Staying hydrated to reduce the risk for heat illness is imperative. Water will almost always help people remain hydrated even when working in the heat, but eating regular meals can also help prevent heat illness by replacing salt lost through sweat, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC advises against consuming energy drinks and alcohol when spending time in the hot sun. Many energy drinks contain more caffeine than standard servings of coffee, tea and soft drinks, and excessive caffeine consumption can contribute to dehydration. The CDC also reports that drinking alcohol within 24 hours of working in the heat can increase the risk of heat illness.

Establishing kids' roles in caring for the familypet
Children and pets living together can make for a boisterous but happy household. Having pets is an ideal opportunity to introduce children to some measure of responsibility, and it may encourage youngsters to become advocates for animal welfare. Pets require all sorts of care and companionship. Introducing children to age-appropriate pet-related tasks can set the groundwork for a lifetime of loving and caring for companion animals. Children shouldn't be given all of the responsibilities of caring for pets, but there are some notable roles they can play.
Teach gentle interactions. Toddlers and even kindergarteners may be unaware of how rough they are being. Therefore, they will need a lot of supervision and reinforcement to learn how to be gentle when petting or engaging with companion animals. Young children also may think that pets are toys and that there are no consequences when animals are handled roughly. Parents and other caregivers may need to spend a lot of time emphasizing gentle play with pets. Playing together is a great way for kids and pets to bond and get some exercise. Purina behaviorist Dr. Annie or commands. Children also may be able to do short training sessions with pets, like helping them get acclimated to a new pet carrier, wearing a leash, or even moving the vacuum cleaner nearby so the animal overcomes its fear of it.
Children can learn a lot about pet along to help out and see what is involved in routine veterinary visits. Kids can soothe and distract the pet during the adminstration of vaccines and watch how a vet assesses an animal's overall health. Watching a pet go through a physical examination also may help a child become more brave in relation to his or her own medical check-ups.
Children can be responsible for putting pre-measured scoops of
able to take them gently out of hand.
When it comes time to groom a pet, children can assist with scrub downs in the tub or at a grooming station in a nearby retail store. More hands available can help wrangle a wet and slippery animal, after all. do so gently.
Pets need opportunities to rest, and children should understand that quiet time means the pet should be left alone. Kids can help set up a cozy napping spot where a dog or cat can retreat when they need some rest. With trial and error, family members can see where kids' strengths lie in caring for pets and gauge the animals's tolerance for interaction with youngsters. Pet owners must remember to ensure young children and animals are never together without adult supervision. PE245897
CARPENTER/BUILDER -David Valyou serving MA, CT, NY for 20+ years. Renovations & Repairs Kitchens, Baths, Studios. Old Houses & Barns my specialty. 917-538-1617. davidvalyou @yahoo.com Based in Canaan, CT.
Homeowners can consider these notable trends, which the online renovation experts at Houzz suggest will be particularly popular in the year ahead.
Trends that seem ubiquitous one day can seemingly vanish before the sun rises again just 24 hours later. That's especially true in the digital age, when overnight celebrities and viral videos can be on the tips of everyone's tongue before being forgotten entirely when the next online sensation emerges in an increasingly rapid news cycle.
Home trends typically benefit from a longer shelf life than viral videos and other fads that originate on the internet, and that's something renovation-minded homeowners should consider when improving their homes. Homeowners preparing to do just that can consider these notable trends, which the online renovation experts at Houzz suggest will be particularly popular in the year ahead.
Rounded furnishings: Houzz noted that gentle curves and rounded edges embody the organic modern styles that many current homeowners love. Rounded dining tables and similarly circular coffee tables may merit consideration among homeowners who want to embrace popular trends.
Arches: Houzz cites arches among the more popular modern trends, and the experts at Better Homes & Gardens note this unique, eye-catching style has been gaining popularity for several
years. Better Homes & Gardens suggests that part of the appeal of arched doorways could be their deviation from a more traditional door shape. That uniqueness draws the attention of residents and visitors alike, and Houzz notes that arched windows, cabinets and even millwork details are part of the pivot toward arches.
Stove alcoves: If it's a touch of history homeowners want, kitchen range alcoves might be just the project for them. Range alcoves call an earlier time to mind when wood burning stoves were commonplace. The report from Houzz notes range alcoves immediately draw attention, which undoubtedly adds to their appeal.
Wood for warmth: Homeowners who hear "wood and warmth" might think fireplaces, but Houzz reports that wood elements are being incorporated into interior designs as a means to giving homes a more cozy vibe. Ceiling beams, trim, wall paneling, and cabinetry are utilizing wood to add warmth to a home.
Trends come and go, but home trends typically have more staying power than styles that emerge in other arenas. Homeowners who want to upgrade their home interiors can consider the latest trends and choose those that align with their own personal tastes. HI254743

What do JAMIE WYETH,
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
The Berkshire Botanical Garden is planning some indoor experiences as well as outdoor ones this summer.
The garden will host “DayDream,” a new exhibition featuring works by some of the most renowned names in contemporary and modern art.
The exhibition’s lineup includes works by Salvador Dalí, Annie Leibovitz, Yoko Ono, Jamie Wyeth, Roz Chast, Will Cotton, Ellsworth Kelly and Kenny Scharf. The exhibit is designed to be a “...journey into the artistic subconscious,” according to its curator, James Salomon.
Salomon is the director of design projects at Achille Salvagni Atelier in New York. An art insider, Salomon began his art career in Paris as an intern for Galerie Maeght. He moved to New York, spending a decade working with gallerist Mary Boone before launching his own ventures, including Salomon Contemporary Warehouse in East Hampton, N.Y.
The creators hope the show will have you immersed in the artists’ vision and imagination. The catalogue for the show carries the theme through, with the contemporary artists contributing a personal “daydream.” Salomon thinks the responses are quite revealing about the artists and their work.
The Leonhardt Galleries will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show opens June 6.
