OPEN LETTER TO AMERICA After three months of hearing about “worst case scenarios,” “the new normal,” and listening to Americans criticizing Americans it is refreshing and heartwarming to see all kinds of ordinary citizens coming together to help and inspire one another during a global pandemic.

I came to America for economic reasons and fell in love with a warm, optimistic and loving country that offered hope to a young Irish immigrant. For the last 6 years Yankee has taken out full pages in local newspapers to express my gratitude to a country that has provided me so much, while pointing out what some might not notice, especially during these last few weeks.

For example, a Springfield covid-19 nurse returns home at midnight after a 12 hour shift to see her home in flames. A Yankee Home team member Kara Mainville steps up to take in the nurse’s daughter who lives on her street, who is now temporarily without a home.

The community rallies and comes together to help this family rebuild by generously contributing to their Gofundme page. Americans looking out for Americans.

Then there’s the unstoppable, 85 year old Ruth Willemain continuing to push forward with her dream of building Harmony House, a home where people could live out the last few days of their lives with dignity. Part Mother Theresa, part Clint Eastwood she rallied and inspired the many volunteers at great personal risk. She plowed forward with her handmade purple mask, social distancing all the while. I am incredibly honored to be a part of a truly inspirational person’s dream. The local community volunteering and donating their resources during this crisis is a testament to America.

Cut off from my homeless friend Jake (theJakeStory.com) for 3 months all the while following Philadelphia death tolls and wondering if he made it. Then a collect call, Jake warning me and my wife Anna not to come down. His explanation of what was going on in his hometown, not knowing it was global, warmed my heart, grounded me and made me count my blessings even more.

As Yankee Home has grown over the years we have received many calls and letters from these yearly July 4th pontifications, none more poignant than from Jerry Lucey. Now framed in our office, he wrote an impassioned letter reiterating my views of America. He recalls returning from Vietnam and getting spat on while marching down Tremont Street in Boston. This didn’t stop his love of his country. Nor I guess will a pandemic.

This immigrant’s view of America remains unchanged. While not perfect, this country we call home is still that optimistic, warm and loving place he set foot on decades ago.

Dear Readers, I thought it might be fun to share some of the funniest questions some Realtors have ever been asked when showing a house. Here we go!

Does the food in the pantry stay with the house?

Only the expired stuff.

Could we lay on the bed to see how the room feels when we wake up in the morning?

The seller has had the flu… probably not a good idea.

Does the car come with the house?

A

Sure, for an additional $50,000.

I know the seller is asking $250,000 but do you think they would take $150,000 if we promise to take good care of it?

Why don’t you offer $250,000 and forget the promise.

After seeing a dog in the yard, the buyer’s asked, “Can the dog be part of the sale?”

So, as fate would have it, they got the dog!

Dear Lynn,

Are you ready for this? We bought a house and closed on it two weeks ago. We took our time moving in and stayed at our apartment until last night. We paid an extra month’s rent to be able to do this. Last night we stayed in our new home for the first time.

In the middle of the night we hear a train!

A TRAIN! After being awaken we couldn’t go back to sleep. Seriously, no one told us there was a train nearby Is there anything we can do?

Dear Choo Choo,

Well, what a dilemma. Let’s get you on the right track. Unless you can prove that the seller tried to hide the fact that there is a train there, like maybe playing loud music during the showings or only showing the home during the hours that the train goes by you really can’t do anything. You may consider ear plugs, or asking Alexa to play noise cancelling sounds at night.

How about talking to your neighbors and asking them how they deal with it.

I’ve heard that people get used to planes, trains, and automobiles after a while.

Make a list of what you love about your new home, then just chug along.

To buyers out there: Make sure you do your research when buying a home. Ask questions, have a list. You can even go to the neighborhood any time of day or night, and sit in your car to get a feel of what you can see and hear there. Check with your agent to see if they know of anything that may sway you from considering putting in an offer. Be sure to communicate well with your agent, they are there to help you.
