Burning Season is open in Massachusetts Massachusetts Open Burning Season is officially open through May 1st, with exceptions on days where a high-risk danger exists. Permits must be obtained daily online at www.bcburnpermits. com or Great Barrington residents may call the station at 413-528-1319 extension 2 if they prefer to not go online. If you are not burning in Great Barrington, we advise you to check with your local fire department for regulations specific to your town and state.

Open Burning in Massachusetts has regulations, and for good reasons. The most important thing that we would like to stress is at the first sign of trouble, if the fire starts to get away from you to call 911. Quickly realizing that you need help and getting resources coming to you will save your neighborhood.

REGULATIONS

• You may only burn BRUSH! All other materials are illegal. No leaves, grass, hay, stumps, building debris or any other materials are allowed to be burned.

• All open burning must be a minimum of 75 feet from buildings or structures.

• Burning will be allowed to start at 10:00am and must be extinguished by 4pm.

• Any open fire must be attended at all times by the permit holder.

• No person shall set, maintain or increase a fire in open air at any time except by permission.

• You must be 18 years or older to apply for a permit and/or set, maintain or increase a fire once permission has been granted by the Fire Department.

• You must have an appropriate means to extinguish an open-air fire completely at the

end of the day or if requested by the Fire Department.

• The Fire Department can refuse or cancel a permit at any time. (Example: Violation of permit regulations, or change in weather conditions.)

SAFETY

• Keep children and pets a safe distance away.

• Burn away from any utility lines.

• Use paper and kindling to start the fire and add progressively larger pieces of wood. To avoid the risk of personal injury, never use gasoline, kerosene or other flammable liquid as a fire starter.

• Burn one small pile of material at a time and slowly add to it. This helps keep the fire from getting out of control.

• Keep fire extinguishing materials handy.

These should include a water supply, shovels and rakes. Test the water source before lighting the fire.

• Put the fire out if winds pick up or the weather changes. Use common sense. Most fires get out of control during sudden wind changes.

• If the fire gets out of control, call the fire local department right away.

The position requires moderate physical eďŹ&#x20AC;ort for onsite inspections, the ability to interpret and understand regulations and enforce them ďŹ rmly, impartially, and respectfully, a Managerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Food Safety certiďŹ cation, and a valid driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license and independent means of transportation.

The preferred candidate would have strong communication skills both orally and in writing, with the ability to prepare detailed reports dealing with inspection results and correction orders.

Compensation for this position is up to $20.00 per hour, depending on experience, for up to 32 hours a week, and includes beneďŹ ts.
