to the owner of the highest placed British domiciled mare in the CCI competition at Defender Burghley Horse Trials finishing in the top 20. The prize has enabled owners of former winners; Vanir Kamira (2017, 2018, 2019 and
2022), Classic Moet (2016 & 2015), Briarlands Matilda (2014 & 2012), Kings Temptress (2011 & 2009), Be My Guest (2010), Little Tiger (2008) and Headley Britannia (2006), to breed quality foals from proven competition mares, without disrupting their ability to compete.
Details of the scholarship are available from edwardmatson@ twemlows.co.uk. Twemlows Stud. www.twemlows.co.uk

The Worshipful Company of Farriers Best-Shod Award:
A competition sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Farriers for the best-shod horse will take place within the three-day event competition. The judge will examine each horse. taking into consideration:
• Condition of the feet
• The making (or preparation) and fitting the shoe
• Nailing and position of the clips
Normal shoes and showing plates are equally acceptable, provided they are suitable for the horse/ pony. The Worshipful Company of Farriers will award a rosette, inscribed card and plaque to the owner of the best-shod horse and a plaque for the registered farrier responsible for its feet and shoeing. Judging will take place during the First Horse Inspection on Wednesday, 4 September.
Defender Burghley Horse Trials is pleased to continue its annual support of the ever-popular Pony Club Team Jumping competition sponsored by LeMieux.
The competition will be run in one section for teams of three or four horses or ponies, each to be ridden by a different rider. It runs under British Showjumping rules, Table ‘A7’, Speed 325 metres/min and General Rules for Pony Club Area
PC110 Showjumping competitions. Maximum height first round will be 1.05m, second round 1.10m. Each team will jump the course once and the winning team will be that which has the least number of faults, adding together the faults of the three best horses in each team. In the event of teams having the same number of faults, there will be a jump-off, in which the whole team will take part; should this

produce a further tie, the team with the shortest aggregate time for the three riders with the least number of faults will be the winner. Eliminated competitors will take the worst score for the round in which they were eliminated, plus 20 faults. In the jump-off only, all number one team members jump first, followed by the number twos and so on, until all four members of each team have completed.

Potential to Gallop – Yogi Breisner
The BYEH series encourages riders, trainers and breeders to produce potential world-class event horses that may one day gallop around Defender Burghley
The judges should bear in mind that they are looking for potential for the future. Unfortunately, all too often, the horse with the most potential may not be the one that is best presented. We are looking for an athletic, loosemoving horse with a promising jumping technique and attitude, which, with effective training, will develop physically and mentally into a world-class event horse. All horses have qualified from one of 17 competitions held around the country this season. The final comprises the following:
Unlike a normal dressage test, judges are not assessing the current state of training and marks are not given for individual movements. Judges will have to weigh up the influence of the rider; a good rider
may present a well-balanced, smooth test from perhaps a moderate, unscopey horse, whereas a less skilled rider may not make a good horse’s attributes obvious. However, it is the horse and not the rider we are evaluating. The idea is to find horses with three correct, scopey and regular gaits, while considering potential longevity and performance as a world-class event horse.
Judges are looking for a bold athletic horse with good technique. A horse with these qualities should not necessarily be penalised for knocking down one fence (or a four-year-old having one refusal), providing they demonstrate they react positively afterwards. Especially in the early part of the season, four-year-olds may find it easier to jump some fences out of
trot. Notwithstanding the above, three cumulative refusals or a fall of horse or rider must result in elimination.
Assessed in hand. Judges are looking for horses with the attributes to withstand the demands of the sport in terms of soundness, speed and stamina.
Judges are looking for horses with the attributes to withstand the demands of the sport in terms of soundness, speed and stamina. Lack of quality and other defects that might indicate limited stamina or speed should be penalised, even though the horse may be a nice dressage or showjumping prospect. However, a lack of size should not be held against him/her. Gender should not affect the judgement.
The champion in each class will be the horse with the highest overall marks from these four sections:
30 marks
1. Trot
Rhythm, looseness, suppleness, swinging back, potential ability to engage the hindquarters.
2. Walk
Rhythm, relaxation, activity, ground cover.
3. Canter
Rhythm, looseness, suppleness, natural balance, uphill tendency, potential ability to engage the hindquarters.
4. Rideability/Temperament
According to the age and stage of training and reaction to the aids.
5. Suitability
Aptitude as a young event horse and potential to make a world-class event horse.
JUMPING PHASE
40 marks
• Up to 1m for four-year-olds
• Up to 1.10m for five-year-olds
1. Technique
The horse’s desire to be careful over a fence, taking into account the natural technique (of limbs and body) appropriate for a world-class event horse.
2. Balance
Natural balance and general athleticism/agility (quickness of footwork and lightness of landing).
3. Rideability/Temperament
Rideability indicated by general attitude, reaction to the aids.
4. Suitability
Suitability, type to include scope and range of movement to indicate potential to be a future world-class event horse that is capable of getting the time round a Championship five-star track.

The BSPS are delighted to have a major Final at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials for the Gold Cup Competition
Many of our leading riders, past and present, started their equestrian career within the Society and include Ros Canter, Laura Collett, Chris Hunnable, Nicola Wilson, Tor Brewer, Alex Postolowsky, Sophie How and Sophie Beaty, all members of successful GB medal winning teams.
In addition, Charlotte Dujardin, Nick Schofield, Jamie Osborne, Scott Dixon and young show Jumper, Emily Ward, all started their Equestrian career competing in BSPS classes.
There will be three classes for plaited ponies ranging from 133cm to 153 cm with children aged between 12 and 20 years old.
Competitors will ride a Dressage Test, prior to moving onto Performance WSP judged by Mrs Anthea Derby cross-
country style fences, afterwards, the ponies are judged on their gallop.
Each pony height section will culminate in a showjumping finale which will include a joker fence for extra bonus points.
In addition there is a Lead Rein Working Sports Pony Class
which is a stepping stone for children aged five years to nine years to learn to jump.
Qualification has been gained through for these classes at the BSPS Winter, Scottish, Belsay Horse Trials, Pony Club Eventing Championships and Summer Championships.
Shetland Pony Grand National at 9.30am Saturday and 1pm Sunday
The Shetland Pony Grand National raises money each year for a nominated charity. This year they are raising money for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, founded by the cancer survivor and former Grand National-winning jockey after whom it is named. They do this by taking a team of children aged between 8-14 years old and Shetland ponies to different venues across the UK.
11.30am – Retirement of Atticus, Household Division Charger, ridden by senior British Army Officers on parade during great occasions of State. After 14 years of loyal and distinguished service, Atticus is retiring into the expert care of The Horse Trust.
After the conclusion of the showjumping, Burghley’s packed stands never fail to give a huge welcome to the wonderful hounds of the Fitzwilliam (Milton) Hunt as they parade, under the charge of huntsman Shaun Parish and whipper-in Jake Whalley. This year they are joined in the Main Arena by the huntsmen of five neighbouring packs – Sam Jones of the Cottesmore, James Finney of the Belvoir, Aidan Beaney of the Quorn, Harry Beeby of the Fernie and Lewis Chutter of the Pytchley with Woodland.
1.15pm – William Fox Pitt Retirement Ceremony
William Fox-Pitt retires from top-level eventing with an unparalleled record. He has won Burghley six times - more than any other rider - on six different horses (Chaka 1994, Highland Lad 2002, Ballincoola 2005, Parkmore Ed 2007, Tamarillo 2008, Parklane Hawk 2011), and numbers 14 CCI5* victories among his more than 50 three-day event wins. We are delighted that William, his wife Alice and their four children are here this weekend so that we can acknowledge the great contribution which he has brought to the sportand which we look forward to him continuing as a coach and mentor.
3.30pm – Paris Olympic Gold Medal Winners Parade It has been a golden summer for British eventing, with the British team winning gold at the Paris Olympics and retaining the title they took in Tokyo three years ago. We welcome Laura Collett – who also won individual bronze in Paris, Tom McEwen and Ros Canter to Defender Burghley so that we can show our appreciation for their achievements, and the great efforts of their owners, grooms and British Equestrian support staff, and celebrate with them.

The man who first hosted Burghley Horse Trials was himself a multiple Olympian with a passion for sport, finds Lucy Higginson
As riders and media arrive at Burghley still abuzz with the excitement of Paris, it’s remarkable to think that a century ago, another Paris Olympian arrived back home to Burghley.
David, Lord Burghley (later sixth Marquis of Exeter), contested the Paris games of 1924 to run in the 110m hurdles — the same man who first hosted the Horse Trials in 1961. Then just a 19-year-old undergraduate at Cambridge, Lord Burghley did not progress beyond
the opening round in Paris. But four years later, he took gold in Amsterdam in the 400m hurdles, and added team silver as a member of Britain’s four by 400m relay at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. Even more remarkably, Lord Burghley was by that time a serving MP, and was granted a leave of absence from Parliament to compete at the Games.
The 400m is renowned as a brutal distance. So where did his athleticism come from?
“That’s a mystery,” says his daughter, Burghley Horse Trials Vice President Lady Victoria Leatham. “They were high hurdles too – and he was only just over 6ft. His parents were very surprised by it all,” she confirms. “When he won his gold in Amsterdam in ‘28 he got a terse telegram from his father – ‘Everyone at Burghley very proud’.”
Lord Burghley’s achievements are celebrated in the house in the Olympic Corridor leading to the
Great Hall, which displays his medals, running spikes and more. But his story was also referenced in the Oscar-winning film, Chariots of Fire, with Lord Burghley very much the inspiration for the character of Lord Lindsay.
Lord Burghley declined an invitation to be a consultant for the film, given the numerous historical facts that were distorted for the sake of the narrative. But the famous scene in which Paris 100m champion Harold Abrahams beats Lord Lindsay in a race around the Great Court of Trinity College Cambridge is inspired by historical fact. In fact, it was Lord Burghley who achieved this, racing only the bell rather than anyone else – the first person to manage it – though he
was great friends with Harold Abrahams, who is a central character of the film – “a very nice man who came to stay with us a lot,” remembers Lady Victoria.
Although Lord Burghley did not train at home with glasses of champagne balanced on each hurdle, as Lord Lindsay does in the film, he did famously put matchboxes on top of each hurdle to help him clear them at the right height. “He was a very diffident character and just got on and did it,” says Lady Victoria.
Equestrianism was another abiding passion, she remembers: “He absolutely loved horses, and started hunting harriers when he was about nine. He and the underkeeper would go out together and hunt. He rode in point-to-
points too, though was never a particularly skilled rider – always with a very long rein and stirrups –I’m not quite sure how he managed to get round a point-to-point.”
Becoming a Master of Foxhounds was a natural step, becoming MFH of a range of packs before moving to Burghley upon the death of his father and starting a pack there.
Burghley first hosted the now legendary trials on behalf of Harewood House which had to relocate its own event owing to foot and mouth concerns.
As an ardent equestrian, the late Queen Elizabeth attended numerous times – and the Burghley archives contain her humourous hand-written thank you letter to Lord Burghley after an
emotionally exhausting few days watching Princess Anne become European Champion in 1971.
Burghley is now considered by many to be the world’s ultimate Horse Trial, testing riders like no other venue with the Park’s natural topography, old turf and unerring quest for excellence.
That Lord Burghley should leave such an enduring legacy is unsurprising, for he became an important figure in sports administration, his interest in politics and sports frequently overlapping. Serving as president of the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) for 40 years, he was also president of the IAAF Olympic Committee for 48 years until his death in 1981. But he was most proud of the role he played in bringing the 1948 Olympics to London, as chairman of the Organising Committee. With many materials in short supply after the war, these Games were known as the ‘make do and mend’
Games but London pulled it off to huge acclaim.
“He was immensely well in with people like steel manufacturers after the War – which would have helped him to source things like clinker for the athletics track – and a great organiser,” explains Lady Victoria. “He loved the Olympic movement more than anything and saw those Olympics as being almost the highlight of his life; he felt very vindicated about how well it turned out.”
We can only imagine how proud Lord Burghley would have been to see the Horse Trials thriving as a world-famous event, and to see newly crowned champions and so many other Olympians competing here this year. Having won two Olympic medals, been pivotal to Britain hosting the 1948 Games, founded one of the world’s greatest Horse Trials and served his country both on the international sporting stage and as an MP, Burghley is certainly very proud of him.

We spoke to Joules Founder, Tom Joule to get the lowdown on the last 12 months, insight into the new autumn collection and the exciting launch of Joules Home.
I NTERVIEWER:
It’s been a year since you were ‘back in the saddle’ at Burghley. How have the last 12 months been?
TOM JOULE:
any environment. As with our clothing collections, we consider every element from colour palette and print, to where we can set ourselves apart from other brands by offering a unique design perspective.
It’s been very exciting being back in the business. There’s such a sense of community at Joules and the bond has certainly strengthened over the last few months. Everyone has been pulling in the same direction and we are truly back as a design-led business, focussing on our customers and all they expect from us.
INTERVIEWER:
You’ve just launched your autumn campaign ‘There’s Nothing Cooler Than Country’. Can you tell us about it?
TOM JOULE:
This is a collection that reflects British style and heritage with a well-travelled twist. We’ve drawn on a wealth of different influences from all over the world. Details, prints and colours have all been inspired by distant lands. But as always there are quite a few nods to the equestrian world, too.
INTERVIEWER:
What three things can we expect from the collection?
TOM JOULE:
Quality with impeccable attention to detail, tastefully considered products for time-off moments, and value for money. Quality because we consider every single thing about a garment. The fit, fabric, detail and of course, where an item will be worn. Products for timeoff moments, because I always say, we don’t only design what you wear, we design for the life you live. And value for money because what you’ll pay for an item of Joules clothing will be worth it. Whether it’s a t-shirt or a tweed jacket, our prices represent amazing value.
INTERVIEWER:
Joules is bringing a home collection to Burghley for the fi rst time. Tell us more…
TOM JOULE:
We’ve designed homeware for a few years, but this is the fi rst season that our collection feels truly wellrounded. It includes sofas, lighting, wallpaper, paint, rugs and more. We work really closely with a number of partners that share the same values - quality, nostalgia, and a love for the countryside. They are all truly experts in their fields, and help us create pieces that will bring a country home aesthetic to
INTERVIEWER:
We can’t believe Joules is 35 this year, happy birthday!
TOM JOULE:
Thank you. I can’t believe it either. I think we fi rst had a stand at Burghley back in 1991 and have been here every year since. Apart from the foot and mouth, and pandemic years. Burghley seems like the perfect place to have a little more fun and mention our 35th as like anything, celebrating is better with friends, both old and new.
INTERVIEWER:
Why should we visit your stands this year?
INTERVIEWER:
As we’ve already touched on, a great new autumn collection, a new campaign that really leans into our country heritage and rural roots, and the launch of our exciting new homeware. We’ll also be bringing a rugby game which is great fun and offers some lighthearted competition. And last but not least, we’ve created this year’s official Burghley Horse Trials collection, something that we always love to do.

Many of those responsible for health and safety in particular areas of the Event are volunteers, but this in no way lessens either their responsibility or Burghley Horse Trials’ support for them.
Burghley Horse Trials Ltd retains the services of ACT (National) Ltd to provide competent Health and Safety advice and support year round and to include the provision of a Safety Officer during the Event.
It is the policy of Burghley Horse Trials Ltd to conduct its operations in such a way as to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of any person employed in connection with the Event and all other persons who may be affected by its undertaking. In particular, the commitment shall extend to ensuring, so far as is reasonably practical:
1. the provision and maintenance of plant, machinery, equipment and systems of work that are safe and without risk to health
2. the provision and maintenance of arrangements for the handling, storage, transport, use and disposal of articles and substances that are safe and without risk to health
3. the provision of such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to secure the health, safety and welfare of all persons working at or visiting the site
4. the working environment of all employees is without risk to health and adequate facilities and arrangements are made for welfare at work
5. effective communication channels are established and maintained throughout the organisation to promote all aspects of health, safety and welfare
6. compliance with all statutory requirements and, where appropriate, for there to be close liaison with the enforcing authorities
7. suitable and sufficient risk assessments are made and any risk control measures identified as necessary are implemented within a reasonable time scale and on a priority basis
8. a competent Safety Officer is appointed to advise throughout the year and is in attendance throughout the Event
9. the health and safety of visitors to the Event and its facilities
While Burghley Horse Trials Ltd acknowledges that managing health and safety risk is primarily its responsibility, the co-operation of all employees, contractors, sub-contractors and other external organisations connected with the Event is vital to the achievement of the policy objectives. Furthermore, individuals should take personal responsibility for their own safety and for the safety of those around them. Accordingly, it is the responsibility of all persons to promptly raise health and safety concerns and to report all accidents and incidents without delay.
The Event Director named in this programme has ultimate responsibility for the health & safety of those working at or attending the Event. An appropriate management structure and arrangements have been put in place to ensure that the objectives set out in the health & safety policy statement are achieved.
All officials, spectators, visitors, contractors, competitors and exhibitors are required to co-operate with the Organisers to help ensure that these objectives are achieved and to take reasonable care of themselves and others. Any person who has safety concerns or who becomes aware of a hazard should report this immediately to an official. Stewards and Officials are briefed to conduct themselves so as not to put themselves or others at risk and to maintain control of the area round their location. Risk assessments have been carried out and will form the basis of the briefing of the officials prior to and during the four days of the Event.
Spectators and visitors should ensure that they observe all safety signs and notices, and that they follow the instructions of the stewards and officials either in person or via the public address system. A map is contained in the programme showing the different parts of the event site, the routes around it, and the location of suitable viewing areas.
Spectators and visitors are advised that due to the uneven and in parts irregular terrain at this event, it may at times be difficult for spectators
to move around freely and easily, particularly for some people with impaired mobility.
• A general risk assessment is carried out to identify hazards and the necessary controls
• Signs clearly direct spectators to all parts of the Event site and warn of hazards where appropriate
• Where reasonably practicable, fences and barriers are provided to segregate pedestrians from equine and vehicle areas. Places where horse routes cross pedestrian routes are staffed and during the cross country whistle blasts are used to alert all persons that a horse is approaching
• Spectators are responsible for taking appropriate care to ensure their own health and safety (e.g. by using designated pedestrian routes), and to ensure that children and other vulnerable persons (e.g. disabled, elderly) are supervised. It is a condition of entry that spectators are required to follow the instruction of Event staff, and to observe all signs and notices
• The Event site, including grandstands etc., is inspected each day and where necessary preventative and corrective actions taken to ensure safety standards are maintained
• Crowd conditions are monitored throughout the Event by the Safety Steward and other Officials
• Spectators are advised to wear sensible footwear (suitable for the ground and weather conditions) when attending the event
Contractors and Sub Contractors must observe the requirements of the Event Health & Safety Policy published by and available from the Burghley Horse Trials Office.
Exhibitors are responsible for the safety of their trade stands and the risks that they may pose to other persons working at or attending the event. All exhibitors are required to produce a risk assessment for their activities and the stands will be inspected by our Safety Officers during the course of the event.
Even with comprehensive Health & Safety arrangements in place, it is possible that accidents and emergencies may occur during the event. Accidents involving horses and competitors are well catered for, and the officials will immediately summon the emergency services when required. Accidents not connected with the equestrian competition (e.g. involving members of the public) will be dealt with by the on-site services. If you sustain an injury or require medical treatment please contact an official without delay.
When necessary, additional emergency services may be summoned by the appropriate officials. A major incident plan is in place.
For the purposes of the Event, Burghley Park is a public place and drivers are therefore reminded that some vehicles (including off road vehicles) may be legally required to be registered, taxed, insured and where necessary to hold a current MOT certificate. All drivers are advised to check the status of their vehicle to ensure they are complying with all relevant legal requirements.
All badges, car park passes and hospitality packages are sold subject to the Organisers reserving the right to refuse admission to Burghley Park to any person, or to withdraw permission at any time to remain in the Park, and they shall not be required to give any reason for such action.
Save for the death or personal injury caused by the negligence of the Organisers or anyone for whom they are in law responsible, neither the Organisers, Burghley Horse Trials Limited, British Eventing Limited, the Trustees of Burghley Estate, nor any agent, employee or representative of these bodies accepts any liability for any accident, loss, damage, injury or illness to horses, owners, riders, grooms, exhibitors, spectators, dogs, land, cars, their contents and accessories or any other person or property whatsoever, whether caused by their negligence, breach of contract or in any other way whatsoever. The Organisers shall not be liable in respect of any loss or damage whatsoever arising from the abandonment, cancellation or postponement of Defender Burghley Horse Trials, or any such eventuality.

It takes an enormous team to make Defender Burghley happen each year and we are extremely grateful to all of our volunteers, officials, contractors and staff. There are, however some that go above and beyond, time after time, without whom Burghley would not be the very special event that it is today. Each year we make two presentations the Unsung Hero award and the Lady Victoria Award
William started at Burghley Horse Trials in the early 1990s following his retirement from the Army. The then Event Director Bill Henson said he could either oversee car parking or radios and William thought car parking sounded like a thankless task so opted for radios! What started as William monitoring a couple of radio channels in a small portacabin behind the scoreboard has under his expert guidance evolved into a multiagency Event Control. Event Control may not be the most visible or glamorous part of Burghley Horse Trials but it is the engine room behind the Event. Event Control coordinates the response to everything from a locked portaloo to a major incident. William, we cannot thank you enough for your dedication and professionalism.
Philip has been responsible for the cross-country course construction at Burghley since 1981 when, aged just 23, he took the task on from the late Bill Thompson from whom he learnt so much.
In the late 1980s Philip had the foresight to realise the ground conditions in the sport of Eventing would become fundamental to the progression and continued professionalism within the sport. With the support of Burghley House Preservation Trust, in the 1990s Philip began the installation of a permanent irrigation system that now reaches all corners of the cross-country course and warm up areas with a network of nearly 5km of underground pipes and an automated pump. Today Burghley is world renowned for its footing and was the benchmark for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Philip has also been responsible for the construction of the most iconic features on the crosscountry course. From the water obstacle under the Lion Bridge, the
Cottesmore Leap, the Anniversary Splash, and the Trout Hatchery. There is no end to his enthusiasm for this event.
During his time at Burghley the role of Clerk of the Course has grown enormously. Recently he oversaw a 5-year project to dredge the lake and the installation of over 7km of permanent fibre cable. Having held the role for over 40 years, Burghley has quite simply been Philip’s life’s work. His dedication is visible not only in his continued quest for excellence but also in the planning of his wedding and the birth of both his sons in the autumn, everything in the Herbert family happens ‘after Burghley’.

COURSE-DESIGNER DEREK DI GRAZIA UNVEILS
HIS 2024 DEFENDER BURGHLEY COURSE
Fence illustrations by Patrick Latham
The course starts out in the same direction as last year and once past Capability’s Cutting it runs clockwise, taking competitors over the ‘flyover’ and galloping up Winners’ Avenue. All the
combinations have a different look, there are several new fences and many others that have been set in new locations.
As always there is plenty of terrain, plenty of galloping and plenty of questions. I hope horses and riders have a safe and successful competition and enjoy the course ahead of a good day of show jumping on Sunday.
DEFENDER STARTER (1)
The big log of the Defender Starter (1) is the first of three jumps designed really to get competitors jumping as they prepare for what is to come.
The Quilter Cheviot Picnic Table (3) is a good-sized fence which should get the horses up in the air.
Like the first fence, and despite the bulky presence of Daniel Lambert, Lambert’s Sofa (2), is straightforward and should get competitors warmed up and into a rhythm.
As riders enter the Main Arena one-minute into their round, they will need a plan as they approach the Mars Equestrian Arena Brushes (4AB). They should meet the first of the brushes out of a stride as they ride through the turn. Once over the sizeable
double brush they will have a choice to either go straight ahead to a narrower D brush or take a more bending line to the other more straightforward D brush. Either way they will need an adjustable horse with control to ride either of the lines. How quick they are here will depend on the line they choose.
As horses leave the Main Arena they will travel downhill into Defender Valley (5ABC). The downhill approach to the rails at 5A requires riders to keep in balance and under control with horses on an active canter ready to ride forward. A confident ride is needed jumping in over the MIM rails followed by the ditch on an angle a stride later (5B), and then
maintaining their accuracy over the angled brush (5C). As the rails at 5A are on a MIM clip, riders will want to negotiate them in the proper canter [if their horse knocks the rail with any significant force the clip could break, allowing the rail to drop, and incurring 11 penalties]. There is a longer alternative here, but I don’t see many using it unless they have problems along the way.
Galloping down the lane, riders come to the very large Trakehner (6) over a ditch. They will want to keep the gallop through the turn to power them across this wide fence.
As riders hit the three-minute mark they will travel back to Defender Valley (8AB) where they will come upon a new combination. The half log has a substantial drop and will need the riders to keep their position as they travel down the slope to a left-handed corner set just a few strides away. The riders will need to quickly regain control and put their horse onto the line to have a successful jump over the corner.
Moving on up the hill, competitors approach a new-look Holland Cooper Leaf Pit (7ABCDE). The drop on to the slope is steep, and they never know how big a jump their horse will give them. On landing, riders must control the forward momentum so they can find their line over the narrow triple brush at the top of the rise followed a few strides later by another narrow triple brush on a shallow bend. These are all big jumps that will come up quickly and require a very accurate ride. There is a longer route which will eat up the clock but could be useful for some.
Galloping up the lane they will come to Herberts Hollow where they will encounter the Pedigree Rails (9), a very large oxer over a ditch which should ride well out of the gallop.
A powerful canter is needed to approach the Kayak store that sits at the top of the slope leading to the Defender Trout Hatchery (10AB). As the horses descend the slope the riders will need to control the canter so they can then ride forward up the slope to the other Kayak store which will drop into the Trout Hatchery. As they land in the water, they will need to keep their eyes on the line up the slope to (11ABC) the right-handed brush corner and the subsequent D brush two strides later. Riders will need to react quickly to what is going on as this whole sequence of jumps will need a brave horse that is under control, adjustable and that will hold a line. Once again there is a longer alternative for those that need it.
The gallop up the hill to the Waterloo Plain gives horses a chance to settle before two straightforward galloping fences: the Log Stack (12) and the Horseware Ireland Triple Bar (13). These should boost confidence before the next big question.
Open
Open
As they approach the Joules at the Maltings (14,15ABC) riders will first have to jump a set of Parallel Rails (14) before making the bend to the Hedge on the Mound (15A) which will lead them to the angled set of vertical Rails (15B) and then on to the Chevron Triple Brush (15C). The riders have choices here and it will all start with the line they take to 15A as that will determine which striding they will choose to get to 15B which consequently will affect what happens going to 15C. They will need to be accurate through the turns and then straight to the fence to keep from getting an unwanted run out. There is a longer alternative here which may reduce the risk of penalty. As they leave the Maltings, they will carry on down the track to meet a different kind of exercise.
Riders gallop over a raised, bridge-like flyover before coming to a nice let-up fence, the Pol Roger Table (17).
Just after six minutes into the course, competitors will come to the Rolex Corners (16AB) which they would like to meet on a forward stride. The approach will have them come off a short turn to the first of the corners and then the stride will be a little forward to the second. If they can carry a longer stride to the first, then the distance will be easier and will allow them to hold their horse onto the line of the second corner. There is a slightly longer route here and I could see this being used depending on how they jump the first corner.
As they reach the bottom of Winners’ Avenue, riders will come to the new LeMieux Stable Yard (18AB). There is a gate jumping into the Stable Yard and one jumping out. As these gates are both on a frangible device the riders will be making sure that their horse is under control and in a rounder canter to allow for a cleaner jump over the gates.
Carrying on up Winners’ Avenue they will come to the Pardubice (19). Always a big galloping fence that will allow the riders to keep moving.
Galloping further up Winners’ Avenue should give horses a brief breather before coming to the very large Irish Horse Board Cottesmore Leap (20). It is a big, bold, galloping type of fence which riders will want to meet on the perfect stride.
Just after the nine-minute mark comes Defender at the Dairy Mound (22,23ABC). Riders will want to keep forward momentum up the slope to the Log Corner at the top and then be able to keep their horse together to negotiate the massive Log that will take them down the slope to the Angled Brush Cabin. Control jumping the massive Log and accuracy to keep the line to the Cabin at the bottom will be needed. If horses are tiring, it’ll be imperative for riders to help them out and ride a good line to avoid a dreaded run out.
There are alternatives that allow more distance between fences, all of which cost time.
Immediately the riders bend right to arrive at Fairfax & Favor at Keepers (21AB). There are two very distinct lines through the Keepers Triple Bars while at the same time you could see some slight variations. The quicker way has them staying more on an inside line the whole way while the alternative is a slightly more timeconsuming outside line.
CAPABILITY’S CUTTING (24)
Next, riders must show their horses the line to the straightforward Hare at Rolex Grand Slam at Capability’s Cutting (24). This should not cause a problem but will keep them riding.
Galloping down the hill, the Agria Lifetime Equine Slate Mine (25) is always a massive fence and comes just before 10 minutes.
At Boodles Raindance (26ABC) riders will need to ride the correct line over the two jewellery boxes and then stay positive over the Wave into the water. The drop here is significant, so a strong body position is important in case there are any missteps on landing.
At Lion Bridge (27,28) competitors jump a Fishing Lodge before entering the water to jump the Fish, or alternatively a Fishing Lodge at the top of the rise.

MY NAME’5 DODDIE (29) AND THE DEFENDER FINALE (30)
Heading for home, riders have only My Names’5 Doddie (29) and the Defender Finale (30) before crossing the finish.
It is my hope that all horses and riders have a safe and successful competition, that they enjoy the course and that they go on to a good day of showjumping on Sunday.
