A DAY IN THE LIFE OF STOCKBRIDGE

Lee Bank Stockbridge branch employees provide support to growing community BY KELLY L. ANDERSON Sponsored Content Senior Contributor

STOCKBRIDGE, MASS. — Many things have changed in Stockbridge and the surrounding towns since the start of COVID-19, but one thing has remained the same - the longstanding culture of community at Lee Bank. Employees at Lee Bank’s Stockbridge branch say that, since the pandemic, they are seeing more people making the transition from living part-time in the Berkshires to full-time. The new residents are welcomed and invited to enjoy the unique character and the close-knit community vibe that echoes through Stockbridge, Housatonic and West Stockbridge. “Stockbridge especially is known for a lot of history, older families,” Stockbridge Branch Manager Jennifer Wilton said. “Our customers here are very routine, and long-term, faithful Lee Bank customers” Wilton, who said she has lived in West Stockbridge for nearly 30 years and grew up in the neighboring town of South Lee, said she wants newcomers to know that Lee Bank can take care of all of their banking needs and also be a major influence in the betterment of the community. Lee Bank, founded as Lee Savings Bank in 1852, operates five branches, in Great Barrington, Lee, Lenox, Pittsfield and Stockbridge. New residents have varying reasons for making the area their next or permanent home, Wilton said. “I think they definitely all enjoy the quietness of the Berkshires and being able to be outside in the Berkshires,” Wilton said. “I can think of one person in particular who moved here with his family and kept reflecting back to his brother and his family living in the city and living in a postage-stamp-sized apartment without a yard for the kids and how difficult it is; so I think that has really drawn people to the area, to be able to hike, and walk and be outdoors. To have that sense of freedom.” Each of the four seasons brings in visitors with diverse interests. Now, with fall in full bloom, people are coming to leaf peep, and then ski season will kick off. “In summer, there’s lots of art and culture events,” Wilton said. “Year-round there is lots to explore here.” Some simply may crave a sense of belonging with a strong community foundation that cares and has a bank

Stockbridge winter aerial view, south-west over Main Street that can handle all of their banking needs, said Pam Boudreau, universal banker II at the Stockbridge branch. “It’s important to have a sense of belonging,’’ Boudreau said. “I love our customers. I love to help and support and guide them, whatever their diverse banking needs may be. And helping to empower them. “We have a wide range of products, and I use my banking knowledge to help them. I love listening to them. We always want to greet them with a ‘hello’ and with their name. Whenever I go out into my community, I am always seeing friendly faces that greet me, whether it’s just stopping off at the post office or just walking down the street.”

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION: RESPITE FROM BIG CITIES There are no hard numbers on local population growth based on the 2020 census, but Boudreau and Wilton both agree that, anecdotally, they are seeing second homeowners making the Berkshires their permanent residences. “I think a part of it is the pandemic because it’s allowed people to reevaluate their lives,” Boudreau said. “They wanted to be more part of a community, and I think they found that here in Stockbridge. We have a lot of arts and culture here. There’s a lot of diversity here. It just feels like more freedom here.” If it sounds like Boudreau is speaking from experience, it’s because she grew up in Stockbridge, moved away for a few years but returned after getting married. Now, 38

years later, she’s still a homeowner here. “I raised my family here,” she said. “I was in banking prior, and I left to raise my family and came back to Lee Bank eight years ago, and I’ve never regretted it. I do find that sense of community and family here. Boudreau talks about her commitment to the community - as a member of the Stockbridge Tuesday Club, the Stockbridge Finance Committee and as treasurer for the Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce - but Wilton is quick to point out that Boudreau is being modest about her relationships with clients. “There are customers who come into this branch who will wait for Pam,” Wilton said. “There could be two other windows open, and they will wait for Pam to go talk to Pam. We joke that her window is part banking, part therapy.” The connections are real. Customers can’t wait to share the joyful news of a new baby or a wedding. But the connection means they also share the other, not-sohappy type of life events. “I can’t think of a business or other bank where you can find that personal connection,” Wilton said.

STRONG BRANCHES, DEEP ROOTS In addition to Boudreau’s service to the community, Wilton also participates in several community organizations and projects that assist those in need. She is on the board of the Berkshire Community Diaper Project, an organization of 100 volunteers that raises money to buy diapers for families in need in Berkshire County because it’s

APPLE HILL DESIGNS

not covered under any other help assistance programs. “It’s been a strange year, all around, because we haven’t been able to be out in public a lot and do our normal diaper drives,” Wilton said. “So we’ve been really counting word of mouth, our website, and monetary donations.” The money raised has helped the volunteers be able to order the diapers and have them delivered. And a local business, Ray Murray Inc., has provided space to house the orders of diapers. “We have volunteers that go pick them up and drive them from Sheffield to North Adams, to different drop-off locations where people can go, no questions asked, and pick up diapers,” Wilton said. Wilton also is involved in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which recently had a walk in Pittsfield to raise awareness. “This was a tough year,” Wilton said. “There was an emotional ceremony they had because I think that mental illness is on a high right now for so many reasons, but COVID really didn’t help a lot of people.”

LEE BANK WELCOMES NEW BUSINESSES, SUPPORTS EXISTING ESTABLISHMENTS Some area businesses, like many others around the country, have felt the financial pinch of the pandemic. “I think, number one, it’s been most difficult for the restaurants,” Wilton said. “They have had the most challenging time. But on the flip side of their challenges, they have been very creative with the outdoor dining or the take-out and just come

up with all the ways that they can stay alive. That’s been so nice to say.” Some businesses have purchased buildings in other parts of the town, and some have simply closed, which may have to do with retirement, Wilton said. “Yes, we’ve had changes on the Main Street in Stockbridge, but I would not associate that to COVID. I think we just have people ready to retire,” she said. To the businesses that are new to the area or considering relocating here, both Boudreau and Wilton said they hope they have the same community-oriented missions as the area’s existing long-time businesses. “There are some real staples in Stockbridge that have been here forever,” Wilton said. “So I hope that they come in with the same sense of community and putting that first.” One example she cited is Williams and Sons Country Store, which is on Main Street in Stockbridge. “I remember going in there with my brother to get some penny candy, and that was a big deal,” Wilton said. “They’ve been here forever, and it’s a mainstay for Stockbridge. It has stood the test of time.” But there are a lot of other businesses that people don’t think about or don’t see because they’re not necessarily store-front or brickand-mortar, she said. Those businesses have seen steady work while others businesses have struggled. “I know a lot of our builders, our contractors, our tradesmen that have been very busy this past year and a half,” Wilton said. “And because of COVID, and

because people have been home and taking inventory and therefore wanting to update and renovate, but real estate has been out of control, and with that comes a lot of business for these businesses. That’s good.” Boudreau said that some bed-and-breakfast entities also have seen a boom in business. “I know some of our businesses are seeing record-breaking summers, like our local bed-and-breakfasts, have had even better summers this year than prior to 2020’s COVID disruption,’’ she said. As far as the area’s housing market, both Wilton and Boudreau said they hope the prices decrease soon so that those who left the Berkshires are able to afford to come back home. There also are people who would like to stay in the area but cannot afford to purchase a home here. “The prices are through the roof,” Wilton said. “I would like to see a lot of our children be able to come home and build a life here. I would love to be able to see a lot of folks who grew up here come back home and raise their children.”mer itinerary, and stop by some of these local businesses …

Peaceful store offers Chocolate & more Peace, Love & Chocolate is a woman-owned business that has been part of the Stockbridge community for more than eight years. When visitors walk through the Rockwell village-esque doors of the shop, their senses are overwhelmed by chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate! Showcases are filled with truffles, turtles, chocolate-covered gummy bears and peanut butter cups. Shoppers will find grab-and-go bags of dark chocolate wasabi peas, peanut butter and dark chocolate nonpareils, milk chocolate sea salt caramels and more. The shop also carries Raaka Chocolate, Tavernier, Mariebelle and Moonstruck brands, to name a few. And coffee from No. Six Depot and teas from Tea Forte are a few of the specialty items. Some have dubbed the shop’s hot chocolate as the “best in the Berkshires.” There are no high-fructose or partially-hydrogenated oils included, and many products are vegan-friendly.

Pittsfield Cooperative Bank hosts Toys For Tots toy drive BY ERIK DECKERS Sponsored Content Contributor

PITTSFIELD, MASS. — Pittsfield Cooperative Bank — The Co-op — once again is participating in the annual Toys For Tots Christmas toy drive, which is sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps. The bank will be collecting new, unwrapped toys at all four Co-op branches: 70 South St. and 110 Dalton Ave. in Pittsfield; 431 Main St. in Dalton; and 325 Main St. in Great Barrington. The Co-op has been involved in Toys For Tots for the past five years because officials saw a growing need and wanted to give back to the community they’ve been a part of since 1889. “As a local bank, we play an important role in giving back to the communities we serve. We are committed to doing our part to help bring a little hope and some smiles to these kids this Christmas,” Pittsfield Cooperative Bank President and CEO J. Jay Anderson said. The Co-op has boxes in which customers and non-customers alike can drop off toys at all the banks’ branches. The boxes will be in place through Dec. 9, although Toys For Tots will accept gifts right up until Christmas Day. In addition to the general public, the employees of the bank are getting involved in giving. Staff members will be buying toys on behalf of the bank, as well as their own generosity, in order to get the boxes overflowing. “I have asked the bank employees to start shopping,” Anderson said. “We’re happy to provide funding to help fill this need.”

LONG-TIME CONTRIBUTOR The Marine Corps has led the Toys For Tots campaign since 1947, and that is supported by the different local

Marine Corps League Detachments throughout the country. Christopher Keegan, a member of Marine Corps League Detachment 137 in Pittsfield, has been running the Toys For Tots program for Berkshire County for the past seven years. Keegan said he has been involved with the Toys For Tots campaign since he first joined the League. He said he was “told in typical Marine Corps fashion” that he would be taking over the Toys For Tots program. He said it’s a role he has enjoyed. “I’ve been involved in the community almost my whole life here. I was the program director at the Boys and Girls Club for many years. I coach high school baseball. And I’m an employee at the sheriff’s office,” he said. As my wife says, ‘when giving a toy, it’s coming with a lit-

tle more of their heart,’” Keegan said. “Plus, all toys stay in Berkshire County,” He said he makes it his goal each year to honor every request that’s made to the program. It gets a little more challenging as the program continues to grow. “It’s gone up a few hundred kids each year,” Keegan said. “Last year, we got toys for just shy of 3,000 kids. We also deal with a dozen or so nonprofits that submit orders, as well as independent families who will register online.” Families who register online to receive gifts will travel to the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office warehouse at 467 Cheshire Road in Pittsfield. Those families must show a form of ID, and then they’ll receive their gifts. Toys For Tots volunteers also will deliver gifts to people who do not have transportation.

THIS IS ‘A SPECIAL TIME’ The toys will be collected at The Co-op, as well as 145 other locations throughout the Berkshires region. People can drop off their toys and gifts at area restaurants, convenience stores, and schools. Some of the local schools even do intra-school challenges to help drive donations. Even some of the larger employers, which normally don’t get a lot of foot traffic, will be doing their own toy drives for the season. “This time of year is special. It’s the sense of community it creates, a sense of togetherness permeates the season and is not lost among our friends, neighbors and employees at the Pittsfield Cooperative Bank,” Anderson said. If you’re wondering what kinds of gifts to give to the Toys For Tots campaign, Keegan said there’s no restriction

on what to give, as long as they’re age-appropriate for anywhere from newborns to 12 – 14-year-olds. “The older kids are into crafts or science types of projects,” Keegan said. “Or any type of sports like soccer, soccer, basketball, volleyball.”

FINDING WAYS TO SUCCEED Toys For Tots doesn’t only get its donations from the toy drive, which is from late October through Christmas Eve. The Marine Corps League Detachments also have fundraisers to buy toys and supplies. In the past, the League has staged a motorcycle ride, musical bingo and a pancake breakfast to help generate donations of toys and money. This year, there are some concerns about whether there will be enough toys

for the season in general, let alone for the Toys For Tots campaign. The supply chain disruption has a lot of people worried. “We will adjust to that as needed,” Keegan said. “And believe me, as a Marine, we’ll find a way to win this battle.” The Co-op is encouraging people to stop by and drop off their donations, even if they don’t have any bank business at that particular time. They can leave their donations in the box or through the driveup window.

The 2021-2022 Cannabis Gift-Giving Guide BY ARLINDA SMITH BROADY Sponsored Content Producer

This holiday season, gift-giving will present myriad challenges. With folks stuck at home for more than a year, they may have mail-ordered just about everything they would want. Or the presents you would like to buy are just about impossible to get with global supply-chain issues. And of course there is the age-old problem of presents for the person who really needs nothing. Theory Wellness, an award-winning medical and recreational cannabis dispensary, has some thoughts about cannabis gifting this holiday season. With locations in Massachusetts and Maine, it is a perfect example of a local retailer PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THEORY WELLNESS that offers products created

through its vertically integrated operations (“seed to sale”). From cultivation to retail, local labor and production make shopping for cannabis an easy task. As one of the first licensed recreational outdoor cultivators on the East Coast, Theory Wellness has products grown on a 30-year-old organic farm or in a state-ofthe-art production facility, so quality will never be an issue. “We have a deep passion for cannabis and the role it plays in improving people’s lives. We cultivate cannabis outdoors in Sheffield, indoors in Bridgewater and produce a wide variety of extracts, vaporizers, edibles and more at our Bridgewater facility,” the company’s website says. Theory’s name can be found across the common-

wealth. The company has a medical dispensary in Bridgewater, a medical and recreational dispensary in Chicopee and a medical and recreational dispensary in Great Barrington. “Throughout our work, we remain committed to expanding the science of cannabis and to work together to further improve your cannabis experience,” said Brandon Pollock, CEO and co-founder of Theory Wellness. A trip to a Theory Wellness is a world-class retail experience, with intensive staff cannabis training, on-site consultations and a holistic approach to hospitality. “The great thing about Theory is that there's a product for everybody,” said Thomas Winstanley, vice president of marketing. Winstanley said. “We always have our white glove consultation sessions for those who don’t really know what they want. You could give them a gift card, and they can come in and pick out what works for them.” He also encourages any consumer to reach out to the customer service department. “You can schedule a one-on-one call to go through your desired outcomes using cannabis, and based on past history and comfort level with cannabis, we'll match you with the product suggestions to enhance whatever it is you're hoping to accomplish or achieve using cannabis,” he said. Anyone can request a personalized consultation at any time, either in-store or virtually through the Theory Wellness website. One customer shared, “Theory customer service is top-notch! Really welcoming and ready to help you find what you're looking for. Online ordering with live chat is a huge plus!”

FOR THE CANNABIS CONNOISSEUR Anyone who’s a regular cannabis consumer will understand immediately that Theory Wellness is the gold standard. The connoisseur who loves a potent flower will recognize the quality of THEORYx – the apex of art and technology. That is, if you can find any on the shelves, given the small-batch nature and limited inventories. “THEORYx flower, which is our signature line, has beautiful bag appeal, high-testing THC and notable terpene percentages,” Winstanley said. “It’s the top shelf of all flower, and it’s a great option for discernable consumers who fixate on quality.” If you’re not into flower, THEORYx also offers a line of vape cartridges or extracts, all of which are produced through a proprietary, oxygen-free, cryogenic cold chain process. The end result is products that deliver an unrivaled symphony of taste, expression and effects. Beyond THEORYx, the standard flower has won countless awards and culminated in a loyal base of enthusiasts. Take it from one such consumer who shared the following testimonial: “Pricing is competitive for the area, [and the] selection and quality is exceptional. Consider this place the microbrewery of cannabis dispensaries. If they have it, Mimosa and Wedding Cake flower are the best!”

WHAT NEXT? from Apple Smoked Sea Salt to Crispy Mint. The flavors balance the THC content for a delectable treat that comes with an easy-to-measure dosage. For stocking stuffers, look for single squares that are perfect on the go or melted into your hot chocolate or coffee on a cold morning. Since the holidays are all about giving, Theory’s newest line of mints might be the ultimate in feel-good celebration. Their newly debuted line, Statemints, focuses on charitable giving in which 10% of all proceeds is donated to select non-profits whose focuses align with the company’s mission. Statemints include inventory that supports One Tree Planted for Environmental Conservatism, National Alliance on Mental Illness for Mental Health Support, and Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, and one that supports Community Arts that hasn’t been revealed because it is part of a secret project.

FOR THE CANNA-CURIOUS “For those who are maybe more canna-curious, haven't used cannabis in a long time or just want to try it in a more controlled way, Theory Wellness offers a cannabis-infused seltzer called Hi5. It’s a wonderful option for those folks, especially this time of year,” Winstanley said. Hi5 cannabis-infused seltzers used fast-act-

ing, emulsified THC compounds that create a more controllable type of edible experience. According to Winstanley, “everyone has that story of trying an edible, not feeling anything, then having a bad time. This product solves that.” The new blended THC approach provides more control over your dosing with rapid expression of effects. Not to mention, it comes in six all-natural flavors, with some seasonal releases like Winter Mule. This holiday season, if you’re looking to ditch the hangovers and find a more controlled way to enjoy your cannabis, look no further. By the way, did we mention it comes in a resealable, child-proof can?

DON’T LOVE CANNABIS, BUT KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES? Even if you have no idea what you may want, Theory Wellness can guide the most unenlightened newbie to products that fit their needs. “For those who just have no idea where to start, they can always reach out to us, and we can help,” Winstanley said. As far as gift-giving goes, a Theory gift card is a perfect option, so the receiver can decide what’s best for him or her. There’s also apparel for the person who is an enthusiast. “That’s the beauty of shopping with us,”

FOR THE EDIBLE LOVERS OUT THERE For those who don't like to smoke but enjoy the effects of cannabis, Theory Wellness has a range of easy-to-dose, cannabis-infused treats that range from chocolate bars to chews. Their gummies come in a variety of flavors, with a range of standardized strengths. If you’re lucky, you might even see some limited-edition holiday seasonals, too. Theory Wellness chocolate bars are expertly crafted through one of Boston’s top executive chefs. The company uses single-source varietal chocolate that is blended with a range of tastes
