A collection of ‘unseen’ abstract art goes on view

when the Frelinghuysen Morris House and Studio opened its summer exhibition, “American Abstract Artists-A Collection-Unseen Works.”

“The reason we say these are unseen is because they have been in [the FMHS] collection for 30 years and before that, in George’s closet, from the time he bought them until his death in 1975. Some of these haven’t been seen since 1937,” said Kinney Frelinghuysen, director of the Frelinghuysen Morris House and Studio in Lenox.

Suzy Frelinghuysen, Kinney’s aunt, established the Morris Foundation before her death in 1988. It was her wish to keep the couple’s house and studio in Lenox, as well as the majority of her and her late husband’s assets, intact. Kinney Frelinghuysen and his wife, Linda, opened the Hawthorne Avenue house and studio to the public in 1988, offering tours of the historic International Style house and white-stucco walled studio. Their art collection, once spread across three properties — in Lenox, Paris and New York City — is now together, along with letters, sketchbooks and works belonging to George and Suzy.

Abstract Artists held their first group show in the Squibb Gallery in New York City.

The show would attract 1,500 viewers over the course of its three-week run, but the art critics were not kind.

“Here their adventuresomeness stops; all too often the canvases recall Picasso, Miro, Braque and other experimentalists among the moderns. Therefore, these painters have merely broken from one formula to follow another ...,” critic Jerome Meliquist, of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, wrote in an April 1937 review of the show. “The value of such an exhibition as this is that it may encourage some young painter to go ahead and achieve that individuality which the group as a whole now lacks.”

But George L. K. Morris and Estelle “Suzy” Frelinghuysen, abstract artists themselves, saw value in the paintings of their peers. Morris, a founding member of the American Abstract Artists and an exhibitor in that first show, purchased 10 pieces.

Over the next few years, they would collect pieces from 25 members of the American Abstract Artists, including Esphyr Slobodkina (author and illustrator of “Caps for Sale”), Ilya Bolotowsky, Ad Reinhardt, Werner Drewes, Frank Bacher, Balcomb Greene, Gertrude Greene, Ida Fisher, Jean Arp, David Smith, Byron Browne, Karl Knoths, Jean Helion, John Ferren, Vaclav Vytlacie and Albert Gallatin.

The works were carefully tucked away in the couple’s collection, hidden away from public view until recently,

Teaching audiences to view abstract art, as the artists intended, is part of the mission of FMHS, she said.

“George didn’t think you had to be an expert,” Kinney said. “This is every man. If you look at it and get something out of it, that’s it ...

The issue today, is that people see these high auction prices for a Picasso. They think, if it’s that expensive, everybody else knows what its all about and I better pretend I know too. That’s a misfortune. I think this whole building [the studio] helps you go the other way.

There’s a language here and that language is for you.”

Following the house tours, visitors are invited into the studio to not only see the exhibition, but to participate in a drawing exercise designed to help them view the pieces not as figurative works.

“You can figure it out for yourself,” Kinney said of the abstract pieces. “You know what it is. George likened it to architecture. You don’t need an explanation of what a building is — you know what it is intuitively.”

It’s the same with abstract art, he said.

that not only were George and Suzy artists, but they were advocates of abstract art being included in major museum collections.

Both were members of the American Abstract Artists.

Morris also wrote criticism for the Partisan Review and purchased art for the Modern Museum of Art. “At the 1937 show, we think that he bought 10 paintings. That was very typical of him, as he bought things that were inexpensive, that nobody wanted but turned out to be very good,” Linda Freylinghuysen, FMHS communications director, said during a recent interview. “He was on the MoMA Advisory Committee. He would buy them things, like a [Piet] Mondrian, and then he would buy one for himself.”

In addition to the 10 works of art, Morris also purchased lithographs created for the 1937 show catalog.

Those lithographs — created by the show’s artists as companion pieces to the works on display and sold for 50 cents a piece — are included in the FMHS exhibit as well.

But try as they might, George and Suzy could not convince American art critics of the value of American abstractionism.

“The criticism reminds you of the criticisms of cubism, of the criticisms of impressionism,” Kinney said.

“The attacks are repeated again and again.”

While American critics and museums focused on the genre of social realism and on abstract art coming out of Europe, the American Abstract Artists focused on making their art accessible to the masses.

“They believed abstraction was a democratic idea and no expertise was required to understand it,” Linda said. “George said in an interview: ‘Abstract paintings are a logical beginning. They are not puzzles. They are not difficult to understand. They need to be looked at as one might look at a tree or a stone itself, and not as the representation of one. They stand with the in-

In ‘Selling Kabul,’ a pressurized situation is ďŹ nally spoken about

is sitting on a thick, warmlycolored rug and leaning against the couch that wraps around the room, trying to ďŹ x the router. He wants to check his email. He wants to distract himself, because his wife is in the hospital, in labor with his ďŹ rst child. He is elated, bewildered, blindsided — all that any new father feels when his son is coming into the world — and he wants to be with them.

But if he leaves this house, they could both be killed.

This is Kabul in April 2013.

The United States has just begun a major withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

Taroon has worked as an interpreter with the U.S. Army, and as the Army leaves, it leaves him and all of his family exposed and unprotected.

He has been in hiding for months in his sister’s house, and today he is trapped inside while she has gone out to sit with his wife.

So begins a day of reckoning in New York playwright Sylvia Khoury’s “Selling Kabul,â€? a new work running through July 20 on the Nikos Stage at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. “Knowing his son is being born and not being able to be there, it’s visceral,â€? said Babak Tafti, who plays Taroon. “The (strength of emotion) when a child is born is enough to begin with — but then to learn that a dangerous ďŹ gure was there, and you can’t do anything, because you will kill everyone you love — I don’t know how to put it into words.â€?

Tafti spoke with The Eagle, along with director Tyne Rafaeli and Khoury, at the Williams Inn after a recent evening rehearsal. “I am close to people who

Khoury said. “The human situation of being trapped in your home while waiting for the fulďŹ llment of a promise by America and other countries — a pressurized situation we as Americans are responsible for — seems important to speak about.â€?

Interpreters signed up to work with the U.S. in the belief that they would rebuild Afghanistan,� Rafaeli said. “Their country has been a battleground between empires for centuries. They hadn’t experienced this in their lifetimes, but they were

aware of it. “After 9/11, when the U.S. came into Afghanistan, there was a hope. A great hope.

This would be the rebuilding of Afghanistan.�

Taroon decides to become an interpreter largely to help the woman he loves. She is intelligent, vibrant, strong. “He looks at his wife and sees the restrictions the Taliban has created,� Tafti said.

His family is highly educated and well-off, the women as well as the men. He sees the U.S. as a land of freedom that can bring opportunities to his own country. “He buys into that ideology and power,� Tafti said. “There’s no way they could lose or would give up the job.�

husband, Afiya and Jawid, are trying, in their own ways, to keep those they love safe. Now Taliban soldiers are after Taroon, and they will damage anyone near him to find him.

“These forces are inconsistent,” Rafaeli said. “They are not centralized, not predictable or recognizable. You try to protect yourself, but it’s hard to plan and make decisions. (Taroon and his family) hear interpreters are being targeted, but they don’t know how or why.”

They cannot trust any authority.

“That’s the kind of terror,” Khoury said. “When we read about Afghanistan or Iraq, we get numbers but not the daily terror these people are living under. The U.S. has a real culpability there ... Afghanistan is this country’s longest war, and when we’re ripping this country apart, the people there bear the brunt of it.”

They are ordinary people, Rafaeli said, trying to deal with extreme circumstances, when any choice can

As the play evolved in rehearsal, Rafaeli felt the weight of their need and determination.

And not only did the U.S. not fulfill that promise, but the U.S. Army did not take care of the translators who worked with the troops, when they left.

Troops who could not talk with anyone local on the ground relied on their interpreters, Tafti said. Interpreters saved lives. They served under fire and shared the same dangers soldiers faced.

“I think Taroon was really good at his job and at being in the field,” he said.

He got along with the soldiers he served with, and they respected him.

“Taroon has a strong connection with the U.S. because of the troops and the troops consider him family.

But there is a disconnect at the political level,” Khoury said.

Taroon has now been waiting for months for the army and the U.S. government to help him and his wife, and now his son. His sister and her husband and their friends are risking their lives to protect him.

BE-A-BETTER GARDENER

Coping with climate change Global warming is the popular name for the often dramatic and destructive weather trends that we have been witnessing in our gardens in recent years. My wife the climate researcher, however, prefers to call it “climate chaos.” That’s because what we have seen in the Northeast has not just been a gradual increase in temperatures, but rather an overthrow of the familiar norms.

I was reminded of this recently when I had occasion to speak to David Wolfe of Cornell University.

Wolfe is a professor of plant and soil ecology who has pursued a special Thomas Christopher interest in maintaining sustainable gardens in a time of climate change. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in this subject; in 2017, he was invited to speak about it to Britain’s Royal Horticultural Society.

When I spoke to Wolfe, he pointed out that the effects of climate change will vary widely depending on the area of the United States in which you garden. In the West, for example, the most pronounced effect on gardens is predicted to be a combination of greater summer heat, with accompanying heat stress and drought. Similar changes will afflict the Northeastern gardeners. Climate models predict that total annual precipitation will probably remain about the same, but because plants will need more water to cope with the greater summer heat, they will effectively experience more drought. This will probably be exacerbated by a trend, already beginning, toward fewer and more

violent rainstorms. In other words, periods of too little water will probably alternate with periods of too much.

One way to cope with a cycle of this sort, Wolfe suggested, is to boost the organic content of the soil. By adding copious amounts of compost, for example, the gardener can enhance both the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water, and also make it more porous, so that excess water drains away more promptly.

In addition, to conserve the existing organic content of the soil, the gardener should avoid unnecessary digging and tillage. That’s because turning the soil over mixes air into it, which in turn accelerates the breakdown of the soil’s organic portion, and its escape into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas that is driving global warming.

Rising temperatures mean that winters will be warmer on average. This could be an opportunity, Dr. Wolfe noted, for gardeners to experiment with less winter hardy plants, plants which may also be adapted to warmer summers. This change in weather patterns has also had the counter-intuitive effect of increasing frost damage. Wolfe explained that because New York’s apple and grape crops had flowered several weeks earlier than their historic norm in some recent years, they became more vulnerable to late frosts. The same effect translates to spring-blooming garden plants, which are likely to bloom earlier, coming out of dormancy at a time when they are likely to be damaged by late frosts.

Warmer winters are also allowing southern pests and weeds to migrate north.

Insects such as the hemlock woolly adelgid, which were formerly barred from our region by winter’s cold, are making inroads here, killing the hemlocks in our forests.

Even more familiar, long

established insect pests are affected by global warming. Longer summers mean more time for reproduction, with some pests adding more generations and more population growth per year.

Wolfe recommended enhancing the diversity of the garden, not only by trying new plants but also by varying planting dates to take advantage of and guard against earlier springs and late frosts. One further recommendation is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases your garden generates. Besides reducing tillage, conscientious gardeners will also reduce their use of synthetic fertilizers, which consume large amounts of fossil fuels in their manufacture. Organic fertilizers are

preferable in this respect, since they largely consist of agricultural byproducts.

Even these should be applied judiciously, however, because nitrates, a common ingredient of most fertilizers, can escape into the atmosphere as nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas more than 200 times as potent as carbon dioxide.

SCULPTURENOW

‘A varied and enriching artistic experience’

of wood were burned at the Leverett Peace Pagoda on August 9 — the anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki,” said Thomas Matsuda, a Japanese American artist who is classically trained in the art of Buddhist sculpture.

“I lined the eight pieces in front of the pagoda and surrounded each of them with a kindling. Buddhist nuns and monks chanted. Larry Brings Good offered a Native American prayer. Then they were lit on fire in the middle of an open field. While the burning was going on, Mary Ellen Miller played the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute, and my son Kai played the alto saxophone. I called the ceremony and the charred remains of the pine stumps ‘Purification.’”

Matsuda’s “Purification” is one of the 30 sculptures on display at The Mount this summer as part of the SculptureNow exhibit. The sculptures have been on display since June 1 and will remain on the grounds until Oct. 27.

SculptureNow is collaborating with The Mount for the seventh year in a row in putting together this outdoor exhibit that complements the pristine grounds of Edith Wharton’s home.

“The average viewing time of a sculpture is three seconds,” said Ann Jon, artist and a founding member of SculptureNow. “Not here.

Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the vast property or even sit down and enjoy a picnic on the lawn all while enjoying a varied and enriching artistic experience.”

Jon was born and raised in Denmark before moving to the U.S., and is now a long-

time resident of the Berkshires. Her passion for art followed her to her new home where she decided to start an organization that would promote sculpture.

“I came up with the concept in 1998,” Jon said. “My mission was, and still is, to promote the general knowledge and appreciation of sculpture in the Berkshires while also offering artists venues to display their work.”

SculptureNow has exhibited shows at the Norman Rockwell Museum and the Berkshire Botanical Garden before finding a home at The Mount. The shows have grown consistently in size and scope since their inception, according to Jon, which has allowed them to invite world-renowned sculptors such as Albert Paley, all while still promoting the work of local and international artists looking to make a splash.

“Purification is a very meaningful piece to me,” Matsuda said. “There are a lot of different layers. The eight stumps represent the eight noble truths, which are one of the foundational concepts in Buddhism. You can think of them as the 10 commandments. A big influence was the Hopi Indian prophecy, which speaks of this crossroad where we find ourselves, it then asks. ‘What shall we bring forth, purification or destruction?’ I interpret it as either we purify ourselves to live in harmony with each other and the Earth, or we become purified by natural destruction or war. Therefore, I see Purification as having both a positive and negative message at the same time. I also the pieces as both beautiful and disturbing as well.”

Matsuda was greatly influenced by Native American traditions and culture during his formative years. After studying at the Pratt Institute in New York, he joined a group of Buddhist monks who were traveling across the country.

“We often stayed in Native America reservations,” Matsuda said. “I ended up going back and living on the Navaho reservation after the trip and that greatly influenced

Matsuda then traveled to Japan to learn the art of traditional Buddhist sculpture under the tutelage of master Koukei Eri. “After two years, I came back to America because I wanted to reach a larger audience,” Matsuda said. “I still feel that I am carrying the same messages and teachings that I learned while studying Buddhist sculpture and iconography. I hope that shines through in ‘Purification.’”

Michael Thomas, a sculptor and filmmaker who splits his time between Great Barrington and New York City, has a very different message behind his work. He is a member of SculptureNow’s board and has collaborated with its shows on numerous occasions. “‘Circus’ was inspired by

The orange rings, which seem to float one on top of the other, stand tall near The Mount’s stable.

“Rings are ubiquitous in a circus,” said Thomas. “People fly on them, people throw them, they catch on fire. One of the main tenants of what I do is that I try to take these extremely heavy materials and shape them to give them levity, so that they seem to float almost. There’s a fun element to a lot of my sculptures; there’s a playfulness to them.”

Thomas’ sculptures are made from salvaged materi-

als from the industrial era.

The metal rings he used for Circus come from salvaged replacement parts for the Eerie Canal.

“A lot of times, when I go find materials at junkyards, the objects will tell you what to do,” Thomas said.

“We want sculpture that’s varied at SculptureNow,” said Thomas. “We don’t have themes, but we do want politics, we do want social commentary, and we mostly just want straight up art. We don’t want to make it any one thing.

We want to bring in many different elements because the people coming to shows like these are turned on by something different.”

“Every artist is different,” said Jon. “That’s the most fun part. Ashley Blalock, for example, came all the way from California with her sculpture packed in a suitcase. In the 17 years I have been doing this show, I had never seen that.”

Blalock’s piece, “Queen Anne’s Lace,” is a set of six giant spiderwebs. Jon and Blalock knew exactly where they were going to place them on The Mount’s grounds.

The woven nylon webs hang between the trees that line a small path that deviates from the property’s main road. The summer light shines through the branches, reflecting off of the transparent threads.

“The placement of each piece is extremely important to us and the artist,” Jon said.

“It can really add so much to a sculpture.”

Matsuda’s “Purification” is strategically placed alongside the winding stream, contrasting the vivacity of both the flowing water and the garden.

“After a lot of discussion with the board of SculptureNow, we decided to place the piece next to this stream,” Matsuda said. “I had displayed ‘Purification’ in Worcester by a lake and I really liked the juxtaposition and the reflection on the water.

July 17 - 28: “Grand Horizons,” by Bess Wohl, directed by Leigh Silverman. Bill and Nancy (Jamey Sheridan and JoBeth Williams) have been happily married for 50 years. They can finish each other’s sentences and anticipate each other’s every sigh, snore and sneeze. But there’s one thing nobody could have anticipated: Nancy wants out. As their adult sons, Brian and Ben (Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Thomas Sadoski), descend on the Grand Horizons senior living community, the walls of the French family as-they-know-it come crumbling down.
