FACT CHECKING STATEMENTS ON THE PROPOSED MERGER Fact Check #1: “The recommended model would preserve existing elementary and middle schools while combining the two high schools into a single high school in a newly constructed, state-of-the art building designed for 21st century education.”

PARTIALLY TRUE. New Marlborough Central & Egremont’s Little School staying open is subject to negotiated lease agreements. As all students are mandated in the Agreement to attend the school in closest proximity, with exceptions, Undermountain will have significantly fewer students.

Mt. Everett will be vacant when the new high school opens. SBRSD school buildings will be there, but with few students. SBRSD voters will cede all SBRSD land and buildings to the new district, which are likely each of the 5 SBRSD towns’ single most valuable asset.

Fact Check #2: “Combining our two districts would create economies of scale and efficiencies, with operating costs savings projected at $1.2 to $1.8 million a year.”

IMPOSSIBLE TO VERIFY. These cited savings amount to a small percentage of total operating costs. These possible savings are not in context with likely increases for all categories of operating costs.

Fact Check #3: “Students would benefit from educational enhancements and more opportunities, including six vocational programs and several innovate pathways.”

IMPOSSIBLE TO VERIFY. Currently the two districts offer so many choices of educational programs, including two Innovative Pathway programs, SBRSD’s Early College Program, which will not transfer, and vocational/career training, although few state-aided programs. In the Agreement, vocational education programming is not mandatory, it’s at the total discretion of the school committee.

SPECULATION. These assumptions are based on bigger = more programming available to whomever wants them. Don’t know what will be available. Some kids thrive, but others can get lost in bigger. SBRSD knows each student and provides excellent services in all of these areas.

Fact Check #5: “There would be more extracurricular options for students in sports, music, arts, drama, and clubs. In a combined high school, more students would mean more robust athletic teams…”

IMPOSSIBLE TO VERIFY. Each district has outstanding programming in music, arts, drama, and numerous clubs. Choice-in options provide students with the ability to select the school that best meets their needs.

Athletic teams may have more students to choose from, but that’s available now.

Fact Check #6: “A single district, while still relatively small, would offer a more diverse population of students, teachers, and staff, with greater opportunities for student, teacher, and staff peer support and networking.

SPECULATION. Does bigger = better? Staff and teachers are TBD, so may not be more diverse. No guarantee there’ll be more student, teacher, or staff peer support and networking than what currently exists.

Fact Check #7: The School Committee will be controlled by SBRSD Towns, as they will have 6 of the 11 votes.

SPECULATION. Representatives from the 5 towns SBRSD School Committee don’t vote in lock step now, so why would do so in the new district? Several key decisions will require a majority vote of 3/4 of all 8 Towns or 6 Towns. New towns may join. So much for SBRSD Towns being in control.
