With six beautiful States to choose from we realized that we haven’t hosted an event of this magnitude in the State of Maine in a very long time. Since owner Jeff Daigle of Foreside Fitness & Tennis in Falmouth ME graciuosly offered his facility we couldn’t say no to such a generous offer. In addition we secured the fantastic Sable Oaks Marriott in Portland ME as our official hotel.

So the stage is set with top speakers, exciting vendors, delicious foods, and much, much more. As always the key to the succes of such an event will be your enthusiastic participation. Without you it wouldn’t be as much fun!

My version of success: • Junior Program Mission Statement: Have a substantial amount of junior tennis players that can play a functional level of tennis. This includes: Can execute effectively a full swing on their ground strokes and serve. Recover to the middle of the court after each shot, with side shuffle steps if possible.

Capable of playing matches without supervision.

Program goals and objectives Short term • Expansion (or retention) Participation.

Jeff Bearup Managing Partner Crosscourt Consulting Jeff Bearup is the managing partner of Crosscourt Consulting, a division of Donovan Tennis Strategies. Crosscourt Consulting provides families, players, coaches, programs and academies with services such as goal setting, schedule planning, developmental planning, periodization schedules, parent education and support. Jeff was the founder of the New England Academy of Tennis, has has coached multiple national champions, is a USTA National Faculty Coach, recipient of the USPTA National Industry Excellence Award, a Consultant to China Tennis, and is the current Chair of the USTA Coaches Commission. Jeff will be inducted into the USTA Hall of Fame in Newport, RI this June.

Bill Mountford Senior Racquet Director / USPTA National Board Bill Mountford has spent his professional career working in tennis. He is currently the Senior Racquets Director at Chelsea Piers Connecticut. Prior to this role, Bill worked for the United States Tennis Association in a variety of leadership roles, including overseeing national competition and junior tournaments, Market Development (with focus on 10 & Under Tennis and collegiate tennis), and (from 2001-07) as the director of tennis at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. A USPTA New England member, Bill played college tennis while attending Boston University, and competed in Futures-level professional tournaments after graduation. Seymour Rifkin Founder IPTPA Seymour Rifkind (rif) is the founder of IPTPA (International Pickleball Teaching Professional Organization), the Pickleball Hall of Fame and the World Pickleball Federation. Traci Green Sheila Kelly Palandjian Endowed Head Women’s Tennis Coach Harvard University Traci Grreen organized one of the biggest turnarounds in Harvard history when she guided the Crimson to the Ivy League Title and regained national prominence. Green led Harvard to earn the programs 18th Ivy League title in 2009 and 19th in 2017. Prior to Harvard Green spent three years as the Head Women's Tennis Coach at Temple University, leading the Owls to their first National ranking in program history. Green's success as a coach follows a highly successful career as an undergraduate at the University of Florida. She was a member of the Gators' 1998 NCAA championship team and was ranked as high as No. 5 nationally in doubles and No. 12 in singles during the 1999-2000 seasons. Green enjoys giving back in her spare time, and serves on several boards and is currently Board Chair of Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center, and a member of various USTA National Committees.

College Practice Drills and Matches with a Mindfulness Approach

1.Drilling vs Playing and Team vs Me mindset 2.Team based drills are different for everyone and so is competition 3. What is Mindfulness? It’s not meditation 4.Know the Characters on your team 1st and each day 5.Focus on getting 1% Better and not 365% better each day 6.Do drills to get your team thinking as a team, yet stay competitive 7.Examples of some drills and how to incorporate understanding our thoughts and emotions:

Warm up, z-ball extravaganza, speed football explosion, circle up, control drills, volley to volley, doubles hot seat, up the river down the river with specific constraints (whisper strategy to one player), find the ground, “Yale target” drill, “Harvard Drill”, deep target focus drill with ball castle, Team serve it out (pressure drill), team debrief at the end of practice (ask questions and get feedback) * if someone can’t play in practice or a match give them a role if possible. Scorekeeper, feeder, video, cheering, student coach etc…

Coaching a College Team with Mindfulness Approach

1.

Set Aside Some Time: Like we already mentioned, having time and space plotted out for mindfulness practice is key. Luckily, there isn’t any need for special equipment.

2.

Establishing the Goal: Teach your team that mindfulness isn’t the same as traditional meditation. It’s not about quieting or completely clearing their minds– it’s about paying attention to the present moment, without any judgement.

3.

Letting Judgements Pass: As we’ve mentioned, the mind naturally produces judgements, thoughts, actions, etc. So, when a judgment rolls through during mindfulness practice, the goal is to just let them pass.

4.

Return to Being Mindful: Explain to your athletes that when their thoughts pass through, the whole purpose of mindfulness practice is letting those thoughts pass and returning towards the goal: paying attention to the present moment.

5.

Believe you can do it: Ensure your players that even if they don’t get the hang of being mindful at first, or if they begin to judge their own thoughts, it takes practice.

They just need to focus on reining their mind back into the current moment after it has begun to wander.
