Signs your dog may be dehydrated

Like humans, pets can suffer serious health issues from dehydration— especially in warm weather. That’s why it’s important for dog owners to recognize the signs when their pup isn’t getting enough water.

The Veterinary Emergency Group says symptoms of mild dehydration can include: • Dry nose, although this also can be a signal of other problems, like fever.

• Excessive drooling occurs as the dog tries to cool down its body.

• A dehydrated dog can exhibit signs of fatigue, including a reluctance to move around much.

• Sticky gums As dehydration worsens, symptoms may include: • Loss of elasticity of the skin.

• Loss of appetite.

• Thickening of the dog’s saliva.

• Gums may go from sticky to dry.

• Excessive panting may begin.

• Vomiting or diarrhea also may occur.

• Dehydration causes the body to redistribute fluid lost, and fluid may be pulled from the eyes, causing the eyes to appear sunken.

If your dog seems dehydrated, offer small sips of water and call your vet.

They may recommend an electrolyte drink like Pedialyte or suggest a visit for IV fluids.

The best way to treat dehydration is to prevent it. Always give your dog plenty of clean water, especially in heat or during exercise.

Cats also are prone to dehydration and can exhibit the same symptoms as dogs. So cat owners also must be diligent in checking for dehydration symptoms in their pets. TF247132

The Van Driver will assist in securing wheelchairs and help carry packages; therefore, the applicant must be able to push/pull up to 50 pounds. The main purpose of this position is to assist in maintaining all town rights-of-way, equipment and other public property by performing skilled and labor-intensive tasks that require the operation of all types of heavy construction equipment, including medium and light duty trucks, power tools and equipment, as well as hand tools and instruments. A High School Diploma or GED is required with a preference for 2 years of construction, heavy vehicle driving or heavy equipment operation, plowing and routine vehicle maintenance experience. A valid Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a 2A 4G Hoisting Operators License is preferred.

This position pays $30.52 hourly for a person hired with CDL, 2A and 4G Hoisting licenses. If hired without these licenses, the position pays 26.05 hourly with the opportunity to work towards getting these licenses.

This position performs professional administrative, day to day operations, fire prevention, code enforcement, fire protection, rescue, emergency medical service, hazardous materials mitigation, and disaster response functions which involves protecting lives and property as well as other duties of the Egremont Fire Department.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent and must possess and maintain a current Massachusetts Driver’s License.

Preference will be given to candidates with three to five (3-5) years of experience as a call firefighter/EMT or two (2+) years of experience as a full-time firefighter/EMT. Preference will also be given to applicants with experience in inspection and code enforcement.

The Town of Egremont is also willing to train for this position with the expectation of the achievement of all requirements within a specific timeframe.
