BornonOctober9,1925inFlushing,NewYork,Eunice movedwithherfamilytoOssiningwhenshewasjust four.TheDepressionyearsbroughtchallenges,including thelossoftheirhome,butalsomanyhappysummersin Becket,whereshemadelifelongmemoriesofswimming inCenterPond,pickingblueberries,andsquaredancing withtheBensonsandotherSwedish-Americanfamilies.
Herloveofhorsesbeganearly.Herfatherwoulddrop heratastable,oftenanhouraway,whereshewouldspend entiredaysamongthehorses.Thatpassionneverfaded.
WhenthefamilyeventuallysettledinGreatBarrington, EuniceattendedSearlesHighSchool,whereshemether futurehusband,JohnRaifstanger.DuringWorldWarII, sheworkedatDouglasAircraftinIllinoismakingairplane parts,whileJohnservedinthemilitary.Afterthewar,they marriedandsettledintofamilylifeinGreatBarrington, raisingfourchildren—JohnJr.,twinsTimandRobin,and Beth—whileJohnmanagedtheMahaiweTheatre.
Foratime,EuniceandJohnalsoleasedtheBarnClub, apopularswimmingresort,wheretheyspenttwo summershostinglivelyeveningsofmusicanddancing. Itwasoneofmanyjoyfuladventurestheysharedtogether.
OpportunityknockedagainwhenEuniceboldly encouragedJohntolaunchanewventure:the Shopper’s Guide.StartinginthebasementoftheMahaiweTheater, theircommunitypapergrewintoalocalinstitution.
Meanwhile,Eunicelivedherdreamofraising,training, andshowinghorses.FromherbelovedMorgansto ArabiansandeventuallyThoroughbreds,shebredand racedsuccessfullyatSaratogaandBelmont.Latershe turnedtowarmbloods,raisingthemforpleasurewhile sharingherloveofhorseswithherfamilyandfriends.
Eunice’sjoysextendedbeyondthebarn—sheloved tocook,garden,andread.Thoughhereyesighthas dimmed,herspiritshines.Shestillplaysherportable piano,enjoyshercomputer,andcanoftenbefoundsitting inthesunwithherafternooncocktail.
Asshemarksher100thbirthday,Eunicelooksback onalifewell-lived—withnoregrets,countlessstories, andalegacyoffamily,friendship,anddetermination.Her familyhasgrowntoincludegrandchildrenandgreatgrandchildren,andshetreasuresthemomentsspent withthoseclosesttoher.
