We learned about weekly winners’ favorites, future By Shane Covey Brattleboro Reformer BRATTLEBORO — Entering the 2021-2022 school year, area sports fans already knew that Aidan Davis could crush a fastball, that Jamison Nystrom could thread a needle, and that Isabella Lonardo could fly. The Sam’s Outdoor Outfitters and Brattleboro Reformer Athlete of the Week contest allowed us to get to know those students outside the lines. We

learned that the Hinsdale slugger wants to be an electrician, that the Bellows Falls floor general’s favorite movie is “Remember the Titans,” and that the Brattleboro hurdler has “traveling all over the world to take photos” on her bucket list. Those were three of this newspaper’s 29 winners. Prior to taking the time to answer questions about themselves, they were nominated for having an exceptional week athletically and then received the most votes of any nominee on a reformer.com poll. Jonathan Terry was the only student to earn the honor during each season. The recent Bellows Falls graduate became eligible after scoring three touchdowns versus Milton on his dad’s birthday, recording a double-double versus Mount St. Joseph Academy on the court, and winning the triple jump at the Division 2 state track and field meet. Once each season came to an end, the weekly winners went up against each other in a voting battle. Brattleboro soccer player Magnus von Krusenstiern (fall), Bellows Falls wrestler Trenton Rumrill (winter) and BF baseball player Jack Cravinho (spring) came out on top, each reeling in a $25 gift certificate to The Marina. “He was the defensive midfield anchor, and it didn’t matter who had the ball on the other team, Magnus was winning the 50/50 challenge every time, whether it’s a header or on the ground,” said BUHS varsity boys soccer coach Ben Brewer. Rumrill won 18 total matches on the mat for the Springfield team. The heavyweight placed third at JV States and then fifth in Vermont’s varsity tournament. Cravinho threw a three-hitter against Vergennes to pick up a Division 3 quarterfinal victory. The recent grad batted second in Bellows Falls’ order and was a gold glove shortstop when not on the hill. Along the way, we learned that Leland & Gray basketball star Maggie Parker’s favorite song is Adele’s “Easy on Me,” that BF ice hockey standout Grace Bazin’s favorite classes are definitely gym and lunch, that walking bucket Alex Carpenter likes to hunt and fish in his free time, and that dangerous Leland & Gray Ultimate player Warren Rob-

When the fans were not watching them, a couple of area students were doing super impressive things during the school year. BF field hockey goalie Jaia Caron painted a mural inside her school as a tribute to Jada Spaulding and Vincenzo Ruggiero, while Hinsdale shortstop Daniel Tetreault built dugouts for the Pacers’ diamond. “They were both good friends of mine growing up,” Caron said of Spaulding and Ruggiero. “I painted that mural to memorialize them the way people should remember them, as beautiful, innocent and youthful.” The 2019 Reformer Athlete of the Fall Season is headed to Russell Sage College. “They are needed for privacy. Another reason is the weather — we have played many games here when it was pouring,” Tetreault said of the dugouts he built for his Extended Learning Opportunities project. His extraordinary efforts helped earn him an Athlete of the Week nomination in the spring. Shane Covey can be reached at scovey@reformer.com or 802-254-2311, ext. 163. On Twitter: @ShaneCovey.
