Celebration of Life NANCY LOUISE PORTER

Nancy Louise Porter 80, of Venice Florida, gracefully went with her other angels on November 10, 2023. The first daughter was born to Wallace Sr. and Matilda Hitchcock of Sheffield, MA on June 26, 1943. Nancy attended local schools and became the first woman police office in Great Barrington, MA on March 23, 1978. Being the only female on the force, she helped many women in the community. Nancy was vivacious, intelligent, extremely funny, hardworking and a friend to all. She was always the life of the party with her amusing humor and witty comebacks! She met the love of her life and married Paul Porter on October 30, 1981, then they moved to Venice, Florida in 1991 where she worked at Sharkey’s on the Pier for over 25 years. Spending time with her friends and family was among one of her favorite past times along with playing cards and gaming. She was also an avid reader.

Does not endorse products or services advertised nor does it investigate whether services to be provided require special licensing or insurance. Consumers would be wise to investigate service providers.

Nancy is predeceased by her siblings Wallace Hitchcock, Jr, Anita Macchi, Jeanne Rini and her son John Asklipious, Jr. She is survived by her loving husband Paul Porter of 42 years, her children; Sabrina Asklipious, Alexandria Asklipious, Peter Asklipious, Rina Gardella, and stepson Christopher Porter.

271 Main Street Great Barrington, MA 01230 Office: 413-528-0095 Fax: 413-528-4805 ads@shoppersguideinc.com www.shoppersguideinc.com

Besides Paul and her children, she leaves behind her youngest brother and sister Mathias Hitchcock and Michele Gordon. Nancy leaves her grandchildren, Brooke and Tyler Benjamin, Carissia Asklipious, Matthew and Ian Asklipious, her great granddaughter Brooklyn Woods and several nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends far and wide. Nancy will be celebrated in the Berkshires at The Frog in Sheffield on May 19, 2024 from 12pm to 4 pm.

HEALTH, HOPE AND HEALING AROUND THE HOLIDAYS Health Programs Offered to the Community: Fairview Hospital will offer Health, Hope and Healing Around the Holidays, a series of free health programs to support our community during the holiday season. All programs will take place in the Conference Room on the Main Floor at Fairview Hospital, 29 Lewis Avenue, Great Barrington. Reservations are accepted but not required. APPROACHING THE HOLIDAYS WITH BETTER HEALTH IN MIND

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS: A NEW YOU OR A BETTER YOU?

Tuesday, November 28 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Thursday, December 7, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

The holidays can be a slippery slope when it comes to staying healthy and avoiding the overindulgence that accompanies the season. Emotions, stress and even exhaustion can lead us to let down our guard. Join Fairview nutritionist Meg McGonagle, RD, for a discussion about common challenges and smart strategies for approaching holiday eating and drinking events, common triggers, and getting back on track when you slip, to enter the new year on a healthy note.

It’s the time of year we often commit to new goals only to find ourselves with a sense of failure just a few weeks into the new year. Let’s explore and plan for success as you set your resolutions for the coming year. Join Rich Berry, RN, Coordinator of Fairview Hospital’s Life Enhancement Program, for helpful tips and strategies for setting goals that you can achieve, and how to restart if you get off track.

TREES OF LIGHT CELEBRATION: “LIGHTING THE WAY TO CARE”

FINDING THE JOY Thursday, November 30 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. There really is both physical and mental health benefits associated with laughter, fun and joyful activities. How do we find joy in our daily lives? During the holidays, it is especially important to find joy, even if there are moments of loneliness or sadness. BHS Director of Wellness, Maureen Daniels, M.Ed, will lead a discussion over a cup of tea. Together we will explore what brings you joy and create a plan for adding more joy in your life by recognizing the power of simple, small moments that bring joy if we see them.

Tuesday, December 12, 4:00 - 4:30pm It’s the season of light, and no matter what your tradition is or is not, lights are everywhere. We welcome the community as we light a new installation of year-round lighting at Fairview Hospital. Charles Redd, Officer of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion hosts this celebration of the lighting and shares his reflection on dignity and light as we turn on the lights of care at Fairview Hospital and throughout our community. (The program begins indoors but the tree lighting will be outdoors.)

COPING with CANCER DURING the HOLIDAYS

COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS

Thursday, December 14, 2:00 - 3:00pm

Tuesday December 5, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to facing cancer during the holidays. Join Sue Budz, LICSW, OSW-C, and Shannon Wellauer, RN, OCN of the Phelps Cancer Center for a conversation about how to cope with having cancer or how to care for a loved one with cancer, during the holidays. Learn tips and strategies for planning, prioritizing, and taking care of yourself and others during this holiday season. Most importantly, understand that you are not alone on this journey with the regions’ trusted cancer caregivers.

Traditions and celebrations can spark feelings of loss or sadness for many people during the holiday season. Tricia Lewis, LICSW, a health counselor with BMC Healthworks, a member of BHS’ Employee Assistance Program, will discuss the importance of recognizing and accepting these feelings and explore ways to navigate this sometimes very difficult time of year.

For more information, call Fairview Hospital Community Relations at (413) 854-9609. The program is offered as part of the Berkshire Health Systems role as healthcare partner and community advocate for improving the region’s overall quality of life.

This little guy with the “Guy Fieri” hairdo is Gizmo! Gizmo is a 3-year-old male guinea pig who is one of the most friendly and personable piggies you could meet. Gizmo thoroughly enjoys being held, receiving head scratches and all the attention he can receive. He’s first to greet you at his cage door, eagerly awaiting a pat or veggie treat! Gizmo is one of seven guinea pigs currently available for adoption at Berkshire Humane Society, so before you peruse the pet stores, please be sure to stop by your local shelter. The staff is more than happy to educate you on the proper care and needs guinea pigs require.
