THE HEALTH DIARIES Discover the benefits of fasting for women

As the holy month of Ramadan nears its end, we would like to start our May with an article on the health benefits of fasting on women. Fasting is a practice that has been associated with many potential health benefits. For women, these include preventing diseases, improving brain function, managing healthy weight, and balancing hormones. Disease prevention Fasting has been shown to help preventing various types of diseases, among these is cancer. In fact, it is believed that it aids in cancer prevention and increasing the effectiveness of chemotherapy. It inhibits and suppresses tumor growth by cutting off blood supply to the tumor. The practice of fasting also helps with blood sugar control by reducing insulin resistance, which in turn can be especially useful for those at risk of diabetes. Fasting can promote better health by fighting inflammation that may be involved in the development of chronic conditions.

It can also enhance heart health by improving blood pressure, triglycerides, and cholesterol Levels. This in turn reduces the risk and severity of cardiovascular disease as well as lowering homocysteine levels. Enhancing brain function Fasting triggers autophagy, a metabolic process whereby body cells break down and destroy old, damaged or abnormal proteins and other substances inside the cell. This elf-cleaning process helps detoxify the brain and clear out damaged cells. Moreover, it creates more brain cells and therefore improves brain power. Fasting has been shown to increase rates of neurogenesis in the brain. Neurogenesis is the growth and development of new brain cells and nerve tissues. Fasting boosts production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor BDNF, which plays a role in neuroplasticity, and allows the brain to continue changing and adapting. It makes the brain more resilient to stress and more adaptable to change. Managing healthy weight Fasting promotes weight loss: it limits calorie Intake and boosts metabolism. Many dieters choose fasting looking for a quick and easy way to drop a few pounds. Some research has also found that short-term fasting can increase the levels of the neurotransmitter Norepinephrine, which could enhance weight loss.

Balancing Hormones Toxicity and inflammation block the receptor sites on our cells, making them unable to receive vital hormones. Fasting can repair cells to make them hormone sensitive again.

Insulin, Leptin, Growth hormone, Ghrelin, Sex hormones and Thyroid hormones are mong the main hormones which can be balanced through fasting, which in turn can help achieve better health:

When coupled with a nutritious diet and a healthy lifestyle, incorporating fasting into your routine can go a long way in improving health and wellbeing.

We produce liquid vitamin and mineral supplements that are easy to take, offer higher absorption rates and can be developed in a number of great-tasting flavours. We are particularly skilled at developing emulsions, as well as working with dispersions, oils and syrups Our portfolio of gels can be packaged in to individual foil sealed sachets which are ideal for products such as energy gels, glucose, or children’s supplements, where it can be more convenient to carry a disposable sachet instead of a large bottle or tube. Many of the liquid formulations that we offer can be made in to gels for filling tear-top sachets. These are particularly effective for single-serve solutions, or when the convenience of being able to use on-the-go is important. Sprays may be particularly beneficial for children or older people who can struggle to swallow a tablet or capsule. As sprays bypass the acidic stomach environment and are absorbed into the bloodstream directly through capillary networks in the mouth, they are particularly effective for people who may suffer with malabsorption issues. As well as been more fast-acting, it is argued that sprays may be a more effective delivery format.

every plant cell, and it is made up of fiber-like compounds like cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignins. You won't be able to digest these fibrous molecules since you lack the enzyme cellulase. Cows, goats, and deer, for example, are unable to make cellulase on their own. They do, however, have friendly gut bacteria that create it for them, but humans do not. Despite this, our bodies create all of the enzymes required for the breakdown and absorption of meat, such as protease and lipase. The size of an animal's digestive tract is determined by two factors: its nutrition and gut microbes. The more calorie-dense the meal (as in any carnivore's), the less time and microbial

carnivores' shorter gut. Herbivores, on the other hand, eat plants, which are low in calories.

As a result, herbivores must consume bigger quantities of these foods to meet their daily calorie requirements, and their digestive systems must work harder to extract nutrients, resulting in herbivores having a longer stomach. Humans are omnivores, meaning they can eat and digest both meat and plants, thus the length of your gut is somewhere in the middle. Evidence that Humans are Omnivores According to archaeological evidence, humans ate meat as part of their omnivore diet. Research points out that human predecessors were among the first hunters and gatherers. And that when food

animals and plants were included. Anatomical Features Omnivores don't have specialized storage and digesting sacs like fermenting vats. Vats are enormous chambers in which food can be stored for bacteria to "digest." Forward sacs are found in ruminants like cattle and deer, whereas hindgut sacs are found in horses, rhinos, and colobine monkeys. Humans, on the other hand, lack such specializations. Humans also lack the sharp pointy teeth that predators possess. Jaws and Teeth The teeth are the best evidence that humans are omnivores. Humans have small canines as a result of having a larger skull and corresponding reduction in jaw size.

Canines in other primates are longer because they serve as both defense weapons and visual threat devices. Humans may not require long, sharp canines in the same way that carnivores do, especially for collecting prey and menacing opponents. They do have canines that are pointed enough to tear meat. Food is crushed by the molars and premolars in turn. Intestine When comparing the digestive systems of carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores, we can state that herbivores' digestive systems are the most complicated, with several chambers. Because their diet is plant-based, which is considerably harder to digest and requires more time to process, they have additional digestive organs that facilitate regurgitation and digestion compared to ours. Carnivores, on the other hand, are simpler and less complex since meat is easier to digest. Omnivores are in the middle, meaning they are neither as simple as carnivores nor as sophisticated as herbivores. Plant material could still be digested by humans, but any that isn't (cellulosic material, for example) is expelled as waste. Humans are natively omnivores and have adapted to an omnivore’s diet, according to the facts shown above. A meat-free diet, on the other hand, is an intentional decision undertaken

FIGHT OR FLIGHT What happens when we are confronted with danger

For most of its history, the human species has always been faced with a list of dangers. In the early years of humanity, it was the danger of lions, or tigers.. Now we fear things like robbers or murderers. While the dangers we face as people have changed, our bodies’ natural reactions to those dangers have not. In response to these dangers, the body, and mind created during the early years of human existence a mechanism called “the fight or flight reaction.” To this day, the body still has the fight or flight reaction, although we might not always realize it. It could be the very reason you avoid a certain person or situation. The body deems it to be dangerous. The old saying is that the mind is here to protect you, and this is how it goes about doing so.

What is the fight or flight reaction? The fight or flight reaction is a defensive mechanism initiated by the body and mind when confronted with a dangerous situation, whether it be a real danger or an imagined danger. It also takes effect when we are stressed. It was first brought to attention by Walter Bradford Cannon, who observed this reaction in animals. If the animal felt threatened, that would trigger a general discharge from the sympathetic nervous system. This discharge would prepare the animal to either fight or flee that threatening situation by sparking bodily reactions. He later theorized that a similar reaction happened in humans and had been taking place for most of human history.

What happened during the fight or flight reaction? When the fight or flight reaction occurs, it not only affects the mind but causes a reaction in the body. They work in unison, with the mind sending messages to the body to react in a certain way to help preserve itself. The mind goes through an initial reaction of sending a rush of hormones to the body’s sympathetic nervous system. That will then lead to the sympathetic system providing stimulation to the adrenal gland, causing the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Once this happens, the body will undergo a series of changes, including: -

Why South Koreans could soon become a year younger from one day to the next

Why and how does climate change matter for human health

In South Korea, when a baby is born they are considered a year old. Come New Year's Day, they gain another year. This means a baby born in December would be considered to be two years old in just a few weeks. But this "Korean age" method may soon change as the country's president-elect Yoon Suk-yeol is pushing for this centuries-old method of counting to be abolished.

HAVING A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

A good night’s sleep is essential for good physical health, cognitive performance, and emotional functioning. Numerous sleep studies have documented these facts over time. More and more adults are taking over-the-counter (OTC) melatonin preparations to get a better night’s rest, but some of them may be taking this substance at dangerously high levels, a new study finds. Experts worry that the coronavirus pandemic’s negative effect on sleep has further increased the reliance on melatonin and other sleeping aids A study conducted in 2018 demonstrated that in the United States, adults consumed two times more melatonin to aid their sleep than they did a decade ago. In fact, results show that the use of this sleeping aid went from 0.4% in 1999-2000, to 2,1% in 2017-2018. This raises questions as to the health risks this could present for some people. “Taking sleep aids has been linked to prospective studies with the development of dementia and early mortality. Melatonin is one such sleep aid.”, says sleep specialist Dr. Rebecca Robins.

Melatonin is an essential hormone controlling the body’s circadian rhythms. Not only do these rhythms influence specific elements of a person’s bodily functions and behaviors, they also have a large role in sleep regulation and overall health. Therefore, their disruption can have various negative repercussions, including reduced stamina, stress, cold, and sleepiness. The short-term usage of melatonin has so far been proven to be safe for people with irregular sleeping patterns, such as those work variable shifts, or who experience jet lag, or who struggle to fall asleep. On the other hand, its long-term effects are still undetermined. As the U.S. population’s use of this sleeping aid grows, additional studies are essential to provide informed advice and recommendations to consumers, as well as to study and raise awareness on possible health risks or benefits associated with melatonin. TIPS FOR A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP Take time to relax, Pay attention to what you eat and drink. Create a restful environment, Limit daytime naps, Include physical activity in your daily routine, Manage worries, Stick to a sleep schedule, Avoid technology.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO OMEGAS BY NEWGATE LABS

The relationship between diet and disease has long been established, with epidemiological and clinical evidence affirming the role of certain dietary fatty acid classes in disease pathogenesis. Different fatty acids may exhibit beneficial or deleterious effects, with implications for disease progression or prevention. In conjunction with other fatty acids, the omega fatty acids act as independent, yet synergistic, lipid molecules that interact with other biomolecules within the cellular ecosystem to differentiate the critical role of these fatty acids in homeostasis and overall health.

What are omega fatty acids? Omega fatty acids are the "good guys" in the family of fats that are required by our body. The human body cannot prepare some of these fats, and therefore, we need to have them as a part of our diet or as supplements. All fatty acids that bear the "omega" label are unsaturated, containing one or more double bonds and are present in a liquid form at normal room temperature. Omega fatty acids are classified according to the location of the first double bond. Unsaturated fatty acids are further classified as either monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) because they have only one double bond (omega-7 and -9 fats) or polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) because they have more than one double bond (omega-3 and -6 fats).

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Scientists have been interested in omega-3 fatty acids since the 1970s when they studied the diets of the Inuits of Greenland. Compared with Danish controls, the Inuit subjects suffered from heart attacks and diabetes at one-tenth the rate. Studies point to omega-3 fatty acids from the Inuit population’s traditional marine-based diet as cardioprotective.

What makes omega-3 fatty acids special? Omega-3 fatty acids are an integral part of cell membranes and affect the function of cell receptors in these membranes. They are the starting point for making hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls, and inflammation. They also bind to receptors in cells that regulate genetic function. Likely due to these effects, Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to help prevent heart disease and stroke, control eczema and rheumatoid arthritis, and play protective roles in cancer and other conditions.

Omega-6 Fatty Acids Omega-6 fatty acids are necessary for human health, but the body cannot make them. You have to get them through food. Along with omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function and normal growth and development. As a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), Omega-6 fatty acids

help stimulate skin and hair growth, maintain bone health, regulate metabolism, and maintain the reproductive system

What makes omega-6 fatty acids special? Generally, Omega-6s are considered beneficial for heart and vascular health because they support healthy levels of LDL and HDL cholesterol. They also play a role in blood sugar regulation by promoting cells' sensitivity to insulin, which is important for metabolic health. Omega-6s have an important role in our immune system. They are critical for helping cells mount an immune response when needed. They also help keep the blood from clotting too fast or too slowly. Though it might sound bad that Omega-6s are the building blocks of inflammatory markers, these pathways are an important defense mechanism that is used to help us regenerate and heal. In addition to these functions, Omega-6 fatty acids are even involved in maintaining bone, reproductive, and brain health, hair growth, and overall growth.

Why do Omega-6s get a bad reputation? Omega-6 fatty acids are important for many healthy body functions, but there are a couple of layers beneath their not-so-shiny reputation. Throughout human history, our diet consisted of a ratio of Omega-6s to Omega-3s somewhere around 2:1 or 1:1. Maintaining the proper balance of these two types of Omegas is necessary for health. However, the average Western diet has strayed far (and we mean far) from that ratio, surpassing an alarming 15:1 or some estimates say 20:1. The reason for this extreme shift? The rise of highly processed foods and thus our intake of Omega-6s As with anything, too much of something good can become bad. It's when we have too much Omega-6 compared to Omega-3 that it becomes a problem. When this happens, Omega-6 essentially gets in the way of the wonderful anti-inflammatory properties of Omega-3. They're counterproductive, basically. Another layer of the issue here is that many of the Omega-6s we consume are heated (the vast majority of fried foods are fried in oils rich in Omega-6s). When these oils are heated too high, they oxidize and may even be transformed into trans fats. Plus, consuming oxidized food compounds is a bad idea all around

“ “

As with anything, too much of something good can become bad. It's when we have too much Omega-6 compared to richOmega-3 in vitamin Cbecomes could potentially that it a problem.

A diet slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration and reduce the risk of cataracts.

”

”

How to get your Omegas in balance? Of course, minimizing your intake of fried and highly processed foods is a good move for your health for more reasons than just cutting back on omega-6s (i.e., maintaining gut health, blood sugar, and more). As a general rule of thumb, stick to a maximum of 1 to 2 tablespoons of foods containing omega-6s per day. That might look like eating an ounce of sunflower seeds, and when cooking, a modest amount (i.e., a tablespoon) of sunflower oil is enough. Other oils to limit include corn oil, soybean oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, and grapeseed oil. Whenever possible, opt for cooking oils lower in Omega-6s, such as olive, avocado, and coconut oils. Leave your omega-6 intake alone and increase your intake of 'fatty' or 'oily' fish sources, like anchovies, salmon, sardines, herring, and albacore (white) tuna, in order to tip the scales back into a better balance of Omega-6s to Omega-3s,

What Are Omega-9 Fatty Acids? Omega-9 fatty acids are monounsaturated fatty acids that aren’t strictly essential. Our bodies can produce them. They are the most abundant fats in most cells in the body. Consuming foods rich in omega-9 fatty acids over other types of fats can have a range of health benefits. Omega-9 fatty acids are more heat stable than omega-3 and omega-6, making them much more suitable for cooking.

What Are the Health Benefits of Omega-9 Fatty Acids? Omega-9 fatty acids are healthy and reduce risks of cardiovascular disease. In the absence of Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, our body uses Omega-9, although it isn’t as efficient.

What are Omega-3, 6, and 9 Fatty Acid Supplements? With many benefits for all stages of life, Omega-3, 6, and 9 are vital for the human body, and our body cannot make all that’s needed-we need to get them from external sources. It’s a well-researched fact that the western diet doesn’t fulfill Omega-3 essential fat requirements, making the supplement form of each of these essential fatty acids a necessity. Omega-3 and Omega-6 are needed for performing fundamental body functions and are important structural components for cell membranes. Omega-3, 6, and 9 supplements benefit from the benefits provided by individual fatty acids. They offer an adequate and balanced amount of all three types of fatty acids to help us stay healthy. These supplements can be effective for overall well-being and help: Maintain good cholesterol levels. Maintain your cardiovascular health. Improve the circulation of blood and lymph. Keep the skin healthy and glowing. Improve brain function Improve mood. Support for healthy growth and development. -

This might lead to a natural question... Why not just take these three supplements separately and reap the benefits? There’s a catch! You need to take these fatty acids in the right proportion, and yes, it matters the most! The ideal omega-3, 6, and 9 proportions are 2:1:1 and are offered by supplements

Supplement what your diet is missing We have explained the reason for the omega 3-6-9 supplement: Since the proper ratio is so important, why not supplement at that ratio? But the truth is that the only thing wrong with most people's omega fat ratio is too little omega-3s. Supplementing with omega-6s, even in a 3-6-9, will only further reinforce the bad ratio for them. After all, omega-3-6-9 supplements typically contain only 10-20% of the omega-3 fatty acids found in omega-3 fish oil supplements. As a result, it is reasonable to avoid omega-6 and omega-9 supplements in favor of supplementing with omega-3, such as fish oil. In addition to the regular use of olive oil for cooking and in salad dressings, if you do this, you'll get the proper ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats and still take in adequate amounts of omega-9 fatty acids. Plus, you'll get all the benefits that come with all these fats. At Newgate Labs, we make sure our supplements have the perfect balance and amount of Omegas and fatty acids, to optimize their beneficial effects and give you top quality supplement for everyday life.

April is IBS Awareness Month Did you know that 1 in 5 of us suffer with IBS? It’s extremely common and yet can be so difficult to “fix” as there can be so many different triggers. Once other GI conditions and allergies such as Coeliac disease have been ruled out by the doctor, and IBS has been diagnosed, I work closely with clients to identify their unique triggers so they can learn how to best manage their symptoms.

So what is IBS? IBS stands for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. IBS is considered a functional disorder of the gut-brain connection. Functional meaning that there aren’t any structural abnormalities in the bowels of people with diagnosed IBS. This can prove very difficult to treat as there often isn’t anything to see. For diagnosed IBS, symptoms are chronic, meaning the person has been living with their digestive issues for at least 3 months.

Symptoms include gas, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation. Some people have classified IBS-D symptoms (where diarrhoea is more prominent) IBS-C (where constipation is more prominent) or IBS-M (where both diarrhoea and constipation occur.)

How do you get IBS? People can develop IBS for many different reasons. Post infectious IBS is common, as well as surgeries or even stress. Anything that alters the microbiome can trigger chronic IBS, as well as anything that interferes with the communication pathways between the gut and the brain. People with IBS have disruption of their gut-brain axis, meaning the gut and the brain aren’t communicating with each other like they should. This can cause chronic IBS symptoms, and may take years to rewire these communication pathways.

What can you do if you have IBS? Although there isn’t exactly a CURE for IBS, there are tools that can be very helpful for those suffering. Working with a healthcare professional will be very helpful if you’re feeling stuck and needing support. Together you will identify food triggers and maybe try the FODMAP diet (designed specifically for people with IBS). You will learn about stress and lifestyle management techniques and could even try gut-directed hypnotherapy. You will most likely grow out of your symptoms, just as you grew into them. But I appreciate that IBS does affect quality of life, confidence, and happiness. So act now. Tune into your body, find out what its asking for, what your triggers are and live a life free from IBS. UK ADULTS HAVE A HARD TIME COMMITTING TO DIET PLANS A recent survey has revealed that when they start a diet or new fitness plan, half of Britons expect that they will fail. From a pool of 2,000 surveyed adults, 32% said they thought they would never succeed at maintaining an exercise plan, while 28% felt that eating healthy or losing weight was something impossible to achieve. Those among them who tried to modify their eating habits gave up after 11 days, while 1 in 10 completely quit within 48 hours. The poll revealed a multitude of reasons for such behaviour. Among them was the fact that many people go “cold turkey” and completely stop indulging in their favourite meals, or often set unachievable and unrealistic goals. Another reported reason was stress and the feeling that they lacked a support system that could help them see their diet through. Many survey participants further explained that whenever they decided to cut on certain foods, their craving for these foods multiplied. Another pattern widely reported among the survey participants was that they would abandon any health plan they had started after the first setback, such as going out and indulging in junk food. Impatience and the expectation that they will get quick results was also found to be a factor that would demotivate people from sticking with their lifestyle changes. Comparing oneself to others who seemed to be more successful in their endeavour was also a source of disappointment and discouragement.
