Frequent lawn maintenance is the first step in keeping dangerous pests from establishing a population in your backyard. Grass should be short and free of debris like fallen leaves, which can trap pockets of standing water and allow mosquitoes to breed.

How much space do you have to work in? Are you drawn to the distinctive flavor of charcoal, or would you prefer the ease of lighting and increased temperature control of a gas grill?

Whichever type you choose, make sure you have plenty of fuel on hand before the party starts. Give the whole grill a thorough cleaning to make sure there’s no lingering grease or food particles, which can ignite unexpectedly. If it’s your first time grilling for the season, fire up the grill for a test run a few days in advance to make sure everything is working properly.
